Mrs. Minnie Covington

BURLINGTON - Mrs. Minnie Corbett Covington, 94, of 1013 Apple St., died Monday, Dec. 22, 1997, at her home.

A native of Caswell County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Samuel Covington, and the daughter of Mr. Willis Corbett and Mrs. Sarah Corbett, both deceased.

She was employed by the Burlington City School System before her retirement.

She was a member of Arches Grove United Church of Christ.

Survivors include two sons, Mr. Essue Covington of Birmingham, Ala., and Mr. Bennie Covington of Detroit; five daughters, Mrs. Florine Pollard of Smyrna, Del., Mrs. Ivia Mae Benson of Philadelphia, Mrs. Vera Davis of Burlington, Mrs. Nora Lee Trollinger of Graham and Ms. Acquanetta Covington of Yeadon, Pa.; a sister, Mrs. Martha Price of Framingham, Mass.; 12 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a son, Mr. Larry A. Covington.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Arches Grove United Church of Christ by the Rev. William H. Carr, pastor.

The family will be at Sharpe Funeral Home from 7 to 8 this evening, and at other times at the home.

Mr. George H. Sartin

GREENSBORO - Mr. George Haywood Sartin, 94, of 4216 United St., died Thursday, Dec. 25, 1997, at his home.

Survivors include a son, the Rev. Charles William Sartin of Concord; four daughters, Ms. Chattie S. Parker, Ms. Eva S. Wall, Ms. Neceva S. Davis, all of Greensboro, and Ms. Georgianna S. Kendrick of Wirtz, Va.; two foster daughters, Ms. Brenda W. Keafuver of Potomac, Md., and Ms. Elsie Haithcock of Greensboro; a sister, Ms. Nettie Duke of Burlington; 10 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mrs. Lilah Edna Sartin, in 1983.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Muirs Chapel United Methodist Church by the Rev. John Kale. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Cemetery.

The family will be at Forbis and Dick Funeral Home, Guilford Chapel on West Friendly Avenue from 7 to 9 this evening.

Memorials may be made to Muirs Chapel United Methodist Church, Men's Bible Class, 314 Muirs Chapel Road, Greensboro, N.C. 27401.

Mrs. Winston Drewery

BURLINGTON - Mrs. Winston Webster Drewery, 74, of 1594 Meeting Ground Road, died at 11:28 p.m. Monday, Dec. 22, 1997, at her home.

A native of Alamance County, she was the wife of Mr. William Henry Drewery, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. Lonnie Ashburn Webster and Mrs. Geneva Cobb Webster, both deceased. She was a homemaker and a member of the TOPS Health Group. She was a member of City Lake Baptist Church.

Survivors other than her husband of the home include four daughters, Mrs. Patsy Brown of Mebane, Mrs. Norma Lee Rimmer of Saxapahaw, Mrs. Louise Bowens and Mrs. Vanessa Parker, both of Burlington; two sons, Mr. William Henry Drewery Jr. of Swepsonville and Mr. Lonnie Earl Drewery of Seagrove; two sisters, Mrs. Norma Orlean Puckett of Greensboro and Ms. Dorothy Bell Drewery of Gibsonville; two brothers, Mr. Cicero Arthur 'C.A.' Webster and Mr. Bobby Earl Webster, both of Gibsonville; 11 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one daughter, Mrs. Joyce McPherson; two sisters, Mrs. Mabel Rittle and Mrs. Ruth Ellen Kanupps; and two brothers, Mr. Dick Webster and Mr. Barry Eugene Webster.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at City Lake Baptist Church by the Rev. Fred Madren, pastor. The body will be placed in the church 30 minutes before the service. Burial will be in Gibsonville City Cemetery.

The family will be at Lowe Funeral Home from 6 to 8 Friday evening, and at other times at the home.

Mr. Earl W. Parker

ELON COLLEGE - Mr. Earl W. Parker, 79, of Elon College, died Tuesday, Dec. 23, 1997, at his home after a four-month illness.

A native of East Orange, N.J., he was the husband of Mrs. Elizabeth Walker Parker who survives, and the son of Mr. L. Wright Parker and Mrs. Marie Westall Parker, both deceased. He was a supervisor for Western Electric before retiring. He was a member of the Elon College Exchange Club, the Downtown Dancers and several other dance clubs. He was a member of the Antique Automobile Club of America, an Army veteran of World War II and the National Guard. He was a member of Elon College Community Church.

Survivors other than his wife of the home include three sons, Mr. E. Jack

Parker of Norcross, Ga., Mr. Larry W. Parker and Mr. James W. Parker, both of Burlington; and four grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a son, Mr. Russell B. Parker, and a brother, Mr. Harold W. Parker.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Elon College Community Church by the Rev. Arch Aitcheson, pastor.

The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church.

Memorials may be made to Elon College Community Church, Elon College, N.C. 27244; Hospice of Alamance-Caswell, P.O. Box 2122, Burlington, N.C. 27216; or to Elon College Exchange Club.

Lowe Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Clarence Turner

RAMSEUR - Mr. Clarence Vernon Turner, 78, of Country Forest Manor in Siler

City, formerly of 1382 Ramseur-Julian Road, died Monday, Dec. 22, 1997.

A native of Alamance County, he was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Rachel Nance of Ramseur; two brothers, Mr. J.C. Turner of Graham and Mr. Charles N. Turner Jr. of Elon College; and three grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. today at Gilmore Memorial Park in Julian.

Loflin Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Robert G. Stanton

GRAHAM - Mr. Robert Graham 'Bob' Stanton, 74, of 3348 Boy Wood Road, died at 1:25 p.m. Monday, Dec. 22, 1997, at Triangle Hospice of Hillsborough after a short illness.

A native of Marlboro County, he was the husband of Mrs. Cornelia Coble Stanton, who survives, and the son of Mr. John Mack Stanton and Mrs. Elva Quick Stanton. He was a retired truck driver and was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.

Survivors other than his wife of the home include a daughter, Ms. Kay Stanton Combs of Graham; a son, Mr. Ted R. Stanton of California; six brothers, Mr. Hubert Stanton of California, Mr. Jack Stanton of Hartsville, S.C., Mr. James R. Stanton of Orlando, Fla., Mr. Curtis Stanton of Pawleys Island, S.C., Mr. Lynn Stanton of Bennettsville, S.C., and Mr. Alvin Stanton of Gibson; two sisters, Ms. Dorrie Stanton Gibson of Gibson and Ms. Jewel Stanton Powell of Darlington, S.C.; and two grandchildren.

A graveside service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Mt. Hermon United Methodist Church cemetery by the Rev. Rick Moser.

The family will be at McClure Funeral Home in Graham from 6 to 8 Friday evening.

Mrs. Carrie Boseman

BURLINGTON - Mrs. Carrie Traynham Boseman, 88, of 711 Chandler Ave., died Tuesday morning, Dec. 23, 1997, at Hillhaven of Alamance in Graham, after several years of failing health.

A native of Anderson County, S.C., she was the wife of the late Mr. Ollie Sylvester Boseman, and the daughter of Mr. Willie T. Traynham and Mrs. Regina Fair Traynham, both deceased. She was a member of First Baptist Church on Apple Street.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Jeanette B. Simmons and Mrs. Equilla B. Davis, both of Burlington.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at North Lawn cemetery by Dr. R.W. Styles Sr., pastor of First Baptist Church on Apple Street.

The family will be at Hargett and Bryant Funeral Home at 10:30 a.m. Friday.

Mr. Herman Lawson

BURLINGTON - Mr. Herman Lee 'Joe' Lawson, 50, of 2414 Evergreen Ave., died Tuesday, Dec. 23, 1997, at Veterans Administration Hospital in Durham after an illness of several months.

A native of Caswell County, he was the husband of Mrs. Laverne Rogers Lawson, who survives, and the son of Mr. Louis Lawson Sr., who survives, and the late Mrs. Melissa Walker Lawson. He was a graduate of Caswell County High School.

He served in Vietnam, where he was awarded the Purple Heart. He was a member of Holy Tabernacle of Jesus Christ.

Survivors other than his wife of Burlington and father of Burlington include a son, Mr. Joseph Rodney Lawson of Burlington; two stepsons, Mr. Terry Rogers and Mr. Jerry Rogers, both of Burlington; two sisters, Ms. Ruthie Lawson of the home and Mrs. Elizabeth Wright of Elon College; two brothers, Mr. James Lawson of Elon College and Mr. Louis Lawson Jr. of Reidsville; and one grandchild.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at Hargett and Bryant Funeral Home Chapel by Ms. Beatrice Burnett, pastor of Holy Tabernacle of Jesus Christ. Burial will be in North Lawn Cemetery.

The family will be at Hargett and Bryant Funeral Home 30 minutes before the service and at other times at the home.

Mr. Phalti Lawrence

HAMILTON, Ohio - Mr. W. Phalti Lawrence, 88, died at 10:55 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 21, 1997, at Westover Retirement Community.

Born Nov. 4, 1909, in Elon College, he was the husband of Mrs. Ruth Alexander Lawrence, who died in 1994, and the son of Mr. Walter P. Lawrence and Mrs. Annie Graham Lawrence, both deceased. He was a 1925 graduate of Elon High School, a 1929 graduate of Elon College, and a 1930 graduate of N.C. State University. He completed the AMP Course at Harvard Business School in 1956. He was employed by Champion International Corporation from 1930 to 1974. He was a scout leader, a member of the Hamilton Kiwanis Club, Hamilton Elks Lodge, the Elks Golf League, and the Hamilton Association of Trade and Industry (Chamber of Commerce). He was a member of the Hamilton Boys Club Board of Directors, Goodwill Industry Advisory Board and the United Way of Hamilton Board of Trustees. He was an active member in the Presbyterian Church of Hamilton.

Survivors include a son, Dr. David A. Lawrence of Reading, Penn.; six grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Ms. Mary Graham Mackintosh.

A memorial service will be conducted at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Presbyterian Church, Front and High streets, by the Rev. Edwin R. Beck, Westover chaplain.

The family will be at the church following the service.

Memorials may be made to the Presbyterian Church or Westover Retirement Community Benevolent Fund.
