Gentry, Bertha Clayton
Mrs. Bertha Clayton Gentry, 99, of Heritage Woods in Winston-Salem died early Wednesday morning, July 14, 2004, at the Charleston Area Medical Center in Charleston, W.Va. She was born Nov. 11, 1904, in Person County to Melvin Thomas and Annie Farmer Clayton. Mrs. Clayton was a lifelong member of Ardmore Baptist Church. She was preceded in death by her husband, Hubert Bryce Gentry Sr., and a daughter, Nancy Smith. Surviving are a son, H. Bryce Gentry Jr., of Winston-Salem; a daughter, Page Deardorff, and husband, Dr. W. Alva, of Charleston, W.Va.; a brother, Ras Clayton, of Roxboro; a son-in-law, Earl F. Smith, of Winston-Salem; seven grandchildren, Patricia Dwiggins, Mike Deardorff, Jennifer McClung, Dr. David Deardorff, Greg Smith, Mark Gentry and Kim Dezern; and 10 great-grandchildren. A funeral service will be conducted at 11 a.m. today, July 17, at Ardmore Baptist Church by Dr. Bill Ireland. Burial will follow in Oaklawn Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to Ardmore Baptist Church Building Fund, 530 Irving St., Winston-Salem, NC 27103.

Hatfield, Joan Christine
Mrs. Joan Christine Hatfield, a loyal wife, mother and friend, peacefully passed away Wednesday, July 14, 2004, at Forsyth Medical Center after a continuing battle with cancer. Mrs. Hatfield, who will be remembered as charismatic and vivacious by all who knew her, was a beautiful and amazing woman who touched many lives. She was preceded in death by her father, Dr. Thomas F. O'Brien, DDS, and her mother, Bernetta O'Brien. Surviving are her husband of 39 years, C. Lyman Hatfield; her daughters, Nancy Hatfield of Atlanta, Ga., Susan Morris and husband Joe of Winston-Salem and Kathy Hatfield and fiance David Laws and his daughter, Jessica, of Pfafftown; and a brother, Dr. Thomas F. O'Brien Jr. and wife Nancy. Joan will be missed by her beloved pet, Comeer. She was a 1950 graduate of Marymount College in Tarrytown, N.Y., and a faithful member of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church. Joan was an avid fan of the arts, Wake Forest football and basketball, and yard sales. She was a collector of pottery. A private celebration of her life will be held for family and close friends. Memorials may be made to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, P.O. Box 650309, Dallas, TX 75265-0309, or www.komen.org. Vogler & Sons Reynolda Road Chapel is serving the family.

Kye, Juanita Palmer
Mrs. Juanita Palmer Kye, 84, passed away Thursday, July 15, 2004, at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born Oct. 10, 1919, in Forsyth County to Oscar and Rose Nichols Palmer. Mrs. Kye was a loving and giving person to those who knew her. She loved flowers, going to the beach, playing bingo, and even enjoyed watching NASCAR. Mrs. Kye was a member of the Joy Club at Rosemont Baptist Church. Preceding her in death was her husband, Lee Edward Kye Sr. Surviving are two daughters, Patsy Bolling and her husband Larry and Linda Goodman and her husband Bruce, all of Winston-Salem; a son, Lee Kye Jr. and his wife Penny of Winston-Salem; two grandchildren, Bryan Bolling and his wife Jessica and Shannon Walker and her husband Mack; and five great-grandchildren. Also surviving are two sisters, Betty Templeton of Winston-Salem and Claire Rudebaugh of Virginia; and a special niece, Bonnie Teagle and her husband Al of California. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 18, at Parklawn Memorial Park, with Elder E.W. Parks officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m. today, July 17, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel.

Marsh, Annie Frances Lasater
Mrs. Annie Frances Lasater Marsh, 84, of Winston-Salem, widow of Carl W. Marsh, died Thursday, July 15, 2004. Mrs. Marsh was born in Chatham County on June 1, 1920, to Thomas E. and Carrie Elizabeth Byrd Lasater. She was a member of Rosemont Baptist Church. Surviving are a daughter, Sandra Marsh Volkl of Jacksonville, Fla.; a granddaughter, Jennifer Edwards; a great-grandson, Forest Edwards; and numerous nieces and nephews. A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. today, July 17, at Oaklawn Memorial Gardens by the Rev. Donald E. Bailey, nephew. The family requests that any memorials be made to the Alzheimer's Association, 3800 Shamrock Drive, Charlotte, NC 28215. Voglers Main Street Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

McEachin Jr., John Pat "Crab"
LEXINGTON - Mr. John Pat "Crab" McEachin Jr., 51, of 265 Eller Road, Lexington died Thursday, July 15, 2004, at Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center as a result of a motorcycle accident. He was born May 22, 1953, a son of John Pat and Opal Young McEachin Sr., who preceded him in death. He was also preceded in death by a brother, John Wesley Young "Dub" Wallace. He was a tire shop supervisor with ABF Freight Liner and a member of Teamsters Local 391 and Midway United Methodist Church. Mr. McEachin was an avid fan of NASCAR driver Tony Stewart and loved to ride his Harley Davidson motorcycle and left this world doing what he loved best. Surviving are his wife, Lynn Ayers McEachin of the home; two sons, Johnny Pat McEachin III and Daniel Shane McEachin, both of the home; his brothers, Tom Wallace of Kernersville and Dan Wallace and wife Jean of Low Gap; his father-in-law and mother-in-law, Bill and Clara Mae Barr of Lewisville; a sister-in-law, Karen Davis and husband Jeep of Mocksville; a brother-in-law, Gary Ayers and wife Regina of Trinity; special pets Taz and Miss Opal; special friends at Judy's 1, Judy's Too and Ted's Kickin' Chicken; and many friends, nieces and nephews. A memorial service will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday, July 18, at Davidson Funeral Home Hickory Tree Chapel by the Rev. David Calhoun. The family will receive friends from 1 to 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home and other times at the home, 265 Eller Road, Lexington. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Shane McEachin College Fund at Lexington State Bank, Midway office, 11492 Old U.S. Hwy 52, Winston-Salem, NC 27107, attn: Lynn McEachin.

McKnight, Ronald Eugene
LEWISVILLE - Mr. Ronald Eugene McKnight, 38, passed away unexpectedly at his home Wednesday, July 14, 2004. He was preceded in death by his mother, Dot McKnight. He is survived by his wife, Tina Leonard McKnight; two daughters, Kayla and Brianna; three sons, Justin, Little Ronnie and Tyler, all of the home; a brother, Ricky McKnight and wife Kay; two sisters, Brenda Johnson and Pat Calloway; his father, Fred E. McKnight; and several special nieces and nephews. The funeral service will be held at 4 p.m. Monday, July 19, at Vogler & Sons Clemmons Chapel. The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Olinger, Norma Jeanne Lanier
GEORGETOWN, Texas - Norma Jeanne Lanier Olinger, beloved wife, mother, grandmother and friend passed away Wednesday, July 14, 2004, after a valiant fight with ovarian cancer. The eldest of four children, Norma was born to Leon Isaiah Lanier and Grace Harper Lanier on July 25, 1931, in Winston-Salem, N.C. She attended elementary and high school there. She graduated from the University of Virginia School of Nursing in 1952. While at UVA, Norma met medical student Sheff Daniel Olinger Jr. They were marriage in 1953 and recently celebrated their 51st wedding anniversary. In the early years of their marriage, Norma supported and accompanied her husband, working at Tripler Army Hospital in Honolulu, Fort Bragg, N.C., and the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor, Mich. They came to Dallas, Texas, where Norma devoted herself to her children and various charitable activities. She was active in the Highland Park schools' PTAs, the Dallas Medical Society Auxiliary and the Assistance League of Dallas. She supported and contributed in essential ways to her husband's successful career in neurology. Throughout her life Norma loved to play the piano and did so joyfully for family and friends. She was also an avid reader and after moving to Georgetown eight years ago became a devoted member of the Sun City Book Club, a group that provided her with many hours of conversation, insight and friendship. Norma was preceded in death by her father. She is survived by her loving husband, Dr. Sheff Daniel Olinger Jr. of Georgetown; her daughter, Nancy Olinger and husband, Ferdie Rodriguez, of Austin; her son, Sheff Daniel Olinger III and wife, Laina Olinger, of Dallas; and her daughter, Amy Aldridge and husband, Gambill Aldridge, of Elkin, N.C. She is also survived by her mother, Grace Harper Lanier; her sisters, Linda Isley and Betty Fox, all of Winston-Salem, N.C.; her brother, Leon Lanier; and her grandchildren, Mary Clare, David and Becca Rodriguez, Halston, Lauren and Audrey Olinger and Emma Grace Aldridge. She also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews and many friends. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 20, at the Wellspring United Methodist Church, 6200 Williams Drive, Georgetown, by her friend, the Rev. Linda Watkins. A second memorial service will be conducted in Elkin, N.C., at a time to be determined later. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Assistance League of Dallas, 9845 N. Central Expressway, Dallas, Texas 75231. The family would like to extend their sincere thanks and appreciation to Dr. Michael Tenneriello, Dr. Brant Victor, Dr. Ed Peters, Dr. Mark Crozier and Dr. Adam Schneider and the Seton Hospital nurses on 7 North for their kind attention to Norma and her family. LEXINGTON - Hilda Worley Pearson, 64, died Friday, July 16, 2004. The funeral will be 2 p.m. Sunday at Davidson Funeral Home Lexington Chapel.

ARCHDALE - Jack Sexton, 66, died Thursday, July 15, 2004. The funeral will be 3 p.m. Sunday at Full Gospel Freewill Holiness Church in Thomasville. Cumby Family Funeral Service in Archdale is assisting the family.

Sherk, Nancy Dennis
Mrs. Nancy Dennis Sherk passed away peacefully Thursday, July 15, 2004. Nancy was born March 7, 1934, in Hollywood, Calif., the daughter of Elizabeth Triplett Dennis and Harry Buckner Dennis. A graduate of Reynolds High School, Duke University and Wake Forest Law School, she lived with her beloved husband, Abraham Lincoln Sherk, in Winston-Salem. Nancy was an active member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church. She served as the first female senior warden and founded the St. Francis Fellowship. In her capacity as chairman of the Memorial Garden, the Ecclesiastical Arts and the Restoration of the Grounds Committees, Nancy designed, selected, planted and maintained St. Paul's gardens. She received the 1994 Community Appearance Commission of Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Award for significant achievement in improving the appearance of the community and the 2001 Annie Horne Little Award for church gardens from the Garden Club of North Carolina. During her tenure as president of the Garden Club Council of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County, it celebrated its 50th anniversary and published Southern Seasons, a gardening guide and cookbook. Additionally, Nancy was awarded the Wava Howard Award in 2001. As president of the board of trustees of Sciworks, she oversaw the move to its present location. She served as treasurer of the board of directors of the Winston-Salem Junior League. Nancy was appointed by Gov. James Holshouser to participate on the N.C. Zoological Council. Her greatest joy was her "collector's garden" at her home, comprised of more than 1, 000 native plants. It was open to many tours including Master Gardener groups and the N.C. Arboretum staff. Additionally, Nancy's garden was featured in Toby Bost's shade garden video. Nancy was a frequent lecturer on N.C. plants and continued her efforts to beautify her community. She is survived by her devoted husband, Lincoln; her children and grandchildren, Mary Elizabeth Fusco and husband, Bill, of Paradise Valley, Ariz., and their children, Tracey, Carly, Brooke and Katie, Robert Sherk and wife, Julie, of Raleigh and their son, Walker, and Helen Holzwarth and husband, John, of Winston-Salem and their children, Scott, Hank, Trip and Ann; and her beloved brother and bridge partner, Harry Buckner Dennis, and his wife, Nancy, and their children, Betty, Trip and Laura. A memorial service will be conducted at 11 a.m. today, July 17, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 520 Summit St., Winston-Salem. Instead of flowers, the family asks that memorials be directed to the Nancy Sherk St. Paul's Entrance Endowment, which will be established so that the front entrance of St. Paul's Episcopal Church can be landscaped to provide year-round beauty for the enjoyment of parishioners, visitors and passers-by, at St. Paul's Episcopal Church, 520 Summit St., Winston-Salem, NC 27101.
