Mr. William J. Meehan

PLANTATION, Fla. - Mr. William J. 'Bill' Meehan, 75, died Monday evening, April 20, 1998.

Born April 23, 1922, in Morrisville, Pa., he was the husband of Mrs. Betty Meehan, who survives. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and worked as an engineer for AT&T. He came to Burlington from New Jersey in 1947. He worked as an engineer at Western Electric.

While in Burlington he was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church. In 1964, he moved to Plantation where he was a salesman for Florida Tool and Gage. He became its president in 1975 and chairman in 1992. He was a pilot. He was a founding member of Fort Lauderdale Country Club and served as a director of Hanover Bank in Plantation.

Survivors other than his wife include four daughters, Mrs. David (GiGi) Green of Plantation, Mrs. Richard (Patty) Haynes of McClean, Va., Ms. Betsy DeWitt of Wilmington and Mrs. Don (Dale) Foster of Burlington; a son, Mr. William Meehan Jr. of Lakeland, Fla.; a brother, Mr. Joseph Meehan of Lakewood, N.J.; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

The funeral was conducted Friday at St. Gregory Catholic Church in Plantation.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer's Foundation, 8332 W. McNab Road, Tamarac, Fla., 33321; or to the AOPA Air Safety Foundation, 421 Aviation Way, Frederick, Md., 21701.

Mr. Vernon Oakley Sr.

SOUTH HILL, Va. - Mr. Vernon B. Oakley Sr., 74, died Sunday, April 26, 1998, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham.

He was the husband of Mrs. Willie Mae Morefield Oakley, who survives. He was a U.S. Army Air Corp veteran of World War II. He was an entrepreneur in the retail business in South Hill. His family owned and operated a business which began in 1946, and grew to a total of six stores in the South Hill and Kenbridge area. He was active in the operation until his retirement in 1989.

He was the past president of the South Hill Chamber of Commerce and the Rotary Club. He was a member of the Mecklenburg Board of Supervisors, former treasurer of the Lake Country Commission on Aging, and was a past member of the board of directors of the Citizen Bank of South Hill and First Virginia Bank.

He was a member of First Baptist Church where he served as chairman of the board of deacons for five different terms and served on the Finance Committee, Search Committee and Nominating Committee. He was a Sunday school teacher and a church moderator for many years.

Survivors other than his wife of South Hill include three sons, Mr. Vernon Oakley and Mr. Woody Oakley, both of South Hill, and Mr. Melvin Oakley of Eufaula, Ala.; a daughter, Mrs. Doug (Charlotte) Hoy of Elon College; four sisters, Ms. Leslie Rogers, Ms. Ruby Evans and Ms. Dorothy Williford, all of Roxboro, and Ms. Annie Lee of Kenbridge; and eight grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. today at First Baptist Church by Dr. Walter Laseter. Burial will be in Crestview Memorial Park in LaCrosse, Va.

Memorials may be made to a charity of choice.

Farrar Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Essue Covington

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Mr. Essue Covington of Birmingham died Saturday, April 25, 1998, after a long illness.

A native of Burlington, he was the husband of Mrs. Richardine Covington, who survives, and the son of Mr. Samuel Covington and Mrs. Minnie Covington, both deceased.

Survivors other than his wife include three daughters, Mrs. Lola Woods of Atlanta, Ms. Linda Pierce of Fort Wayne, Ind., and Ms. Jocelyn Covington of West Newton, Mass; a stepson, Mr. Jeffrey Allen; five sisters, Mrs. Florine Pollard of Smyrna, Del., Mrs. Ivia Mae Benson of Philadelphia, Mrs. Vera Davis of Burlington, Mrs. Nora Trollinger of Graham and Ms. Acquanetta Covington of Yeadon, Pa.; a brother, Mr. Bennie Covington of Detroit; and three grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Davenport-Harris in Birmingham.

Davenport-Harris is in charge of arrangements. Sharpe Funeral Home provided local information.

Mrs. Annie C. Bryan

BURLINGTON - Mrs. Annie Combs Bryan, 89, of Alamance Skilled Nursing Division, formerly of Chapel Hill Road, died at 9:15 a.m. Monday, April 27, 1998, at her home after several years of failing health.

A native of Wilkes County, she was the wife of the late Mr. William B. Bryan, and the daughter of Mr. Arthur L. Combs Sr. and Mrs. Annie Beatrice Prevette Combs, both deceased. She was a retired registered nurse at Memorial Hospital of Alamance. She was a member of Macedonia Lutheran Church.

Survivors include a son, Mr. John C. Bryan of Burlington; and two grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Ms. Ann Jarman Bryan.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Alamance Memorial Park by the Rev. John Earp, pastor of Macedonia Lutheran Church.

The family will be at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 9 to 10:30 Wednesday morning, and at other times at the home of the son, 2515 Lacy Holt Road, Graham.

Mr. Clarence Squires Jr.

MEBANE - Mr. Clarence Everett Squires Jr., 82, of 5720 West 10 Road, died at 10:30 a.m. Monday, April 27, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after a sudden illness.

Born Nov. 29, 1915, in Orange County, he was the husband of Mrs. Louise McAlister Squires, who survives, and the son of Mr. Clarence Everett Squires Sr. and Mrs. Eula Sykes Squires, both deceased. He was a retired employee of AT&T. He was a member of Andrews Memorial Baptist Church of Graham.

Survivors other than his wife of the home include two daughters, Mrs. Sharron Farrell of Burlington and Mrs. Debbie Somers of Elon College; a brother, Mr. David Squires of Mebane; a sister, Mrs. Dorothy Lewis of Tucson, Ariz.; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Mr. Larry Squires.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Andrews Memorial Baptist Church in Graham by Dr. Tommy Willis and the Rev. Tom Worley. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.

The family will be at McClure Funeral Home in Mebane from 7 to 9 this evening, and at other times at the home of Mrs. Sharron Farrell, 120 Shannon Drive, Burlington, and at the home.

Mrs. Majorie W. Ayers

HURDLE MILLS - Mrs. Majorie Woody Ayers, 73, of Hurdle Mills, died Sunday, April 26, 1998, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham.

Born March 20, 1925, in Person County, she was the wife of Mr. James Marion Ayers, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. John Clyde Woody and Mrs. Emma Walker Woody, both deceased. She was retired from Western Electric and was a member of Providence Baptist Church.

Survivors other than her husband of Hurdle Mills include two sons, Mr. Walter Woody Harris of Greensboro and Mr. John E. Harris Jr. of Burlington; two daughters, Ms. Dianne Harris Perry of Atlanta and Ms. Gail Harris Funk of Durham; a brother, Mr. James Woody of Roxboro; three sisters, Ms. Mary Florence Black of Burlington, Ms. Odelia Cozart of Knoxville, Tenn., and Ms. Zale Morrow of Roxboro; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Mr. Martin Ladd Harris; and two brothers, Mr. John Woody Jr. and Mr. Henry Woody.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Brooks and White Funeral Home in Roxboro by the Rev. Alfred Snipes, the Rev. Stuart Tucker and the Rev. Jack Ruth. Burial will be in Burchwood Cemetery.

The family will be at Brooks and White Funeral Home from 7 to 8:30 this evening.

Mr. William R. Tew

ELON COLLEGE - Mr. William Roscus Tew, 92, of 1839 Powerline Road, died at 8:46 a.m. Monday, April 27, 1998, at Alamance Health Care Center in Burlington after three years of failing health, three weeks critical.

A native of Sampson County, he was the husband of the late Mrs. Una Williams Tew, and the son of Mr. Robert Cephus Tew and Mrs. Ida Lewis Tew, both deceased. He was retired from Baker Cammack Hosiery Mill. He was a member of Trinity Worship Center, where he had served on the Board of Deacons and the Board of Trustees. He also served as an usher and was past president of the Bible Sunday School Class.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Clarice Phillips of Burlington; a son, Mr. William Leland Tew of Holly Hill, Fla.; two brothers, Mr. Payton Tew of Tarboro and Mr. Talmon Tew of Manchester, N.H.; four grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and six great-great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Trinity Worship Center by the Rev. Darrell Cox, pastor, and the Rev. Tommy McGee. Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery.

The family will be at McClure Funeral Home in Graham from 6 to 8 this evening, and at other times at the home.

Mr. Wallace Hurlocker

BURLINGTON - Mr. Wallace Michael 'Mike' Hurlocker, 41, of 2912 Hickory Hill Road, died at 12:05 a.m. Monday, April 27, 1998, at the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Durham after a short illness.

A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Reba Tuttle Hurlocker, who survives, and the son of Mrs. Shirley Norris Hurlocker, who survives, and the late Mr. Wallace R. Hurlocker. He was an independent truck driver and a U.S. Navy veteran. He was a member of Bellemont United Methodist Church.

Survivors other than his wife of the home and mother of Graham include a daughter, Abigail Hurlocker of the home; a sister, Miss Tonya Hurlocker of Graham; and a brother, Mr. Richard Hurlocker of Graham.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Bellemont United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jeff Roberts. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.

The family will be at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 7 to 9 Wednesday evening and at other times at the home.

Mrs. Vickie F. Boggs

HAW RIVER - Mrs. Vickie Frank Boggs, 49, of 618 Roxboro St., died Monday, April 27, 1998, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham after a critical illness of two months.

A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of Mr. Billy Wayne Boggs Sr., who survives, and the daughter of Mrs. Colleen Buckner Sykes, who survives, and the late Mr. John Wesley Frank Jr. A graduate of Williams High School, she received an undergraduate and master's degree at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.

She taught fourth grade at Harvey R. Newlin Elementary School for four years, where she also served as the technology resource coordinator, spelling bee coordinator, and peer mediation coordinator. She formerly taught at Broadview Middle School for 21 years. She served on the American Education Week, Science Fair and the N.C. Heritage Week Committees at Harvey R. Newlin Elementary school.

She was the Women's Missionary Union Director of Mount Zion Baptist Association for 11/2 years and assistant director for five years. She was a volunteer worker at the Mount Zion Baptist Association Thrift Shop. She was a member of the First Baptist Church of Haw River, where she was a choir member, past Sunday school director and teacher, Mission Friends teacher, director of the Girls in Action, the leader of the children's sermon and director of Vacation Bible School Ministry.

Survivors other than her husband of the home and mother of Siler City include a daughter, Mrs. Teri Isley Mahon of Burlington; two sons, Mr. Matt Isley of Raleigh and Mr. Ryan Isley of the home; a brother, Mr. Jeffrey Frank of Raleigh; grandmother, Mrs. Ollie Buckner of Siler City; stepmother, Mrs. Sandra Frank of Burlington; stepfather, Mr. Jim Sykes of Siler City; stepsons, Mr. Billy Wayne Boggs Jr. of Garner and Mr. Donald Paul Boggs of Burlington; five stepsisters; one stepbrother; four grandchildren; and seven step grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at First Baptist Church of Haw River by the Rev. Richard Poindexter, the Rev. Walter Jones Jr., the Rev. Roger Dale Boggs and the Rev. Larry Thompson. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.

The family will be at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 7 to 9 this evening, and at other times at the home.

Mr. Edward Lamoreaux

BURLINGTON - Mr. Edward Plenn 'Blackie' Lamoreaux, 70, of 1366 Haw River-Hopedale Road, died Monday, April 27, 1998, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill after an illness of two weeks.

A native of Jay, Fla., he was the husband of Mrs. Frances Marie Moore Lamoreaux, who survives, and the son of Mr. Leo Lamoreaux and Mrs. Audie Jeanette Jackson Lamoreaux Turner, both deceased. He owned and operated a small engine repair business for many years. He served in the Merchant Marine and the 82nd Airborne during World War II. He was a member of Alcoholics Anonymous, the Hut Group, for many years.

Survivors other than his wife of the home include two daughters, Ms. Anna Lamoreaux of the home and Mrs. Leonard (Betty) Farrar of Burlington; five sons, Mr. Tommy Lamoreaux of Graham, Mr. Everett Lamoreaux and Mr. Richard Lamoreaux, both of Mebane, Mr. Freddie Lamoreaux of Elon College and Mr. Johnny Lamoreaux of Creedmore; a sister, Mrs. Mary Sue Medlock of Milton, Fla.; two brothers, Mr. Tom Turner of Pensacola, Fla., and Mr. O'Neil Turner of Tallahassee, Fla.; 14 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a stepfather, Mr. Fred Turner; and two sisters, Ms. Margaret Wall and Ms. Sybil Turner.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Lowe Funeral Home by the Rev. David Jackson, pastor of Bethel Baptist Church in Graham. Burial will be in Longs Chapel United Church of Christ cemetery.

The family will be at Lowe Funeral Home from 7 to 9 this evening, and at other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to the local chapter of Alcoholics Anonymous, the Hut Group.
