Body of Ace Pilot On Way To Sciotoville
Last Rites for Lt. Smith Are Arranged for Friday Afternoon
The body of Lt. John Clay Smith, Scioto County’s only ace fighter pilot, who gave his life in battling the Japanese in the South Pacific, will arrive her Wednesday morning over the Chesapeake & Ohio Railway from New York and will be taken to Gill Funeral Home at Sciotoville.
The pilot was a son of Mr. And Mrs. Arthur Smith (Lucy McCormick), 320 Eastern Av., Sciotoville.
Brief funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Gill parlors with Rev. L. C. Radley of Sciotoville Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.
The parents were notified through papers from the War Department at Washington that the body of the pilot had been identified "beyond any reasonable doubt" and requested information on whether to return the body to the States for burial.
Return Takes Months.
In August Mrs. Smith had a telephone message from Washington relative to her plans for return of the body and again she was assured that identification had been made certain.
The body had been buried near the pilot’s fallen aircraft in New Guinea by Japanese. Identification was made through the number of the P-38 after natives insisted the pilot had been buried near the fallen ship. It was one of the few instances where the Japanese buried enemy dead.
The body was reburied in New Guinea but climate conditions were not favorable for a permanent U.S. cemetery there and the body was taken to the Philippines and remained at Manila for many months while positive identification was made.
On Oct. 19 a telegram was received that the body was en-route to the States.
Native of Scioto
The pilot was born Feb. 11, 1920 in Scioto County. He was graduated from East High School in 1938 and was in his second year at Ohio State when he entered service Nov. 12, 1941.
He was sent to Ft. Knox and was transferred to the air force in April, 1942. He was sent to Santa Ana, Calif., and was trained at various fields in that state. He commissioned a second lieutenant and licensed as a pilot Jan. 4, 1943 to fly single and multiple-engine craft.
July 16, 1943, he flew from Hamilton, Field at San Francisco to Brisbane, Australia arriving July 20. He was assigned to the 475th Fighter Group, 5th Air Force, the only such unit activated in the South Pacific area.
He immediately flew secret missions and helped establish an air base at Buna, New Guinea. Then he entered combat missions Aug. 15. His duties called for flights over enemy bases.
He was first shot down on Wewak Sept. 2 and crashed in the jungle. Aided by native he made his way to the southern coast and returned to Port Moresby. He was given a two week rest period.
It was Nov. 19, 1943, that he was shot down the second time.
Lt. Smith was credited with seven enemy planes and was one of only 119 in a squadron of 5, 000 to get the Distinguished Flying Cross.
Surviving are the parents; two brothers, Marion of Kentland av and Earl R. at home; a niece and nephew, and a sister-in-law.
