Alta Ellen Shanks, 90

Alta Ellen Shanks, the daughter of Delbert Burdan and Leta Victoria (Copas) Burdan, was born. Mr. Lakey preceded Alta in born. Mr. Shanks also preceded Alta in death by her parents, three sisters, Cleo Stacks, Anna McDaniel and Opal Pool, twin brothers, Orvil and Norvil Burdan, and granddaughter, Faira Watterson Spindle.
Alta was a lifelong resident of Ava. She was a Christian and was baptized. She loved gardening, canning, and making homemade bread for her family.
Alta also loved to sew and make quilts.
Her survivors include six children and spouses, James Thomas “J.T.” Lakey and Lori, Davenport, Iowa, Lula and Donald Dyer, Springfield, Mo., Boyd and Pat Lakey, Birch Tree, Mo., Gaytha and Jim Watterson, Ava, Mo., Norma and Lee Cornelison, Charlotte, N.C., and Regina and Jim Evans, Ava, Mo.; 19 grandchildren; several great- and great-great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Services will be 2 p.m. today (Thursday, May 8) in the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, with Pastor Mark Hatcher officiating. Cemetery. Visitation was Wednesday, from 6 to 7 p.m. in the funeral home. Memorials may be made to Gideons International.

Olive Esther Deaver, the daughter of James Oliver Brixey and Grace Myrtle Wilson Brixey, was death by her parents, one brother, Alvin Brixey, and her husband, Clyde.
Her survivors include her daughter, Linda K. Campbell and husband, Paul, Mansfield, Mo.; four grandchildren, Rick Campbell, Reeds Spring, Mo., Shelley Mitchell and Dean, Ava, Mo., Brandan Campbell and Mitzi, Norwood, Mo., and Laryme Campbell and Melissa, Squires, Mo.; 14 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one brother, Dillard Brixey and Pauline, Wenatchee, Wash.; one sister, Belva Christophersen, Redmond, Wash.; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday, June 26, at the Highway Church of the Nazarene with the Rev. John Moles, Rev. Mark Hatcher, and Rev. Buddy Boyd officiating. Cemetery. Visitation was Wednesday from 7 to 8 p.m. in the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava. Memorials may be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, Gideons International, or the American Cancer Society.
Lawrence J. Shelton, 89

Lawrence J. Shelton, 89, of Independence, born Sept. 14, 1918, in Ava to Della Mae (Sanders) and Blaine Shelton. He spent his youth growing up and being educated in rural Douglas County, and then served his country in World War II. Later he took a position with General Motors-Leeds, retiring after 32 years of service.
Lawrence born to that union. After Bette married Betty Mann and they shared many special years together.
Lawrence is survived by his wife, Betty Shelton, Independence; one son, Mike Shelton, of Kansas City, Kan.; a stepson, Bruce Mann and wife, Cathy; granddaughters Melissa Chamberlain and Melinda Vincent; great-grandsons Eli and Dax Vincent; one brother, Norman Shelton and wife, Connie, of Phoenix, Ariz.; one sister, Geneva Mitchell, of Medford, Ore.; and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by many cousins of the Shelton, Sanders, and Spurlock families in Douglas County.
Funeral services for Lawrence were held at 10 a.m., Thursday, April 24, at the Noland Road Baptist Church in Independence. Burial followed with full military honors at the Floral Hills born on July 17, 1941 in Brownbranch, Mo., and went home to be with his Lord on Oct. 29, 2008 at Ava. He was 67 years of age.
Darrell was a retired funeral director and a resident of the Ava community for several years. Darrell and Charlotte Todd were united in marriage on April 22, 1961 in Ava and to this union one son was death by his parents, Rev. Glesco and Edith Roberts.
He is survived by one son, Kirk Roberts, Springfield; one grandson, Darren Roberts, Ava; one sister Janice Keith and husband, Bob, Mansfield; one brother, Denny Roberts and wife, Reanee, Ava; nephews, Lane Jenkins and Heath Roberts; several cousins and a host of other relatives and friends.
Services for Darrell will be Saturday, Nov. 1, at 11 a.m., in the Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, Ava, with the Revs. Tom Johnson and R.E. Helsley officiating. Cemetery at Brownbranch. Visitation will be Friday from 6 to 8 p.m. The family requests memorials to American Heart Association or Dann passed away on Oct. 30, 2008 at Cox Medical Center South, Springfield, Mo. Stanley was Cemetery. Officiating was the Rev. Dwain Moore. The family requests memorials to Loftin born Nov. 26, 1919, in Sulphur Springs, Ark., to Roy James Gray and Jessie Christianson Gray. He departed this life in Mt. Vernon, Mo., on June 24, 2008, at the age of 88.
He spent his early life in Arlington, S.D., then in 1935 moved with his family to Ava where his father ran the Ava Mill; he graduated from Ava High School in 1937. He attended Iberia Academy in Iberia, Mo., and Drury College where he earned a degree in music.
During World War II he served with the U.S. Army Air Force and in 1942 born. In Springfield he worked at Hoover Music Co., the Ozark Camera Shop, and as an announcer at KTTS.
Ted possessed a beautiful singing voice and was well known as a soloist at Ava High School, several Springfield churches, and the Springfield Little Theater.
He was preceded in death, he was joined by his brother, Bob Gray, of Michigan.
He is survived by his daughter, Barbara and husband, Lance Massey, of Trenton, Mich., and daughter, Dorothy and husband, Chris Straw, of Springfield; grandchildren, Jonathan Straw and wife, Lynn, of California, Kristin Straw of Chicago, and Danny Straw, of Springfield; his brother, Ronnie Gray and wife Bonnie, of Topeka, Kan.; and nieces and nephews including Marilyn Alms and Gary Kester, both of Ava.
Funeral services and burial were Thursday, June 26, at the Missouri Veterans died March 25, 2008, at his home near Cabool. He was the third child and only son of Agnes (Rogers) McDermaid and Stephen James McDermaid. He was death by his wife: Willie (Hedgecoke) McDermaid; and by four sisters and their husbands: Hazel and Clifford Schrader, Nellie and Raymond Roberts, Blanche and Ervin Hermann, and Ruth Rochelle.
He is survived by his two step-sons, James Barrett and Bill Barrett; several nieces; nephews; cousins; and friends who will miss him very much.
Graveside services were held Tuesday, April 1, at 2 p.m., in the Denlow cemetery by The American Legion Post 30 and The Lima Team Burial Detail with Jared Moore serving as bugler. Burial was in the Denlow Cemetery under the direction of the Craig-Hurtt Funeral Home, Mtn. Grove.
