William Hildebrandt, ad salesman
Odds are that you didn't know William "Hildy" Hildebrandt, but you probably knew his voice.

Mr. Hildebrandt's voice was the one heard on 25 years worth of Harry's Corner carpet store commercials, saying, "What'd you say, Harry?"

The owner, Harry Goldstein, would reply, "I don't care about making money. I just love to sell carpet, " said Larry Holt of Kenwood, who worked with Mr. Hildebrandt for about 10 years.

Mr. Hildebrandt, 79, of Anderson Township, Ohio, and formerly of Fort Thomas, died Saturday at Mercy Anderson Hospital in Anderson Township.

Mr. Hildebrandt was a radio and television commercial salesman for television stations WCPO and WKRC from the early 1950s through the 1980s.

He was the salesman who brought together television personality Willie Thall and the "Bargain City Kid" to do Rink's department store television commercials during "Big Time Wrestling" every weekend.

All the shows and commercials were live, and the wrestlers would sometimes interrupt the commercials, Holt said.

"In those days, everybody pretty much was making it up as they went along, " he said.

Mr. Hildebrandt once brought a live bear to the studio for a wrestling match, which prompted the general manager to call him from home and say, "Hildy, get that . . . bear out of there."

He sold commercials for a long list of shows that included Al Schottelkote's news broadcast, the "Pantomime Hit Parade, " "The Dennis Wholey Show, " "Bowling for Dollars, " "PM Magazine" and WKRC newscasts anchored by Nick Clooney, Rob Braun, Randy Little, Bob Jones, George Palmer and Glen Hansen.

Mr. Hildebrandt started his career with WCPO and moved to WKRC around 1962. He was WKRC's No. 1 salesman through most of the '70s and '80s, Holt said.

He won the Taft Broadcasting Co.'s Chairman's Club Award in the early '80s, given to the No. 1 volume salesman in the entire company.

When he wasn't working, Mr. Hildebrandt liked to play golf. He was a member of the Plantation Golf Club in Venice, Fla., and the Glenwood Hall Country Club.

"He was just a great, fun guy, " Holt said. "Clients loved him. The people he worked with loved him."

Mr. Hildebrandt was also a Navy veteran of World War II, and a member of the USS Santee Association. His first wife, LaVerne Elizabeth Hildebrandt, died in 2000.
