Mr. Allan Hancock Sr.

BURLINGTON - Mr. Allan F. Hancock Sr., 82, of 714 W. Front St., died at 4:15 p.m. Friday, April 24, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after a short illness.

A native of Roanoke Rapids, he was the husband of Mrs. Jean Cannon Hancock, who survives, and the son of Mr. William Scarborough Hancock and Mrs. Nellie Price Hancock, both deceased. He was retired from Seven Point Hosiery Inc. He was a former member of the Burlington Exchange Club. He had more than 40 years of service with the Boy Scouts of America and received the Silver Beaver Award and the Order of the Arrow. He was very involved in the Cherokee Council and the building of the new Boy Scout Camp. He was also a volunteer with Hospice, Habitat for Humanity and the Christmas Cheer program. He was a member of First Baptist Church of Burlington, where he was a deacon and had served on many committees through the years.

Survivors other than his wife of the home include a daughter, Mrs. Barbara Anderson of High Point; a son, Mr. Allan F. Hancock Jr. of Walton, Ky.; three stepsons, Mr. Benn Bullock of Manchester, Conn., Mr. Charles Bullock of Reno, Nev., and Mr. Michael Bullock of Charlotte; and two brothers, Mr. Murphy Hancock of Fayetteville and Mr. Lindsay Hancock of Merrimack, N.H.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday at First Baptist Church by Dr. Craig McMahan, pastor.

The family will be at the church after the service.

Memorials may be made to Christmas Cheer, 331 S. Main St., Burlington, N.C. 27215; to Habitat for Humanity, 317 E. Sixth St., Burlington, N.C. 27215; to Hospice of Alamance-Caswell, P.O. Box 2122, Burlington, N.C. 27216-2122; or to a charity of choice.

Mrs. Eary S. Carroll

BURLINGTON - Mrs. Eary Smith Carroll, 88, of Rehabilitation and Heathcare Center of Alamance died at 6:05 p.m. Friday, April 24, 1998, at the center.

Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington is in charge of arrangements which are incomplete.

Mrs. Mabel M. Collins

REIDSVILLE - Mrs. Mabel Mansfield Collins, 79, of 8318 U.S. 29 North Business, died Saturday morning, April 25, 1998, at her home.

Born Dec. 23, 1918, in Rockingham County, she was the wife of the late Mr. William Ed Collins. She was a homemaker and of the Holiness faith.

Survivors include five daughters, Ms. Frances Todd and Ms. Lillie Ward, both of Reidsville, Ms. Barbara Collins of the home, Ms. Betty Hodges of Haw River and Ms. Judy Stephens of Ruffin; a son, Mr. Edward Collins of Reidsville; three sisters, Ms. Hallie Perkins of Mebane and Ms. Ollie Paschal and Ms. Hessie Paschal, both of Reidsville; a brother, Mr. Elbert Mansfield of Reidsville; a half brother, Mr. Marvin Mansfield of Burlington; three half sisters, Ms. Maryland Mansfield of Reidsville and Ms. Bobbyjean Minor and Ms. Jeanette Ledford, both of Burlington; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Wilkerson Funeral Home Chapel in Reidsville. Burial will be in Greenview Cemetery.

The family will be at Wilkerson Funeral Home from 7 to 9 Monday evening, and at other times at the home.

Mr. Michael E. Burns

HICKORY - Mr. Michael Earl Burns, 28, of Opal Creek Drive, Conover, died Thursday, April 23, 1998, in Chester County Hospital in Chester, S.C., from an automobile accident.

A native of Elizabethton, Tenn., he married Mrs. Michelle Wagoner Burns, who survives, April 18, 1998. He was the son of Mr. Earl Burns and Mrs. Nancy Johnson Burns, who both survive. He was a graduate of Edesto High School in Cordova, S.C., and attended Appalachian State University in Boone. He was employed with a cable TV company as a cable technician. He served six years in the South Carolina National Guard. He was a member of the Valdese Church of God.

Survivors other than his wife of the home and formerly of Elon College and parents of Hickory include two brothers, the Rev. Edward Burns of Hickory and Mr. Christopher Burns of Madison, Ala.; a sister, Mrs. Jo Ann Abee of Valdese; and paternal grandmother, Mrs. Mae Burns of Hickory.

A graveside service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Monday at Bethlehem Christian Church cemetery by the Rev. James Rosser, pastor of Haw River Christian Church.

The family will be at the church one hour before the service.

Memorials may be made to the Gideons International, Catawba East Camp, P.O. Box 807, Newton, N.C. 28658.

Mrs. Catherine Clayton

HENDERSON - Mrs. Catherine Elaine Harris Clayton, 30, of 101 Island Creek Estates Road, died Friday, April 24, 1998, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill.

A native of Vance County, she was the wife of Mr. Michael Eugene Clayton Sr., who survives, and the daughter of Mr. Gene A. Harris, who survives, and the late Mrs. Judy Short Harris. She was a homemaker.

Survivors other than her husband and father of Henderson include a daughter, Ms. Julia Ann Eatmon of the home; a son, Mr. Michael Eugene Clayton Jr. of the home; her stepmother, Mrs. Nancy Cooke Harris of Henderson; three sisters, Ms. Gina Renea Harris and Ms. Kendall Nichole Harris, both of the home, and Ms. Mary Elizabeth Bailey of Burlington; four brothers, Mr. Clinton K. Harris of Henderson, Mr. Jonathon E. Boggs, Mr. James G. Boggs and Mr. Christian T. Harris, all of the home; and her maternal step grandparents, Mr. Herbert Cooke and Mrs. Margaret McLennan Cooke of Burlington.

She was preceded in death by a son, Mr. Michael E. Clayton III, who died April 4, 1998.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at Flowers Chapel by the Rev. William Wagner. Burial will be in Sunset Gardens.

The family will be at Flowers Funeral Home from 7:30 to 9 this evening, and at other times at the home of Mr. Gene Harris and Mrs. Nancy Harris, 155 Island Creek Estates Road, Henderson.

Mr. Everett F. Powel

BURLINGTON - Mr. Everett 'Doc' Filmore Powell, 77, of 4464-7 Bass Mountain Road, Snow Camp, died at 9:18 p.m. Saturday, April 25, 1998, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Durham after several years of failing health and a critical illness of one week.

A native of Guilford County, he was the husband of Mrs. Lonie Kinney Powell who survives, and the son of Mr. Leonard Hilton Powell and Mrs. Melissa Loftis Powell, both deceased. He was retired after 15 years with Sands Vending Company in Greensboro, and was owner and operator of Powells and Mountain View mobile home parks. He served with the U.S. Army 7th Infantry Division during the Campaign of the Rhineland during World War II, where he received a Bronze Service Star and Purple Heart. He was a member of The Baptist Temple.

Survivors other than his wife of the home include two sons, Mr. Jim Powell of Browns Summit and Mr. Jerry Wayne Powell of Guilford College; two daughters, Mrs. Janice Nicholson of Greensboro and Mrs. Joy Green of Browns Summit; one stepdaughter, Mrs. Jo Frances Fisher of Marietta, Ga.; two sisters, Mrs. Ruby Chrismon of Browns Summit and Mrs. Beatrice Younger of Gibsonville; six grandchildren; and three step grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Mr. Julian Powell.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by Dr. Donald R. Carter, pastor of The Baptist Temple. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.

The family will be at Lowe Funeral Home from 7 to 9 this evening and at other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to The Baptist Temple, 2224 Anthony Road, Burlington, N.C. 27215.

Ms. Daisy M. Burgh

GRAHAM - Ms. Daisy Moore Burgh, 59, of White Plains, N.Y., died Sunday, March 22, 1998, at her home.

A native of Graham, she was the daughter of the late Ms. Ollie Ruth Moore McCrorry. She was employed at Stop and Shop Supermarket in Mamaroneck, N.Y. She was a 1956 graduate of Graham High School, and formerly attended First Baptist Church of Graham.

There are no immediate survivors.

A graveside service will be conducted at 4 p.m. Tuesday at Linwood cemetery by Minister Barbara Morris.

McClure Funeral Home in Graham is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Joseph L. Wood

LOS ANGELES - Mr. Joseph Lee Wood, 28, of 1963 N. Cahsong Blvd, died at 10:48 p.m. Saturday, April 25, 1998, at his home after a sudden illness.

Born Sept. 3, 1969 in Fort Bragg, he was the son of Mr. Johnny P. Wood and Mrs. Mary E. Wood, both of Swepsonville. He was a Baptist.

Survivors other than his parents include two brothers, Mr. Phillip Wood of Tobynanna, Pa., and Mr. Johnathan Wood of Titusville, Fla.; and paternal grandmother, Mrs. Hilda Wood of Swepsonville.

A memorial service will be conducted at a later date.

Mrs. Christine C. Fairman

NAZARETH, Pa. - Mrs. Christine Clapp Fairman, 69, of 515 Knauss Road in Bushkill Township, Northampton County, died Sunday, April 26, 1998.

Born Feb. 20, 1929 in Whitsett, she was the wife of Mr. David B. Fairman, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. Grady W. Clapp and Mrs. Annie W. Clapp, both deceased. She was a former resident of Walpack Center and Northport, N.Y. She was a member of Emmanuels Lutheran Church in Bath, and a member of the Women of the ELCA. She received the 'Good Citizen of the Year in Northampton County' on Feb. 24, 1998, and was a volunteer with Gracedale, where she received a certificate for 3, 400 hours of service.

Survivors other than her husband include two daughters, Ms. Winona MacKinnon of Winnemucka, Nev., and Ms. Wendy Fagan of Cranberry Township; two sons, Mr. Kevin Fairman and Mr. Keith Fairman, both of Nazareth; five sisters, Ms. Doris Gilliam, Ms. Elsie Bonds, Ms. Billie Jean Weaver, Ms. Annie June Reece and Ms. Joan Clapp, all of North Carolina; and one brother, Mr. Bruce Clapp, also of North Carolina; and nine grandchildren.

A memorial service will be conducted at 6:30 Tuesday evening at Emmanuels Lutheran Church, 3175 Valley View Drive, Bath. Following the service, visitation will be in the church fellowship hall.

A memorial service and burial will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday [May 2] at Brick United Church of Christ in Burlington.

Memorials may be made to Emmanuels Lutheran Church or to Brick United Church of Christ cemetery Fund.

Mrs. Eary S. Carroll

BURLINGTON - Mrs. Eary Smith Carroll, 88, a resident of the Rehabilitation and Healthcare Center of Alamance, died at 6:05 p.m. Friday, April 24, 1998.

A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Alvis E. Carroll, and the daughter of Mr. Charlie William Smith and Mrs. Fannie Blanche Robertson Smith, both deceased. She was retired from Sanders Hosiery. She was a member of the Eastern Star Elizabeth Chapter 41 O.E.S., and a member of Shamrock Evangelical Methodist Church.

Survivors include three sisters, Mrs. Agnes Bland, Ms. Ruby Smith and Mrs. Deanie Kelley, all of Burlington; and two brothers, Mr. Charlie Smith and Mr. Carl Smith, both of Burlington.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Rich and Thompson Chapel in Burlington by the Rev. Lester Haney, pastor of Shamrock Evangelical Methodist Church. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.

The family will be at the Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 6 to 8 this evening.

Memorials may be made to Shamrock Evangelical Methodist Church, 3519 Maple Ave., Burlington, N.C. 27215.

Mrs. Cora W. Stanford

GRAHAM - Mrs. Cora Walker Stanford, 96, of 5313 Nick's Road, died at 7 a.m. Sunday, April 26, 1998, at the Brian Center in Durham after an illness of several months.

A native of Orange County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Dewey Collins Stanford Sr., and the daughter of Mr. James Walker and Mrs. Caroline Daye Walker, both deceased. She was a member of Snow Hill Primitive Baptist Church and attended Mary's Grove Congregational Christian Church.

Survivors include four daughters, Mrs. Virginia S. Haith and Mrs. Elizabeth Turner Williams, both of South Norwalk, Conn., the Rev. Lucy Mae Baldwin of Carrboro and Mrs. Jean S. Parrish of Graham; five sons, Mr. Walter Coy Stanford of Burlington, Mr. James Allison Stanford of East Orange, N.J., Mr. Bobby Stanford of Wheaton, Md., Mr. Roy Alvis Stanford of Philadelphia and Mr. Nelson Wright Stanford of Mebane; 29 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; and 12 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Mr. Dewey Collins Stanford Jr.

The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at Mary's Grove Congregational Christian Church by the Rev. Albert Morrow, pastor. The body will be placed in the church one hour before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will be at Hargett and Bryant Funeral Home from 6 to 7 Thursday evening, and at other times at the home of Mrs. Jean Stanford Parrish, 5267 Salem Church Road, Graham.
