Jack D. Fightmaster, WWII vet and chemist

Jack D. Fightmaster had a quiet, reassuring manner that others liked to be around.

"He was so humble, and yet so strong, " said his son, Michael Fightmaster of Cincinnati. "To me, he was best when somebody needed something."

Mr. Fightmaster, 77, died at 3:18 p.m. Wednesday at his home in Dry Ridge.

He received the Distinguished Flying Cross for action he took in a bomber high above the Pacific during World War II.

A bomb, set to explode on a time delay, became stuck in the bomb bay, and Mr. Fightmaster climbed into the bay and dislodged it, said his wife, Helen.

After the war, Mr. Fightmaster studied at the University of Kentucky. After graduating from UK, he worked as a chemist, retiring in 1981 as the chief chemist for the Gulf Oil Corp. in Hoven, Ohio.

Mr. Fightmaster was an active member and former deacon with the South Side Baptist Church in Covington. He and his wife founded one of Northern Kentucky's first day-care centers there in the early 1960s.

They lived on a farm in Dry Ridge in his later years, where he loved to raise horses and cattle.

Mr. Fightmaster was a member of the Northern Kentucky University of Kentucky Alumni Association.

Two of his sons, Steven Barry Fightmaster and Jamie Donaldson Fightmaster, both preceded him in death.

Other survivors include a son, John E. Fightmaster of Dry Ridge; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 tonight at the funeral home. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell. Memorials are suggested to St. Elizabeth Home-Health Hospice, 401 E. 20th St., Covington, Ky. 41014.

Susie Ellen Carter, 83, of Covington, died at 11:40 p.m. Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood. She was a retired cook with St. Elizabeth Medical Center North in Covington and a member of St. Luke United Methodist Church, Covington.

Survivors include nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington. Visitation will begin there at noon Saturday. Burial will be at 3 p.m. Saturday at Pythian Grove Cemetery, Berry.

Mary Prues Fischer, 93, of Orlando, Fla., formerly of Covington, died at 11:55 p.m. Sunday at Sunbelt-East Nursing Home in Orlando. She was the retired owner of Bud's Handy Pantry in Covington, a member of Mother of God Church in Covington, and a member of the Ladies Altar Society there. Her husband, Irvin Fischer, died in 1972.

Survivors include a son, William D. Schaefer of Orlando; a sister, Armella Prues of Milan, Ind.; a grandchild and a great-grandchild.

Mass of Christian burial will be at noon Monday at Mother of God Church. Visitation will be from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday at Allison and Rose Funeral Home, Covington. Burial will be in Mother of God Cemetery, Fort Wright.

Gloria Joyce Goodrich, 72, of Fort Thomas, died at 6:35 p.m. Wednesday at Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport. She was a retired legal secretary with Tatenhorst & Bruestle.

Her husband, Jack Goodrich, preceded her in death.

Mrs. Goodrich bequeathed her body to the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine.

Muehlenkamp-Erschell Funeral Home, Newport, is handling arrangements.

Mora Rose Hoober, 71, of Park Hills, died Wednesday at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

She was a data entry supervisor with Federal Home and Loan Bank, Cincinnati, and a member of St. Agnes Church in Fort Wright.

Survivors include a son, John Hoober of Fort Mitchell; a daughter, Laura Sassin Huggins of Park Hills; brothers, Maurice L. Murphy of Park Hills and John J. Murphy Jr. of Elsmere; sisters, Ann Lee Ernst of Fort Wright and Judy K. Bergfeld of Hebron; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Mass of Christian burial will be at 11:30 a.m. Monday at St. Agnes Church.

Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Linnemann Funeral Home, Erlanger, is handling arrangements.

Corinne K. Jones, 91, of Corinth, died at 9:45 p.m. Wednesday at Grant Manor Nursing Home, Williamstown. She was a retired teacher and librarian with Kenton County Schools, most recently with Twenhofel Middle School. She was a member of New Columbus Baptist Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher. Her husband, William Ward Jones, died in 1988.

Survivors include a niece, Janet Prewitt of Versailles.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at New Columbus Baptist Church, Owen County. Visitation will be from 5 to 7 tonight at Rogers McDaniel Funeral Home, Corinth, and from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday at the church. Burial will be in New Columbus Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to New Columbus Baptist Church, New Columbus Road, Corinth, Ky. 41010, or American Heart Association, 2936 Vernon Place, Cincinnati, Ohio 45219.

James Roy Mayse, 72, of Newport died Wednesday at his residence. He was a retired industrial electrician for the American Tool Works and a veteran of the United States Marines.

Survivors include his wife, Lucy Mayse of Newport; sons, Bert Mayse of Crestview, Carl Mayse of Independence, James Mayse of Newport; daughters, Barbara Randle of Bromley and Brenda Spencer of Newport; sisters, Pauline Kole of Florida, Wilma Cox of Nebraska, Mary Anna Spencer of Colorado and Sue Strong of Pennsylvania; six grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

Services will begin at 1 p.m. Monday at The New Macedonia Old Regular Baptist Church, Newport. Visitation will be from 9 a.m. until time of service Monday at the church. Burial will be in the St. Stephen Cemetery.

Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick, is in charge of arrangements.

Edna Abbott Penick, 86, of Covington, died Thursday at Villaspring Care Center, Erlanger.

Arrangements are pending at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia.

Elizabeth Ceceila Rohne, 89, of Newport, died Wednesday at Highlands of Fort Thomas nursing home. She was a homemaker. Her husband, Albert Rohne, died in 1974.

Survivors include a daughter, Joan Caldwell of Butler; sons, James Rohne of Lexington, Va., Gene Rohne of Cincinnati and Gerald Rohne of Milford, Ohio; sisters, Ethel Hill and Lillian Bryant, both of Cincinnati; 13 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Saturday at Cooper Funeral Home, Grants Lick. Visitation will begin there at 11 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery, Fort Mitchell.

Hattie Moore Strasinger, 91, of Mentor, died at 11:40 p.m. Tuesday at Baptist Convalescent Center, Newport. She was a homemaker and a member of Mentor Baptist Church. Her husband, Arnold Strasinger, died in 1985.

Survivors include sons, Carl Lee Strasinger and Ronald "Bud" Strasinger, both of California; eight grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Services were this morning at Alexandria Funeral Home. Burial will be in Mount Gilead Cemetery, Carthage. Memorials are suggested to the charity of the donor's choice.

Alice Theetge, 83, of Taylor Mill, died today at St. Elizabeth Medical Center South, Edgewood.

Arrangements are pending at Connley Brothers Funeral Home, Latonia.

Stewart G. Turner, 66, of Ludlow, died yesterday at his residence. He was a retired maintenance worker for the City of Ludlow. He was a member of the Ludlow Hobo Club.

Survivors include sisters, Carol S. Davenport and Judy Foley both of Ludlow; several nieces and nephews.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Middendorf-Bullock Funeral Home, Ludlow. Visitation will be from 9 to 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be at 12:30 p.m. Saturday at Parksville Cemetery, Parksville.

Martha "Mary Belle" Epeards Wadsworth, 78, of Goshen, Ohio, died at 5:52 p.m. Wednesday at her home. She was an employee of Grants Farm in Goshen. Her first husband, William John Epeards Sr., died in 1981. Her second husband, Ralph Wadsworth, died in 1996.

Survivors include a son, William J. Epeards Jr. of Goshen; a sister, Celia Louise McDougall of Noblesville, Ind.

Services will be at 12:30 p.m. Monday at Memorial Park Cemetery, Indianapolis. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday and noon to 12:30 p.m. Monday at the cemetery.

Moore and Parker Funeral Home, Brooksville, is handling arrangements.

Crystal Florence Whitaker, 79, of Brooksville, died Wednesday at Augusta Health Care Center.

She was a homemaker and a member of United Baptist Church, Westwood.

Survivors include her husband, Elbert Damon Whitaker; sons, Arthur Whitaker of Wilmington, Ohio, and David Whitaker of Fairfield, Ohio; four grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Moore and Parker Funeral Home, Brooksville. Visitation will begin there at noon Saturday. Burial will be in Bracken Memorial Cemetery, Brooksville. Memorials are suggested to Hospice of Hope, 1 W. McDonald Parkway, Maysville, Ky. 41056.

James M. Wilson, 83, of Erlanger, died Wednesday at St. Luke Hospital West, Florence.

He was a retail manager and a member of Florence Baptist Church.

Survivors include his wife, Margaret Wilson; daughters, Peggy Cunningham of Louisville, Bonnie Brown of Owen County and Kay Coleman of Independence; brothers, Vernon Wilson of Citrus Heights, Calif., Bob Patterson of Burlington and Jack Patterson of Independence; six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at Stith Funeral Home, Florence. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 tonight at the funeral home.

Burial will be in Florence Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Florence Baptist Church, 283 Main St., Florence, Ky. 41042.
