Mrs. Ruth Yarbrough

McLEANSVILLE - Mrs. Ruth Johnson Yarbrough, 85, of 107 Sprucetree Drive, died at 11:45 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 14, 1998.

A native of Highburger, Ala., she was the wife of the late Mr. John Allen Yarbrough and the daughter of Mr. Charles Lennon Johnson and Mrs. Annie Lee Johnson Johnson, both deceased. She was retired from Burlington Industries and was a Methodist.

Survivors include a daughter, Ms. Leigh Farr of Greensboro; three sisters, Ms. Elaine Beckom of Burlington, Ms. Norma Lee McMillan of Greensboro, Ala., and Ms. Jeannette Dodson of San Diego; and a grandchild.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Ms. Carole East.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Gray Clark. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.

The family will be at Lowe Funeral Home from 6 to 8 this evening, and at other times at the home.

Mrs. Mattie C. Walker

BURLINGTON - Mrs. Mattie Clapp Walker, 90, of 815 Wicker St., died at 11 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 15, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after five years of failing health and a critical illness of one day.

A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Joel Teed Walker, and the daughter of Mr. Wyatt A. Clapp and Mrs. Bessie Baulding Clapp, both deceased. She was retired cafeteria manager for the Burlington City Schools. She was a member of the First Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church where she was a member of Circle 2, the Young at Heart Club and the Elmira Senior Citizens.

Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Nancy Fogleman of Graham, Mrs. Linda Peele of Greenville, N.C., and Mrs. Clara Phillips of Burlington; two sons, Dr. Joel W. Walker of Graham and Mr. Harvey A. Walker of Greensboro; two sisters, Mrs. Lois Ingle of Burlington and Mrs. Pearl McLelland; 12 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by one sister, Ms. Frieda C. Wilson; two brothers, Mr. Fred Clapp and Mr. Clyde A. Clapp; and two grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at First Associate Reformed Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Tim Robinson, pastor, and the Rev. Rick Moser, pastor of Mt. Hermon United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.

The family will be the home.

Memorials may be made to the First Associate Reformed Church, 2250 Saddle Club Road, Burlington, N.C. 27215.

Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Evelyn Terrell

BURLINGTON - Mrs. Evelyn 'Pete' Terrell, 72 of 1824 N.C. 49 North, died at 1:30 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15, 1998, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill after a critical illness of four weeks.

A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of Mr. Jack H. Terrell, who died Jan. 28, 1998, and the daughter of Mr. Archie Maness and Mrs. Annie Keck Maness, both deceased. She was retired from the Mebane Shrubbery Market and was a member of the Eastern Star. She was a member of Haw River Christian Church, where she was a Sunday school teacher and was a deaconess for several years.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Gloria Terrell Realini of Graham; a sister, Miss Lois Maness of Burlington; two grandchildren; three step grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and one great-step grandchild.

She was preceded in death by a sister, Ms. Levania Martin.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Haw River Christian Church by the Rev. James L. Rosser, pastor. Burial will be in Longs Chapel Cemetery.

The family will be at McClure Funeral Home in Graham from 7 to 9 this evening, and at other times at the home.

Mrs. Reba J. Bell

BURLINGTON - Mrs. Reba Johnson Bell, 84, of South Church Street, died at 4:40 a.m. Monday, Feb. 16, 1998, at Alamance Health Care after a short illness.

A native of Durham, she was the wife of Mr. Raymond E. Bell Sr., who survives, and the daughter of Mr. Henry Grover Johnson and Mrs. Lucy Corneliouson Johnson Wilson, both deceased. Before their retirement, she and her husband operated Bell's on East Davis Street in Burlington for more than 50 years.

Survivors other than her husband of the home include four sons, Mr. Raymond E. 'Ray' Bell Jr. of Graham, Mr. Jim Bell and Mr. Charles Bell, both of Burlington, and Mr. Don Bell of Elon College; a sister, Mrs. Atherline Williams of Burlington; and four grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 4 p.m. Wednesday at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Dermont Reid, retired United Methodist minister. Burial will be in Pine Hill Cemetery.

The family will be at Lowe Funeral Home from 7 to 9 this evening.

Mrs. Mary M. Johnson

SANFORD - Mrs. Mary Velma Marley Johnson, 77, of 6101 Deep River Road, died Monday, Feb. 16, 1998, at Central Carolina Hospital.

A native of Randolph County, she was the wife of Mr. W. Henry Johnson, who survives. She was a member of the Jones Chapel United Methodist Church and the United Methodist Women.

Survivors other than her husband include two sons, Mr. Michael R. Johnson of Sanford and Mr. Phillip N. Johnson of Apex; a daughter, Ms. Faye Hearne of Garner; two brothers, Mr. Grover Marley of Liberty and Mr. Hubert Marley of Burlington; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m.. Wednesday at the Jones Chapel United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jack Hunter and the Rev. Everette Eason. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

The family will be at Bridges-Cameron Funeral Home from 6 to 8 this evening.

Memorials may be made to the Building Fund of Jones Chapel United Methodist Church.

Mr. Philip J. Amash

BURLINGTON - Mr. Philip Jiries Amash, 59, of 2410 Parrish St., died at 10:10 a.m. Sunday, Feb. 15, 1998, at Duke University Medical Center after a long illness.

A native of Palestine, Lydia, he was the husband of Mrs. Rima Aub Amash, who survives, and the son of Mr. Jiries Joseph Amash and Mrs. Regina Sydan Amash, both deceased. He was retired from Burlington Industries.

Survivors other than his wife of the home include a daughter, Mrs. Ruth Ann Edge of Burlington; two sisters, Miss Futon Amash of Grand Rapids, Mich., and Mrs. Muga Amash Salfiti of Hawthorn, Calif.; two brothers, Mr. Peter Amash of Costa Mesa, Calif., and Dr. Paul Amash of Cary; and three grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Rich and Thompson Chapel by the Rev. Bruce Readling. Burial will be in Magnolia Cemetery.

The family will be at Rich and Thompson Mortuary in Burlington from 7 to 9 Wednesday evening, and at other times at the home.

Mr. Bill Hughes

ASHEBORO - Mr. William Howard Hughes, 78, of the Friends Home in Greensboro, died Monday, Feb. 16, 1998, at his home.

A native of Randolph County, he was the husband of Mrs. Esther Beane Hughes, who died in 1968, and Mrs. Thelma McGill Hughes, who survives. He was an Army Air Force veteran of World War II. He was employed by the U.S. Postal Service for 40 years and was former Superintendent of Mails in the Asheboro office. He was a member of Asheboro Friends Meeting.

Survivors other than his wife include three daughters, Mrs. Larry (Billie) Parks of Mebane, Mrs. Donald (Jane) Wright of Trinity and Mrs. Jim (Sue) Memory of Greensboro; a stepson, Mr. David Carl Purcelle of Hickory; a stepdaughter, Mrs. Vance (Peggy) Trogdon of Randleman; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; four step grandchildren; and six great-step grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Asheboro Friends Meeting by the Rev. Robert L. Kidd. Burial will be in Oaklawn Cemetery.

The family will be at Pugh Funeral Home from 7 to 8:30 this evening.

Mr. Elmo L. Hawkins

MEBANE - Mr. Elmo Leroy Hawkins, 80, of 3648 Old Hillsborough Road, died at 10:45 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 15, 1998, at Alamance Health Care Center in Burlington after an illness of two years, one week critical.

A native of Person County, he was the husband of the late Mrs. Mary Roselle Clayton Hawkins, and the daughter of Mr. Otha Hawkins and Mrs. Bessie Bradsher Hawkins, both deceased. He was a retired employee of Western Electric Company and was a former member of the Sheriff's Auxiliary. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and was a member of the American Legion Post No. 95. He was a member of St. Andrews Episcopal Church.

Survivors include three daughters, Mrs. Cora H. Lee of Asheboro, Mrs. Sandra H. Lassiter of Mebane and Mrs. Judy H. Caulder of Haw River; two sisters, Mrs. Stella Lunsford and Mrs. Josephine Gentry, both of Hurdle Mills; six grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Andrews Episcopal church by the Rev. Sam Frazier. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.

The family will be at McClure Funeral Home in Mebane from 7 to 9 this evening, and at other times at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Curt Lassiter, 3648 Old Hillsbourgh Road, Mebane.

Memorials may be made to St. Andrews Episcopal Church, U.S. 70 East, Haw River, N.C. 27258.

Mr. Willis McLendon Sr.

BURLINGTON - Mr. Willis 'Mac' Treece McLendon Sr., 83, of 1616 Erwin Ave., died at 7:15 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 14, 1998, at his home after several years of failing health, two weeks critical.

A native of Montgomery County, he was the husband of the late Mrs. Vera Clark McLendon and the late Mrs. Alma Rogers McLendon, and the son of Mr. Charlie Rufus McLendon and Mrs. Lydia Frances 'Fannie' Crepps McLendon, both deceased. He was the retired owner and operator of McLendon's Welding shop for 35 years. He was a volunteer at Twin Lakes Center in Burlington, and a member of Grace United Methodist Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Bob (Sharon) Bason of Burlington; one son, Mr. Treece McLendon Jr. of Burlington; three sisters, Mrs. Minnie Lee Newton of Kemah, Texas, Mrs. Maggie Dennis of Albemarle and Mrs. Montie Loy of Burlington; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Earl Brewer; four brothers, Mr. L.H. McLendon, Mr. C. Ralph McLendon, Mr. Travis McLendon and Mr. Neil McLendon.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Lowe Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Carson Wiggins, pastor of Grace United Methodist Church. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.

The family will be at Lowe Funeral Home from 7 to 9 this evening, and at other times at the home.
