Mr. James H. Garrett

PALM BEACH GARDENS, Fla. - Mr. James Homer Garrett, 77, of Palm Beach Gardens, died Tuesday morning, Jan. 13, 1998, after a short illness.

Born Oct. 24, 1920, in Guilford County, he was the husband for 52 years of Mrs. Leona Rose Garrett, who survives, and the son of Mr. James Lee Garrett and Mrs. Ora Irene Ingold Garrett, both deceased. He lived in Liberty before moving to the Palm Beach area in 1958. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was employed for 20 years as a fuel specialist by Pratt & Whitney Aircraft, retiring in 1986. He was a member of the Old Dixie Volunteer Fire Department and of the State Fireman's Association. He was a member of Gardens Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Mike (Peggy Garrett) Osborne of Palm Beach Gardens; and two grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Rich and Thompson Chapel in Burlington. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.

The family will be at the mortuary from noon to 2 p.m. Saturday.

Mr. Wilbert Freeman

GREENSBORO - Mr. Wilbert Freeman, 75, of 160 Random Drive, died Tuesday, Jan. 13, 1998, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital.

A native of Guilford County, he was retired from Wysong and Miles Co. and was a Baptist.

Survivors include two daughters, Ms. Jean Freeman of Burlington and Ms. Rebecca Ann Meetze of Greensboro; two sons, Mr. James Farmer and Mr. Wilbert Donald Freeman, both of Greensboro; a brother, Mr. Kenneth Freeman of Greensboro; three sisters, Ms. Dorothy Ross of Pennsylvania, Ms. Mary Jenkins and Ms. Elaine Woods, both of Greensboro; 13 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Hanes-Lineberry Vanstory Chapel with burial in Westminster Gardens Cemetery.

The family will be at the funeral home from 7 to 9 Friday evening.

Rev. Needham Catlett

GREENSBORO - The Rev. Needham Arthur Catlett, 99, of Moses H. Cone Extended Care Center, 1131 N. Church St., Greensboro, formerly of Garner, died at 1:10 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 14, 1998, at his home.

Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington is in charge of arrangements which are incomplete.

Mrs. Lorena S. Loftis

BURLINGTON - Mrs. Lorena Smith Loftis, 85, of 2626 Durham St. Ext., died Monday morning, Jan. 12, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center.

A native of Caswell County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Leroy Loftis and the daughter of Mr. Jeff Smith and Mrs. Mary Sue Smith, both deceased. She was a homemaker and a member of Pleasant Grove Primitive Baptist Church.

Survivors include five daughters, Ms. Mary Lou Teague and Ms. Rachel Smith, both of Mebane, Ms. Helen Harrelson of Gibsonville, Ms. Vickie Rumley of Elon College and Ms. Brenda Handy of the home; three sons, Mr. Bobby Loftis of Gibsonville and Mr. Donald Loftis and Mr. Roy Roger Loftis, both of Burlington; a brother, Mr. Robert Smith of Reidsville; 26 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by two sons, Mr. Carlis Lee and Mr. Ronnie Gene Loftis, and a daughter, Ms. Violet Louis Tucker.

The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Pleasant Grove Primitive Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will be at Wilkerson Funeral Home in Reidsville from 7 to 9 this evening, and at other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to Pleasant Grove Primitive Baptist Church, cemetery Fund, c/o Elder Donald E. Smith, 1908 N.C. 62 North, Burlington, N.C. 27217.

Mr. Robert Warren Jr.

HILLSBOROUGH - Mr. Robert 'Bill' Franklin Warren Jr., 77, died Sunday, Jan. 11, 1998, at Chapel Hill Rehabilitation and Health Care Center after an illness of one year.

Born Feb. 16, 1920, in Durham County, he was the husband of Mrs. Helen Warren, who survives, and the son of Mr. Robert Warren and Mrs. Mary Warren, both deceased.

Survivors other than his wife include a son, Mr. Bob Warren; a brother, Mr. John Hassell Warren; a sister, Dr. Sarah Lou Warren; and two grandchildren.

A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Hillsborough United Methodist Church by the Rev. Herman Ward.

The family will be at 102 W. Queen St., Hillsborough.

Memorials may be made to Hillsborough United Methodist Church Memorial Fund, 130 W. Tryon St., Hillsborough, N.C. 27278.

The Cremation Society of the Carolinas Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Cecil E. Moser Sr.

GRAHAM - Mr. Cecil Edward Moser Sr., 85, of 609 N. Main St., died at 7:45 a.m. Monday, Jan. 12, 1998, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro after three months of failing health, two weeks critical.

A native of Alamance County, he was the husband for 67 years of Mrs. Doris Evans Moser, who survives. He was the son of Mr. Adolphus W. 'Dolph' Moser and Mrs. Cora Alice Andrews Moser, both deceased. He was a retired merchant. He was a charter member of the former Graham Exchange Club, formerly affiliated with the Thomas M. Holt Lodge Scottish Rite, the Oasis Shrine Temple, the Battle of Alamance Chapter No. 256, Order of the Eastern Star, former member of the Graham City Council, and was active for more than 50 years in the sports program at Graham High School. He was a 60-year member of Providence United Church of Christ, where he was a former deacon, former trustee, secretary-treasurer emeritus of the Providence Adult Bible Class and past president of the Providence Memorial Association.

Survivors other than his wife of the home include a daughter, Mrs. Mary Corette Moser Harrison of Virginia Beach, Va.; four sons, Mr. Cecil E. Moser Jr., Mr. K. Rex Moser and Mr. W. Keith Moser, all of Graham, and Mr. Gary O. Moser of Snow Camp; a sister, Miss Mary Catherine Moser of Graham; 12 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by four brothers, Mr. Darrell H. Moser, Mr. W.H. 'Jolly' Moser, Mr. Odell Moser, and Mr. W. Devoy Moser.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Providence United Church of Christ by the Rev. Darryl Peebles, pastor, and the Rev. William A. Rich. Burial will be in Providence Memorial Cemetery.

The family will be at Rich and Thompson Funeral Home in Graham from 6 to 8 this evening, and at other times at the home, or at the home of the sister, 615 N. Main St., Graham.

Mrs. Helen V. Mabe

RANDLEMAN - Mrs. Helen Baysinger Varner Mabe, 78, formerly of George York Road, died at 6:19 a.m. Monday, Jan. 12, 1998, at Skilled Nursing Division of Alamance Regional Medical Center.

A native of Rockingham County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Noah 'Jack' Varner and the late Mr. Carlos Mabe. She was a retired restaurant owner and operator.

Survivors include a son, Mr. Buzz Varner of Graham; a sister, Mrs. Adelle Fields of Randleman; two brothers, Mr. Huey Baysinger of Greensboro and Mr. Carl Baysinger of Canyon Lake, Calif.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mrs. Irene Roberts, and a son, Mr. Jackie Varner.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Bethany United Methodist Church by the Rev. Samuel Hinton, pastor, and the Rev. Tommy Love, pastor of Wicker Street Baptist Church. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will be at McClure Funeral Home in Graham from 7 to 9 this evening, and at other times at the home of the son, 200 E. Hanover Road, Graham.

Mrs. Mable H. Davis

BURLINGTON - Mrs. Mable Holt Davis of 5545 Mt. Hermon-Rock Creek Road, died at 12:38 p.m. Monday, Jan. 12, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center.

Mr. George M. Curtis

BURLINGTON - Mr. George Mack Curtis, 70, of 1950 Hanford Road died at 1:13 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 11, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center.

A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Mildred R. Curtis, who survives, and the son of Mr. Charles Roscoe Curtis and Mrs. Louise Wayne Curtis, both deceased. He was self employed at the Blouse House in Graham. He was a U.S. Marine Corps veteran of World War II and was a member of Mt. Hermon United Methodist Church.

Survivors other than the wife of the home include a son, Mr. Joseph Curtis of Haw River; four sisters, Mrs. Helen Duncan of Asheville, Mrs. Willie Barkhurst of Phoenix, Mrs. Mary Bell of Toast and Mrs. Edna Poole of Burlington; three brothers, Mr. Paul Curtis of Gibsonville and Mr. Hal Curtis and Mr. Charles Curtis, both of Burlington, and two grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at Mt. Hermon United Methodist Church by the Rev. Rick Moser, pastor. Burial will be in Gibsonville City Cemetery.

The family will be the home.

Memorials may be made to the Mt. Hermon United Methodist Church, 4178 Mt. Hermon-Rock Creek Road, Graham, N.C. 27253.

Mrs. Lois T. Coble

MEBANE - Mrs. Lois Florence Tripp Coble, 75, of 168 Woodlawn Road, died at 8:10 a.m. Monday, Jan. 12, 1998, at her home after one and a half years of failing health.

Born Oct. 14, 1922, in Alamance County, she was the wife for 42 years of Mr. Joseph F. Coble, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. Weaver Wilson Tripp and Mrs. Flora Bell Pendergrass Tripp, both deceased. She was a retired bookkeeper for McClouds Oil Company in Mebane and from Eddie's Typewriter Company in Burlington. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Mebane, where she was a Sunday school teacher and a member of the Women's Missionary Union.

Survivors other than her husband of the home include three brothers, Mr. Howard Tripp of Roxboro, Mr. James Tripp and Mr. Lester Tripp, both of Mebane.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Mr. W.W. Tripp Jr. and Mr. Harold Tripp.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Baptist Church in Mebane by Dr. Terry Farmer, pastor. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.

The family will be at McClure Funeral Home in Mebane from 6 to 8 this evening, and at other times at the home.

Mr. Robert G. Jones

MEBANE - Mr. Robert Garland 'Buck' Jones, 73, of 6516 Hebron Church Road, died Monday, Jan. 12, 1998, at Duke University Medical Center in Durham after several years of failing health, one week critical.

A native of Orange County, he was the husband of Mrs. Betty Webster Jones, and the son of Mr. Archie Vernon Jones and Mrs. Bessie McDade Jones, both deceased. He was a retired dairy farmer. He was a mason and a member of the Bingham Lodge No. 272 A.F.& A.M. He was a member of Hebron United Methodist Church.

Survivors other than his wife of the home include one son, Mr. Harry 'Mick' Poe of Mebane; a daughter, Ms. Sue Coller of Williamson, N.Y.; three stepdaughters; two stepsons; and a sister, Mrs. Annie Mae Jones Wilson of Tarboro.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Ms. Mary Elizabeth Poe, and a brother, Mr. McKee Jones.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Oakwood cemetery by the Rev. Jesse Staton, pastor. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery. Masonic graveside rites will follow.

The family will be at McClure Funeral Home in Mebane from 7 to 9 this evening, and at other times at the home.
