Vincent A. ‘Vince’ LaQua, 85

Vincent A. “Vince” LaQua, 85, Hankinson, N.D., formerly of Fessenden, N.D., died Saturday, Nov. 26, 2011 at his home.

The funeral Mass will be held at 12 p.m. Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2011 at St. Philip’s Catholic Church in Hankinson. Interment will be at Calvary Cemetery in Hankinson.

Visitation will be held from 2-6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 29, 2011 at Nelson Funeral Home in Fessenden. A second visitation will be held from 8:30-11 a.m.Wednesday, Nov. 30, 2011 at St. Philip’s Catholic Church in Hankinson followed by an 11 a.m. rosary service and time of sharing.

The son of Frank and Anna (Kinn) LaQua, Vincent was born Dec. 4, 1925 in Hankinson, where he grew up and attended elementary and high school at St. Francis Academy. At age 17, Vincent enlisted in the U.S.. Navy, following his brother into the service during World War II. Following his honorable discharge in 1946, Vincent completed high school and then attended the North Dakota State College of Science, where he boxed for his cousin, coach George Brackin. He was inducted into the NDSCS Athletic Hall of Fame following a successful golden gloves boxing career. Vincent was admitted into the University of North Dakota School of Law in Grand Forks, N.D.

In 1951 he married Ethel Slominski. They had three children, Renee, Frank and Vincent Jr. In 1954, following his graduation from the UND School of Law, Vincent began his legal career as the assistant state’s attorney of Logan County in Napoleon, N.D. On Aug. 1, 1955 Vincent entered law practice with John A. Layne in Fessenden. Vincent was first elected as Wells County state’s attorney in 1956 and served in that capacity until 1975.In 1962, Ethel passed away.

In 1964, Vincent married Betty Shook Burns, who brought her daughter, Debra, into the LaQua family. In 1965, Michael was born to Betty and Vincent. Betty passed away in 1988. In June of 1979, Vincent was appointed to complete the unexpired state’s attorney term. He was re-elected and served as Wells County state’s attorney until 1992.

On Aug. 19, 1991 Vincent married Beth Mourer Reinke. After serving 31 years as Wells County state’s attorney, Vincent retired Dec. 31, 1992. During the years he practiced law in Fessenden, he also served as city attorney for Fessenden, Bowdon, Cathay, Hamberg, Hurdsfield, and Sykeston, N.D. He also was legal council for the Wells County Water Resources Board.

Since his retirement, Vincent resided in his hometown of Hankinson with Beth. He was a member of St. Philip’s Catholic Church in Hankinson. In addition to his family, friends, church and the law, Vincent had many interests he pursued with a passion. He was known for his amazing gardens and for canning tomatoes and other vegetables, which he shared with family and friends. He loved to fish and hunt, bake bread and pies and make his own deer sausage.

Vincent is survived by his wife, Beth LaQua; children: Renee (Michael) Rott, Milwaukee, Wisc., Debra LaQua (Mynders Glover), Durango, Colo., Frank (Darlene) LaQua, Bismarck, N.D., Michael (Lynette) LaQua, Mosinee, Wisc., Mary Beth Reinke, Bloomington, Minn., Tim (Jean) Reinke, Hankinson, Paul (Jana) Reinke, Hickson, N.D., Patrick (Bree) Reinke, Hickson and Kathleen (Curt) Lingen, Hickson; 18 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

Vincent was preceded in death by his parents, Frank and Anna LaQua; wives, Ethel and Betty LaQua; brother, John (Marlys) LaQua; and infant son, Vincent Jr.

Nelson Funeral Home in Fessendon is in charge of the arrangements.

Barbara Berry, 75

Barbara Berry, 75, Huntsville, Ala., died Thursday, Nov. 24, 2011 at the Huntsville Hospital of respiratory failure.

She was born in Wahpeton, N.D., daughter of Olaf and Elizabeth “Betty” Myhra. A graduate of St. John’s Catholic Grade School and Wahpeton high School, at age 17 she immediately enrolled and graduated with honors from the Sisters of Joseph’s School of Nursing, University of North Dakota, Grand Forks, N.D.

Upon completing her nursing degree, she moved to El Paso, Texas.

She married the late Ray Berry, a pioneering rocket guidance scientist on a series of solid fuel military rockets with the Douglas Aircraft Corporation.

Barbara is survived by one daughter, Kristen Atwell, Huntsville; and three sons: Michael Berry, Huntsville, Timothy and Gabriel Berry, both of California; one sister, Mary Joan Delisle, East Grand Forks, Minn. and Englewood, Fla.; and two brothers, James Myhra, Hermitage, Pa., and David Myhra, PhD, Fort Myers, Fla.

Sister M. Elizabeth Klein, 95

Sister M. Elizabeth, (Irene Carolyn) Klein, OSF, 95, Hankinson, N.D., died peacefully Monday, Nov. 21 at St. Francis Healthcare Campus, Breckenridge, Minn.

The funeral Mass of Christian burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 26, 2011 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Chapel, St. Francis Convent, Hankinson. Burial will be in St. Francis Convent Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 2-4 p.m. Friday, Nov. 25, 2011 with a 7 p.m. prayer service at Immaculate Heart of Mary Chapel, St. Francis Convent, Hankinson.

Sister Elizabeth was born in Collegeville, Minn., to George and Theresa (Meyer) Klein on April 2, 1916. She was the fourth oldest child of 13 children. Beginning with grade four, Sister Elizabeth attended St. John’s Elementary School in Collegeville. She attended high school at St. Francis Academy in Hankinson. Following graduation from high school, she entered the order of St. Francis and began her religious life with the Dillingen Franciscan Sisters, in Hankinson. She entered the novitiate Aug. 11, 1934. Her first profession of vows took place Aug. 12, 1935 and her perpetual profession of vows took place Aug. 16, 1938.

Sister Elizabeth attended Dickinson State Teachers’ College and received a certificate in elementary education. During the years, from December 1937 to January 1946, Sister Elizabeth taught grades 1-4 in Hankinson, Mantador and Rugby, N.D. In January 1946 Sister studied music at Alverno College, Milwaukee, Wisc. She received her bachelors degree in music education from Alverno College in 1948. During two summers she attended the DePaul University in Chicago, Ill., and ongoing studies at University of North Dakota in Grand Forks which applied toward a master’s degree.

Sister Elizabeth taught music in the schools at Mantador, Rugby, Wahpeton, Grand Forks, Rutland, and Wyndmere, N.D., as well as St. Francis Academy, Hankinson. Sister Elizabeth also taught private lessons in piano, voice and guitar. From 1975-1995 Sister Elizabeth continued to teach private lessons in Hankinson and directed the St. Francis Convent choir in liturgical music.

Sister Elizabeth is survived by her Franciscan Community of Sisters, Hankinson; three brothers: David (Elaine) Klein, St. Cloud, Minn., Hubert Klein, St. Joseph, Minn., and Gerard (Molly) Klein; three sisters; Gisela Crowe, Clara Therrien, St. Paul, Minn., and Othilia (Roger) Sauerer, St. Paul; a brother-in-law, Henry Rand, DeGraff, Minn.; and numerous nieces, nephews, grand and great-nieces and nephews.

Sister Elizabeth was preceded in death by her parents, George and Theresa Klein; her brothers, Roman, Leander, Wilfred, and Verner Klein; her sisters, Magdalen Schmitt and Viola Rand; her brothers-in-law, Leonard Schmitt, Robert Crowe and Melvin Therrien; and her sisters-in-law: Lucille Klein, Ludvina Klein, Pauline Klein and Claudette Klein.

Frank Family Funeral Home in Hankinson is in charge of the arrangements.

Phyllis M. Lee, 93

Phyllis M. Lee, 93, New Rockford, N.D., formerly of Wahpeton, N.D., and Fargo, N.D., died Wednesday, Feb. 1, 2012 at the Lutheran Home of The Good Shepherd, New Rockford.

The funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, 2012 at Bethel Lutheran Church, Wahpeton, with the Rev. Jim Gustafson officiating. Interment will be at Fairview Memorial Gardens, Wahpeton.

Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.

Phyllis Hatlie was born March 21, 1918 on a farm near Abercrombie, N.D., to Ole and Grace (Larson) Hatlie.

She was united in marriage to Arthur Lee Sept. 3, 1938 on a Labor Day weekend, while Art was at Dakota Business College and she was working at Hanoek’s Fur Store in Fargo. Art passed away at 58 years of age in 1975.

Phyllis was briefly married to Leslie Leason in Mesa, Ariz., until his death.

One of Phyllis’ joys was working retail, first at Farlow’s Ladies Ready-to-Wear and later opening her own Scandinavian shop, Prairie Galleries in Wahpeton. After Art’s death, Phyllis moved to Fargo and ran the Nordic Butikk with partner Daryl “Ole” Olson and worked into her 80s at the Hjemkomst Heritage Gift Shop in Moorhead, Minn.

Extremely proud of her Norwegian heritage, Phyllis made many trips to Norway and was an active member of the Sons of Norway in Fargo. Art and Phyllis were members of Bethel Lutheran Church in Wahpeton for more than 30 years. In later years, Phyllis joined Faith Lutheran in West Fargo, N.D., First Lutheran in Fargo, and lastly First Lutheran in New Rockford.

Phyllis is survived by a son, Levert (Margaret) Lee, Strasburg, Colo.; a daughter, Anise (Donald) Lee-Dahlquist, New Rockford; a daughter-in-law, Judy Lee, West Fargo; her grandsons, Eric (Kelli) Borgen, Boise, Idaho, Jon (Billie Jean) Lee, Plano, Texas, Derek Lee, Strasburg; her granddaughters, Sonya (Bob) Borgen, New Rockford, Sonja Dahlquist, St. Paul, Minn., Maren (Joseph) Matal, Bethesda, Md., Melany (Robb) Wolcott, Denver, Colo.; her great-grandchildren, Sarah Borgen, Manhattan Peters, Linnea Dahlquist, Sophia Borgen, Austin Lee, Winter Lee, Jocelyn Wolcott, Taryn Wolcott, Owen Wolcott, John Matal, Elizabeth Matal, and Margaret Matal; her great-great-granddaughter, Lillian Anise Peters.

Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents, Ole and Grace Hatlie; her husbands, Arthur Lee and Leslie Leason; and her oldest son, Duane Lee.

In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred to the charity of your choice.

Arrangements are entrusted to Vertin-Munson Funeral Home, Wahpeton.

Barbara Wohlwend

Barbara Jean (Bateman) Wohlwend, 82 passed away Saturday May 2, 2015 at the Four Seasons Health Care Center in Foreman, North Dakota. Barbara was born September 27, 1932 and was the foster-daughter of Clarence and Hattie Bateman.

Barbara married Louis Wohlwend on September 25, 1950 in Wahpeton, North Dakota. After their marriage Barbara settled down to being a farmer’s wife, and went on to have 6 children. In later years she was caregiver for the Catholic Nuns of Hankinson. She did numerous volunteer works for which she received several awards. Barbara loved to read, play cards, and spend time with friends at Dakota Estates. She was a woman of faith who believed in the resurrection of the dead as promised by Jesus Christ. She enjoyed fellowship with all believers. Her life of service testified of her faith and her fellowship will be missed by many.

Barbara was preceded in death by her husband Louis and two sons, Richard and Wayne. Barbara is survived by sons: Roger (Jennifer) Wohlwend of Toledo, Ohio, Leo (Barbara) Wohlwend of Waynesville, Missouri and Clayton Wohlwend. Daughter: JoAnne (Greg) Williams of Gold Creek, Montana. Grandchildren: Melissa (Ryan) Buckland, Rachel (Shannon) Earley, Paul Wohlwend, Leah (Ryan) Quinn, Wayne Williams, Julie (Robert) Lane, David (Mindy) Williams, Deserae (Donald) Anderson, and Michael Wohlwend. Great-Grandchildren: Quinton, Colter, and Kelby Williams; Westin and Tristin Williams; and Annika Quinn. Step-sister: Dorothy Sperling of Fergus Falls and Dorothy’s children: Doug (Marsha) Sperling of Dalton, Diana (Bruce) Richards of Denver, Colorado and David (Carol) Sperling of Big Lake, Minnesota.

The family wishes to extend a special thank you to Dakota Estates in Lidgerwood for their many years of service. We also wish to acknowledge Four Seasons of Foreman, CHP Hospice of Wahpeton for keeping Barbara comfortable in her finals days and the Frank funeral home staff for their assistance.

The Frank Funeral Home is assisting the family. A memorial gathering is planned at Dakota Estates in Lidgerwood on May 30th 2015 from 1-3 PM. All are welcome.
