Ruth Schwartz, pride in home, joy in friends

Ruth Jackson Schwartz loved socializing with her friends.

She was a member of the Cosmopolitan Club and Daughters of the American Revolution. She also belonged to several bridge clubs, said her son, D. Dudley Schwartz Jr. of Fort Thomas.

"She was always so happy-go-lucky, " he said.

Mrs. Schwartz, 99, of Fort Thomas, died at 9:45 a.m. Saturday at Carmel Manor, Fort Thomas.

A homemaker, Mrs. Schwartz was especially proud of her historic 10-room home in Fort Thomas. Her son said she would decorate it and put it on display with other homes in the city.

She especially enjoyed decorating for the holidays when her husband, Daniel D. Schwartz, was still alive and the children were little.

Her son said he fondly remembers a big Christmas tree skirt she sewed by hand.

Mrs. Schwartz was a member of the St. Luke Hospital Auxiliary, where she formerly worked. Schwartz said his father helped start the hospital, so his mother helped out doing various things, such as greeting people at the front desk.

She was a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church in Fort Thomas.

Her husband, Daniel D. Schwartz, died in 1971.

Other survivors include a daughter, Barbara Smith of Williamsburg, Va.; four grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Fort Thomas. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to St. Andrews Episcopal Church, 3 Chalfonte Place, Fort Thomas, Ky. 41075, or Carmel Manor, 100 Carmel Manor Drive, Fort Thomas, Ky. 41075.

Irene Helen Kazmarek Babicz, 85, of Walton, died Thursday at Villaspring Care Center, Erlanger. She was a retired public health nurse with the Chicago Board of Health. Her husband, Chester Donald Babicz, died in 1980.

Survivors include a son, Robert Babicz of Chicago; daughters, Barbara Kibble of Richland, Wash., and Carolyn Powell of Walton; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

No services are planned. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014. Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Walton, is handling arrangements.

Roy W. Erwin Jr., 61, of Florence, died Saturday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a retired lead customer service agent with Delta Air Lines and an Air Force veteran. A son, Timothy Erwin, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Katherine Erwin; sons, Roy W. Erwin III of Norman, Okla., Bruce W. Erwin of Covington and Lance W. Erwin of Cincinnati; a brother, Dennis W. Erwin of Westwego, La.; and six grandchildren.

Services will be at 8 p.m. Tuesday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Burlington. Visitation will begin there at 5 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Pine Crest, La., Cemetery.

Clifton B. "C.B." Florence Jr., 69, of Cynthiana, died Friday at St. Joseph Hospital, Lexington. He was a retired employee of Carbide Products, and a member of Cynthiana Elks Lodge No. 438 and Indian Creek Christian Church. A son, Mike Florence, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Mary Midden Florence; daughters, Joe Louise Murphy of Corbin and Susan R. Fryman of Harrison County; and four grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home, with Elks services at 7:30 p.m. Burial will be in Battle Grove Cemetery, Cynthiana. Memorials are suggested to Indian Creek Christian Church Building Fund, 51 Waits Road, Cynthiana, Ky. 41031.

Robert E. Florence Jr., 95, of Cynthiana, died Saturday at Harrison Memorial Hospital, Cynthiana. He was a retired farmer, employee of Wiglesworth Tobacco Warehouse and an elder of Sunrise Christian Church.

Survivors include his wife, Mae Hobday Florence; a son, Melvin R. Florence of Harrison County; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Battle Grove Cemetery, Cynthiana. Memorials are suggested to Sunrise Christian Church, Cynthiana, Ky. 41031.

Johnny R. Francis, 49, of Covington, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a carpenter, artist and musician.

Survivors include a daughter, Sarah Francis of Covington; sons, Jonathan Manning of Dayton, Joshua Raymond Francis and Phillip Francis, both of Covington; brothers, Ron Rice of Norwood, Larry Francis of Harlan and Lee Francis of Cincinnati; sisters, Carol Erpert of Goshen, Ohio, Rhea Smith of Norwood, Ohio, and Tammy Frith of Erlanger; and a grandchild.

Services will be at noon Tuesday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill.

Herman Boyer Hunter, 79, of Florence, died Saturday at Mountaincrest Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Cincinnati.

Arrangements are pending at Stith Funeral Home, Florence.

Orville Kemper, 88, of Owenton County, died Saturday at New Horizons Medical Center, Owenton. He was a construction worker and a member of Victory Baptist Church, Owenton. A daughter, Tammy Kemper, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Patsy Herrington Kemper; sons, Jackie Kemper of Dry Ridge and Tim Kemper of Burlington; daughters, Emma Jean Beckham of Cincinnati and Phyllis Marksberry of Dry Ridge; 13 grandchildren, 14 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandchild.

Services were this morning at Victory Baptist Church. Burial was in IOOF Cemetery, Owenton. Memorials are suggested to Victory Baptist Church, Owenton, Ky. 40359.

Karen Davis Magee, 43, of Dry Ridge, died Thursday at St. Luke Hospital East, Fort Thomas. She was a stock clerk with B&B; Shell Station in Falmouth.

Survivors include her husband, James Magee of Union; a daughter, Karina Gutman of Crittenden; her mother and stepfather, Norma and Jack Yelton of Dry Ridge; a brother, William Jeffrey Davis of Dry Ridge; and sisters, Tabitha McMillin and Susan Hefner, both of Crittenden.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Salem Baptist Church, Walton. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 tonight at the church. Burial will be in Salem Church Cemetery, Walton. Memorials are suggested to Karen Magee Memorial Fund, in care of Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, 132 S. Main St., Crittenden, Ky. 41030.

Betty Jean McKean, 84, of Florence, died Sunday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.

Arrangements are pending at Stith Funeral Home, Florence.

Derwood Northcutt, 77, of Crittenden, died Friday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a switchman with CSX Railroad, a deacon of Grace Baptist Church and an Army Air Corps veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Sue Messmer Northcutt; sons, Danny Keith Northcutt of Glencoe and Ronnie Kevin Northcutt of Williamstown; a daughter, Bonnie Karen Northcutt of Williamstown; a brother, Donald Northcutt of Williamstown; and four grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Hill Crest Cemetery, Dry Ridge. Memorials are suggested to Oneida Baptist Institute, P.O. Box 67, Oneida, Ky. 40972.

Gladys Botkin O'Banion, 93, of Owenton, died Friday at her daughter's home in Kays Branch. She was a beautician with My Own Beauty Shop in Owenton and a member of Owenton Christian Church. Her husband, Orville Louis O'Banion, a son, E. Louis O'Banion, and a daughter, Barbara Stephenson, all preceded her in death.

Survivors include her daughter, Lenora "Bee" Spicer; sisters, Lenora King of Fulton and Elizabeth Gray of Savoy, Ind.; 11 grandchildren, 25 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. today at McDonald and New Funeral Home, Seminary Street location, Owenton. Burial will be in IOOF Cemetery, Owenton. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of the Bluegrass, 2312 Alexandria Drive, Lexington, Ky. 40504.

Mary M. Overstreet, 83, of Ghent, died Sunday at Frzauer Rehabilitation Center, Louisville. She was a homemaker and a member of United Pentecostal Church, Carrollton. Her husband, Clyde Overstreet, died in 1976.

Survivors include a son, Clyde Franklin Overstreet of Warsaw; daughters, Janice Lewellyn and Mary Ann McGuire, both of Ghent, Gladys Bird of Williamsburg and Kathy Shaffer of Columbia; a sister, Betty Whittaker of St. Petersburg, Fla.; 29 grandchildren, 36 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Graham-Dunn Funeral Home, in Carrollton, and from noon to 2 p.m. Wednesday at Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home. Burial will be in Broad Ridge Cemetery, Dry Ridge.

Anna Florence Merrill Poe, 94, of Brooksville, died Saturday at Augusta Health Care Center. She was a home nurse and a member of Brooksville Assembly of God and Women's Aglow. Her husband, Jim Roy Poe, died in 1965. A son, Jimmy Poe, also preceded her in death.

Survivors include a daughter, Norma Jean Johnson of Foster; six grandchildren, three step-grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, eight step-great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Moore and Parker Funeral Home, Brooksville. Visitation will begin there at 4 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Germantown.

Frank Sandlin, of Erlanger, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. He was a truck driver.

Survivors include his wife, Evelyn Sandlin; a son, Brian Frank Sandlin of Erlanger; brothers, Wayne Sandlin and Ronnie Sandlin, both of Florence, Dallas Sandlin of Fort Wright, and Ricky Sandlin of Independence; and a granddaughter.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at Erlanger Christian Church. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger. Memorials are suggested to Fairhaven Rescue Mission, 260 Pike St., P.O. Box 761, Covington, Ky. 41012.

Carella "Polly" Davis Satchwill, 87, of Dry Ridge, died Saturday at Grant Manor Health Care Center, Williamstown. She was a homemaker and a member of Wilmington Baptist Church, Fiskburg. Her husband, Roger Satchwill, died in 1998.

Survivors include nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in Hill Crest Cemetery, Dry Ridge. Memorials are suggested to Sherman Full Gospel Assembly, 3295 Dixie Highway, Dry Ridge, Ky. 41035.

Madlin Taylor, 88, of Dry Ridge, died Sunday at her home.

Arrangements are pending at Eckler-Hudson Funeral Home, Dry Ridge.

Betty Jo Wagoner, 65, of Flemingsburg, died Saturday at her home. She was an employee of Ken's New Market in Flemingsburg and a member of Grace Baptist Church. Sons, Mike Wagoner and Rickey Wagoner, and a daughter, Clara Ruth Wagoner, all preceded her in death.

Survivors include a daughter, Kim Wagoner of Flemingsburg; sons, Ronnie Wagoner of Flemingsburg and Mark Wagoner of Maysville; a stepdaughter, Connie Gibson of Popular Plains; a stepson, Donnie Rice of Flemingsburg; her mother, Ruth Linville Adamson Burns of Lewisburg; brothers, Tubby Adamson of Lewisburg, Duggie Adamson of Maysville, Johnny Adamson of Stanford and Duane Adamson of Akins, S.C.; sisters, Mary Harney of Dayton, Ohio, Carol Rudy of Prestonsburg, Toddy Dugan of Maysville, Cheryl Tuel of Sardis and Debbie Clark of Winchester; stepsisters, Nellie Adamson, Nancy Gifford and Rhonda Six; a stepbrother, Ronnie Burns; a grandchild, four step-grandchildren and a great-grandchild.

Wanda Deaton Warren, 56, of Independence, died Saturday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. She was a former manager with Big Lots stores and a member of Open Door Community Church in Erlanger. A son, Keith Warren, died in 1996.

Survivors include her husband, Jan Garber Warren; a son, Kevin Warren of Elsmere; brothers, James Deaton of Dry Ridge and Ronald Deaton of Morning View; a sister, Nevada Gosser of Verona; and five grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Independence Cemetery. Elizabeth J. "Betty" Wilson, 70, of Fancy Farm, died at 5:30 p.m. Friday in an auto accident in Carlisle County. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Jerome Church in Fancy Farm and Milburn Homemakers Club.

Survivors include her husband, James Harold Wilson; daughters, Joan Carter of Paducah and Helen Shupe of Independence; sons, Alan Wilson, Gene Wilson and Mark Wilson, all of Fancy Farm, Bob Wilson of Thomasville and Tom Wilson of Paducah; sisters, Shirley Denton of Titusville, Fla., and Carolyn Fields of Louisville; brothers, Kenneth Hayden and Wayne Hayden, both of Louisville, Bill Hayden of Afton, Mo., Don Hayden of Mayfield and Steve Hayden of Almo; 12 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
