Father Gerard Fuller, OMI, 1930-2003
A local memorial service for Father Gerard Fuller, 72, of Gainesville, will be held at 11 a.m., Friday, Jan. 30 at St. William's Catholic Church. Funeral mass was held Wednesday, Jan. 29, 2003, at the Church of Our Lady of the Snows, on the grounds of the National Shrine of Our Lady of the Snows in Belleville, Ill., with Father Paul Wightman, OMI, officiating. Father Donald Dietz, boyhood friend and classmate, delivered the homily. Burial was in the Oblate Cemetery on the grounds of St. Henry's Oblate Community in Belleville, Ill.
Father Fuller died Jan. 24, 2003, at St. Elizabeth's Hospital in Belleville, Ill. He was born May 23, 1930, in Davenport, Iowa, the son of Alonzo and Helen (Moran) Fuller.
He was in his 52nd year as a Missionary Oblate of Mary Immaculate and his 47th year as a priest.
After attending St. Ambrose Academy in Davenport, Iowa, from 1943 to 1945, he entered the minor seminary, Our Lady of the Ozarks, in Carthage from 1945 to 1949. He was initiated into the Oblate way of life (Novitiate) in 1949 and 1950, pronouncing his first vows in Godfrey, Ill., on Aug. 15, 1950. He then attended philosophy courses at DeMazenod Scholasticate in San Antonio, Texas, from 1950 to 1952, theology courses at St. Joseph's Scholasticate in Ottawa, Canada, in 1952 and 1953, and Our Lady of the Snows Scholasticate in Pass Christian, Miss., from 1953 to 1956, where he was ordained a priest on Sept. 21, 1955. He received his masters of arts degree in English literature in 1961 from St. Louis University in St. Louis.
Father Fuller was involved in various pastoral assignments in Missouri, Minnesota, Illinois, Louisiana, Utah, Texas and Wisconsin. He had served as pastor of St. William's Parish in Gainesville from 1988 until the time of his death.
He was well-known on the Internet for his insightful homilies, which he offered freely to his fellow homilists and readers. He also had weekly columns in several diocesan newspapers.
Father Fuller is survived by two brothers, James Fuller of Davenport, Iowa, and Michael Fuller of Aurora, Colo.; one sister Mary Jo Mitchell of Dunedin, Fla.; and nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alonzo and Helen.

Jesse "Dave" Ward, 1924-2003
Funeral services for Jesse David Ward, 79, of Gainesville, were held Monday, Aug. 11 at St. Williams Catholic Church with Father Paul Wightman officiating. Burial was in Pleasant Grove Cemetery in New London, Iowa.
Mr. Ward died Aug. 7, 2003, at Baxter Regional Medical Center in Mountain Home, Ark. He was born March 2, 1924, in Danville, Iowa, the son of Lamont C. and Ida May (Meador) Ward. He married Eva Mae Balmer Feb. 18, 1954, in Augusta, Iowa.
He was a machinist for the Burlington Northern Railroad and retired in 1985 after 35 years. He was a member of St. Williams Catholic Church.
Mr. Ward is survived by his wife, Eva; four sons, Joseph Ward and his wife, Vicki, of Saginaw, Texas, Charles Ward and his wife, Micke, of Middletown, Iowa, Thomas Ward and his wife, Patricia, and Monte Ward and his wife, Shelly, of Burlington, Iowa; three daughters, Cindy Numann and Linda Ward, both of Burlington, Iowa, Marjorie Ward of Danville, Iowa, and Theresa Huebner of Fulton, Ill.; 14 grandchildren; and four sisters, Mae Ward of Heber Springs, Ark., Ruth Sukow of Ocala, Fla., June Kieleber of Wills Point, Texas, and Dolly Rutherford of Canton.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers; and three sisters.

Bessie Helen Oller, 1912-2002
Funeral services for Bessie Helen Oller, 89, of Newton, Kan., were held Saturday, Aug. 3 at Clinkingbeard Funeral Home with Bro. Joe Gaddy officiating. Burial was in Lilly Ridge Cemetery.
Mrs. Oller died Tuesday, July 30, 2002, at Friendly Acres Retirement Community in Newton, Kan. She was born Dec. 12, 1912, near Gainesville, the daughter of William P. and Margie (Wells) White. She married Willard Hambelton Jan. 19, 1930, at Dawt. He preceded her in death Jan. 4, 1966. She married Ralph H. Oller Oct. 8, 1969, in Newton, Kan.
She attended grade school and high school in Ozark County. She was a member of Newton Bible Church in Newton, Kan. She enjoyed reading the Bible, fishing, cooking fish for others and quilting.
Mrs. Oller is survived by her husband, Ralph; one stepson, Richard Oller of Newton, Kan.; one stepdaughter, Ruby Papendick of Pullman, Wash.; five grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; 14 step-grandchildren; 35 step-great-grandchildren; one step-great-great-grandchild; and one sister, Avis Porter of Springfield;
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Willard Hambelton; three sons, Loral Hambelton, Bobby Joe Hambelton and James C. Hambelton; a stepson, Jerry Oller; four brothers; and five sisters.
Memorials may be made to the Newton Bible School or Friendly Acres Retirement Community, in care of Broadway Colonial Funeral Home in Newton, Kan.

Woody Richards, 1949-2002
Funeral services for Woody Richards, 53, of Wasola, were held Monday, Oct. 28 at Clinkingbeard Funeral Home with Bishop Jerry Brown officiating. Military honors and burial were in Isabella Cemetery.
Mr. Richards died Oct. 25, 2002. He was born July 22, 1949, in Thomaston, Maine, the son of Woodsbury Franklin and Mariam Elizabeth (Randall) Richards. He and his wife Eileen were married March 8, 1977, in Elizabeth City, N.C.
He was a veteran, having served with the U.S. Navy in Vietnam, Granada and Desert Storm. He retired from the Navy in 1992, after serving 26-1/2 years. After retiring from the Navy, he served as a patrolman for Gainesville and was later an over the road truck driver.
He was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints in Ava.
Mr. Richards is survived by his wife, Eileen; six children, Tracy Richards of New York, Amber Gordon of South Portland, Maine, Shannon Hill of Gainesville, Kandra Bowen of Thornfield, Ricky Richards of Branson and Ronnie Richards of Oklahoma; special kids, Karl Cox of Gainesville, Debbie Ward of Portland, Maine, Donna Cobb of Mountain Home, Ark., Doreen Wages of Caulfield, Denise McCullough of Isabella; four grandchildren; one sister, Madlyn Southard of Ashville, N.C.; and his best friend, Lynn Hicks of Gainesville.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister, Doris Ward.

Bernie H. Foster, 1928-2003
Funeral services for Bernie H. Foster, 74, of Thornfield, were held at Friday, Jan. 24 at Clinkingbeard Funeral Home with Jeff Alcorn and Michael Williams officiating. Burial was in Gaulding Cemetery.
Mr. Foster died Jan. 20, 2003, in Kansas City, Kan. He was born Dec. 15, 1928, at Nottinghill, the son of George and Anna (Gaulding) Foster. He married Edna E. Seymer Oct. 27, 1950, in Yakima, Wash.
He was a member of Liberty General Baptist Church in Isabella. He worked as a zinc edger in photo engraving. He was a veteran, having served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
Mr. Foster is survived by his wife, Edna; one son, R.G. Foster and his wife, Teri, of Springfield; one daughter, Janet Williams of Kansas City, Kan.; three grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; and four step-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one son-in-law, Carl Williams; one granddaughter, Sara Andrasek; and two brothers, Baxter and Boyd Foster.
Pallbearers were Michael Williams, Lance Foster, Rick Andrasek, Steve Foster, Bob Anglin and Mike Haskins. Honorary pallbearers were Basil Gaulding, Charles Haskins, Leo Suter and Mark Suter.

Thelma N. Hawkins, 1913-2003
Funeral services for Thelma N. Hawkins, 89, of Springfield, were held Friday, June 13 in Gorman-Scharpf Brentwood Chapel in Springfield with Rev. Thomas McCain officiating. Burial was in Jackson Cemetery at Romance.
Mrs. Hawkins died June 10, 2003, at Green Haven Nursing Home in Springfield. She was born Sept. 29, 1913, in Romance, the daughter of Albert and Veda (Smith) Nance. She was married to Richard Hawkins.
She was a member of University Heights Baptist Church in Springfield. She was known as Granny to many children in the Ozark County area because of her love of helping people, especially those in need. She enjoyed cooking, gardening and comforting people. Her home was filled with friends and family.
Mrs. Hawkins is survived by one daughter, Peggy Mullins of Springfield; three sons, Dolan Hawkins of Cape Fair, J.D. (Jerry) Hawkins of Norman, Ill., and Joe Hawkins of Nixa; 12 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; four sisters, Norma Eslinger of Wasola, and Jewell Tibbits, Mablene Bryant and Ona Amyx, all of Springfield; one brother, Alvin Nance of Scotts Valley, Calif.; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Richard; her parents; two brothers, Wilford (Spud) Nance and Aurthur Nance; and one great-grandson, Jamie Reyes Medley.

Dora Doherty, 1919-2003
Dora Linn Doherty, 84, of Gainesville, died Aug. 4, 2003, at Ozarks Medical Center in West Plains.
Mrs. Doherty was born July 13, 1919, in Oregon County. She married Charles Doherty July 9, 1943, in Doniphan.
She was a homemaker and a member of the former Union Grove Freewill Baptist Church.
Mrs. Doherty is survived by two daughters, Margaret Massey of Gainesville and Deborah Endicott of Seymour; six grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; one brother, Marvin Linn of Maynard, Ark.; and two sisters, Lena Creason and Thelma Lasater, both of Gatewood.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles.

Cleo L. Bishop, 1931-2002
A memorial service for Cleo L. Bishop, 71, will be held at 2 p.m. Friday, Aug. 9 at the family farm at Sycamore, with Rev. Fred Ricley and Rev. Jerry Douglass officiating.
Mr. Bishop died July 23, 2002, in a Denver hospital. He was born May 4, 1931, in Colorado Springs, Colo., the son of Fred and Lilley May Bishop.
He was a retired tile setter and had moved to Sycamore from Denver three and one-half years ago.
Mr. Bishop is survived by his wife, Nellie, of Sycamore; five daughters, Kaleen Gray and her husband, Steven, and Angela Brown of Denver; Cleo Crystal Peters and her husband, Howard, of Fort Collins, Colo.; Wanda Kirkegaard and her husband, Mark, of Dora; and Allison Blache of Brixey; 14 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four sisters and five brothers.
