Joseph Bishop, active in community organizations

You can't say that Joseph Bishop didn't get involved.

Throughout his life, Mr. Bishop, who died Monday at Woodcrest Manor in Elsmere at age 75, worked for a variety of community organizations.

He served on the Better Schools Committee for Kenton County, and then on the Kenton County School Board. As a member of the now defunct Taylor Mill Water Commission, Mr. Bishop was instrumental in getting sewers to that city.

Scott High School made him a member of its hall of fame for his work getting the school built. That included helping to organize a circus to raise money for the school, said his widow, Nancy Marksberry Bishop.

Mr. Bishop also announced the school's football games for years, she said, and helped it get its swimming pool and football goal posts.

"If anyone would say, 'We need help, ' he would say, 'OK, '" his widow said.

Mr. Bishop also served as treasurer for the Sunny Acres Methodist Church in Taylor Mill. He also served his country during World War II, as a member of the Army medical corps.

He studied civil engineering at the University of Kentucky, graduating in 1951. He was a retired engineer for Cincinnati Bell.

Mr. Bishop loved to play euchre and pinochle with his friends, as well as golf.

"He could be real funny when he wanted to be, " his widow said.

An example: About six weeks ago he became a great-grandfather, and his children asked him, "Isn't it great to be a great-grandfather?"

"I always was a great grandfather, " he replied.
