Jane Mary Seddon, children's author

Jane Mary Seddon had always wanted to be an author, so she began writing "The Magic Carpet" series, children's books that she hoped would be both educational and entertaining.

"She decided three or four years ago that she was going to get a book published, and it kind of went from there, " said her husband, Andy Seddon of Union.

Mrs. Seddon died Wednesday at her home from melanoma. She was 41.

She was diagnosed with the disease in 1997 and was given a clean bill of health after several months of treatment, but the cancer reemerged in January.

Inspired by her two daughters, she later began writing educational children's books. She modeled "The Magic Carpet" series on "The Magic School Bus" series of children's books, in which a teacher takes children on imaginary trips to places such as space and the human body to teach them about science. She had written three books in "The Magic Carpet" series -- all still unpublished -- at the time of her death.

"She didn't want it to be an adult topic again. She wanted to do something for the kids, " her husband said.

The Seddons met while both were working at Fidelity Investments in Covington during the late 1980s.

She worked various jobs as a systems programmer until three years ago, when she quit to devote more time to writing and to volunteering at her daughters' elementary school in Union.

She did fulfill her dream of publishing with a nonfiction book, "Daily Sex: 365 Positions and Activities for a Year of Great Sex." It was published July 1 by Warner Books.

Surviving, in addition to her husband, are their two daughters: Kimberly, 9, and Hannah, 8; her parents, Richard and Lorraine Schroeder of Ill.; four sisters, Lynn Schroeder, Susan Jones and Diane Schroeder, all of Chicago, and Lisa Daniels of Dallas, Texas; and two brothers, Mark Schroeder of St. Louis, Mo., and Jeff Schroeder of Boston.

Funeral services will be at 4 p.m. Saturday at Linneman Funeral Home, Burlington. Visitation will start there at 2 p.m. Saturday.
