Nadine Smith Thompson

Nadine Smith Thompson, 87, of Mt. Pleasant, died Dec. 29, 2012 at Baptist Hospital in Collierville, Tenn. She was a member of Mt. Pleasant Baptist Church and the widow of Ralph Thompson.

Services were held at 10 a.m. on Jan. 2 at Holly Springs Funeral Home Chapel with burial in Mt. Pleasant Cemetery. Bro. Gerald Hodges, Bro. Gary Adams and Bro. Barry Littlefield officiated.

She leaves three sons, Raph Thompson (Geraldine) of Slayden, Moody Thompson (Dot) of Mt. Pleasant, Jimmy Thompson (Beverly) of Collierville; a daughter, Myra Bailey (Wayne) of Mt. Pleasant; two sisters, Ferrell Thompson, Bobbie Gaines, both of Collierville; a brother, William Grant Smith of Collierville; 12 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother, Wilkins Smith and a granddaughter, Tammy Skelton.

Beauty Smith Beard

Beauty Smith Beard, 62, of Virginia Beach, Va., formerly of Holly Springs, died April 6, 2013, at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital.

Graveside services were held at 2 p.m. on April 13 at Yarbrough Chapel CME Church Cemetery. Rev. J.W. Smith Jr. officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves a daughter, LaTonya Beach of Woodbridge, Va.; a son, Landrick Smith of Virginia Beach; four sisters, Betty Arnold, Stella Hall, both of Holly Springs, Lennie Sykes of Olive Branch, Judy Ross of Memphis, Tenn.; a brother, Gaston Smith of Holly Springs; and four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by three siblings, Annie M. Payne, Lydia B. Smith and Lem Johnson Smith Jr.

Mattie Sue Clardy Coleman

Mattie Sue Clardy Coleman, 89, of Memphis, Tenn., died April 5, 2013, at St. Peter Villa in Memphis. She was the widow of George Coleman. She was a member of New Bellevue Ministries in Memphis, president and secretary of the choir, secretary of Sunday school, a graduate of M.I. College and a retired cook with Baretta’s Restaurant.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on April 13 at Sims Chapel MB Church in Michigan City. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. Toney Hastings officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves her caregiver and niece, Glossie Terry of Lamar; a sister, Arlee Applewhite of Memphis; a stepsister, Ida Mae Murphy of Bolivar, Tenn.; and three brothers, Henry Clardy of Lamar, Chester Clardy of Grand Junction, Tenn., Willie Clardy of Michigan City.

Henry Clay Collins

Henry Clay Collins, 86, died April 9, 2013, at Baptist Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. He joined Rising Star Baptist Church in Holly Springs. He attended Mississippi Industrial College. He served in the United States Army from 1950 until 1956. He worked at Rust College, Mississippi Forestry and recently for Byhalia Brick and Tile Company, from where he retired.

Services were held at 12 noon on April 13 at Serenity Funeral Home Chapel. Rev. C.O. Wilkins officiated. Burial was at 10 a.m. on April 16 in West Tennessee National Cemetery.

He leaves his wife, Lacy Collins; daughters Waheedah Ali, Rita (Fred Jr.) Gatewood and Grace Mae Collins; a brother, Leon (Shirley) Moore; two sisters-in-law, Bessie Mae Collins, Robbie Jean Collins, both of Holly Springs; two granddaughters and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a brother, Bernice Collins; and two sisters, Dorothy Mae Collins Pegues and Littie Collins Smith.

Pallbearers were his nephews.

David L. Crawford

David L. Crawford, 75, of Holly Springs, died April 6, 2013, at Trinity Mission Health & Rehab in Byhalia. He held positions of church treasurer, Sunday school superintendent, choir chorister and member of the trustee board, member and lead singer for Yarbrough Chapel Choir, male chorus and the Twilight Singers, a former member of the Voices of Zion in Milwaukee, Wisc., and a retired transit bus driver with Milwaukee Transit Bus Company.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on April 12 at Yarbrough Chapel CME Church, where he was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. Joe T. Lester officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves his wife, Lessie Ware Crawford; six sons, David Crawford Jr., Allen Crawford, both of Milwaukee, Timothy Pratt (Lavoni) of Michigan, Warren Crawford (Lorean), Tommy Crawford (Terri), and Tarris Crawford (Lavetta) all of Milwaukee; a daughter, Sherry R. Crawford of Milwaukee; four stepsons, John, Quinee, Stephen and Steven Jackson of Milwaukee; a stepdaughter, Lasonya Jackson of Milwaukee; two brothers, Cleo Jr. and Donald (Michelle) Crawford of Milwaukee; three sisters, Ora Crawford, Henretta (Kern) Ferqus, Darlene (Veo) Bronesfield, all of Milwaukee; a goddaughter and caregiver, Diann Finley; and goddaughter, Sheila Pool.

He was preceded in death by three brothers, George, Edward, Howard Crawford; three sisters, Edna and Ruby Spinks, Cleothis Crawford; and a stepson, Lavonski Jackson.

Susan Fleming

Susan Fleming, 49, of Ashland, died April 9, 2013, at The Med. She was employed in janitorial services.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on April 13 at Ashland Baptist Church, where she was a member. Burial was in Ashland Cemetery. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves her son, Kyle Chandler Elliott of Ashland; her father, William “Bill” Fleming of Michigan City; her mother, Lynda Miller of Ripley; three brothers, Billy Fleming Jr. of Michigan City, Jim Fleming of Nashville, Tenn., David Alan Fleming of Rossville, Tenn.

Mae Eunice Smith Hardin

Mae Eunice Smith Hardin, 85, of Holly Springs, died April 9, 2013, at Baptist Hospital-Desoto in Southaven. She was the widow of Andrew Hardin. She was a member of her church’s mother’s board and a member of the church choir.

Services were held at 2:30 p.m. on April 14 at Mt. Moriah MB Church, where she was a member. Burial was in Mt. Peel MB Church Cemetery. Rev. R.J. Wilson officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves five daughters, Gladiola McCoy, Seraphine Lambert, both of Memphis, Tenn., Mary Ellen Harris of Chicago, Ill., Bernice Scales of Aurora, Ill., Delois Walton of Holly Springs; two sons, McArthur Hardin of Southaven, James Michael Hardin of Memphis; a sister, Seraphine Smith of Chicago; and a brother, Percine Smith of Muskegon, Mich.

Joann Hastings

Joann Hastings, 84, of Byhalia, died April 9, 2013, at Baptist Hospital in Oxford. She was a Protestant. She was a retired Lt. Col. in the U.S. Army and a veteran of Vietnam.

Graveside services were held at 1:30 p.m. on April 16 at West Tennessee Veterans Cemetery. Holly Springs Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

Zella Mae Bell Jenkins

Zella Mae Bell Jenkins, 67, of Memphis, Tenn., formerly of Holly Springs, died April 9, 2013, at her home. She was the widow of Edward C. Jenkins Sr. She was a member of Cross of Calvary Lutheran Church in Memphis, a former employee of Memphis Fire Department as fire prevention officer, a member of a kitchen ministry and a disabled teacher with Youth Villages of Memphis.

Services were held at 10 a.m. on April 13 at Doxey Auditorium/Rust College. Burial was in Cottrell Memorial Garden. Pastor Russell Belisle officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves her children, Xavier Hoskins of Baton Rouge, La., Edward Clay Jenkins Jr. of Memphis; her mother, Ellen Bogan Bell of Holly Springs; and three sisters, Velivian Bullard, Doris Parham, both of Memphis, Monet Autry of Holly Springs; a brother, Maurice Bell of Holly Springs; and four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her father, Parker Bell; and siblings, Sheriff Osborne Bell, Parker Bell Jr., Imodene Goodman and Shirley Withers.
