Leroy R. Walker, 76

Leroy Rufus Walker, son of Rufus Walker and Ella (Harris) Walker, was passed away on Sept. 16, 2008 in Springfield, Mo., at the age of 76 years.
Leroy was a resident of Springfield for a few years moving from Rockaway Beach. On March 1, 1952 Leroy and Nancy Jane Merritt were united in marriage in Mtn. Home, Ark., and to this union three children were death by his parents, two brothers, Sam and Clifford Walker, two sisters, Ruby Walker and Lula Dye.
He is survived by his wife, Nancy Jane, of Springfield; three children and their spouses, Debbie and Dennis Washam, Diane and Ken Carr, all of Springfield, and Roy and Rhonda Walker, Republic; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one sister, Alice Rippee, Ava; several nieces, nephews, brothers-in-law, sisters-in-law and a host of other relatives and friends.
Graveside service will be Friday, Sept. 19, at 2 p.m. in the Ava died April 1, 2005, at Lafayette General Hospital, Lafayette, La., while enjoying his favorite activity, bicycle riding.
Earl was married Jacqueline Cotter and with her he had two daughters and a son. Earl worked for the U.S. Post Office as a letter carrier in Cayucos, Calif., for 17 years before retiring to Ava in 1987. Earl loved everyday spent in Ava, and especially loved spending time with his grandchildren. It was a great honor to him to be Mrs. Dean’s fourth grade class’ “Super Grandpa” each year. Earl had a passion for bicycle riding. He traveled all across this country with his bicycle. Last year he was able to travel to both New Zealand and Australia with his bicycle.
Earl was preceded in born April 19, 1932 and left this world on Sept. 30, 2008.
He is survived by his wife, Violet, of the home; daughter, Debra and husband, Paul Shrum, of Mtn. Home, Idaho, son, Arthur Towne and wife, Elaine, of Crookston, Neb., and daughter, Judith Gore and spouse, James, Murray, Charleston, S.C.; a brother, Clyde Towne and wife, Dolores, of Evanston, Wyo.; sisters, Audrey Smith, of North Platte, Neb., and Clara Russell and husband, Bill, of Emmett, Idaho; sister-in-law Joyce and husband, Junior Inman, of Fordland; brother-in-law, John and wife, Dianne Nichols, of Goodland, Kan.; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, and other family and friends.
Jerry Inman, of Dogwood, officiated at his memorial service on Saturday, Oct. 4, in North Platte, Neb.
Sam Phillips, 91

Sam Phillips, son of David and Anna (Easton) Phillips was passed away on Oct. 12, 2008, in Strafford, Mo., at the age of 91.
Sam has been a resident of Ava since 1979 after moving here from Rochelle, Ill. On Oct. 15, 1941, Sam and Dortha May (Dougherty) were united in marriage. Three children were death by his wife, Dortha May (Dougherty) Phillips; his parents; two sisters, Margaret Phillips and Hazel Phillips; four brothers, Tom Phillips, Bob Phillips, Jess Phillips, and Jack Phillips; his daughter, Charolett; three of his grandchildren; and one son-in-law, Harry Bingham.
Sam is survived by a grandchild that he and his wife had raised, Becky Johnson and her husband Randy; his daughter, Diana (Phillips) Bingham; his son, Sammy Phillips and his wife, Vickie; several grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends.
Visitation was Wednesday, Oct. 15, from 6 to 7 p.m. at Clinkingbeard Funeral Home, in Ava. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. today (Oct. 16) in the Clinkingbeard Chapel, with the Rev. Paul Welch officiating. Cemetery. Military graveside services will be conducted by the American Legion Post 112 and the VFW Post 5993.
Elizabeth (Betty) Witt, 81

Elizabeth (Betty) Constance (Cravitz) Witt Cemetery.
Elizabeth, or "Betty" as most called her, was death by her husband, John Paul Witt; her father, George Cravitz; her mother, Mary Cravitz; eight sisters; one brother; and her most recent loss, Woody (the family pet).
Elizabeth is survived by 10 children: John Witt, of Lake St. Louis and his wife, Pat, Tina Talbert, of Springfield and her husband, Keith, Cheryl Orr of Lee’s Summit and her husband, Bob, Darlene Petty of Brighton, and her husband, Randy, Diane Cunningham of Overland Park, Kan. and her husband, Bill, Dan Witt of Kansas City and his wife, Bonnie, Jeff Witt of Mullins, S.C., Rod Witt of Nixa and his wife, Sheryl, Clay Witt of McKinney, Texas and his wife, Stacy, and Anita Madche of Ava and her husband, Ray; 21 loving grandchildren; her sister, Barbara Wasilko; and a large extended family.

Helen Irene (Willhoit) Griego, 83

Helen Griego, 83, entered peacefully into eternal life Saturday morning, Nov. 15.
She was preceded in born in Longrun, Mo., but spent most of her adult life in California. She was a member of the Central Baptist Church in Alameda, Calif.
interment at Holy Sepulcher born to William and Ethel Davidson in McClurg, Mo., Nov. 9, 1918. He served in the U. S. Army Air Corps from Oct. 29, 1942 to Nov. 10, 1945.
Victor moved to Selah in March 1946. He was united in marriage to Lena Boggs, July 3, 1947.
He is survived by his wife, Lena; sister, Erma Siler; four children, son, Don Davidson and his wife, Sue, daughter, Sharon Young and husband, Jerry, daughter, Marie Cooper and husband, Bill, and daughter, Ethel Whitehouse and husband, Don; seven grandchildren and their spouses; and seven great-grandchildren.
Victor was preceded in death by his parents, William and Ethel Davidson; brother, Archie Davidson; and sister, Opal Potter.
Victor was a fruit orchardist for over 25 years and later retired from Ross Packing in 1973. He loved working in his garden and yard and really had a green thumb. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, playing pool, cards, and most of all, being with family and friends.
Victor was everyone's friend. He will be sorely missed by his family and many friends.
Funeral services were held at Shaw and Sons Funeral Directors, Feb. 22, 2005, with concluding services at Terrace Heights Memorial Park. Memorials may be made to Yakima Valley Memorial Hospital c/o Shaw and Sons Funeral Directors.
