Loris L. Nigh
1911-1999
TRENTON, Mo. -- Loris Lee Nigh, 87, Trenton, formerly of Princeton, Mo., died Wednesday, Feb. 3, 1999, at a health-care center in Trenton.
Mr. Nigh, born near Modena, Mo., on April 18, 1911, was a retired farmer. He was a lifelong resident of Mercer County, Mo., and had lived on a farm east of Mount Moriah, Mo., until moving to Princeton in 1989. He had been a resident of a health-care center in Trenton since 1998.
He was a graduate of the Princeton high school and a member of the Modena Christian Church.
On March 9, 1935, he married Bonnie L. Alexander. She survives at the same health-care center in Trenton.
Mr. Nigh was preceded in death by his parents, Wayne and Vernie; and a sister, Lesta Lamm.
Additional survivors: a son, George, Kearney, Mo.; a sister, Irene Hendrickson, Princeton; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Service: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Greenlee-Middleton Funeral Chapel, Princeton. Burial: Hamilton Cemetery, west of Modena. Visitation: after 8 a.m. today, at the funeral chapel. James F. Osterhaus
1958-1999
SENECA, Kan. -- James F. Osterhaus, 40, Seneca, died Wednesday, Feb. 3, 1999, at his residence due to complications from an apparent epileptic seizure.
Born in Seneca on April 20, 1958, Mr. Osterhaus had been a resident of the Institute of Logopedics in Wichita, Kan., for several years and other residential facilities in Kansas. In 1987, he returned to Seneca, where he was a client of the Nemaha County Training Center.
He was a member of SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Seneca.
Mr. Osterhaus was preceded in death by a sister, Joann Osterhaus.
Surviving: his father, Joseph F., Seneca; his mother, Margaret Osterhaus, Topeka, Kan.; and a brother, William J., Seneca.
Mass of Christian Burial: 10:30 a.m. Saturday, SS. Peter and Paul Catholic Church, Seneca. Burial: church cemetery. Rosaries: 2 and 7 p.m. today, at the Lauer Funeral Home, Seneca. Memorials may be made in his name to the family.

Esthel L. Owens
1935-1999
Esthel LaVonne (Spoonemore) Owens, 63, St. Joseph, formerly of Maryville, Mo., died Thursday, Feb. 4, 1999, at a St. Joseph hospital.
Mrs. Owens had been employed as a tax examiner for the Internal Revenue Service in Kansas City and as a secretary for the Maryville Implement Co.
Born in Ravenwood, Mo., on May 15, 1935, she had lived in Maryville before moving to St. Joseph in 1990.
She was a graduate of the Parnell, Mo., high school and a member of St. Gregory's Catholic Church in Maryville.
Mrs. Owens was preceded in death by her parents, Cleaven and Jessie Spoonemore; and a sister, Marcella Giesken.
Surviving: four daughters, Kim Stiens, Cindy Byergo and Mary Jane Hayes, all of Maryville, and Jennifer Abel, Winterset, Iowa; a son, Doug, Kansas City; a brother, Charles Spoonemore, Yuma, Ariz.; five sisters, LaVeta Jones, Osborn, Mo., and VonCeile Parman, Georgia Russell, Evelyn Berg and Frankie Caldwell, all of Maryville; and 11 grandchildren.
Mass of Christian Burial: 11 a.m. Monday, St. Gregory's Catholic Church, Maryville. Burial: Nodaway Memorial Gardens, Maryville. Family visitation: 7 to 8 p.m. Sunday, at the Price Funeral Home, Maryville. Memorials may be made to the Nodaway County American Cancer Society.

John J. Shuey
1932-1999
ROSENDALE, Mo. -- John J. Shuey, 66, Rosendale, died Thursday, Feb. 4, 1999, at his residence following a brief illness.
For 35 years, Mr. Shuey had been employed as an order filler for Mead Products in St. Joseph until retiring in 1998. He was a member of the International Paperworkers Union Local No. 29.
Born in Newton, Mo., on July 12, 1932, he had lived most of his life in the St. Joseph and Savannah, Mo., areas. He was a Christian.
During the Korean War, he served in the Army and received several medals.
Mr. Shuey was preceded in death by his parents, John and Bessie.
Surviving: a foster sister, Ann Hughes, Rosendale, with whom he made his home; and a nephew, Lance Hughes, Kansas City.
Service: noon Saturday, Meierhoffer Family Funeral Care, Savannah Chapel, Savannah. Burial: Memorial Park Cemetery, St. Joseph. Visitation: after 3 p.m. today, at the chapel, where the family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 tonight. Memorials may be made to the Hands of Hope Hospice in St. Joseph.

Donald A. Stewart
1920-1999
CASA GRANDE, Ariz. -- Donald A. "Dutch" Stewart, Casa Grande, formerly of Trenton, Mo., died Wednesday, Feb. 3, 1999, at a retirement home in Casa Grande.
Mr. Stewart retired from Trenton Home Foods Inc. During World War II, he served in the Army.
Born in Trenton on Nov. 28, 1920, he graduated from the Trenton high school. He was a member of the Joseph L. Norton Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 919 and Major Dale Stepp American Legion Post No. 31, both of Trenton.
On Dec. 2, 1947, he married Verlea Johnson in Little Rock, Ark. She died in 1983. Then on May 5, 1984, he married Mildred M. Hotchkiss in Casa Grande. She survives of the home in Casa Grande.
Mr. Stewart also was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Maggie M.; a brother, Jim; a half brother, Bill Engle; and four sisters, Frances Thoele, Hazel Conners, Leona Marrs and Jessie Lee.
Additional survivors: a stepdaughter, Cleta Lewis, Casa Grande; four stepsons, John O'Dell, Lawrenceville, Ga., Frank Johnson, Independence, Mo., Marvin Johnson, Joplin, Mo., and David O. Johnson, Trenton; a brother, John, Trenton; nine stepgrandchildren; and a step great-grandchild.

George V. Vials
1910-1999
KANSAS CITY -- George V. Vials, 88, Kansas City, formerly of Gower, Mo., died Wednesday, Feb. 3, 1999, at a hospital in Kansas City.
Mr. Vials had worked in furniture sales for the Gallup Map and Stationery, and retired from the ABC Office Furniture Co., both of Kansas City. He also had been an auxiliary policeman with the Kansas City Police Department during World War II.
Born in Kansas City on July 25, 1910, he had spent most of his life in Kansas City. He graduated from the Lathrop Trade School, which later became the Manual High School, in Kansas City, studing cabinet making.
Mr. Vials was preceded in death by his wife, the former Virginia Russell, in 1994; and five sisters and a brother.
Surviving: a daughter, Linda Donovan, Grandview, Mo.; two stepdaughters, Judy Holder, Gower, and Debbie Blankenhorn, Wake Forest, N.C.; two grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
Service: 10:30 a.m. today, Cox Funeral Home, Plattsburg, Mo. Burial: Green Lawn Cemetery, Plattsburg.

Marvin E. Briner
1928-1999
SAVANNAH, Mo. -- Marvin E. Briner, 70, Savannah, died Thursday, Feb. 4, 1999, at his residence after a lengthy illness.
For 33 years, Mr. Briner was a meter reader for Missouri American Water Co. until retiring in 1990. During the Korean War, he served in the Army.
Born in Holt County, Mo., on Nov. 18, 1928, he lived most of his life in Andrew County, Mo.
He was a member of the National Rifle Association; Dick Munkres American Legion Post No. 287, Savannah; and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 14000, Kansas City.
On Aug. 9, 1957, he married Shirley J. Glidewell in Fillmore, Mo. She survives of the home.
Mr. Briner was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Pamela K.; his father, Lewis O.; a brother Lewis M.; and a sister, Nina K. Bennett.
Additional survivors: two sons, Timothy, Cape Girardeau, Mo., and Terry L., Savannah; two daughters, Christina Rose, Gower, Mo., and Tammy Davis, Oregon, Mo.; his mother, Edith L. Briner, Maryville, Mo.; two brothers, Governor, Savannah, and George, Grand Junction, Colo.; five sisters, Margie Rhinehardt, Atlantic, Iowa, Nellie Michele, Mesa, Ariz., Sherrie Casey, Oklahoma, Sandra Heiman, Kansas City, and Penny Auffert, Maryville; and nine grandchildren.
Service: 2 p.m. Monday, Meierhoffer Family Funeral Care, Savannah Chapel, Savannah. Burial: Lower-Neely Cemetery, Rosendale, Mo. Visitation: after 10 a.m. Sunday at the funeral chapel, where the family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Sunday. Memorials may be made to the Noyes Home in St. Joseph.

Gilbert T. Dodd
1926-1999
CAMERON, Mo. -- Gilbert Thurston Dodd, 72, Cameron, died Thursday, Feb. 4, 1999, at his home.
For 36 years, Mr. Dodd owned and operated the G. Dodd & Son Masonry in Cameron. During his early years, he worked in masonry in Kansas City, Kan.
Born in Steele, Mo., on July 27, 1926, he had lived in Kansas City, Kan., before moving to Cameron 36 years ago.
During World War II, he served in the Army and attended a technician school in Memphis, Tenn. Mr. Dodd was a member of the Bricklayers Union Local No. 18, Kansas City; and Elks Lodge No. 2615, Cameron.
On March 8, 1947, he married Peggy J. Myers in Flint, Mich. She survives of the home.
Mr. Dodd was preceded in death by his parents, Towney and Esther; and two brothers, Mack and Odel.
Additional survivors: a son, Dennis, Cameron; three daughters, CoAnn McCary and Laurie Webb, both of Cameron, and Debbie Hulver, Concordia, Mo.; a brother, Ralph, Protem, Mo.; three sisters; and six grandchildren.

Marian E. Kincaid
1954-1999
Marian E. (Miller) Kincaid, 44, St. Joseph, died Thursday, Feb. 4, 1999, at a St. Joseph hospital.
Mrs. Kincaid was employed by the Saxton Riverside Health-Care Center.
Born in St. Joseph on June 19, 1954, she lived most of her life in St. Joseph. She was of the Baptist faith.
Mrs. Kincaid was preceded in death by her parents, Francis and Dorothy Miller.
Surviving: William P. Hutchison of the home; her husband, Jessie, St. Joseph; two sons, Jessie Jr. and Brian, both of St. Joseph; a brother, Francis Miller, St. Joseph; three sisters, Leta Neill, Linda Brown and Sandra Harding, all of St. Joseph; and four grandchildren.
Service: 1 p.m. Monday, Rupp Funeral Home, St. Joseph. Burial: Pleasant Ridge Cemetery, St. Joseph.

Brother Walter D. Landwehr
1913-1999
ATCHISON, Kan. -- Brother Walter Donald Landwehr, 85, a monk at St. Benedict's Abbey in Atchison, died after a brief illness at the Atchison hospital on Friday, Feb. 5, 1999.
A monk at the abbey for more than 64 years, Brother Landwehr assisted with many duties at the monastery, including carpentry, farming and driving a truck. From 1965 to 1967, he did maintenance work at the Maur Hill Prep School in Atchison and was a chauffeur from 1967 until retiring in 1989.
Born in Topeka, Kan., on Aug. 20, 1913, he attended the Topeka Catholic High School. After training as a novice monk, he completed his vows at the abbey in 1934.
Brother Landwehr was preceded in death by a sister, Isabelle Landwehr; and a brother, the Rev. William, a priest with the archdiocese in Kansas City.
There is no immediate family surviving.

Barbara Miller
1910-1999
ATCHISON, Kan. -- Barbara "Bobby" (Mize) Miller, 88, Atchison, died after a lengthy illness of lung cancer Thursday, Feb. 4, 1999, at her residence.
Born in Atchison on March 31, 1910, Mrs. Miller was a granddaughter of one of the three founders of the Blish-Mize Co., a 127-year-old hardware distribution company headquartered in Atchison.
She was educated in the Atchison public school system through the 10th grade and graduated from the Barstow School in Kansas City. She attended Connecticut College in New London, Conn., for two years and graduated from the University of Kansas, Lawrence, where she was a member of Pi Beta Phi sorority. A homemaker, she was a member of the Trinity Episcopal Church in Atchison.
On May 7, 1934, she married Clancy Miller in St. Joseph. He survives of the home.
Mrs. Miller was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur E. and Frances Mize.
Additional survivors: two sons, Arthur M., Oviedo, Fla., and Donelan F., Parkville, Mo.; a brother, John H. Mize Sr., Atchison; and three grandchildren.
Memorial service: 2 p.m. Monday, Trinity Episcopal Church, Atchison. The body has been cremated. Inurnment: Mount Vernon Cemetery, Atchison. Family visitation: to follow the inurnment at the John H. Mize Sr. residence at 614 N. Fifth St., Atchison. Arrangements: Becker-Dyer-Stanton Funeral Home, Atchison. Memorials may be made to the Trinity Episcopal Church or the American Cancer Society.

Clifford E. Newton
1941-1999
WATHENA, Kan. -- Clifford E. Newton, 57, Wathena, died Friday, Feb. 5, 1999, at a St. Joseph hospital.
Mr. Newton worked as an electronic technician for Sears Roebuck and Co. for 30 years, retiring in 1998. During the Vietnam War, he served in the Air Force.
Born in Lihue Kauai, Hawaii, on April 3, 1941, he was reared in Hawaii. In 1959, he moved to Amarillo, Texas, for basic training and then was transferred to Forbes Air Force Base in Topeka, Kan., in 1960 and the Philippines in 1966. He became a resident of Wathena in 1968.
Mr. Newton was a member of the First Baptist Church in Troy, Kan.; and National American Legion.
On March 20, 1965, he married Marguerite Wakeman in Wathena. She survives of the home.
Mr. Newton was preceded in death by his parents, Ira W. and Alice K.; and an infant brother, Walter.
Additional survivor: a brother, Glen, Mesa, Ariz.
Service: 2 p.m. Sunday, First Baptist Church, Troy. Family visitation: 7 to 8:30 tonight at the Harman-Rohde Funeral Home, Troy. Memorials may be made to Gideon Bibles or Campus Crusades.

Gertrude M. Ottmann
1911-1999
TARKIO, Mo. -- Gertrude Mae Ottmann, 87, Tarkio, formerly of Rock Port, Mo., died Thursday, Feb. 4, 1999, at the Fairfax, Mo., hospital.
Born in Tarkio on April 19, 1911, Miss Ottmann moved with her family to a farm east of Rock Port at an early age. In 1953, she moved into Rock Port and to a health-care center in Tarkio in 1986.
She attended the Opp Country School, near Rock Port. She was a member of the Rock Port Christian Church and a former member of the Linden Christian Church, north of Rock Port.
Miss Ottmann was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph D. and Sarah; a brother, Joseph; and a sister, Dorothy Ottmann.
Surviving: two brothers, Donald, Hamburg, Iowa, and Ralph, Omaha, Neb.
Service: 1 p.m. today, Minter Funeral Chapel, Rock Port. Burial: Home Cemetery, Tarkio. Memorials may be made to the Rock Port Christian Church. a
