Taylor Mill's Elmer Lea, youth coach

Elmer Lea was a quiet man who lived his life to the fullest.

A former semi-pro baseball player, Mr. Lea, 79, coached knothole baseball after his playing days were over. In recent years he and several friends bowled regularly, and he always tended his garden.

"He was very active, right up until Sunday. He drove his car and had a great interest in many things, " said Mildred Tebelman Lea, his wife of 52 years.

Mr. Lea, of Taylor Mill, died at 2:31 p.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center in Grant County. He was a retired custom wood-worker and fabricator for Peter Kuntz Co., Cincinnati, and a member of American Legion Post 203 in Latonia.

He also was a member of the Carpenters and Joiners Union No. 415 in Cincinnati and the Covington Moose Lodge No. 1469.

Mr. Lea was a hard worker who put his family ahead of his love of sports, his wife said. In fact, Mr. Lea became a knothole baseball coach because his children were interested in the game.

"We have had a wonderful life. He was good with his family and he liked people, " Mrs. Lea said. "He was just a good, friendly person."

Other survivors include his sons, Frank Lea of Covington and David Lea of Williamstown; a daughter, Nancy O'Brien of Independence; sisters, Kathryn Deatherage of Covington and Eva Glenn of Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.; and four grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will be there from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to Friends of Juvenile Arthritis Center, c/o Children's Hospital Medical Center, 3333 Burnett Ave., Cincinnati 45229.

Carey Leroy Arnold, 60, of Cynthiana, died Sunday at Harrison Memorial Hospital, Cynthiana. He was a retired iron worker, a U.S. Navy veteran and a member of Iron Workers Local No. 70, Louisville.

Survivors include his wife, Diana Arnold; a son, Cary L. Arnold Jr. of Cynthiana; daughters, Terri J. Arnold and Beverly McWhorter, both of Lexington, and Becky Arnold and Lori Arnold, both of Cynthiana; a brother, Robert Arnold of Glouster, Ohio; sisters, Cheryl Stanfield of Trimble, Ohio, and Bonnie Hartley of Lexington; and four grandsons.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Ware Funeral Home, Cynthiana. Visitation will be there from 6 to 8 p.m. today. Burial will be in Battle Grove Cemetery, Cynthiana. Memorials are suggested to American Lung Association, 11113 Kenwood Road, Cincinnati 45242.

Georgina Pfetzer Brinkman, 76, of Cincinnati, died Sunday at Hilltop Nursing Home, Cincinnati. She was a retired teacher with St. Catherine of Siena Church, Cincinnati.

Survivors include her husband, Joe Brinkman; daughters, Suzanne Bazeley of Cincinnati and Maureen Saner of Batesville, Ind.; sons, Paul Brinkman of Ft. Wright and Greg Brinkman of Ft. Thomas; a brother, Ralph Pfetzer of Park Hills; a sister, Louise "Sis" Lushek of Villa Hills; 16 grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.

Mass of Christian burial will be 11:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Catherine of Siena Church, Cincinnati. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at Neidhard-Minges Funeral Home, Cincinnati. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Ft. Wright. Memorials are suggested to F.R.E.S.H. Fund, c/o St. Catherine Church, 2848 Fischer Place, Cincinnati 45211.

Mary Jo Chipman, 74, of Asheboro, N.C., formerly of Falmouth, died Monday at Moses Cone Hospital, Greensboro, N.C. She was a volunteer director for Bethesda and Jewish hospitals in Cincinnati and a former director of personnel and volunteer director with Wooster Community Hospital, Wooster, Ohio. She also was a member of Falmouth Methodist Church.

Survivors include a sister, Dorothy C. Potter of Asheboro; and a brother, Fred T. Chipman Jr. of Falmouth.

Memorial services are pending with Peoples Funeral Home, Falmouth. Memorials are suggested to Asheboro Public Library, 201 Worth St., Asheboro, N.C. 27203.

Eula Davis, 72, of Florence, died at 7:50 a.m. Monday at her home. Arrangements are pending at Allison & Rose Funeral Home, Covington.

Rosemary Secter Doherty, 69, of Ft. Thomas, died at 8:15 p.m. Sunday at St. Luke Hospital East, Ft. Thomas. She was a retired sales representative with Eatem Foods of New Jersey, a member of St. Thomas Church, Ft. Thomas, and a former member of the Cincinnati Restaurant Association and the Cincinnati Culinary Society.

Survivors include her husband, John "Doc" Doherty; a son, John Secter of Ft. Thomas; daughters, Yvonne Cline of Ft. Thomas, Linette Secter-Fink of Bettendorf, Iowa, and Annette "Edie" Heringer of Highland Heights; a stepson, John Doherty of Ft. Thomas; 14 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at the church. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Dobblings Funeral Home, Ft. Thomas. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Ft. Thomas. Memorials are suggested to the church or to the American Cancer Society, 7730 U.S. 42, Suite C6, Florence 41042.

Irma Geiger, 76, of Ft. Mitchell, died Monday at Florence Park Care Center. She was a homemaker and a volunteer for the Diocese Children's Home, Hoxworth Blood Center and Blessed Sacrament Church. Her husband, Clayton J. Geiger, died in 1984.

Survivors include several nieces and nephews.

There will be no services. The body will be donated to University of Cincinnati Medical Center. Memorials are suggested to American Cancer Society, 7730 U.S. 42, Suite C6, Florence 41042 or Diocese Children's Home, Orphanage Road, Ft. Mitchell 41017.

Sylvia Holbert, 83, of Owenton, died Sunday at Owen County Hospital, Owenton. She was a member of Cedar Hill Baptist Church.

Survivors include a son, Harry F. Holbert of Seattle; a brother, Rueben Poland of Warsaw; two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at McDonald Funeral Home, Main St., Owenton. Visitation will be there from 4 to 9 p.m. today. Burial will be in I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Owenton. Memorials are suggested to Long Ridge Baptist Church.

Herman C. Livengood, 87, of Williamstown, died at 8:15 p.m. Sunday at St. Joseph Hospital, Lexington. He was a farmer and a former bus driver for Grant County schools. His wife, Kathleen Fisher Livengood, died in 1993.

Survivors include a son, H T. "Tommy" Livengood of Williamstown; sisters, Frances Miller of Mt. Orab, Ohio, Hazel Hubbard of Paris, and Nancy Hamn of Tipp City, Ohio; two grandsons and three great-grandchildren.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Elliston-Stanley Funeral Home, Williamstown. Visitation will be there from 5 to 9 p.m. today. Burial will be in Mt. Olivet Catholic Cemetery, Paris. Memorials are suggested to American Heart Association, 1885 Dixie Highway, Suite 250, Ft. Wright 41011.

Hayley Jean Massey, 5 days, died at 10:20 a.m. Sunday at Good Samaritan Hospital, Cincinnati.

Survivors include her parents, Charles Eric and Donna Jean Massey of Burlington; grandparents, Leroy and Nancy Massey of Norwood, Ohio and Bruce and Thelma Jewell of Burlington; great-grandparents, Georgia Jewell of Cincinnati and Lester Day and Goldie Day of Manchester.

Graveside services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at Burlington Cemetery.

Memorials are suggested to Hayley Massey Memorial Fund c/o Eric Massey, 1805 Transparent Court, Burlington 41048. Alexandria Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Francis Maupin, 62, of Burlington, died at 10:52 a.m. Monday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence. Arrangements are pending at Allison & Rose Funeral Home, Taylor Mill.

Carl M. Miller, 78, of Butler, died Monday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. He was a retired dock worker for the Formica Corp., Evendale, Ohio.

Survivors include sons, Carl J. Miller of California, Virgil Miller of Southgate, Earl Miller of Alexandria and Larry Miller of Butler; daughters, Audrey Dennis of Falmouth, Donna Littrell of Butler and Diana Leap of Bracken County; a sister, Hazel Schnitzler of Alexandria; a brother, Stanley Miller of Independence; a stepdaughter, Marilyn Jones of Erlanger; a stepson, Dennis Harding of Dayton; 19 grandchildren and 16 great- grandchildren.

Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick. Visitation will be there from 4 to 9 p.m. today. Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery.

Emma Grace Morehead, 68, of Foster, died Tuesday at St. Luke Hospital East, Ft. Thomas. Arrangements are pending at Peoples Funeral Home, Falmouth.

Charlotte Parker, 62, of Crescent Springs, died Monday at her home. Arrangements are pending at Stith Funeral Home, Florence.

Lillie Mae Roundtree Pate, 77, of Cincinnati, formerly of Newport, died Monday at Christ Hospital, Cincinnati. Arrangements are pending with Jones & Simpson Funeral Home, Covington.

Selma Mae Peyton, 89, of Florence, died at 7:33 p.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a homemaker and a member of St. Paul Catholic Church, Florence. Her husband, Louis Hardin Peyton, died in 1978.

Survivors include daughters, Selma Pieper of Florence and Bonnie Smith of Elsmere; eight grandchildren and 10 great- grandchildren.

Mass of Christian burial will be 12:10 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Visitation will begin at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell.

Kayla Marie Smith, died shortly after birth, Thursday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.

Survivors include her mother, Dawn Smith of Ft. Thomas; her father, Anthony Buckler of Burlington; maternal grandparents, Judy Smith of Ft. Thomas and Ray Ihli of Oldsmar, Fla.; paternal grandparents, Bonita Bowman of Covington and Keith Buckler of Petersburg.

Services will be at the convenience of the family.

Memorials are suggested to Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) Alliance, c/o Children's Hospital Medical Center, 3333 Burnett Ave., Cincinnati, 45229-3039. Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Hebron, is handling arrangements.

Loretta A. Stewart, of Taylor Mill, died Monday at her home. Arrangements are pending with Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia.

H. Riddle Stout, 79, of Carrollton, died Monday at Carroll County Memorial Hospital, Carrollton. He was a member of First Baptist Church, Carrollton.

He also was a 50-year member and former president of Carrollton Rotary Club, and a charter member of Port William Investment Club. He served as chairman of the board of Kentucky State Bank, the Kentucky National Bank and the Star Bank of Carroll County.

He was a Coast Guard veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Carolyn Hill Stout; a son, David Lyter Stout of St. Petersburg, Fla.; a daughter, Nancy Riddle Bell of Lexington; and three grandchildren.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Carrollton Christian Church. Visitation will be from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at Tandy-Eckler-Riley Funeral Home, Carrollton. Burial will be in I.O.O.F. Cemetery, Carrollton.

Memorials are suggested to Carroll County Public Library, Carrollton Christian Church, or to the charity of the donor's choice.

Tevis Thomas, 76, of Verona, died at 3:25 p.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center Hospice, Covington. He was a farmer and a member of Concord Baptist Church, Gallatin County.

Survivors include his wife, Imogene White Thomas; sons, Steve Thomas of Dry Ridge and Kelly Thomas of Florence; daughters, Donna McClane of

Jonesville, Sandra Maddox of DeLand, Fla., Marie Deitz of Dry Ridge, Linda Bowlin of Walton and Rhonda Lyle of Falmouth; 18 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Hamilton-Stanley Funeral Home, Verona. Visitation will be there from 5 to 9 p.m. today. Burial will be in New Bethel Cemetery, Verona. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice.

Jack West, 39, of Covington, died Thursday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington.

Survivors include his mother, Betty Napier of Covington; brothers, Jerry West and Joe West, both of Covington; and a sister, Barbara Jackson of Bright, Ind.

Graveside services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Don Catchen & Son Funeral Home, Covington, is handling arrangements.
