Cindy was born Cynthia Lee Wright in Kansas City, Mo., on April 25, 1953. She was raised in Glasgow, Mo., and attended St. Mary’s Grade School and Glasgow High School in Glasgow.
“You are my STAR” “…always optimistic about everything even when there are terrible things happening.” “Immediately, I admired your vivacious and fun-loving personality.” “You truly have a gift.” “…such an amazing person with a strong heart and determination…you bring a wonderful atmosphere into the room.” “You have given me the confidence to know that I can do anything and achieve anything that I want to!”
These are just a few of the countless comments that poured forth these past three weeks as Cindy Kennedy’s body battled to overcome the devastating effects of a nearly three-year battle with breast cancer.
She was a beautiful individual with “charm” and “magnetism” who many knew from her 23 years as an outstanding educator. Most of that time spent in the Lee’s Summit R-7 School District. During her tenure, she taught first through eighth grades.
Others came to know her just last year when she was named Lee’s Summit R-7 School District 2004 Teacher of the Year.
“Teaching gives me the opportunity to grow as a person and as a teacher while leading my students to find their own strengths. Every day is fresh and fun as a teacher. Kids are the best resource for not taking yourself too seriously and the most rewarding challenge,” Cindy said.
Nicknamed “Drama Queen” for founding the KATS (Kids Achieving Theatre Skills) after-school drama program at Greenwood Elementary and for being the Summit Lakes Middle School speech/drama and video production teacher for the past three years, she proudly displayed that nickname, and all who knew her knew it to be a perfect fit.
Cindy earned a bachelor’s degree in physical education and health and elementary certification from Central Missouri State University and a master’s degree in liberal arts from Baker University. She also earned certification in speech and theater education.
Within the R-7 School District, Ms. Kennedy was a founding cadre member for the district’s Whistlestop Challenge grant, a member of the Lee’s Summit National Education Association, a member of the R-7 Committee for Performing Arts, the Language Arts Committee, her school’s Site-Based Team and the Middle School Study Committee. Ms. Kennedy presented workshops on teaching reading through music and on strengthening cooperative learning.
At SLMS, she directed this year’s fall play, served as assistant director for the school talent show and was director of the school’s annual awards assembly.
In addition, Ms. Kennedy was a member of the International Reading Association and the Speech and Theatre Association of Missouri.
Locally, she has served as an assistant softball coach, volunteered to tutor elementary students after school, taught acting at Steppin’ Out Dance Academy and volunteered on R-7 School District bond and levy issues.
She is survived by her mother, Virginia Ruether, and stepfather, Robert Ruether, both of Sunrise Beach, Mo.; father, Jerry Wright and Dolores Wright of Kimberling City, Mo.; sisters Kitty Beckett of Glasgow, Mo., Debbie Temmen of Bland, Mo., and Sheri Richey of Independence; brother David “Buck” Wright of Gladstone, Mo.; stepbrother Jeff Ruether of San Clemente, Calif.; and her children, Dustin Hackman of San Diego, Calif., and Chelsea Kennedy of Greenwood.
“There are not enough words to tell you how much you are thought of. Your spirit and strength will continue in all of the people you have touched. The world is a better place because of you.” Thank you, Cindy, for letting us all be a part of your life!
