Mr. Edward Green Covington Sr.
GREENSBORO - Mr. Edward Green Covington Sr., 75, of 1107-F Birchcrest Drive, died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital.
A native of Caswell County, he was the husband of Mrs. Ruth Scoggins Covington, who survives, and the son of Mr. Henry Spencer Covington Sr. and Mrs. Mary Smith Covington, both deceased. He was retired from the U.S. Postal Service and was a member of Prince of Peace Lutheran Church.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include three sons, Mr. Edward Green Covington Jr. of Pleasant Garden, Mr. John Steven Covington of Chesapeake, Va., and Mr. Joseph Fabin Covington of Elon College; a daughter, Ms. Lane Covington Ruehle of High Point; a sister, Ms. Peggy Covington Foushee of Aberdeen; a brother, Mr. Henry Spencer Covington of Bradenton, Fla.; eight grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church. Burial will be in Guilford Memorial Park.
The family will be at Forbis and Dick North Elm Street Chapel from 7 to 9 this evening.

Mrs. Viola Upchurch Gantt
GRAHAM - Mrs. Viola Upchurch Gantt, 78, of 738 Oakgrove Drive, died at 1:15 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000, at her home after six months of failing health.
A native of Franklin County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Horace W. Gantt and the daughter of Mr. Roman Upchurch and Mrs. Bertha Medlin Upchurch, both deceased. She was retired from Kayser Roth Corp., and was a Baptist.
Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Sherry Gantt Boggs of Haw River, Mrs. Sandra Gantt Gazikas of Knoxville, Tenn., and Ms. Susie Gantt of Burlington; a son, Mr. Stanley William Gantt of Charlotte; a brother, Mr. Lucious Upchurch of Durham; five grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by a son, Mr. Steven M. Gantt.
A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Graham Memorial Park.
The family will be at Rich and Thompson Funeral Home in Graham from 6 to 7 this evening, and at other times at the home.

Mr. Joseph Harold Jarrell
COLERIDGE - Mr. Joseph Harold Jarrell, 76, of 3921 Riverside Road, died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000, at his home.
A native of Randolph County, he was the husband of Mrs. Kathleen Harris Jarrell, who survives, and the late Mrs. Dorothy McNeill Jarrell. He was the son of Mr. Joseph Roby Jarrell and Mrs. Lillian Burns Jarrell, both deceased. He was retired from J.H. Allen and was a member of Deep River Baptist Church were he served as a deacon and Sunday school teacher.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include three sons, Mr. Jerry Wayne Jarrell of Burlington, Mr. Jack Jarrell and Mr. Jeff Jarrell, both of Coleridge; a stepdaughter, Ms. Edith Patterson of Clayton, Australia; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and two step grandchildren.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Deep River Baptist Church by the Rev. Bob Boyd and the Rev. Michael Karns. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be at Loflin Funeral Home in Ramseur from 7 to 9 this evening, and at other times at the home.
Memorials may be made to Deep River Baptist Church, 4095 Deep River Church Road, Ramseur, N.C. 27316; or to Hospice of Randolph County, P.O. Box 9, Asheboro, N.C. 27204.

Mr. Donald Duane Jones
HAW RIVER - Mr. Donald Duane “Donnie” Jones, 38, of 3660 Doe Lane, died Wednesday, Feb. 23, 2000, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after a sudden illness.
A native of Wichita, Kansas, he was the husband of Mrs. Wendy Perry Jones, who survives, and the son of Mr. and Mrs. Jerry Edward Young, who both survive, and the stepson. He was the owner and operator of Carolina Auto Center in Graham and was a member of Johnson Baptist Church in Browns Summit. He was the owner of car No. 16, which raced last year at Ace Speedway and will race as car No. 59 this year.
Survivors other than his wife of the home and parents of Gibsonville include two daughters, Miss Kelsey Nichole Jones of the home and Miss Brittany Morgan Jones of Greensboro; a sister, Mrs. Debra Denise Jones Johnson of Jacksonville, Fla.; three brothers, Mr. Timothy Edward Young of Altamahaw, Mr. William Floyd Young of Burlington and Mr. Gerald Keith Young of Gibsonville.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at New Hope Baptist Church by the Rev. Randy Hobbs and the Rev. Terry Moody. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.
The family will be at McClure Funeral Home in Graham from 7 to 9 this evening, at other times at the home and at the home of the mother, 616 Ellen Drive, Gibsonville.

Mr. Hollis Bigelow
YANCEYVILLE - Mr. Hollis Bigelow of 287 North Ave., died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000, at his home.
Born Oct. 14, 1918, in Caswell County, he was the husband of the late Mrs. Mary Fuller Bigelow and the son of Mr. Ullysses Grant Bigelow and Mrs. Hattie Graves Bigelow, both deceased. He was a retired long distance truck driver and a U.S. Navy veteran. He was a member of Graves Chapel Baptist Church
Survivors include three sons, Mr. Ervin Bigelow of Yanceyville, Mr. Hollis Rice Bigelow of Burlington and Mr. Kenneth Bigelow of Winston-Salem; four daughters, Mrs. Clarice Poole and Mrs. Judy Corbett, both of Yanceyville, Mrs. Margaret Mitchell of Burlington and Mrs. Janet Royal of Greensboro; 15 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a son, Mr. Willard Bigelow.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Graves Chapel Baptist Church by the Rev. Kenneth Walker. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be at Fulton Funeral Home from 7 to 8 this evening, and at other times at the home.

Mr. Arlie Arnold Beckom
BURLINGTON - Mr. Arlie Arnold Beckom, 67, died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000, at the Veterans Administration Medical Center in Durham after several months of failing health.
A native of Guilford County, he was the husband of Mrs. Barbara Manly Beckom, who survives, and the son of Mr. Marvin A. Beckom and Mrs. Alma Craven Beckom, both deceased. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War and was a member of the Disabled American Veterans of Burlington, the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Burlington, American Legion Post 63 of Burlington. He was a member of Davis Street United Methodist Church.
Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Annette B. Ray and Mrs. Gwendolyn B. Jeffries, both of Burlington; a sister, Mrs. Mara-Etta Davis of Burlington; a brother, Mr. Billy Beckom of Cisco, Texas; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Betty Lou Beckom Overman.
A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Dr. Michael Hobbs, pastor of Davis Street United Methodist Church.
There will be no visitation.
The family will be at the home of Mrs. Gwendolyn Jeffries, 3241 N.C. 49 North, Burlington.

Mr. Gurley Dameron Barnhardt Jr.
STAUNTON, Va. - Mr. Gurley Dameron “Pops” Barnhardt Jr., 79, of 205 Skyland Drive, died at 9 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 16, 2000.
Born July 26, 1920, in Burlington, he was the son of Mr. Gurley D. Barnhardt Sr. and Mrs. Lillie Wagoner Barnhardt, both deceased. He lived with his daughter for the past 17 years. He graduated from Elon College High School and served four years as a cook with the U.S. Navy. He was employed as a civilian in the food service business for 28 years. He was a member of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Burlington.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Peter (Gail) Kouchinsky of Staunton; a stepdaughter, Ms. Sandra Schiffley of Greensboro; two sisters, Ms. Amy Louise Forbis of Burlington and Ms. Nancy Pearl Allen of Raleigh; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
A private family service will be conducted in North Carolina.
The family will be at the home of the sister, Ms. Amy “Betty Lou” Forbis, 4247 Brick Church Road, Burlington, from 1 to 4 Saturday afternoon.
Memorials may be made to the AHC Hospice of the Shenandoah, P.O. Box 215, Fishersville, Va. 22939.
Henry Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Ms. Mary Holman Bond
EFLAND - Mr. Mary Holman Bond, 79, died Tuesday, Feb. 22, 2000, at the home of her daughter.
She was the daughter of Mr. Alvis Holman and Mrs. Luza Tate Holman, both deceased. She moved to Baltimore at an early age and worked with Pilot Motel. After retiring, she moved back to Orange County.
Survivors include a daughter, Ms. Constance G. Mebane; three brothers, Mr. Leroy Holman and Mr. Herwearl Holman, both of Boston, and Mr. Herman Holman of Durham; six sisters, Ms. Lena McAdoo and Ms. Arzelia McAdoo, both of Efland, Ms. Amelia Bumpass of Boston, Ms. Viola Morrow of Mebane and Ms. Iola Charles and Ms. Maggie Loftin, both of Durham; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Gaines Chapel AME Church by the Rev. Charles Blalock. Burial will be in Gaines Memorial Garden.
The family will be at the church from 7 to 8 Saturday evening.
Chavis-Parker Funeral Home in Hillsborough is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Martha Blackwell Gwynn
REIDSVILLE - Mrs. Martha Blackwell Gwynn, 54, of 2128 Stoney Creek School Road, died Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro.

Mrs. Edith Faye Bivens Wiles
SNOW CAMP - Mrs. Edith Faye Bivens Wiles, 61, of 5673 Mountain Trail, died at 10:40 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 24, 2000, at her home after seven years of failing health.
McClure Funeral Home in Mebane is in charge of arrangements, which are incomplete at this time.

Mr. Hurley Whitesell
WHITSETT - Mr. Hurley Whitesell, 84, of 553 N.C. 100, died Tuesday, Nov. 24, 1998, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro after a long illness.
A native of Gibsonville, he was the husband for 59 years of Mrs. Thelma Chrismon Whitesell, who survives, and the son of Mr. Walter Whitesell and Mrs. Mary Michael Whitesell, both deceased. He was a veteran of World War II and was retired from Hodgin Construction. He was a member of Apple’s Chapel Christian Church, where he was an active trustee and a member of the Men’s Adult Sunday School Class.
Survivors other than his wife of the home include a daughter, Mrs. Dwane (Linda Whitesell) Goodman of Gibsonville; a son, Mr. Jimmie Whitesell of McLeansville; a sister, Ms. Bertha Whitesell Stewart of Greensboro; four grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Ms. Nettie Cook and Ms. Una Heath; and two brothers, Mr. Vance Whitesell and Mr. Eugene Whitesell.
The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Apple’s Chapel Christian Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.
The family will be at Forbis and Dick North Elm Street Chapel from 7 to 9 Thursday evening, and at other times at the home.
