Dr. Glenn L. Pfister, St. Luke surgeon

Medicine was a way of life and a family endeavor for Dr. Glenn Louis Pfister.

A general surgeon, Dr. Pfister was a graduate of the University of Cincinnati Medical School, as were his brothers, Dr. Howard Pfister and Dr. Raymond Pfister.

"His whole life was his surgery and his family," said Dr. Glenn Pfister's daughter, Maggie Grefer, of Ft. Thomas.

Dr. Pfister, 78, of Ft. Thomas, died Friday morning at his winter home in Florida.

He was a surgeon with St. Luke Hospitals and a member of the American College of Surgeons. He retired about 10 years ago and lived in Ft. Thomas in the summer and Marco Island, Fla., in the winter, Mrs. Grefer said.

At one point, Dr. Pfister served a term as chief of staff at St. Luke, said his daughter.

Her father's office was on Highland Avenue in Ft. Thomas, Mrs. Grefer said.

"He loved Ft. Thomas and his practice there and at St. Luke," said Mrs. Grefer, the wife of Dr. Michael Grefer. "He suggested that my husband establish a practice there. 'It's a very good life,' " she recalled her father saying.

When Dr. Pfister began his career, surgery was less specialized, and he did Caesarian deliveries and abdominal surgery, among other procedures, Mrs. Grefer said.
