Michelle Gay King
June 19, 1974 - May 14, 2007
Michelle Gay King, 49, Urich, died May 19, 2007, as a result of an automobile accident near Glasgow.
She was born Thursday, Dec. 12, 1957, in Olathe, Kan., the daughter of John Donald and Bette Diane (Plaut) Purtle.
Mrs. King was a homemaker.
She was baptized in the Catholic faith.
She had lived near Garden City, and had attended Sherwood High School near Creighton.
She was a loving and much loved mother, daughter, sister, aunt and friend.
Preceding her in death were two brothers, Donald L. Purtle, July 29, 1987, and J.D. Purtle, Jan. 29, 1974; paternal grandparents, Alford and LaVerne Purtle; and maternal grandparents, Robert and Jean Bolten.
Surviving are three daughters, Elizabeth Jossette King, Cheyenne Elysia King and Shelby Michelle King, all of the home; her parents, John D. and Bette Purtle, Greenwood; sister and brother-in-law, Watona King and Ned Hedrick; a niece, Shiloh King; a nephew; Patrick Fisher; an uncle and aunt, John and Diane Bolten; other relatives and many friends.
Casket bearers were Jesse Bently, John Bolten, Anthony Fair, Ned Hedrick, Paul Hemmel and Travis Miller.
A funeral mass was May 23 at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church, Harrisonville, with the Rev. Paw Lwin and Deacon Ronald Strong officiating.
A celebration of life service was May 22 at the Dickey Funeral Home, Harrisonville.
Music was provided by Donna Overcast, soloist, and Cindy Dunham, organist.
Burial was in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery, Stanley, Kan., under the direction of the Dickey Funeral Home, Harrisonville.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church Building Fund, Harrisonville, or to the Charity of one’s choice.

Carl M. Orr
Carl M. Orr, Mission, Kan., died May 26, 2007, at Indian Creek Nursing Center.
He was a veteran of World War II and he was extremely proud of his service in the U.S. Navy.
In addition, he was a long-term TWA mechanic/supervisor.
Surviving are his wife, Vera; son and daughter-in-law, Larry and Shiela Orr; daughter and son-in-law, Carolyn and Alan Emery; brother and sister-in-law, Cecil and Lucia Orr, Garden City; and four grandchildren, Catherine, Christine, Kenny and Melanie.
Private family services were held in Johnson County Memorial Gardens.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions to Grace Hospice, 9233 Ward Parkway, Suite 201, Kansas City, MO 64114.
Arrangements were under the direction of the D.W. Newcomer’s Sons Johnson County Chapel.

James A. Perkins
Oct. 1, 1957 – May 25, 2007
James Alvin Perkins Jr., 49, Amoret, died May 25, 2007.
He was born Oct. 1, 1957, in St. Joseph, the son of James Alvin and Leota Darlene (Walker) Perkins Sr.
Graveside services were May 31 at Crescent Hill Cemetery, Adrian, under the direction of Atkinson Funeral Home, Adrian.

Delbert D. Roller
May 19, 1935 – May 28, 2007
Delbert Dewayne Roller, 72, Garden City, died May 28, 2007, at his home.
He was born May 19, 1935, in historic Mundell, Ark., near Eureka Springs, Ark.
He was the oldest of two sons born to Felmar and Lottie (Davis) Roller.
On April 25, 1954, he married Edna M. McBride at the First Baptist Church in Eureka Springs.
They moved from Arkansas in 1956 to Kansas City spending a short time in Turner, Kan., before finally settling in rural Garden City in 1960.
Mr. Roller spent most of his life working as a machinist at various locations including Andy’s Machine Works, Schick Tubeveyor, Solo Cup, McFerron Machine and later retiring from Lake City Ammunition Plant.
Between the years of 1968 through 1977, he was employed by the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department as a deputy sheriff.
Other various jobs throughout his life of employment included the Holden School District, R.L. Hannah & Sons and Wal-Mart.
He received certification in criminal justice at the University of Missouri-Columbia.
Mr. Roller’s favorite pastimes included raising cattle, hunting, fishing, bowling and traveling, but his most enjoyable pastime of all was riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle.
He was a member of the Rose Hill Baptist Church, Hi-Way Dressers Motorcycle Club of K.C., Holden and Lake City Gun Clubs and was a lifetime member of HOG (Harley Owners Group).
Preceding him in death were his parents and a brother, Leroy.
Surviving are his wife of 53 years, Edna, of the home; six children, Delbert “Tim” Roller Jr. and wife, Jerre, Ronald Lee Roller, Randy Alan Roller and wife, Rita, Debra Sue Kircher and husband, Gary, Diana Lynn Briggs and husband, John, Donna Louise Kagarice and husband, Jack; 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
Honorary casket bearers were Albert Wakeman Jr., Shawn Adair, Jeremy Roller, Rusty Kircher, John Briggs II, Dean Shaibley, Steve Morea, Rob Broswick, Steve Blevins, Jason Crowder and Jose Recindez.
Casket bearers were Delbert D. “Tim” Roller Jr., Joshua Roller, Randy Roller, John Briggs, Gary Kircher and Jack Kagarice.
Graveside services and burial were held May 31 at the Garden City Cemetery, Garden City, with the Rev. Charles Sutton officiating. Arrangements were under the direction of Atkinson Funeral Home, Harrisonville.
Memorial contributions may be made to Crossroads Hospice or Alzheimer’s Association.

Clara E. Surber
June 19, 1974 - May 14, 2007
Clara Elizabeth Surber, 92, Garden City, died Tuesday, May 22, 2007, at Menorah Medical Center, Overland Park, Kan.
She was born April 14, 1915, near Garden City, the daughter of Dean R. and Lorah Mae (Allen) Surber.
Ms. Surber was employed as a secretary for a state senator and representative, as well as several attorneys in Harrisonville, and several companies in Kansas City, until her retirement.
She was a 1933 graduate of Garden City High School.
She was an active member of the First Christian Church and Index Auxiliary Club, both of Garden City, and the Business and Professional Women’s Club.
She was very civic minded and politically active, having served as a delegate to the Democratic Convention in Chicago in 1956 and also attended the 1964 and 1968 conventions in an official capacity.
Ms. Surber was a lifelong area resident.
Preceding her in death were her parents.
Surviving are a sister, Mary K. Surber, of the home; a brother, Robert D. Surber and wife, Shirley, Garden City; a niece, the Rev. Candice K. Brown and husband, Bill, Des Moines, Iowa; four nephews, Robert Surber Jr. and wife, Debbie, Ronald Surber and wife, Denise, all of Harrisonville, Richard Surber, Pleasant Hill, and Rodney Surber and wife, Gayla, Lee’s Summit; numerous other relatives and many friends.
Honorary casket bearers were Carl Abbott, LouElla Allison, Jerry Ayler, Loyal George, Bettie Hampton, Stewart Hendrickson, Winona Hornbuckle, Jim Jennings, Bob Kirk, Ella Kleypas, Mary Lou Spinning, George T. Sweitzer and Nadine Wade.
Casket bearers were Bill Brown, Tom Streicher, Richard Surber, Robert Surber Jr., Ronald Surber and Rodney Surber.
Services were May 26 at the Dickey Funeral Home, Garden City, with the Rev. John Kukovich and the Rev. Candice Brown officiating.
Music was provided by Rodney Surber, soloist, and Helen Kenney, pianist; and Jim and Stanley Schrock, Jim Jennings and Calvin Yoder.
Burial was in the Garden City Cemetery, Garden City, under the direction of the Dickey Funeral Home, Garden City.
The family suggests memorial contributions be made to the First Christian Church Memorial Fund, Garden City.

Mary Lou Bishop
May 6, 1929 - May 29, 2007
Mary Lou Bishop, 78, Drexel, died May 29, 2007, at Cass Medical Center, Harrisonville, after a year-long battle with pancreatic cancer.
She was born May 6, 1929, in Cass County, near Main City, the daughter of Ralph Monroe and Faye (Childress) Burchett.
She was valedictorian of Archie High School, class of 1946.
She attended Central Missouri State Teacher’s College in Warrensburg.
She taught at Steen and Calvert elementary schools.
On July 22, 1949, she married Wayne Bishop at the Archie Baptist Church and retired from teaching to start a family.
She was a skilled quilter and cross-stitcher.
She was an avid reader and enjoyed crossword puzzles.
Preceding her in death were her parents; and three brothers, Roe, Earl and Clyde Burchett.
Surviving are her husband of 58 years, Wayne Bishop, of the home; a son, Dr. Charles Bishop and wife, Jean, Weatherby Lake; a daughter, Barbara Haseltine and husband, David, Houston, Texas; a sister, Rose Moyer, Prairie Village, Kan.; four grandchildren, Megan Haseltine, New York, N.Y., Phillip Haseltine, Houston, Stephanie Haseltine, Austin, Texas, Andy Bishop, Los Angeles, Calif.
Mrs. Bishop was a loving wife and mother who will be dearly missed.
Casket bearers were Andy Bishop, Phillip Haseltine, Larry Royster, David Kern, Brett Burchett and Dale Long.
Services were June 2 at the Atkinson Chapel, Harrisonville, with the Rev. Larry Hess of the Everett Community Church, Archie, officiating.
Burial was in Freeman Cemetery, Freeman, under the direction of Atkinson Funeral Home, Harrisonville.
Contributions may be made to the American Cancer Society or the American Heart Association.

Ethel Alberta Brown
March 31, 1920 – June 10, 2007
Ethel Alberta Brown, 87, Peculiar, died Sunday, June 10, 2007, at her home.
She was born March 31, 1920, in Holt County, the daughter of Luie L. and Lela (Addington) Boyles.
In 1938, she married Kenneth Leland Brown in Joplin.
Mrs. Brown had worked for Grace Clothing Company.
She also worked with her husband at their store, K.L. Brown Hardware & Implement from 1960 to 1976 and also helped with the daily operation of the family farm.
Preceding her in death were her parents; a son, James Brown, in 1994; and her husband, Kenneth, Feb. 28, 2007.
Surviving are a daughter, Judy O’Neall and her husband, Bob, Peculiar; and daughter-in-law, Judy Smith and her husband, Norman, Fairfax, Iowa; five grandchildren, Randy Winchel and his wife, Sherry, Belton, Michael Graebner and his wife, Kahra, Raymore, Jennifer Rhoad and her husband, John, St. Joseph, Chris Brown and his wife, Melanie, Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Cindy Moschella and her husband, Eric, Seneca, S,C.; 12 great-grandchildren, Josh, Krystal, Ashley, Emily and Katlin Winchel, Julienne Graebner, Ian and Knox Rhoad, Adan and Molly Brown and Wallace and Rocco Moschella, and three great-great-grandchildren, Dakota Winchel, Alana Lopez and Chance Meriman.
Cremation. No services were held.
Contributions may be made to Grace Hospice.
Arrangements were under the direction of the Atkinson Funeral Home, Harrisonville.
