Ludlow's Earl Lister, truck driver

Earl Lister grew up during the Great Depression and developed a strong work ethic.

A retired truck driver with Duro Bag Co. in Ludlow, Mr. Lister also grew his own potatoes, peas, green beans and carrots because he never wanted his children to be hungry. He also was an auxiliary police officer in Ludlow for years.

"All he knew was work and he loved to garden. He had this little plot behind the house in Ludlow and we all worked in it, " said a daughter, Dianna Spang of Covington.

"He had a real good sense of humor. He wasn't loud, but he could be stern with the kids. And he and his truck-driver friends would tell the biggest stories."

Mr. Lister, 76, of Ludlow, died at 3:40 p.m. Sunday at Hospice of Cincinnati.

He was a member of Unity Lodge No. 478 F&AM in Ludlow and a member of Teamsters Local Union No. 100 in Cincinnati. He was also Marine Corps veteran of World War II. His wife, Freda Lister, died in 1990.

Ms. Spang recalls growing up in a household where self-sufficiency and pride were emphasized by her father. "He got his first job cleaning out a dry cleaner's when he was 8 years old. . . . He has been working ever since."

Other survivors include a son, Donald Earl Lister of Crittenden; daughters, Peggy Back of Taylor Mill, Cynthia Smith of Hebron and Pamela Wheatley of Ludlow; his mother, Alline Johnson of Covington; a brother, Wayne Lister of Stanford; sisters, Roberta Zeller of Junction City, Jeannie Belcher of Loveland, Ohio, and Wanda Parsons of Danville; and 10 grandchildren.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Ronald B. Jones Funeral Home, Ludlow. Visitation will be 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Floral Hills Cemetery, Taylor Mill. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Cincinnati, 4310 Cooper Road, Cincinnati 45242.

Marcella Anna Bogart, 77, of Newport, died Sunday at St. Luke Hospital East, Ft. Thomas. She was a retired saleswoman with Fashion Shop, Newport.

Survivors include her husband, David W. Bogart; a son, David E. Bogart of Cold Spring; and sisters, Mary Sears and Dorothy Dietrich, both of Newport.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Corpus Christi Church, Newport. Burial will be in St. Stephen Cemetery, Ft. Thomas. Memorials are suggested to American Lung Association, 11113 Kenwood Rd., Cincinnati 45242.

Johnny H. Burgess Jr., 58, of Florence, died at 9 a.m. Monday at St. Luke Hospital West in Florence. He was a construction supervisor with Carlisle Construction Co., Wilder.

Survivors include his wife, Gloria Crist Burgess; a son, John Thomas Burgess of Cave City; a daughter, Lisa R. Sands of Alpine, N.J.; a stepson, Don Maddox Jr. of Ft. Mitchell; his mother, Mayme Burgess of Dry Ridge; a sister, Betty Marshall of Williamstown; and four grandchildren.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Entombment will be in Highland Mausoleum, Ft. Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to First United Methodist Church, Fifth and Greenup, Covington 41011.

Henry F. Clayton, 72, of Newport, died Sunday at his home.He was a retired machine operator with K-D Lamp Co., Cincinnati, and a former employee of Wiedemann Brewery, Cincinnati, and a former bartender. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Tina Clayton; daughters, Candy Green of Verona, Darlene True of Corinth, Denise Allee of Florence, Rena Clayton of Ludlow, Conna McDaniel of Burlington and Michelle Tester of Ft. Thomas; sons, Henry Clayton Jr. of Union and Ronnie Clayton of Corinth; a stepdaughter, Carla Simpson of Cincinnati; a stepson, Chester Todd of Newport; sisters, Lorraine Deaton of Highland Heights, Georgia Farley and Gloria Cooper, both of Newport; brothers, Leroy Clayton of Independence, John Clayton of Ohio, Donald Clayton of Bellevue and Earl Clayton of Florence; 27 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at noon Thursday at Radel Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate.

Lois A. McMullen Crowe, 55, of Florence, died at 2:20 p.m. Saturday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a housekeeper with several local motels and nursing homes.

Survivors include her husband, Ronald L. Crowe; a son, Norman Joseph Rice of Crescent Springs; a daughter, Tonya Ann Crowe of Florence; brothers, Tommy McMullen of Tampa, Fla., Jimmy McMullen of Milford, Ohio, and Jody McMullen of Mahopac, N.Y.; a sister, Eileen R. McMullen of Milford; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at noon Wednesday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Goshen Township cemetery in Goshen, Ohio. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Cancer Center, 1 Medical Village Drive, Edgewood 41017.

Faye M. Estep, 95, of Clarksville, Ind., formerly of Covington, died at 4:16 p.m. Sunday at Clark Memorial Hospital in Jeffersonville, Ind. She was a retired teacher at Holmes High School, Covington, and a member of Trinity United Methodist Church in New Albany, Ind. She was a member of the Retired Kentucky State Teachers Association. Graveside services were this morning at IOOF Cemetery, Carrollton. Memorial services will be 1:30 p.m. July 8 at Westminster Retirement Village in Clarksville. Memorials are suggested to the church, 2796 Charlestown Road, New Albany, IN 47150. Seabrook, Dieckmann & Naville Funeral Home in New Albany, Ind., is handling arrangements.

Linda F. Fukano, 45, of Covington, died at 5:58 p.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit in Covington. She was a cafeteria worker with Fourth District School, Covington.

Survivors include her husband, Rick Fukano Jr.; sons, Rick Fukano III, Michael Fukano and Christopher Fukano, all of Covington; a daughter, Rachel Fukano of Covington; her mother, Joan Kramer of Independence; brothers, Dan England of Rock Island, Ill., and Dave England of Independence; a sister, Cathy Egbring of Newport; her step-grandmother, Lillian Kramer of Cincinnati; and four grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Swindler and Currin Funeral Home, Latonia. Visitation will be from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Ft. Wright. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington 41014.

Ruth Gerhauser, 82, of Florence, died Sunday at Florence Park Care Center in Florence. She was a credit bureau clerical worker and a homemaker.

Survivors include a son, John "Jack" Gerhauser of Madison, Ind.; a sister, Jane Wegener of Edgewood; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Linnemann Funeral Home, Burlington. Visitation will begin at 11 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Erlanger.

Amanda Megean Griffieth, was stillborn Sunday at University Medical Center, Lexington.

Survivors include her parents, Melvin and April Utz Griffieth Jr. of Falmouth; grandparents, Melvin and Sue Griffieth of Berry, David and Kim Utz of Falmouth; and great-grandparents, Leo Williams of Cynthiana, James and Catherine Griffieth of Berry, and Freida Perkins of Falmouth.

Graveside services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Riverside Cemetery, Falmouth. Peoples Funeral Home, Falmouth, is handling arrangements.

Willard C. Heinz, 79, of Ft. Thomas, died at 4:20 p.m. Saturday at St. Luke Hospital East in Ft. Thomas. He was a retired credit manager with F. H. Lawson Co., Cincinnati, and an Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Eleanor Hackman Heinz.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Dayton. Visitation will begin there at 9 a.m. Wednesday. Burial will be in Spring Grove Cemetery, Cincinnati.

Verla Burns Hicks, 59, of Germantown, died at 1:30 p.m. Sunday at her home. She was a nurse and a member of Germantown United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her husband, Gary W. Hicks; a son, Gary Wayne Hicks Jr. of Norfolk, Va.; daughters, Melissa Ellen Hudson of Richmond, Amy Kay Tate of Lexington and Emily Anne Hicks of Columbus, Ohio; sisters, Linda Rose Wilson of Hamilton, Ohio, and Barbara Ann Burns of Amelia, Ohio; and nine grandchildren.

Services will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight at Palmer Funeral Home, Germantown, and at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the church. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery, Germantown. Memorials are suggested to the church, Germantown 41044, or Hospice of Hope, 1 West McDonald Parkway, Maysville 41056.

James "J. C." Hollon, 63, of Taylor Mill, died at 9:54 a.m. Sunday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center North, Covington. He was a retired welder with Keco Co., Florence, and a member of Crescent Squares square dancers club in Crescent Springs. He was an Army veteran.

Survivors include his wife, Phyllis Jean Hollon; sons, Dennis Hollon of Erlanger, Ron nie Crouch of Independence and Richard Crouch of Demossville; daughters, Cathy Cummins of Erlanger and Anita Green of Taylor Mill; his mother, Roxie Tolson of Erlanger; sisters, Rildateen Gahn of Crittenden and Alma Jean Davidson of Crescent Springs; and brothers, Gene Hollon of Cincinnati, Richard Tolson and Charles Tolson, both of Daytona Beach, Fla., and Robert Tolson of Warsaw.

Esther Rachel Kraft, 96, of Alexandria, died at 11:20 a.m. Monday at Lakeside Place Nursing Home, Highland Heights. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Niley Kraft, died in 1954.

Survivors include a daughter, Audrey Berry of Alexandria; a sister, Mary Wolf of Grants Lick; and one grandchild.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at Alexandria Funeral Home. Visitation will be 5 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Alexandria Cemetery.

Robert E. Lemberg, 73, of Newport, died at 10:10 a.m. Monday at Highlands of Ft. Thomas nursing home in Ft. Thomas. He was a retired iron worker and a Marine Corps veteran of World War II.

Survivors include a sister, Beverly Ward of Newport; and brothers, Kenneth Lemberg of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Roland Lemberg of Newport.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport. Visitation will begin there at 9:30 a.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Southgate. Memorials are suggested to Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, 10901 Reed Hartman Hwy., Cincinnati 45242, or to charity.

John G. Leonard Sr., 81, of Cold Spring, died Saturday at Christ Hospital, Cincinnati. He was an engineer with General Electric, Cincinnati, and a Marine Corps pilot during World War II. His wife, Eileen Mary Leonard, died in 1991.

Survivors include a son, Thomas B. Leonard of Cincin nati; a daughter, Sherry Davenport of New Cumberland, Pa.; a sister, Patricia Combs of Marble head, Mass.; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at the convenience of the family. Cremation was at Hillside Chapel, Cincinnati. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Christ Hospital, 2415 Auburn Ave., Cincinnati 45219. Alexandria Funeral Home is handling arrangements.

Carol Martin, 41, of Ponte Vedra, Fla., formerly of Northern Kentucky, died Sunday at her home. She was an editor.

Survivors include her husband, Keith Martin; her parents, Richard Eliasberg and Shiela Todd, both of Baltimore; and a brother, John Richard Eliasberg of Ponte Vedra.

Graveside services will be at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Butler Cemetery. Peoples Funeral Home, Butler, is handling arrangements.

Howard Owen, 59, of Walton, died Sunday at St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, Covington. He was a retired teacher with Pendleton County and Cincinnati Public schools, and a bus driver with Greyhound and Execuline bus lines. He was a member of Grants Lick Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Barbara Williams Owen; a son, Greg Owen of Walton; a daughter, Sheila Pelle of Taylor Mill; a brother, Homer Owen of Alexandria; sisters, Myra Jane Crowley and Kathleen Simmons, both of Butler, and Marilyn Dorsey of Crestwood; and two grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Peoples Funeral Home, Butler. Visitation will be from 4 to 9 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Butler Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Hospice Unit, 401 E. 20th St., Covington 41014, or American Cancer Society, 7730 U.S. 42, Suite C6, Florence 41042.

Mayme Bell Poole, 97, of Latonia, died at 4:15 a.m. Monday at Florence Park Care Center, Florence. She was a retired supervisor with Cincinnati Bell Telephone, and a member of Pioneers of America.

Survivors include three cousins.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Highland Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell. Connley Bros. Funeral Home, Latonia, is handling arrangements.

Paul Stracener, 70, of Covington, died Friday at his home.

Arrangements are pending at Don Catchen and Son Funeral Home, Elsmere.

William Timmers, 64, of Covington, died at 1:30 p.m. Monday at his home.

Arrangements are pending at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington.

Edna Lorraine Willis, 80, of Florence, died at 4:07 a.m. Saturday at Florence Park Care Center. She was a homemaker and a member of Florence Baptist Church.

Her husband, James L. Williams, died in 1972.

Survivors include a daughter, Donna J. Miller of Independence; sons, James L. Willis Jr. of Ozark, Ala., David A. Willis of Taylor Mill and Stephen Willis of Crittenden; a sister, Daisy Schmitt of Crestview Hills; 11 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 3 p.m. Thursday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will begin there at 1 p.m. Thursday. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Ft. Mitchell.

Robert E. Young Sr., 83, of Cincinnati, formerly of Independence, died Friday at his home. He was a retired foreman with Jones and Laughlin Co., Cincinnati, and a retired courier with Purolator Courier, Cincinnati.

Survivors include his wife, Mary D. Young; a son, Robert E. Young Jr. of Morning View; daughters, Barbara Hines and Robin Sexton, both of Delhi, Ohio; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Chambers and Grubbs Funeral Home, Independence. Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Independence Cemetery.
