Charles Wendt, 'Train Man' at Johnny's Toys in Latonia

Charles "Ed" Wendt, a longtime buyer for Johnny's Toys in Latonia who was known as "The Train Man" to many of his customers, died Friday at his home. The Latonia resident was 67.

Wendt ran the hobby shop at Johnny's for 35 years.

His wife, Mary Sue Kleier Wendt, said her husband loved people and especially liked to talk with train enthusiasts about model trains.

"He just couldn't get enough hobbyists to come in (the store) and talk to about how to make their layouts and how to make trees, and how to do all that stuff, " she said.

Mr. Wendt was a model railroader in his youth and started at Johnny's as a part-time worker. He was so passionate about the hobby that the store owner asked him to join the staff full-time, his wife said.

"He built the hobby department into what it was, " Mrs. Wendt said. "From one display case to now a quarter of the store."

She said her husband was an avid artist who often painted portraits. But he mostly loved to paint scenery, trains, river pictures and ships in oils and acrylics, she said.
