Penny Maxedon, 80, 'Hayride' performer

Penny Maxedon was a petite country singer who played the big bass fiddle on the popular television program "Midwestern Hayride, " where she was known to thousands of fans as Penny West.

"The bass fiddle was bigger than she was, " recalled Mrs. Maxedon's daughter, Brenda Hitch of Falmouth. "My father ("Midwestern Hayride" emcee Dean Richard Maxedon) used to say, 'She's 95 pounds soaking wet with a bar of soap in each pocket.'"

Mrs. Maxedon, 80, of Butler, died Friday at St. Luke Hospital East in Fort Thomas.

From 1956 to 1972, Mrs. Maxedon was a mainstay of "Midwestern Hayride, " which was televised from Cincinnati's WLWT studios.

The country music program, with regular and guest performers, enjoyed a huge regional audience and, when some of the programs were syndicated nationally as "Country Hayride, " attracted fans across the country.

Mrs. Maxedon and her guitar-playing and singing husband, whose TV name was Dean Richards, performed in the Lucky Penny Trio and in the Lucky Pennies group.

The Maxedons had been married 52 years when Mr. Maxedon died in 1997.

D.J. "Penny" Maxedon, who was nicknamed "Penny" by her husband, was born on June 19, 1924, in Wabash, Ind.

She began singing when she was a little girl, and she sang and played in a band in high school. She sang on radio stations, including one in Fort Wayne, Ind., where she met and married Mr. Maxedon.

The couple came to Cincinnati shortly after World War II and were on a radio show called the "Sohio Hayride." They spent eight years at St. Louis radio station KMOX before returning to Cincinnati in 1956 to begin a 16-year run on the "Midwestern Hayride."

"They were very popular and got lots of fan letters, " said her daughter. "They were constantly working -- county fairs, state fairs and lots of other places.

"Mom loved entertaining. She was a ham, and she remained that way all her life. Even recently, when she was in the hospital and couldn't talk, she would make cute little faces and shrug her shoulders and wink at us."

After retiring from the "Midwestern Hayride, " the Maxedons occasionally performed in local churches, but spent most of their time on a dairy farm they owned.

"Mom loved being on the farm, " said her daughter. "She loved the outdoors and loved her animals. She had a couple of miniature horses and several dogs.

"She was a very loving, wonderful mother."
