Woody Beagle loved family, friends and golf

Woodrow O. Beagle of Erlanger worked for local power companies, but his family, friends and the game of golf were what really energized him.
Mr. Beagle -- known as "Woody" -- died Friday at St. Elizabeth Hospital South. He was 85.

"He was crazy about his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, " daughter Elaine Ashley, also an Erlanger resident, said about the man who raised three children and had four grandchildren and seven great-grandkids. "Being around the children just lit him up."

Beagle started as a meter reader in Covington for Union Light, Heat & Power, which held his job for him while he served with the U.S. Navy during World War II. He returned and later was promoted to supervisor, a position he held for more than two decades at Cincinnati Gas & Electric. He retired in his mid-50s from the utilities industry after working 34 years, Ashley said.

He returned to the workforce, working at the Cork & Bottle store in Covington another 20 years, handling special orders. Playing golf with friends was a passion for Beagle, who suffered an emotional blow when his lifelong best friend, Allan "Pie" James died, in recent years.

Beagle was born a day before James, and they entered the military together. "I think that was really hard on him, just to know Allan was never going to be around again, " Ashley said.
