Carl Lang, farmer, did his good deeds quietly

For most of his life, Carl Lang lived and worked on his own.

Mr. Lang, 97, who died Friday at St. Luke Hospital East, farmed for decades on property off Buttermilk Pike in Lakeside Park.

He raised chickens, sold eggs, milked cows and raised vegetables, said his nephew, Chuck Payne of Fort Wright.

Mr. Lang enjoyed farming and working outdoors. He worked by himself so often that he had created clever tools to help him when no one else was around.

"He was one of those people that could do things, that for other people, it would take two or three, " Payne said.

Mr. Lang was a member of the Erlanger Baptist Church for more than 40 years. He enjoyed doing little acts of kindness, such as giving a nursing home some of his eggs and frying chickens.

"He was a very giving, philanthropic person, but most everything he did, he did very quietly, " Payne said.

During World War II, Mr. Lang served as a mechanic for the 4th Fighter Group in England, which began as Royal Air Force squadrons made up of American pilots.

His ancestors came to America from Germany. His grandfather came to the Cincinnati area from Germany in 1815 because his great-grandmother didn't want her son drafted into Napoleon's army, Payne said.

The Lang family ran a brewery in Cov-ington, which the family sold just before Prohibition.

When Mr. Lang retired from farming in the middle 1970s, he moved to Union with his wife, Margaret, whom he had married late in life. They lived together for 25 years until her death.

Survivors include a sister, Louise Ashcroft of Richwood; a stepdaughter, Leah Cloys of Lexington; a stepson, Charles Bolton of West Haven, Conn.; and two stepgrandsons.
