Mrs. Marylou Dessie York Childress
SAXAPAHAW - Mrs. Marylou Dessie York Childress, 87, of 5641 Church Road, died at 9:45 p.m. Sunday, May 7, 2000, at Alamance Health Care Center after several years of failing health, one week critical.
A native of Randolph County, she was the wife of the late Mr. William Harry Childress and the daughter of Mr. Nathan Broughton York and Mrs. Emma Jeanette Pugh York, both deceased. She was retired from Sellars Manufacturing and was a homemaker.
Surivovrs include a daughter, Mrs. Ruby Hopkins of Asheboro; a son, Mr. Larry Childress of the home; nine grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at McClure Funeral Home Chapel in Graham by the Rev. Troy Wilheim. Burial will be in Moores Chapel cemetery.
The family will be at McClure Funeral Home in Graham from 7 to 9 this evening, and at other times at the home.

Mrs. Lessie Odell Solomon Terrell
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Lessie Odell Solomon Terrell, 71, of 702 Lakeside Apt. 6-H, died Sunday, May 7, 2000, at the Skilled Nursing Division of Alamance Regional Medical Center after several years of failing health, three months critical.
A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Arna Oscar Terrell and the daughter of Mr. Joe Lambeth Solomon and Mrs. Lillie Overby Solomon, both deceased. She was a homemaker and of the Holiness faith.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Archie (Julia) Cordle of Elon College; two foster sons, Mr. L.B. Parrish and Mr. Frank Parrish, both of Mebane; four sisters, Mrs. Lillian Richmond of McLeansville, and Mrs. Edna Craven, Mrs. Lena Massey and Mrs. Dessie Duggins, all of Burlington; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Mr. Alvies Terrell; two sisters, Ms. Surfonia Parrish and Ms. Rosie Byrd; a brother, Mr. Elmo Solomon; and a grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Odell McBride, pastor of True Life Church of God, and the Rev. Bennie Smith, pastor of Staley Memorial Baptist Church. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.
The family will be at Lowe Funeral Home from 7 to 9 this evening, and at other times at the home of the daughter, 3404 Osceola Road, Elon College.

Mrs. Essie Leach Paris
GRAHAM - Mrs. Essie Leach Paris, 80, of 5473-A Swepsonville-Saxapahaw Road, died at 11:20 a.m. Monday, May 8, 2000, at her home after two years of failing health, one week critical.
A native of Greenville, S.C., she was the wife of Mr. Jack Paris, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. Carl Morgan Leach and Mrs. Beulah Nelson Leach, both deceased. She was retired from Haw River Remnant Shop and was a member of Salem United Methodist Church.
Survivors other than her husband of the home include a daughter, Mrs. Bennie Paris Smith of Atlanta; two sons, Mr. George Paris of Mebane and Mr. Nelson Paris of Graham; five sisters, Mrs. Grace Goss of Burlington, Mrs. Faye Cooley of Easly, S.C., Mrs. Jessie Solomon of Chambersburg, Pa., Mrs. Lois Ryan of Winston-Salem, Mrs. Betty Wicker of Asheboro; a brother, Mr. Donald Ray Leach of Burlington; four grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Ruby Randolph; and a brother, Mr. Edgar Leach.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Salem United Methodist Church by the Rev. Benji Kelly and the Rev. Sam Martin III. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be at McClure Funeral Home in Graham from 6 to 8 Wednesday evening.

Mr. Lawrence Basal Jones
BURLINGTON - Mr. Lawrence Basal “L.B.” Jones, 77, of 4842 Friendship-Patterson Mill Road, died at 11:50 p.m. Sunday, May 7, 2000, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill after one year of failing health, 11 days critical.
A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Madeline Moser Jones, who survives, and the son of Mr. Lawrence Jones and Mrs. Matilda B. “Tillie” Jones Thaxton, both deceased. He was owner and operator of 12-24 Manufacturing Co. He, his father and his brother formerly operated the Red Star Service Station in Burlington and formerly worked with Jefferson Standard Life Insurance Co. A graduate of Burlington High School and Burlington Business College, he was a former member of the Civil Air Patrol and a U.S. Navy veteran. He was a member of Friendship United Methodist Church.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include two daughters, Ms. Terry E. Jones and Mrs. Neta J. Davis, both of Burlington; a son, Mr. Lawrence Basal “B.B.” Jones Jr. of Burlington; and four grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Mr. O.T. Jones.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Rich and Thompson Chapel in Burlington by the Rev. R.E.L. Moser, retired Methodist minister. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.
The family will be at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 6 to 8 Wednesday evening, and at other times at the home of Mrs. Terry Jones, 3542-A Dr. Pickett Road, Burlington.

Mrs. Emma Huffman Moser
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Emma Huffman Moser, 84, of 3287 N.C. 62 East, died at 7:20 a.m. Sunday, May 7, 2000, at Alamance Health Care Center.
A native of Guilford County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Herbert Glenn Moser and the daughter of Mr. Alvis Julian Huffman and Mrs. Willie Sue Pentecost Huffman, both deceased. She was a lifelong member of Low’s Lutheran Church and a member of the Dorcas Circle.
Survivors include five daughters, Mrs. Martha M. Shoffner of Julian, Mrs. Betty M. Caviness of Mebane, Mrs. Gale M. Schenck of China Grove, and Mrs. Beverly M. Sizemore and Mrs. Jane M. Bullard, both of Liberty; a son, Mr. Calvin V. Moser of Liberty; five sisters, Mrs. Margaret H. Williams of Burlington, Mrs. Mae H. Shipley of Asheville, Mrs. Irene H. Harwood of Candler, Mrs. Alice H. Allen of Central, S.C., and Mrs. Louise Shreckengast of Dover, Del.; 19 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by four sisters, Mrs. Katie H. Huffman, Mrs. Annie H. Rudd, Mrs. Lucy H. Greeson and Mrs. Jeanette H. Edwards; and three brothers, Mr. Kestel Huffman, Mr. Joel Huffman and Mr. Richard Huffman.
The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. today at Low’s Lutheran Church by the Rev. Brian Ballard. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be at the home.
Memorials may be made to the Emma Huffman Moser Memorial Fund, c/o Low’s Lutheran Church, 2136 N.C. 61, Liberty, N.C. 27298.

Mrs. Eva Loraine Smith
GRAHAM - Mrs. Eva Loraine Smith, 80, of 6648 Bass Mountain Road, Snow Camp, died at 5:58 a.m. Monday, May 8, 2000, at Sunbridge Care of Siler City after seven years of failing health.
A native of Caswell County, she was the daughter of Mr. Respuss Smith and Mrs. Ollie Smith, both deceased.
Survivors include a son, Mr. Earl Smith of Snow Camp; two sisters, Mrs. Frances Barrett of Saxapahaw and Mrs. Jessie L. Page of Burlington; two brothers, Mr. Vernon Smith of Mebane and Mr. Hubert Smith of Gibsonville; one grandchild; and two great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Sadie Smith; and a brother, Mr. Tal Smith.
The funeral will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at McClure Funeral Chapel in Graham by Pastor Randy Majors. Burial will be in Graham Memorial Park.
The family will be at McClure Funeral Home from 6 to 8 this evening, and at other times at the home of the son, 6648 Bass Mountain Road, Snow Camp.

Mr. John W. Strouth
BURLINGTON - Mr. John W. Strouth, 96, of 1987 Hilton Road, died Sunday, May 7, 2000, at Alamance Health Care after several years of failing health.
A native of Giles County, Va., he was the husband of the late Mrs. Mary Hardy Strouth and the son of Mr. Pearl Chapman Strouth and Mrs. Minnie Lake Strouth, both deceased. He was a retired employee of Travora Mills and was a member of New Hope Baptist Church.
Survivors include six daughters, Mrs. Margaret Hutchins of Downy, Calif., Mrs. Peggy Tolbert of Bunn Level, Mrs. Earlene Lee of Clinton, Mrs. Janice Wall, Ms. Doris A. Strouth and Mrs. Goldie Murphy, all of Burlington; four sons, Mr. Gene Strouth of Sierra Vista, Ariz., Mr. Adrian Strouth of Raleigh, Mr. Curtis Strouth of Clinton, Mr. Malcum “Johnny” Strouth of Burlington; a sister, Mrs. Marie Jarnell of Blacksburg, Va.; a brother, Mr. Eugene Strouth of Akron, Ohio; 51 grandchildren; 90 great-grandchildren; and 28 great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by three sons, Mr. Alvin Howard Strouth, Mr. Ervin Rogers Strouth, Mr. Louie Leonard Strouth; and three daughters, Ms. Marie Helen Fasciola, Ms. Lillian Evelyn Tolbert and Mrs. Hattie Thelma Strouth.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Randy Hobbs, pastor of New Hope Baptist Church, and the Rev. Ken Simpson, pastor of Fellowship Baptist Church. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.
The family will be at the home of Mrs. Janice Wall, 1713 Lower Hopedale Road, Burlington.

Mr. Robert Evans Ashmore
AIKEN, S.C. - Mr. Robert Evans Ashmore, 85, of 107 Interlachen Court, died Thursday, May 4, 2000, at Aiken Regional Medical Centers.
A native of Batesburg, S.C., he was the husband of Mrs. Dorothy Barfield Ashmore, who survives, and the son of Mr. William Thomas Ashmore and Mrs. Carrie Glenn Ashmore, both deceased. He was a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II. He was the retired vice president of Reigel Textile and was a member of First Presbyterian Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Ms. Carole Ann Martin of Burlington and Ms. Elizabeth Jean Veltri of Jacksonville, Fla.; a brother, Mr. Walter Glenn Ashmore of Macon, Ga.; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
The funeral was conducted Monday at First Presbyterian Church by Dr. William R. Johnston, the Rev. Jonathan Van Deventer and the Rev. Martha Ebel. Honorary pallbearers were the Fifty Plus Club, Sunrise Rotary. He was buried in Magnolia Gardens in Augusta, Ga.
Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 224 Barnwell Ave., Aikin, S.C., 29802; or to the American Cancer Society, P.O. Box K, Aiken, S.C., 29802.
Mrs. Gloria T. Thomas
BURLINGTON - Mrs. Gloria T. Thomas, 85, of 1227 Viewcrest Court, died Sunday, May 7, 2000, at Hillhaven of Chapel Hill after an illness of several months.
A native of Burlington, she was the wife of Dr. Stephen B. Thomas Sr., who died Dec. 17, 1999, and the daughter of Mr. Samuel B. Thomas and Mrs. Belle Sellars Thomas, both deceased. She was a graduate of N.C. Central University in Durham and before retirement, she was secretary at the former Thomas Sheet Metal Co., and the former Brown Sheet Metal Co. She was a member of First Baptist Church on Apple Street, and was organist for the Junior Choir for many years and a member of Missionary Circle No. 3, the Ladies’ Bible Class No. 2 of the Sunday school. For a number of years, she was organist for The Chancel Choir of St. Matthew’s AME Church. She was a member of the Ladies’ Auxiliary of the Old North State Dental Society.
Survivors include a son, Mr. Stephen B. Thomas Jr. of Burlington; and two grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church by Dr. Richard W. Styles Sr., pastor. Burial will be in North Lawn Cemetery.
Viewing will be at Hargett and Bryant Funeral Home from 1 to 9 p.m. today.

Mrs. Annie Dare Sharpe Chriscoe
MEBANE - Mrs. Annie Dare Sharpe Chriscoe, 78, of Presbyterian Home of Hawfields, died at 3:05 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000, at Alamance Regional Medical Center.
A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Alton Harrison Chriscoe and the daughter of Mr. Porter A. Sharpe and Mrs. Alma Shoffner Sharpe, both deceased. She was a member of Beacon Baptist Church.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Jack (Ann) Marley of Mebane; two sons, Mr. Howard Chriscoe and Mr. Roger Chriscoe, both of Burlington; a sister, Mrs. Myrtle Hudson of Burlington; a brother, Leroy Sharpe of Burlington; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a son, Mr. Jerry Chriscoe; sister, Mrs. Mable Coble; and four brothers, Mr. Bynum Sharpe, Mr. Clayton Sharpe, Mr. Richard Sharpe and Mr. Garman Sharpe.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Rich and Thompson Chapel in Burlington by the Rev. Greg Barkman, pastor of Beacon Baptist Church. Burial will be in Lowe’s Lutheran Church cemetery.
The family will be at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 6 to 8 this evening, and at other times at the home of Mr. Howard Chriscoe, 3613 Beaver Creek Road, Burlington, or at the home of the daughter, 2140 Stone Brook, Mebane.
Memorials may be made to the Presbyterian Home of Hawfields, 2502 N.C. 119 South, Mebane, N.C. 27302.

Mrs. Elida Garrison Patterson
ELON COLLEGE - Mrs. Elida Garrison Patterson, 92, of 3490 Ed Patterson Road, died at 1:10 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after two months of failing health, one week critical.
A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Edgar Marion Patterson and the daughter of Mr. Lindsay Garrison and Mrs. Nannie Lea Carey Garrison, both deceased. She was a homemaker. She was a member of Bethlehem Christian Church where she was a member of the Cassie Crutchfield Circle, the Share and Care Club and the Ever Ready Sunday school class.
Survivors include three sons, Mr. Clark Patterson of Burlington, Mr. Gordon Patterson of Gibsonville and Mr. Marvin Patterson of Elon College; two sisters, Mrs. Doc (Elizabeth) Coleman and Mrs. Edgar (Louise) Sutton, both of Burlington; two brothers, Mr. Herbert Garrison of Burlington and Mr. Billy Garrison of Elon College; six grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; three great-step grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by two daughters, Miss Doris Patterson and Miss Iris Patterson; a sister, Mrs. Mary Lea Barker; and three brothers, Mr. Clyde Garrison, Mr. Murray Garrison and Mr. Leon Garrison.
The funeral will be conducted at 4 p.m. Saturday at Bethlehem Christian Church by the Rev. Dave Gilbert, pastor. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be at Lowe Funeral Home from 6 to 8 this evening, and at other times at the home.
