Mr. James Nicholson Jr.

MEBANE - Mr. James Albert Nicholson Jr., 81, of 3822 I-85 Frontage Road, died at 10:52 p.m. Monday, Dec. 22, 1997, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after three years of failing health.

A native of Alamance County, he was the husband of Mrs. Christine Bradshaw Nicholson, who survives, and the son of Mr. James Albert Nicholson Sr. and Mrs. Cora Jobe Nicholson, both deceased. He was a retired self-employed grading contractor for 22 years. He was a life member of Hebron United Methodist Church, where he was a member of the choir for 50 years, and a member of several gospel groups. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II and served in the South Pacific. He was a Mason.

Survivors other than his wife of the home include three sisters, Mrs. Evelyn B. Atkins of Hillsborough, Mrs. Rozelle N. Martin and Mrs. Josephine N. Burgess, both of Mebane; three brothers, Mr. Robert Ervin Nicholson of Efland, Mr. Fletcher Arnold Nicholson of Mebane and Mr. Tom Lionel Nicholson of Hillsborough.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Hebron United Methodist Church by the Rev. Jesse Staton, pastor, Burial will be in the church cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Hebron United Methodist Church, 2325 Mebane-Oaks Road, Mebane, N.C. 27302; or to a charity of choice.

McClure Funeral Home in Mebane is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Sara W. Elder

SILER CITY - Mrs. Sara Walker Elder, 65, of 519 Park Drive, died Monday, Dec. 22, 1997, at Chatham Hospital.

A Wilmington native, she was the wife of Mr. William H. 'Bill' Elder, who survives, and the daughter of Mr. D.K. Walker and Mrs. Janice Davis Walker, both deceased. She attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and was a homemaker. She was a member of First United Methodist Church, the Challengers Sunday school class, church choir, the Joy Group and had served on many church committees. She was a member of the Chatham Hospital Auxiliary.

Survivors other than her husband include two sons, Mr. David Sellers of Richmond, Va., and Mr. Ken Sellers of Raleigh; and three grandchildren.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Siler City Presbyterian Church by the Rev. Thomas Sweeley. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.

The family will be at Smith and Buckner Funeral Home from 7 to 9 this evening.

Memorials may be made to First United Methodist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 212, Siler City, N.C. 27344.

Mr. Arthur W. Parker

HILLSBOROUGH - Mr. Arthur Warren Parker, 68, of 2220 Old N.C. 10, died Sunday, Dec. 21, 1997, at his home.

He was the husband of Mrs. Lola Pauline Parker, who survives, and the son of Ms. Ethel R. Wilson Parker, who survives. He was retired from the Navy and was a member of Fleet Reserve Association Branch 52. He was a member of United Pentecostal Church.

Survivors other than his wife of the home and mother of Mebane include two daughters, Ms. Deborah Mebane of Mebane and Ms. Denise Parker of Hillsborough; a son, Mr. Reggie Parker of Efland; three sisters, Ms. Christine Wood of Charlotte, Ms. Mary Gravette of Timberlake and Ms. Geraldine Lunsford of Hurdle Mills; and four grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Walker's Funeral Home Chapel in Hillsborough by the Rev. Johnnie Godair. Burial will be in Hillsborough Town Cemetery.

Mrs. Lalla S. Cook

ELON COLLEGE - Mrs. Lalla Shepherd Cook, 88, of 7177 Tickle Road, died Sunday, Dec. 21, 1997, at Alamance Regional Medical Center.

A native of Guilford County, she was the wife of the late Mr. Ralis Milton Cook, and the daughter of Mr. James A. Shepherd and Mrs. Carrie Apple Shepherd, both deceased. She was retired from Ossipee Mill and was a member of Apple's Chapel Christian Church.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Edith Cook Elliott of Gibsonville; two brothers, Mr. Arlie Shepherd and Mr. Paul Shepherd, both of Elon College; a grandchild; and a great-grandchild.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Bartlett Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Don Ledbetter. Burial will be in Apple's Chapel Christian Church cemetery.

The family will be at Bartlett Funeral Home from 7 to 9 this evening, and at other times at the home of her daughter, 6649 Cotton Road, Gibsonville.

Mr. Robert G. Stanton

GRAHAM - Mr. Robert 'Bob' Graham Stanton, 74, of 3348 Boy Wood Road died at 1:25 p.m. Monday, Dec. 22, 1997, at Triangle Hospice in Hillsborough, after a short illness.

McClure Funeral Service in Graham is in charge of arrangements, which are incomplete.

Mr. John S. Arico

GRAHAM - Mr. John Salvatore Arico, 79, of 1803 Meadowview Drive, died at 2:30 a.m. Monday, Dec. 22, 1997, at the Hospice Home of Burlington after eight months of failing health, two weeks critical.

A native of New York City, he was the husband of Mrs. Beverly Arico, who survives, and the son of Mr. Albert Arico and Mrs. Rose Vinci Arico, both deceased. He was retired from IBM, Research Triangle Park and was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II. He was a member of the Alamance County Hospice League and was a volunteer with the Adult Literacy Program at Alamance Community College in Burlington. He was a member of Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church.

Survivors other than his wife of the home include a daughter, Mrs. Alice Morrison of Flemington, N.J.; two sons, Mr. Bert Arico of Gibsonville and Mr. Andrew Arico of Burlington; a sister, Mrs. Anne Gilpin of Massapequa, N.Y.; a brother, Mr. Louis Arico of Yonkers, N.Y.; and five grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church of Graham by the Rev. Paul Phillips, pastor, the Rev. Bob Eldridge, minister of visitation, and the Rev. Jim Bowen of Winston-Salem. Burial will be in Graham Memorial Park.

The family will be at McClure Funeral Home in Graham from 7 to 9 this evening, and at other times at the home.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of Alamance-Caswell, P.O. Box 2122, Burlington, N.C. 27216-2122.

Mr. John A. Compton

MEBANE - Mr. John Aaron Compton, 64, of Route 1, Box 576, Holt Street Ext., died Saturday, Dec. 20, 1997, at Dorothea Dix Hospital.

A native of Alamance County, he was the son of Mr. Jack Aaron Compton and Mrs. Virginia Crisp, both deceased. He was a self-employed truck driver.

Survivors include a brother, Mr. Jack Compton of Mebane.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Sharpe Memorial Chapel with burial in Yadkins United Presbyterian Church cemetery.

The family will be at the funeral home 30 minutes before the service.

Mr. A.J. Perry

BURLINGTON - Mr. Alsie John 'A.J.' Perry, 80, of 1864 White Kennel Road died at 2:17 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 21, 1997, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after a brief illness.

An Alamance County native, he was the husband of the late Mrs. Elizabeth Moore Perry and the son of Mr. Alsie Perry and Mrs. Duell Bayliff Perry, both deceased. He was retired from Burlington Industries and served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a member of Glen Hope Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Debbie Murray of Graham and Mrs. Penny Steagall of Burlington; three sisters, Mrs. Elsie Howell, Mrs. Sybil Walker and Mrs. Virginia Crutchfield, all of Graham; two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Ms. Louise Burke and Ms. Hilda Ector.

The funeral will conducted at 2 p.m. today at McClure Funeral Home Chapel in Graham by the Rev. Larry Lamberth, pastor of Harvest Baptist Church. Burial will be in Alamance Memorial Park.

The family will be at McClure Funeral Home in Graham two hours before the service, and at other times at the home of Mrs. Debbie Murray, 1819 Brinton Court, Graham.

Mr. Johnnie Kirkland

SAVANNAH, Ga. - Mr. Johnnie Lee Kirkland, 71, died Saturday, Dec. 20, 1997,

at Memorial Medical Center after a short illness.

A Pierce County, Ga., native who had lived in Savannah since 1944, he was the husband of Mrs. Virginia Blair Kirkland, who survives. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and was employed for 44 years by Union Camp Corp. as an accountant. He served on the deacon board of Ardsley Park Baptist Church and had formerly served as chairman of the Board of Deacons. He was the director of the Adult 3 Sunday School Department and was co-leader of Mission Work at Savannah Convalescent Center for 24 years. He had also served on the finance committee. He was a member of Landrum Lodge No. 48 F & AM and the 7th District Volunteer Fire Department.

Survivors other than his wife of Savannah include three sons, Mr. Timothy M. Kirkland of Fleming, Ga., Mr. Craig Kirkland of Rincon, Ga., and Mr. Larry W. Moore of Savannah; three daughters, Ms. Kay L. Lindley of Burlington, Ms. Donna M. Yawn of Savannah and Ms. Sherry L. Clark of Thunderbolt, Ga.; two sisters, Ms. Lou Jean Odum of Dunellon, Fla., and Ms. Willie Mae Lee of Hoboken, Ga.; a brother, Mr. Herman Kirkland of Brownwood, Texas; 8 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. today at Ardsley Baptist Church.

Burial will be in Hillcrest Abbey Memorial Park.

Memorials may be made to the Van Fund c/o Ardsley Park Baptist Church, 1 East 55th St., Savannah, Ga. 31405.

Hubert C. Baker Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Alphonso Johnson

MEBANE - Mr. Alphonso S. Johnson of 213 West St. died Wednesday, Dec. 17, 1997, at Moses H. Cone Memorial Hospital in Greensboro.

An Alamance County native, he was the husband of Mrs. Helen Marie Jones Johnson, who survives, and the son of Mr. Charlie Johnson and the late Mrs. Eursula Scott Johnson, both deceased. He was retired from Walter Kiddie Company.

Survivors other than his wife of the home include one son, Mr. Alphonso Johnson Jr. of the home; two daughters, Miss Deborah C. Johnson of Oakland, Calif., and Master Sgt. Gail Renee Johnson of the U.S. Air Force in Germany; one brother, Mr. Joe Louis Johnson of Mebane; two sisters, Mrs. Emma Holt and Mrs. Eunice Tapp, both of Mebane and two grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. today at Hunter Chapel AME Church by the Rev. Shelton Miles. Burial will be in Mebane Community Cemetery.

Sharpe Funeral Home Inc. is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Lee Roy Capps

SNOW CAMP - Mr. Lee Roy Capps, 55, of 6211 Patterson Mill Road died at 4:45 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 20, 1997, at Alamance Regional Medical Center after nine months of failing health and a critical illness of one week.

An Alamance County native, he was the husband of Mrs. April Simmons Capps, who survives, and the son of Mrs. Hazel Allred Capps, who survives, and the late Mr. John William Capps. He was employed with AMI and was a member of Piedmont Baptist Church.

Survivors other than his wife of the home and mother of Burlington include a daughter, Mrs. Mona Alas of Sandy Cross; two sons, Mr. David Capps of Anderson and Mr. James Capps of Pleasant Grove; two sisters, Mrs. Daisey Ann Matkins of Greensboro and Mrs. Marie Peacemaker of Rockingham; two brothers, Mr. Daniel Capps of Swepsonville and Mr. Donald Capps of Anderson; four stepchildren, seven grandchildren and six step-grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at McClure Funeral Home Chapel in Graham by the Rev. David Braddy, pastor of Piedmont Baptist Church.

Burial will be in Mt. Zion Baptist Church cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at McClure Funeral Home in Graham and at other times at the home of Mr. Donald Capps, 94 Capps Gunn Drive, Mebane.

Mrs. Blanch D. Parrish

KERNERSVILLE - Mrs. Blanch Dillon Parrish, 94, died Sunday, Dec. 21, 1997, at the Evergreens in Greensboro.

A Forsyth County native, she was a homemaker.

Survivors include two daughters, Ms. Sara Howerton of Sedalia and Ms. Myrtle 'Mutt' Parrish of Madison; a son, Mr. Billy Parrish of Greensboro; 10 grandchildren, 16 great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.

The funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Hayworth-Miller-Cain Kernersville Chapel by the Rev. Bill Skeens. Burial will follow in the Morris Chapel United Methodist Church cemetery in Walkertown.

The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 tonight at the funeral home.
