Mr.. Ivan H. Thompson

GRAHAM - Mr. Ivan Hammer 'Ikie' Thompson, 85, of 2502 N.C. 119 South, died at 2 a.m. Monday, Feb. 9, 1998, at the Presbyterian Home of Hawfields after several years of failing health.

A native of Snow Camp, he was the husband of Mrs. Jean Tate Thompson, who died Jan. 22, 1998, and the son of Mr. Calvin Hayes Thompson and Mrs. Mattie Stuart Thompson, both deceased. He retired from Green and McClure Furniture Company in 1977 and was the retired owner and operator of Country Crafts by Ike. He was a member of Graham Presbyterian Church, where he was a former elder and a member of the Brotherhood Class. He was a former member of the Graham Exchange Club.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. James Michael (Elaine) Drye of Mooresville; and two grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a daughter, Mrs. Barbara Jean Thompson Stroud; two sisters, Mrs. Flossie T. Moore and Mrs. Kathleen T. Whitehead; three brothers, Mr. Roy Thompson, Mr. Paul Thompson and Mr. Cecil Thompson.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Graham Presbyterian Church by Dr. William C. Weckerly and the Rev. Lou M. East.

The family will be at McClure Funeral Home in Graham from 6 to 8 this evening.

Memorials may be made to the Presbyterian Home of Hawfields, 2502 N.C. 119 South, Mebane, N.C. 27253; to Graham Presbyterian Church, Landscaping Fund, 216 W. Harden St., Graham, N.C. 27253; or to the Alzheimer's Disease Research Center (designated for Ivan H. Thompson), 2200 W. Main St., Suite A-230, Durham, N.C. 27705.

Mrs. Carol L. Hill

HAW RIVER - Mrs. Carol Love Hill, 67, of 760 Baker Drive died at 8:52 p.m. Saturday, Feb. 7, 1998, at home after 10 years of failing health and a critical illness of three weeks.

A Guilford County native, she was the wife of Mr. Phillip Lewis Hill, who survives, and the daughter of Mrs. Thelma Estelle Curtis Love, who survives, and the late Mr. Lacy Lee Love. She was a homemaker and a charter member of Bible Baptist Church.

Survivors other than her husband of the home and mother of Burlington include two sons, Mr. Scott Phillip Hill of the home and Mr. Mark Lewis Hill of Burlington and one grandchild.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Bible Baptist Church by Dr. Tommy Richardson, pastor. Burial will be in Graham Memorial Park.

The family be at other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to the Bible Baptist Church Building Fund or to Hospice of Alamance Caswell, P.O. Box 2122, Burlington, N.C. 27216-2122.

Mr. Joseph McAlpine

HAMDEN, Conn. - Mr. Joseph A. McAlpine of 850 Mix Ave., the Arden House, died Saturday, Feb. 7, 1998, at St. Raphael House, New Haven, Conn.

He was the husband of Mrs. Carrie Burnett McAlpine, who survives.

Survivors other than his wife of Burlington include a son, Mr. Spencer J. McAlpine of New Haven.

A memorial service will be conducted at noon Thursday at Bell Funeral Home, Chapel Street, in New Haven. Burial will be in Connecticut on Friday.

Mr. Carl E. Annas

GREENSBORO - Mr. Carl Erwin Annas, 80, of 3907 W. Friendly Ave., died Saturday, Feb. 7, 1998.

A native of Caldwell County, he attended Lenoir Rhyne College and served with the Navy during World War II. He was employed at Burlington Industries' Fayetteville Plant in 1945, and served in a number of plants, divisions and positions in the years since, including head of Burlington House Fabrics and manager of Lees Carpet Operations. He served as head of the company's Transportation Division from 1974 to 1982 when he retired. He was a member of Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church.

He was active in many community organizations and industrial associations. He was Exalted Ruler of the Elks Lodge in Rome, Ga., a member of the Coosa Valley Country Club in Rome, and a charter member of the Greensboro City Club and Starmount Country Club.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Bobbie Hughes Annas; two sons, Mr. Stephen K. Annas of Greensboro and Mr. Douglas Annas of Burlington; a stepdaughter, Ms. Bernadette 'Bunnie' Stevenson of Foster City, Calif.; three sisters, Mrs. Doris Fare of Granite Falls, Mrs. Mildred Kirby of Lenoir and Mrs. Nadine Stanley of Raleigh; seven grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

A memorial Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church with burial in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the residence after the service.

Memorials may be made to Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, 2205 W. Market St., Greensboro, N.C. 27403.

Mr. J.T. Zachary Jr.

ROSWELL, Ga. - Mr. J.T. 'Tom' Zachary Jr., principal of Roswell High School, died Feb. 6, 1998, in San Diego where he was attending a meeting of the National Association of Secondary School Principals.

A native of Graham, he was a graduate of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill where he played baseball on an athletic scholarship. He was a former principal in Florida and an employee of the Pinellas County School System in Florida for 30 years after teaching in North Carolina for four years. After retiring from Pinellas County, he became principal of Roswell High School. He was a member of Roswell Rotary Club and was a member of the Georgia and National Association of Secondary School Principals.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Lynda Parnell Zachary of Roswell; two daughters, Mrs. Teri Hernadez of Alpharetta, Ga., and Mrs. Jan Noyes of St. Petersburg; one sister, Mrs. Sally Harper of Alexandria, Va.; and four grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Roswell First United Methodist Church by Dr. Malone Dodson.

A graveside service will be conducted Thursday at 3 p.m. at Alamance Memorial Park by the Rev. Elizabeth T. Severance.

The family will be at Roswell Funeral Home this evening from 5 to 8:30 p.m.

Memorials may be made to Roswell United Methodist Church, Tom Zachary Memorial Scholarship Fund, c/o the church, 814 Mimosa Blvd., Roswell, Ga. 30075.

Mrs. Eula M. Shanklin

MEBANE - Mrs. Eula Mae Miller Shanklin, 87, of 5229 U.S. 70, died at 10:10 p.m. Sunday, Feb. 8, 1998, at Presbyterian Home of Hawfields after an illness of two years.

A native of Orange County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Fletcher Shanklin, and the daughter of Mr. John M. Miller and Mrs. Anna Smith Miller, both deceased. She was a retired employee of The May Apparel Group in Mebane, and a member of Lebanon United Methodist Church.

Survivors include one son, Mr. Marion Thomas Shanklin of Mebane; three grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at McClure Funeral Home Chapel in Mebane by the Rev. Marty Cauley, pastor of Lebanon United Methodist Church, and the Rev. Alan Ritter, pastor of North Graham Baptist Church. Burial will be in Lebanon United Methodist Church Cemetery.

The family will be at McClure Funeral Home in Mebane from 6 to 8 this evening and at other times at the home of the son, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Shanklin, 5223 U.S. 70, Mebane.

Mrs. Esther Roberts

BURLINGTON - Mrs. Esther LeDone 'Jerry' Roberts, 82, of 613 Woodhaven Drive, died Monday, Feb. 9, 1998, at Alamance Regional Medical Center.

Mr. Thomas Warner

BURLINGTON - Mr. Thomas Jefferson 'Tom' Warner, 88, of White Oak Manor, died at 1:15 p.m. Monday, Feb. 9, 1998, at home.

Mr. Carson Bennett Sr.

GREENSBORO - Mr. Carson Lee Bennett Sr., 64, died Friday, Feb. 6, 1998, at Duke University Medical Center after several months of failing health.

A native of Guilford County, he was the husband of the late Mrs. Jane Ellen Barger Bennett, and the son of Mr. Robert Bennett and Mrs. Thelma Carter Bennett, both deceased. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of the Korean War and was a member of the American Legion. He was a third degree Mason and a Shriner. He was Baptist.

Survivors include a son, Dr. Carson Lee Bennett II of Los Angeles; a brother, the Rev. Robert Bennett of Suffolk, Va.; and two sisters, Mrs. Inez Covert of Greensboro and Mrs. Irene Capps of Gibsonville.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Ms. Lucille Lewis; and three brothers, Mr. Joe Bennett, Mr. Garland Bennett and Mr. Alton Bennett.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Alamance Memorial Park by the Rev. Robert Bennett, retired United Church of Christ minister.

The family will be at Lowe Funeral Home from 7 to 9 this evening.

Memorials may be made to a charity of choice.

Mr. Lloyd Vincent

GRAHAM - Mr. Lloyd Vincent, 74, of 1959 Long Dairy Road, died at 4 a.m. Monday, Feb. 9, 1998, at UNC Hospitals in Chapel Hill after a brief illness.

A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Margaret Councilman Vincent, who survives, and the son of Mr. Turner Vincent and Mrs. Annie Stout Vincent, both deceased. He was retired from General Electric and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of Cornerstone Baptist Church.

Survivors other than his wife of the home include a daughter, Mrs. Sandra Cheek of Burlington; five sons, Mr. Roger Dale Vincent, Mr. Lloyd Vincent Jr., Mr. Stephen Vincent and Mr. Kenneth Wayne Vincent, all of Graham, and Mr. Cody Vincent of Burlington; four sisters, Mrs. Margie Foust of Burlington, Mrs. Alta Mae Pace of Snow Camp, and Mrs. Vera Tingen and Mrs. Verna Councilman, both of Graham; three brothers, Mr. J.W. Vincent and Mr. Turner Vincent Jr., both of Graham, and Mr. Harvey Vincent of Torrance, Calif.; 11 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at McClure Funeral Home Chapel in Graham by the Rev. Bill Skenes, pastor of Cornerstone Baptist Church. Burial will be in Graham Memorial Park.

The family will be at the funeral home from 6 to 8 this evening and at other times at the home.

Mrs. Betty R. Grubb

BURLINGTON - Mrs. Betty Sue Reavis Grubb, 65, of 4864 Smokey Hollow Road, Graham, died at 8:54 a.m. Monday, Feb. 9, 1998, at her home after two years of failing health.

A native of Surry County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Ford H. Grubb, and the daughter of Mr. Gurney M. Reavis and Mrs. Minnie J. Reavis, both deceased. She was retired from Tower Hosiery and was a Baptist.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Norma Jean Grubb Cook of the home; a son, Mr. James M. Roseman of Burlington; and two grandchildren.

The funeral will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at McClure Funeral Home Chapel in Burlington. Burial will be in Graham Memorial Park.

The family will be at McClure Funeral Home in Burlington from 7 to 9 Wednesday evening and at other times at the home.

Mr. Carlton Chandler

BLANCH - Mr. Gilbert Carlton Chandler, 72, of 203 Chandler Road, died Monday, Feb. 9, 1998, at his home after several months of failing health.

Born April 1, 1925, in Caswell County, he was the husband of Mrs. Ruby Lea Shelton Chandler, who survives, and the son of Mr. Clyde Thomas Chandler and Mrs. Linnie Myers Chandler, both deceased. He was a member of Prospect United Methodist Church, where he was the Sunday school secretary for more than 40 years. He was the secretary and treasurer for the board of directors of Caswell County Farm Bureau and was a former member of the Caswell County ASCS Board. He was a charter member of the Central Caswell Ruritan Club and was voted Ruritan of the Year for 1990. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, serving in Germany. He served as a magistrate for Caswell County.

Survivors other than his wife of the home include a daughter, Ms. Suzanne C. Yarbrough of Blanch; a son, Mr. Bill Chandler of Apex; a brother, Mr. Alvis Chandler of Blanch; and three grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Prospect United Methodist Church by Dr. Stanley Hare and the Rev. George Johnson. Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Members of the Central Caswell Ruritan Club will serve as honorary pallbearers.

The family will be at Hooper Funeral Home in Yanceyville from 7 to 8:30 this evening and at other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Alamance-Caswell, P.O. Box 2122, Burlington, N.C. 27216-2122.
