NAME: Arnold Wiens Age: 88
DATELINE: Glasgow, Montana
DATE OF DEATH: Sunday, January 1, 2006
CAUSE OF DEATH: Natural Causes
PLACE OF DEATH: Valley View Nursing Home in Glasgow, Mt
SERVICE: Wednesday, January 4, 2005 at 2:00 P.M.
PLACE OF SERVICE: Evangelical Church in Glasgow, Montana
INTERMENT: Highland Cemetery in Glasgow, Montana
MORTUARY IN CHARGE: Bell Mortuary of Glasgow, MT
BORN: September 13, 1917
New Year's Day 2006 dawned as the day of new, eternal beginnings for Arnold P. Wiens, who died of natural causes Sunday, January 1, at his residence at Valley View Nursing Home in Glasgow after a brief illness. He was 88.
A consummate personal evangelist whose greatest passion in life was to share with others about his faith in Jesus Christ, he was born September 13, 1917 in Chinook four years after his parents, Peter P. and Elizabeth (Peters) Wiens, had left their home in Mountain Lake, Minn., to homestead north of Chinook. His first years as a boy were spent living in a sod house. It was as a young boy attending the Bruderthaler Church Evangelical Mennonite Brethren (EMB) in Chinook that Arnold accepted Jesus Christ as his personal Savior. This occurred during a series of meetings conducted by a visiting evangelist.
The gradual decline of the Mennonite community in the Chinook area eventually lead to the closure of the Mennonite church there. Faced with not having a Mennonite church to attend, his father moved his family in 1927 to another Mennonite community in Lustre. They attended the EMB church in that area. His family farmed in that area for a time and Arnold attended school through the sixth grade. His parents moved back to Mountain Lake, Minn., and, as a young man, he joined them in that move, staying with them until their deaths.
In the 1940's, after having worked for a time at a sash and door manufacturing company in Minneapolis, he moved back to Lustre to help his brother, Herman, farm. More importantly, however, it was in Lustre that Arnold met the love of his life, Sara Toews. She had first spotted him performing his accordion at a church function and they met during a Sunday evening service at the EMB Church. But Arnold was extremely bashful as a young man and it took the persistent prompting of his nephews to enable him to muster the courage to take action. He drove onto the Abraham Toews family farm and won permission from Sara's parents to date their daughter. Their first date was a Sunday evening, after-church-service drive on the gravel roads of the Lustre community. It was after a special date spent riding on a Ferris wheel carnival ride in Frazer that Arnold, while driving back to Lustre, pulled his car over to the side of Highway 2 east of Frazer and asked Sara for her hand in marriage.
They were married on September 17, 1948 at the Mennonite Brethren church in Lustre. In 1952, after a few years spent farming near Wolf Point, they moved to Glasgow where they raised three sons and three daughters. Arnold was a loving husband, proud and devoted father and affectionate grandfather. In 1997, Arnold and Sara celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at their home on 4th Street North in Glasgow.
A hard working man, Arnold was employed in a wide variety of jobs throughout his life in Glasgow that allowed him to touch the lives of many different people, both blue-collar and professional. This included years as a caretaker at the Valley County Fairgrounds, as a construction worker, a custodian at Glasgow Air Force Base schools and other work. During his semi-retirement, he drove school bus for the handicapped children, later did custodial work at Johnnie Cafe and finished his years of semi-retirement as a handyman at the Valley County Courthouse.
He retired from work in 2001 but Arnold never retired from his main pursuit of evangelism. Having helped start a ministry at the county jail while employed full-time, he continued that ministry for many years. One of his proudest accomplishments was working with the aid of Glasgow merchants to have a sign erected along Highway 2 east of Glasgow that simply but profoundly proclaims, "Jesus Saves." In addition to evangelistic work, Arnold was also active in his beloved local church, the Glasgow Evangelical Church, of which he was a charter member when it was established in 1957. He enjoyed performing hymns and gospel songs on the harmonica and accordion, which he played simultaneously. He was a member of the Gideons International.
Arnold and Sara moved to the nursing home in 2002 where they lived happily and contentedly together. Known for a streak of feistiness and a colorful personality, Arnold relished in the freedom of being able to walk to town daily to have coffee and dessert, eat lunch or to shop. He was a familiar face to the Glasgow merchants and they were gracious to him.
He was preceded in death by four sisters, three brothers and one granddaughter.
He is survived by his wife, Sara; six children, Beverly Edler and her husband, Tom, of Youngstown, Alberta, Edith Tollefsrud and her husband, David, of Stevensville, Richard Wiens and his wife, Kari, of Glasgow, Tim Wiens and his wife, Patricia, of Billings, Gary Wiens and his wife, Pamela, of Great Falls, and Mary Leisy and her husband, Joel, of Redmond, Wash; 22 grandchildren, 3 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

SERVICE: Saturday December 31, 2005 at 2:00 P.M.

Clayton A. Wesen was born in Mohall, North Dakota on January 16, 1916 to Louis and Elvira Wesen. They lived in North Dakota until 1924, when they moved to Glasgow, Montana where the Wesen family homesteaded at the present Wesen family farm. Clayton was the second oldest out of six boys, and a brother to four sisters.
When Clayton was five years old he had polio, and missed a year of school. He had to relearn how to crawl and walk. It resulted in his left leg being shorter and his left side markedly smaller. He was just as active as the other children, and he graduated from Glasgow High School in 1934.
Clayton worked in the CC Corp, and in 1939 he attended Radio School in San Francisco.
He enlisted in the Army in 1941 in the Communication branch, where he was stationed in Alaska. On one of his leaves in Edmonton, Alberta, he met Pearl Zamotsony. After a few years of being pursued, Pearl said•ˇ, and the couple were joined in marriage on August 19, 1944. This blessed union lasted 61 years.
After their wedding, Clayton was stationed in New Orleans to train for the European Theatre. Pearl joined him in March, and they resided in the French Quarter. Fortunately the war ended in June, and Clayton was discharged from the service in late October. The couple returned to Glasgow where they lived, worked, and raised their family, and later in New Orleans. He was discharged from the service in June of 1945.
They were blessed with four children, Evelyn, Patricia, Gary and Beverly. Clayton worked as a service technician for Glasgow Electric, Rundle's, and later Wesen's, where he also built and repaired bicycles. Clayton would also fix lunch for his kids when they came home during school. Bread and gravy was his specialty and they all would watch "Days of Our Lives"•ˇ together while they ate. He had also mastered the art of making the best popcorn around. He was an avid hunter of game and birds, with his son and his brothers.
Every summer the family would take vacations to visit relatives. They traveled to Canada many times to visit their maternal grandparents, to the World's Fair in Seattle, and to Minnesota. Many times we also took extra friends along.
Clayton and Pearl loved to square dance. It was usually three nights a week and a yearly trip to the International Square Dance Convention. Clayton also had a green thumb and loved working in his large gardens. He planted and prepared for the growing season all year round. He grafted peach branches to apple trees and one summer he planted purple potatoes. He was best known for his very large and beautiful geranium plants.
Clayton and Pearl were very fortunate to be able to travel to many places in the United States and Canada. They visited Washington D.C., New York, Pittsburgh, Orlando, Toronto, and Hawaii. Clayton retired in 1988 when he was 72 years old. He continued gardening and working in his shop at home. Clayton was very active in the community and the First Lutheran Church. He was a member of the Chamber of Commerce, Jaycee's, Legion, and belonged to the Lutheran Brotherhood. He was a HAMM Radio Operator and attended many picnics with other amateur radio operators from around the state. He was also a member of the 843rd Battalion, and attended many reunions all around the USA.
The past seven years Clayton was cared for by his wife Pearl after fracturing both hips. He resided in Valley View Sunshine Square for the past three years and was cared for lovingly by the wonderful care givers there.
Clayton was preceded in death by his brothers, Alton and Forrest, his sister, Vera, and his grandson Christopher.
He is survived by his wife Pearl Wesen of Glasgow, his children Evelyn and Ivy Wells of Mountain Home, Idaho, Patricia and Ron Garwood of Nashua, MT, Gary Wesen of Glasgow, and Beverly and Mark Falcon of Glasgow. He was blessed with 12 grandchildren and 14 great grandchildren whom he dearly loved and enjoyed. He is also survived by his brothers: Maurice and John Wesen of Glasgow, Paul Wesen of Federal Way, Washington; by his sisters Rita Herbold of Glasgow, June Kimpton of Seattle, and Myrna Bell of Sheridan, Wyoming. He also has many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews that were all a very important part of his life.
Clayton was a kind and gentle man. He was a loving and supportive husband, father, brother, and friend. He will be missed by all who knew him.
