Mattie Mae Cullens

Mattie Mae Cullens, 93, of New Albany, died Nov. 8, 2007 at North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. She was a Sunday school teacher, a church clerk, usher, a member of the choir, a member of the mother’s board, a member of Heroines of Jericho, a retired teacher from Union County Schools after 42 years, a member of Mississippi Teacher’s Association and a member of Union County Democratic Executive Committee.

Services were held at 12 noon on Nov. 12 at Oak Grove MB Church in New Albany, where she was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. David High officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves three children, Maxine W. Adkins, Augusta P. Jackson, both of Holly Springs; Ruth E. Thompson of Richton Park, Ill.; 11 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Pallbearers were Alfred Bradley, Darrell Bradley, Larry Bradley, Chester Anderson, Willie McKenzie and J.Q. Wade.

Isac Charlie Free

Isac Charlie Free, 84, of Byhalia, died Nov. 8, 2007 at Baptist DeSoto Hospital. He was retired from the City of Collierville, a member of the Church of God and a World War II Army veteran.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on Nov. 13 at Collierville Funeral Home Chapel. Burial was in Magnolia Cemetery.

He leaves his wife of 61 years, Pearl Free; daughters, Bertie Arrans, Nita Mercer and Lucille Stephens; sons, Charles and James Free; 20 grandchildren 26 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by a son, Wayne Free.

Walter Hampton Jr.

Walter Hampton Jr., 79, of Lamar, died Nov. 2, 2007 at Baptist Memorial Hospital-North MS in Oxford. He was a retired maintenance worker with Benton County.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on Nov. 10 at Sand Hill MB Church in Lamar, where he was a member. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rev. Etoy Bogard officiated. J.F. Brittenum and Son Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

He leaves his wife, Mamie Louise Mitchell Hampton; nine daughters, Alberta Terry, Mary Gorman, both of Michigan City, Eddie Hampton, Odesser Luellen, both of Lamar, Betty Newsom of Holly Springs, Bobbie Hale of New Albany, Doris Woodard of Memphis, Tenn., Joyce Wright, Helleon Crowley, both of Columbia, Tenn.; two sons, Calvin Hampton, Terry Hampton, both of Lamar; 32 grandchildren 60 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Walter James Hampton.

Pallbearers were Freddie Hampton, Ronnie Luellen Jr., Calente’ Hampton, Rayzell Gross Sr., Justin Hampton, James Hampton Jr., Courtney Hampton, Tavis Terry, Marcus Bady, Barry Hampton, Jamel Marion, Clarence D. Gorman, Terry Hampton Jr., Tommie Hampton, Randy Hampton, Edgar Jones Jr., Calvin Hampton Jr., Marquis Hampton, Anthony Mayfield, Tilmon Hampton Jr., Trevan Hampton, Jawaun Terry, Terrence Hampton, Demetruis Marion, Jamaris Isom and Marcus Bady Jr.

Pearl Knight

Pearl E. Cisco Knight, 76, of Byhalia, died Nov. 9, 2007 at her home. She was a member of Emory Independent Methodist Church.

Services were held at 2 p.m. on Nov. 11 at Brantley Funeral Home chapel with burial in the Byhalia Cemetery.

She leaves a daughter, Mary Ann Cooper of Byhalia; two granddaughters; four great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.

Memorials may be made to Emory Independent Methodist Church.

Loise Lee Leverson

Loise Lee Leverson, 54, of Senatobia, died Nov. 6, 2007 at her home.

Services were held at 11 a.m. on Nov. 10 at St. Peters MB Church in Coldwater. Burial was in the church cemetery. Rodgers Funeral Home of Coldwater was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves three sisters, Vivian Ayers, Sally Carter, Winnie Brown, all of Senatobia; six brothers, Charles Leverson, James Leverson, Vernell Robinson, all of Memphis, Tenn., Eddie Leverson, Dorsey Leverson, Micheal Leverson, all of Senatobia.

Dorothy Martin

Dorothy Lavada Self Martin, 78, of Crowder died Oct. 31, 2007 at Baptist Hospital in Oxford. She was the widow of Joe P. Martin.

Services were held Friday, Nov. 2, at 11 a.m. in the Dickins Chapel, with burial in Crowder Cemetery. Rev. Larry Kilgore officiated at the services. Dickins Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements.

She leaves four sons, Henry Martin of Byhalia, Larry Martin of Oxford and Jim and Bob Martin of Crowder; a brother, Curtis Self of Memphis, Tenn. and sister, Jeanette Cook of Barton; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a brother John H. Self Jr.

Steven Carl Mattiuz

Steven Carl Mattiuz, 47, of Sardis Lake, died Nov. 6, 2007 at the North Mississippi Medical Center in Tupelo. He was logistics manager at Parker-Hannifin. He lived in Pennsylvania most of his life then moved in 2004 to Sardis Lake, where he owned and operated Wyatt’s Crossing Outdoors. He was a U.S. Army veteran. He attended Free Springs United Methodist Church in Harmontown.

Services were held at J.S. Burkholder Funeral Home in Allentown, Pa. Burial was in Grandview Cemetery. Private local services were held by Holland-Harris Funeral Directors Tupelo Chapel.

He leaves his wife, Kimberly Ryan Mattiuz; his father, Eugene A. Mattiuz of New Ringgold, Pa.; his stepson, MSG Gary D. Cryder II; two brothers, Michael G. Mattiuz of New Ringgold, Pa., and Peter Mattiuz of Salisbury Township, Pa.

He was preceded in death by his mother, June Mattiuz and a brother, Anthony Mattiuz.

Memorials may be made to the Cancer Society, 1800 W. Main St., Tupelo, MS 38801.
