Victor (Vic) Wokal, age 92, of Glasgow passed away on January 15, 2006 at Frances Mahon Deaconess Hospital of natural causes.
Vic was born on October 3, 1913 on the family homestead twelve miles north of Dickinson, North Dakota to Joseph and Theresa Fisher Wokal. In 1926, the family moved to south of Bowman, North Dakota. In 1941, Vic began his flying career. On October 3, 1944, he bought land west of Bowman and, along with his brother Joe, established Wokal Flying Service. While in Bowman, he was an active member of St. Charles Church, Knights of Columbus, and the Squadron Commander of the Civil Air Patrol (CAP). In 1962, he and his brother seized the opportunity to purchase a Fixed Base Operation (FBO) in Glasgow, Montana. He became a Cessna Dealer in 1947. Vic and his family moved to Glasgow in 1963. Later, Vic became sole owner of the business. As an active member in the Glasgow community, he was on the Board of Directors for the Glasgow Area Chamber of Commerce, a finance committee member of St. Raphaelâ•˙s Catholic Church, the treasurer of Valley Hangar Association, and after retirement, was appointed to the Valley County Airport Commission. In addition to the FBO, Vic served as Airport Manager. He also served as the Station Manager for Frontier Airlines and as a United States Customs Officer. In 1987, Vic retired and sold his business.
Vic's love for aviation led him to a career of instructing hundreds of students; crop dusting; providing air ambulance services; and assisting people in need during cold, hard winters by delivering mail and food and providing emergency transportation. He also provided instruction to hundreds of GI students through the GI program. One of his proudest accomplishments was the establishment of STAT Air Ambulance Service through a partnership with Kyle Hopstad and the Frances Mahon Deaconess Hospital. Glasgow is the smallest community in the United States with a twin engine, pressurized air ambulance service.
Vic loved music. For a number of years, the Wokal Family Orchestra played for dances and proms throughout the area.
Most of all, Vic loved his wife and family. In 1941, he was married to Eva Sletto at St. Charles Church in Bowman, North Dakota. Vic and Eva had three daughters: Anita, Donna, and Kris.
Vic received many awards, for which he felt very honored. These awards ranged from the Glasgow Area Chamber of Commerce's "Boss of the Year", to the Montana Pilot's Association's Senior Pilot Award in 1990 and a Special Citation from the national Aircraft Owner's & Pilot's Association (AOPA). Two of the most significant honors during his life included naming of Glasgow airport "Wokal Field" and the designation of the "Wokal Fix."
Vic was a man of spirit. It wasn't unusual to see him plowing snow or fueling an airplane in a suit and tie. One of his biggest thrills was on his 90th birthday, when he flew in an open cockpit airplane, piloted by Joe Etchart of Glasgow, and performed nine loops, one for every decade of his life. He is now an aviator in God's heavenly squadron.
Vic will be sincerely missed by his wife of 64 years, Eva; his daughters Anita (Lawren) Frost, of Glasgow; Donna (Gary) Farnsworth of Poplar; and Kris (Kevin) Magstadt of Bismarck; his five grandchildren and four great grandchildren; his brothers Vic (Barbara) Mihulka of Grafton, North Dakota; Joe (Amy) Mihulka of Bowman, North Dakota and Pete Mihulka of Glendive; Sisters-in-law Olga Wokal of Watford City, North Dakota and Alice Wokal of Bowman, North Dakota; and his many wonderful friends and fellow aviators.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Charles, Joe, and Tony, and sisters Beatrice Cotes and Eleanor Pavlicek.
"Keep 'em flying boys!"
