Robert Johnson, loved square-dancing, photography

A longtime family friend described Robert Johnson as a happy, generous man who loved square-dancing and photography.

"He took beautiful pictures for everybody, " said Helen Connley, a longtime friend of Mr. Johnson and his wife, Edna Knisley Johnson. "He'd come to your house, and he'd be the life of your party, and he'd have so many pictures."

Mr. Johnson, a native of Latonia who worked as a price editor for the General Electric Co. for 47 years, died Friday at Villaspring of Erlanger Health Care Center and Rehabilitation. He was 90.

Connley was part of the Johnsons' wedding party when the couple married in Latonia in 1936. The Johnsons would have been married 68 years next month, she said.

"He and Edna were very, very close. And he more or less babied her. He took care of her, " Connley said.

The two loved to square dance and round dance and would travel around the region to conventions and dances, Connley said. Mr. Johnson would "call" the dances while Mrs. Johnson filled in if someone needed a partner.

Although the two never had children, Mr. Johnson had a beloved dog that he loved to walk, Connley said.

"He was a great guy. You couldn't say enough nice about him, really. He never hurt anybody, and he always smiled, " Connley said.

Mr. Johnson's adolescent years, however, were marked by tragedy. In 1927, as Mr. Johnson and his family were returning home from a funeral, their car was struck by a train in Latonia.

His parents, 7-year-old brother and 10-year-old sister were killed in the accident. Mr. Johnson was the only survivor.

Despite the tragedy, Mr. Johnson went on to live a long and happy life, Connley said.

"Sometimes it would bother him, and sometimes he would talk about it, but he was a happy man, " she said. "He was a very sweet man and a very nice man. He was my friend."

Mr. Johnson was a Navy veteran of World War II and a member of Golden Rule Masonic Lodge 345 F&AM; in Latonia.
