Steele, Jack Harold
MOUNT AIRY - Mr. Jack Harold Steele, 79, of 1214 E. Linville Road, Mount Airy, widower of Mrs. Ruth Steele, died Monday morning, July 19, 2004, at Northern Hospital of Surry County. Mr. Steele was born Feb. 24, 1925, in Surry County to the late Walter and Nancy Laster Steele. He was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Navy in the South Pacific as an aviation ordnanceman first class. Mr. Steele was retired from Riverside Building Supply and was a member of Rockford Street United Methodist Church. Surviving are two daughters and two sons-in-law, Billie and Bill Casstevens of Mount Airy and Jo Anne and R.J. Cummings of Elkin; five grandchildren and spouses, Joel and Carol Casstevens of Mount Airy, Lori Shumate of Elkin, Rebecca Cummings of Raleigh, Jennifer and Luke Cave of Elkin and Robert Cummings of Winston-Salem; six great-grandchildren; a brother and sister-in-law, Garnett and Mary Ann Steele of Mount Airy; and a brother-in-law, Bill Carter of Mount Airy. In addition to his wife and parents, Mr. Steele was preceded in death by six sisters, Ola S. Martin, Alma S. Childress, Suvellin "Billie" Steele, Mary S. Joyce, Frances S. Isley and Margaret S. Carter; and two brothers, Walter Leonard Steele Jr. and James Edison Steele. The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, July 21, at Rockford Street United Methodist Church, conducted by the Rev. Harry Sherrill, the Rev. Julie Roberts and Mr. D.C. "Bill" Carter, with burial to follow in the Skyline Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 this evening, July 20, at Moody Funeral Home of Mount Airy, where his body will remain until carried to the church for the service. Flowers will be accepted or memorials may be made to Rockford Street United Methodist Church, c/o Mr. C.B. Roberson, 488 Old Hwy 601, Mount Airy, NC 27030 or to Central View Baptist Church Building Fund, c/o Wilburn Carpenter, 120 Red Cedar Lane, Dobson, NC 27017.

Swinson, Samuel Malcolm "Mack"
Samuel Malcolm "Mack" Swinson died suddenly at Sunset Beach on Saturday, July 17, 2004. He was born July 10, 1956, in Winter Haven, Fla., to Starkey Warren Swinson and Eloise Emory Pike Swinson. He was an operations trainer for Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina. Prior to this position, he worked for more than 20 years at US Airways, formerly Piedmont Airlines. He was a member of Mount Tabor United Methodist Church, where he served as a Stephen's minister, counseling others and was a member of the Mount Tabor United Methodist Men. Mack was also a member of the Home Builders Sunday School Class and chaired the Great Day of Service Project at AIDS Care Service. He was a loyal member of the YMCA and appreciated the many friends and staff with whom he exercised on a regular basis. He loved the beach and particularly enjoyed long walks on the beach. Mack's genuine interest in others and zest for life drew people toward him. He never met a stranger. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Ogburn Swinson, and their daughter, Mary Ogburn Swinson and their son, Michael Warren Swinson of the home; a daughter, Tara Nicole Swinson of Winston-Salem; a sister and brother-in-law, Lynn and Roy McAfee of Tampa, Fla.; a twin brother, Michael Warren "Mike" Swinson of Tampa, Fla.; in-laws Mary Ceile and Sam Ogburn of Winston-Salem; and a host of friends who will miss his caring and unique style. The service will be held at 2 p.m. today, July 20, at Vogler Reynolda Road Chapel. The family will receive visitors immediately following the service. Memorials may be made to Mount Tabor United Methodist Church, 3543 Robinhood Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27106 or the YMCA Central Branch, 775 West End Blvd., Winston-Salem, NC 27101.

Winebarger, Fred Lynnwood "Freddy"
VILAS - Mr. Fred Lynnwood "Freddy" Winebarger, 68, died Sunday, July 18, 2004. The service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Forest Grove Baptist Church. Austin & Barnes Funeral Home in Boone is serving the family.

Bingham, Edith Beatrice Mast
WEST JEFFERSON - Mrs. Edith Beatrice Mast Bingham, better known as "Granny Bingham, " 94, of West Jefferson died Friday afternoon, July 16, 2004, at Segraves Nursing Care Center in Jefferson. Granny Bingham was born in Watauga County on Monday, Oct. 18, 1909, to the late James R. Mast and to the late Addie Weaver Mast. She taught and retired from West Jefferson Elementary School. She was an active member of the West Jefferson United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, William Paul Bingham. She is survived by a son, Benny Bingham of West Jefferson; a daughter, Barbara Roland and husband Ted of West Jefferson; five grandchildren, Sherri Hodges, Shannon Pham, Shawn Frank, Christina Osborne and Jane McNeill; and six great-grandchildren, Ben Creed, Brandi Creed, Amber Creed, Holly Hodges, Kaitlyn Frank and Madison Frank. The funeral service will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday, July 18, at Boone Family Funeral Home Chapel by the Rev. Kirk McNeill. Burial will follow in the Ashelawn Memorial Gardens Cemetery. The family will receive friends from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Sunday, one hour prior to the funeral service. In lieu of flowers, memorials may to the West Jefferson United Methodist Church, P.O. Binkley, Eldon G.
CLEMMONS - Eldon G. Binkley of Clemmons died peacefully in his sleep Thursday, July 15, 2004, after a long illness. He is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, Ruth Hauser Binkley; and two loving children, Ruth Lynne Binkley Finley of Clemmons and Don Binkley and wife, Sandra, of Fruit Heights, Utah. His five adoring grandchildren are Roxanne F. Anders, Daniel H. Binkley, Tammy K. Sense, Erin Binkley Morris and Jennifer L. Binkley. He was the third child of George D. Binkley and Mattie Hennings Binkley of Yadkin County. Surviving are his brothers, Thurman G. Binkley and James D. Binkley; and a sister, Dixie Binkley Horton. He was preceded in death by brothers George D. Binkley and Thomas Binkley. He served in the U.S. Army as a staff sergeant during World War II and was awarded the Bronze Star following action at the Battle of Mortain, France, and the Battle of the Bulge. He proudly served in the 120th Infantry, 30th Division, "Old Hickory." After returning home from World War II, he was employed at R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. for more than 37 years and was a plant manager at Whitaker Park until his retirement in 1983. A devoted father and husband, he was also very active in church activities at Christ Moravian Church in Winston-Salem. He served as a trustee, an elder and as president of the Sam Marx Bible Class. Always interested in flying, he earned a private pilot's license in 1958 and shared ownership of a small private airplane with his brothers. He was an avid supporter of the Mission Aviation Fellowship. Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, July 18, at Vogler's Main Street Chapel. After a private interment at God's Acre, a memorial service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday, July 19, at Christ Moravian Church, 919 W. Academy St., Winston-Salem, followed by a reception in the fellowship hall. Floral tributes may be sent to Vogler's Main Street Chapel. Memorial gifts may be sent to Christ Moravian Church, 919 W. Academy St., Winston-Salem, NC 27101-5103 or the Mission Aviation Fellowship (for the Steve Marx family), P.O. Box 3202, Redland, CA 92373-0998.

Bowman, Willa Mae Everhart
Mrs. Willa Mae Everhart Bowman, 89, died Thursday, July 15, 2004, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home in Winston-Salem. Mrs. Bowman was born March 31, 1915, in Thomasville, daughter of Charles Thomas Everhart and Sallie Mae Wright Everhart. Her husband, William Irvin Bowman, preceded her in death. Two brothers, Elliott J. Everhart and Warren T. "Bill" Everhart; and three sisters, Juanita Everhart Johnson, Pride Everhart Brooks and Oweenee Everhart Kennedy, also preceded Mrs. Bowman in death. Surviving are two nieces, Anne Kennedy Brock of Winston-Salem and Barbara Everhart Gyle of Baltimore, Md.; and a nephew, Charles Thomas Everhart of Noblesville, Ind. Mrs. Bowman lived in Greensboro for 45 years and returned to Thomasville to the Piedmont Center Retirement Home in 1999. She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Greensboro. She spent her career in the field of insurance and was active in professional associations, including having been president of the N.C. Insurance Women. A funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Monday, July 19, at First Presbyterian Church in Greensboro, with the Rev. Fred Horner and the Rev. Charles Gyle officiating. Burial will follow in Forest Lawn Cemetery. The family will receive friends at 1:30 p.m. Monday immediately prior to the service in the Blair Hagan Room at First Presbyterian Church and from 3 to 7 p.m. Sunday, July 18, at Anne Brock's home in Winston-Salem. Mrs. Bowman will lie in state until noon Monday at Hanes-Lineberry Vanstory Street Funeral Home in Greensboro.

Conrad, Rosa Mae Fishel
Mrs. Rosa Mae Fishel Conrad, 76, of Ebert Road in Forsyth County passed away at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home on Wednesday, July 14, 2004. Mrs. Conrad was born April 19, 1928, in Forsyth County to Joseph M. Fishel Sr. and Dora Cathrine Fishel. Preceding her in death were a brother, J.M. Fishel Jr., and her stepmother, Sallie Beatrice Bulla Fishel. Rosa was mother and homemaker to a husband, Charles Conrad, and what she called three perfect children. Those children are Christopher B. Conrad and wife Julia, along with son Adam Conrad, a daughter Jenifer Conrad of Indialantic, Fla.; and Timothy B. Conrad and wife Arlene and daughter Lacy Conrad, all of Woodbine, Md.; Joe Crosby Conrad and wife Sara Jean and son Joe C. Conrad II of Yadkinville and Forsyth County; a daughter Juli V. Conrad (deceased); and a stepdaughter, Kathryn E. Hamel. Rosa will be greatly missed by her husband of nearly 57 years and her three sons and their families. She was surely a pearl of great price. An 11 a.m. graveside service will be held today, July 17, at Friedberg Moravian Church Graveyard, with the Rev. G. Thomas Shelton officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorials in Rosa's honor may be made to Friedberg Moravian Church, 2178 Friedberg Church Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27127. The family wishes to express a special thank-you to all the staffers at the Hospice Home for their loving care of Rosa, also to Triad Surgical Associates and Forsyth Medical Center.

Debose, Dorothy Lee
Ms. Dorothy Lee Debose, 70, of 1850 Disher Road, Midway community, passed Wednesday, July 14, 2004, at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born May 31, 1934, in Lexington to the late Robert B. and Jessie Mae Lindsay Tuttle. She was formerly employed by Kayby Mills and a member of Gates of Zion Glorious Church of God. She was preceded in death by her husband, Thomas E. Debose; her father, Robert B. Tuttle; her mother, Jessie M. Tuttle; a sister, Lula M. DeLapp; and grandparents Oscar and Mittie Lindsay. She leaves to cherish her loving memories three daughters, Ms. Wilhemina Douglas, Ms. Melissa Tuttle and Mrs. Charlotte (Timothy) Winston, all of Midway; two sons, Mr. Thomas L. Debose and Mr. Bryce V. (Lula) Debose, both of Midway; a stepmother, Vivian Tuttle; a stepson, Ernest James of Norwalk, Conn.; a stepbrother, Ernest James; seven grandchildren, Tonya Page, Kimberly Debose, Kerry Debose, Mandouy Debose, Shanta Debose, Kizzy Douglas and Braxton Debose; 11 great-grandchildren, Charity Billie, Melody Page, Tantinia Page, Kenneth Page Jr., Dashard McGriff, Kamaya and Keron Epps, Sterlin Debose, Ieshia Debose, Kevin Debose and Domique Fuller; four aunts, Lilly Moore, Odallia Thomas, Lula Hayes and Lola Lindsay; two sisters-in-law, Drusilla Norfleet and Anna Bella Grimes; devoted friends Mother Betty Mae Tuttle, Edna Carter and Dot Griley; devoted cousins, Ivan and Lena Mae Leonard; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and friends. The funeral service will be conducted at 4 p.m. Sunday, July 18, at Gates of Zion Glorious Church of God with Bishop Robert G. Melton officiating. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends from 7:30 to 8:30 this evening, July 17, at Gates of Zion Glorious Church of God. The family may be contacted and the funeral cortege will assemble and leave from the residence. Arrangements entrusted to and services conducted by Gilmore Funeral Home Services.

THOMASVILLE - Mrs. Elizabeth "Betty" Ward Fouts, 83, died Friday, July 16, 2004. The funeral will be 3:30 p.m. Sunday at Emanuel Reformed United Church of Christ. J.C. Green & Sons Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
