Madge L. Renn
Madge Lucille Renn, 90, died Jan. 23, 2002 at the home of her daughter in Piedmont, Mo.
She was born Sept. 11, 1911 in Pinkneyville, Ill., daughter of the late James and Mary Owen.
She was united in marriage to Mellie Renn in 1931 at White County, Ill., and he preceded her in death June 25, 1984.
Mrs. Renn had been a member of Victory Baptist Temple since 1989.
She was a homemaker.
She is survived by three daughters, Beverly (Raymond) Campbell, Portage, Ind., Martha (Michael) Hernandez, Gary, Ind., Mary Elizabeth Nicholson, Piedmont; three brothers, James Owen, Centralia, Ill., Nelson Owen, Mehlville, Ind., David Owen, McLeansboro, Ill; one sister, Wanda Miller, McLeansboro, Ill.; seven grandchildren; one adopted grandchild; 20 great-grandchildren; two adopted great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren.
In addition to her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by one sister, Mildred Stewart.
The funeral was held Jan. 26 at Victory Baptist Temple with Pastor Elmo Parker and Rev. Andy Tull officiating and music by Aggie Parker, Carol Williamson and Martha Hernandez.
Pallbearers were Jim Connell, Daniel Hernandez, Sr., Andy Robertson, Michael Hernandez, Sr., John Considine and Mike Hernandez, Jr.
Burial was in Masonic Cemetery.
Services were under the direction of Morrison-Worley Funeral Chapel, Piedmont.

Henry W. Matthews
Henry W. Matthews, 99, died Jan. 21, 2002 in Silva, Mo.
He was born Dec. 1, 1902 in Cornwall, Mo., son of the late Charley and Jane (Berry) Matthews.
He married Gretchen Bennett March 7, 1925 and she preceded him in death March 17, 1997.
Mr. Matthews worked as a sawyer in a sawmill and for Corregan Construction in St. Louis before his retirement.
He attended White Hollow Church in Silva.
Those surviving are one son, Paul (June) Matthews, Lebanon, Tenn.; two daughters, Ruby (Harold) Smith, Silva, Beatrice (Jack) Robinson, Ellington; 18 grandchildren; 36 great-grandchildren; 18 great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one brother, Elmer Mouser, two sisters, Esther Hitzeman, Pearl Cook.
The funeral was held Jan. 24 at Ruegg Funeral Home, Greenville, with Rev. Elijah Bennett and Rev. Clinton Massa officiating.
James Ruegg read the obituary.
Music was provided by Burnett Bennett, Becky Hicks, Rena Robinson and Linda Bennett.
Pallbearers were grandsons Douglas Peck, Richard Peck, Bobby Bennett, Glen Robinson, Brian Matthews and Tim Robinson.
Burial was in Bennett's Creek Cemetery, Lodi.

Ervin E. Batton
Ervin Elbert Batton, 82, of Williamsville, died March 18, 2004, at Three Rivers Healthcare North in Poplar Bluff, Mo.
He was born July 29, 1921, in Chaonia, Mo., son of the late Elbert and Sarah (Rievley) Batton.
He was united in marriage to Ollene Stafford Jan. 20, 1945, and she preceded him in death April 2, 1996.
Mr. Batton was a retired chef for John J. Pershing VA Medical Center in Poplar Bluff.
He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during WWII.
He enjoyed fishing and hunting.
He was a member of the Mt. Zion Baptist Church and the American Legion Post #153 for over 50 years.
He is survived by four children, Ray (Shirley) Batton, Anita Batton, Rick (Carol) Batton, Jantha Batton, all of Poplar Bluff; four sisters, Hassie Gibbs, Wood River, Ill., Elva Connoley, Williamsville, Louise Dingerson, Parkville, Jean Sitze, Rosewood Heights, Ill; one brother, Lloyd Batton, Hardin, Ill; six grandchildren, Eric (Shelly) Batton, Lisa, Brad, Doug, Julie and Amanda Batton; six great-grandchildren, Zach Batton, Danica Deering, Destin Deering, Haylie Batton, Tyler Batton and Jake Whitlow.
He was preceded in death by three brothers, Everett, Jack and Estel Batton and one sister, Velma Poole.
The funeral was held March 21 at Cotrell Funeral Chapel with Rev. James Capps officiating.
Burial was in Mt. Zion Cemetery with full military honors.

Alta M. Powell
Alta Mae Powell, 94, died March 15, 2004, in Lake Havasu, Ariz.
She was born Feb. 28, 1910, in Portageville, Mo.
Mrs. Powell moved to Parker, Ariz., 11 years ago from West Sacramento, Calif., where she owned and operated Alta's Spudnut Donut Shop for eight years.
She is survived by one son, Robert Powell, Sr., Parker, Ariz.; one grandson, Robert Powell, Jr.; two great-grandchildren, Jeremy and Leigha Powell; two nephews, Bobby Ray and Don Whren.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Ralph Hartley, her parents and two sisters, Lorine Ray and Alberta Whren.
Arrangements were under the direction of Lietz-Fraze Funeral Home and Crematory, Lake Havasu City.

Bessie I. Tooman
Bessie Iretha Tooman, 78, died March 18, 2004, at Three Rivers Healthcare North in Poplar Bluff, Mo.
She was born Feb. 8, 1926, in Gravelton, Mo., daughter of the late Jessie and Nellie (Skaggs) Cook.
She was united in marriage to Woodrow Swan and to this union two children were born.
He preceded her in death.
She married Charles W. Tooman, with whom she had five children.
Mrs. Tooman enjoyed church, bingo and parties at the nursing home.
She was of the Baptist faith and a homemaker.
She is survived by three sons, Ivan Swan, Fredericktown, Tom Tooman, Hiram, Lonnie Tooman, Cascade; two daughters, Retha Condray, Lowndes, Leatha Holbrook, Cascade; four brothers, Onis, Loy, Roy and Tommy Cook, all of Hiram; 15 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, Allen Swan, and one daughter, Rita Tooman Minson.
The funeral was held March 20 at Ruegg Funeral Home, Greenville, with Rev. John Schlager officiating.
Pallbearers were Kenny Garcia, Gerald Cook, Jay Rainwater, Jr. Cook, Chris Cook and Danny Davis.
Burial was in Twidwell Cemetery, Clubb.

Sherman H. Westmoreland
Sherman H. Westmoreland, 63, died March 16, 2004, at his home in Patterson, Mo.
He was born May 19, 1940, in Patterson, Mo., son of the late Harrison and Carrie (Crowley) Westmoreland.
Mr. Westmoreland was a carpenter by trade.
He is survived by two sons, Bryan Westmoreland, St. Peters, Tracy Westmoreland, St. Louis; two daughters, Terry Westmoreland, Arnold, Dawn Westmoreland, Tampa, Fla.; two brothers, McArthur "Corkey" Westmoreland, Leonard Westmoreland; one sister, Jeanette Hunter, all of Patterson; three grandchildren; one great-great-grandson.
The funeral was held March 20 at Ruegg Funeral Home, Piedmont, with Rev. David Million officiating and music by Bryan Westmoreland.
Pallbearers were Rick Fitzwater, Kenny Howard, Bryan Westmoreland, Jim DeClue, Clyde Shearrer and Howard Westmoreland.
Burial was in Patterson Cemetery.

Herbert L. Allen
Herbert Lee Allen, 68, died March 15, 2004, at Three Rivers Healthcare North in Poplar Bluff, Mo.
He was born Nov. 15, 1935, in Silva, Mo., son of the late Murphy and Martha (Rhoden) Allen.
Mr. Allen had worked for Glideaway Bed Carriage in St. Louis as a tool and die operator.
He enjoyed fishing, boating, pool and horses.
He was of the Baptist faith.
He is survived by three sons, Gene Allen, Williamsville, Tim Allen, Sullivan, Jason Allen, Williamsville; two daughters, Mona Strubinger, Silva, Sharon Marler, Greenville; his companion of 25 years, Linda McNamee, Williamsville; one brother, Vernon Allen, Pevely; one sister, Helen Fears, Cedar Hill; one stepdaughter, Kimberley Girardier, Sullivan; seven grandchildren; six great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by one grandson, Travis Marler.
The funeral was held March 18 at Ruegg Funeral Home, Greenville, with Rev. Dan Ross officiating and music provided by the Greenville Community Choir.
Pallbearers were Travis, David and Darrell Davis, Daniel Marler, Eric Allen and Jeremy Strubinger.
Burial was in New Prospect Cemetery, Silva.
