Ralph E. Webb, owned motel
Ralph E. Webb had a knack for communicating with others.
Mr. Webb, 82, who with his wife owned the Webb Motel in Alexandria for 30 years, died at 10:27 a.m. Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East in Ft. Thomas after collapsing at his home in Highland Heights.
He was a native of Clay County and moved to Greater Cincinnati to seek a better life, said a son, Eddie Webb of Crittenden.
He became a pipe fitter and lived in downtown Cincinnati, walking to work on Mehring Way. He and his wife, Nellie Jane Webb, raised three sons. They both worked hard and steadily bettered their lives, said Eddie Webb.
They bought an apartment building in Cincinnati and later moved to Delhi, Ohio. In 1959 they traded the Delhi house for a small motel in Alexandria.
Mrs. Webb ran the motel while Mr. Webb continued working for the Pipe Fitters Union Local No. 392. In the evenings and weekends, he worked to improve the motel.
"He had an eighth-grade education, but he was always working to get ahead. He knew how to communicate with people," his son said. "He stayed up on politics. He loved to read. He was a very likable person. He could talk to anybody and get along with them."
He knew how to draw the best out of people, said his youngest son, Oral "Mooch" Webb of Highland Heights.
"He had a lot of patience, and he was interested in people," Oral Webb said.
The Webb Motel became home to couples waiting for their houses to be built and to highway construction workers as well as travelers.
Mr. Webb hunted in his younger days and pursued his love of fishing throughout his life. In later years the Webbs spent winters in Florida, where Mr. Webb became a skilled saltwater fisherman.
They sold the motel about 10 years ago. Last year they sold their winter home in Florida and moved to Highland Heights to live year-round.
Mr. Webb was a member of Alexandria Lodge No. 152 F&AM.
Other survivors include another son, Ricky Webb of Cold Spring; brothers, Elzie Webb of Oneida, Tenn., and Phil Webb of Orlando, Fla.; a sister, Minnie Banks of Hamilton, Ohio; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Alexandria Funeral Home. Visitation will be from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home, with Masonic services at 3 p.m. Burial will be in Arlington Memorial Gardens, Cincinnati.
Ernest William Belcher, 80, formerly of Butler, died Friday at Lakeside Place Nursing Home, Highland Heights. Arrangements are pending at Peoples Funeral Home, Grants Lick. John Edward Burns, 68, of Ft. Thomas, died at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at his residence. He was a retired salesman for Sears. He was a member of Newport Elks BOE Lodge No. 273.
Survivors include brothers, James Burns of Ft. Thomas and George Burns of Philadelphia.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 9:30 a.m. Monday at St. Catherine of Siena Church, Ft. Thomas. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. Sunday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Ft. Thomas. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Ft. Thomas.
Novada Campbell, 79, formerly of Carrollton, died at 4:20 a.m. Friday at King's Daughters' Hospital, Madison, Ind. She was a homemaker and a member of Trinity Pentecostal Church, Corbin. Her husband, James H. Campbell, preceded her in death.
Survivors include daughters, Betty Davis of Louisville, Margaret Hensley of Illinois, Jowana Foley of Cincinnati and Mary Alsip of Carrollton; a son, Eddie Campbell of Ashland; sisters, Geneva Ambrose and Martha Cunningham, both of Lima, Ohio; and 12 grandchildren.
The body will be cremated. Graham-Dunn Funeral Home, Carrollton, is in charge.
Alberta Catherine Teegarden Clayton, 70, of Silver Grove, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Ft. Thomas. She was a retired nurse's aide and a member of Powersville Christian Church.
Survivors include daughters, Sandra Allender and Deborah Roaden, both of Silver Grove, and Lana Simpson of Ft. Thomas; her mother, Velma Lucas Teegarden of Augusta; brothers, Hank Teegarden of Brooksville, Billy Teegarden of Falmouth, James Teegarden of Virginia and Richard Teegarden of Mt. Olivet; sisters, Christeen Biddle of Falmouth, Loucille McElfresh of Berlin and Joyce Murry of Bladeston; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
Services are at 11 a.m. today at Moore and Parker Funeral Home, Brooksville. Burial is in Neave Cemetery, Falmouth.
Hazel Marie Collignon,, 87, of Cerritos, Calif., died Thursday in California.
Arrangements are pending at Peoples Funeral Home, Falmouth.
Mark John Gronefeld, 45, of Florence, died at 11:24 a.m. Friday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a meat manager for the Remke Market in Taylor Mill and was a member of St. Paul Church, Florence.
Survivors include his wife, Darlene Klare Gronefeld; a son, Eric Lawrence Gronefeld of Florence; daughters, Shannon Gronefeld and Danielle Gronefeld, both of Florence; his mother, Alma Gronefeld of Independence; a sister, Wanda Shack of Latonia; and one grandchild.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 12:10 p.m. Monday at St. Paul Church, Florence, and visitation 10 to 11:45 a.m. Monday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to the American Cancer Society, 7730 U. S. 42, Suite C6, Florence, Ky. 41042.
Mary Jane Weber Hug, 71, of Covington, died at 5:50 p.m. Tuesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North Hospice, Covington. She was a retired cafeteria cashier for St. Elizabeth North and a member of St. Patrick Church, Taylor Mill, and Latonia American Legion Post No. 203 Ladies Auxiliary.
Her husband, Carl Hug, died in 1963. Survivors include a daughter, Linda Baird of Covington; a brother, Herbert Weber of Edgewood; a sister, Ellen Weber of Covington; two grandchildren.
Services were Friday at St. Patrick Church, Taylor Mill. Burial was in Mother of God Cemetery, Ft. Wright. Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill, handled arrangements. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014.
Kenneth Vincent Keys, 77, of Florence, died at 2:32 a.m. Thursday at Baptist Hospital, Newport, Tenn. He was a retired switchman for the L&N; Railroad and a Navy veteran of World War II. He was a member of Florence Baptist Church and the Brotherhood of Railroad Train men and was a Boy Scout leader for Union Post No. 805.
Survivors include his wife, Beulah June Keys; sons, John W. Keys of Lexington and Danny L. Keys of Cosby, Tenn.; a daughter, Beryl Sue Briggs of Florence; sisters, Betty Wakefield of Latonia and Nellie Egan of Ludlow; eight grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, two step grandchildren and six step great-grandchildren.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington, with visitation from 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Entombment will be in Highland cemetery Mausoleum, Ft. Mitchell.
Eileen J. Aull Knarr, 81, of Latonia, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

Ellen Lawson McElfresh, 75, of Lexington, died Tuesday at Good Samaritan Hospital, Lexington. She was a retired restaurant cook. Her husband, Luther "Woody" McElfresh, died in 1987. Survivors include a son, Joe Seither of Tampa, Fla.; a stepson, Bob McElfresh of Newport; brothers, Luther Lawson of Lancaster and Russell Lawson of Lexington; seven grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
Services will be at 3 p.m. to day at Moore and Parker Funeral Home, Brooksville, with visitation from 1:30 p.m. and burial in Mt. Auburn Cemetery, Mt. Auburn.
James Edward O'Brien, 83, of Edgewood, died at 6:45 p.m. Wednesday at the Highlands of Ft. Thomas nursing home. He was a retired driver and salesman for Interstate Brands Co., Cincinnati. He was a member of Teamsters Union Local 114.
His wife, Thelma Helen Wefer O'Brien, died in 1993. Survivors include sons, James J. O'Brien of Oxford, Ohio, Timothy M. O'Brien of Belem, Brazil, and Kevin E. O'Brien of Hamilton, Ohio; a daughter, Marilyn A. Jenner of Edgewood; five grandchildren; one great-grandchild.
Mass of Christian burial will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Therese Church, Southgate. Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m. Monday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Ft. Thomas. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Ft. Thomas.
Harold E. Sampson, 69, of Falmouth, died Friday at his residence. He was retired from Fuller Manufacturing, Falmouth. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War and a member of American Legion Post No. 109.
Survivors include his wife, Deloris Straub Sampson; a son, Gary Sampson of Dayton, Ohio; a brother, James Sampson of Peach Grove; sisters, Lorretta Biddle of Foster, Elsie King of Cincinnati, Mona Brock of Williamstown.

Gilbert Eugene "Gene" Sprague, 54, of Cold Spring, died at 1:51 a.m. Thursday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.
Survivors include his parents, Elbren and Ella Sprague of Cold Spring; a brother, David Sprague of Cold Spring; and sisters, Carolyn Sprague and Mary Sprague, both of Cold Spring, Rosalee Hendricks of Cincinnati and Judith Roll of Cleves, Ohio.
Services will be at the convenience of the family. Burial will be in Plum Creek Cemetery, Butler. Alexandria Funeral Home is handling arrangements.
Dillus Turner, 79, of Walton, died at 8:25 p.m. Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East, Ft. Thomas. He was an elevator operator for John Galbreath Co., Cincinnati.
Survivors include his wife, Myrtle Powell Turner; sons, Kenneth Turner of Bargersville, Ind., and Lonnie Turner of Union; a sister, Vola Anderson of New Richmond, Ohio; brothers, Dewey Turner of Berea and Dallas Turner of McKee; and four grandchildren.
Services will be at noon Monday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Walton, with visitation from 10 a.m. Entombment will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.
