Harlynn Arthur Buss
Funeral services for Harlynn Arthur “Art” Buss, 20, Indianapolis, Ind. were held on Wednesday, September 26, 2001 in Little and Sons Funeral Home, Indianapolis. Mr. Buss died on Saturday, September 22, 2001 in his home.
Harlynn Arthur Buss, son of Art and Adeline (Weig) Buss, was born on May 29, 1931 in Sheldon. He graduated from Sheldon High School in 1949. After graduation, he spent some time in Indianapolis.
In 1950, he married Joyce Brannon in Indianapolis. They returned to Sheldon where they farmed until 1961. At that time, Harlynn became a professional truck driver for Berger Allied Van Lines until retiring in 1998. He was presently employed by Celadon Trucking Service of Indianapolis. Harlynn was great baseball fan and played with the Enderlin American Legion team and the Sheldon Independent team in the 1950s and early 1960s.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce Buss, Indianapolis; two sons, Robert (Linda) Buss, Garden Grove, Calif. and Douglas (Connie) Buss, Salem, Ark.; two daughters, Beverly Beaver, Salem, Ark., and Pamela Buss, Indianapolis; one brother, Doyle (Prudence) Buss, Chupei City, Taiwan; one sister, Carol (Jim) Oelke, Cedar Rapids, Iowa; six grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Little and Sons Funeral Home, Indianapolis, were in charge of the arrangements.

Frances Hanson
Funeral services for Frances Hanson, 84, Hatton, N.D., were held on Saturday, September 29, 2001 at Finley Lutheran Church, Finley, N.D. Reverend Darrel Olson and Phyllis Olson officiated. Mrs. Hanson died Wednesday, September 26, 2001 at Innovis Hospital, Fargo.
Frances Mastrud, daughter of Severt and Ida (Thorstad) Mastrud, was born on June 5, 1917 in Hatton. She grew up and attended and school in Hatton, graduating from Hatton High School.
On September 3, 1938, she married Trygve Hanson in Hatton. The couple moved to Lisbon in 1939, where they were engaged in farming. They moved to Finley in 1949 and continued to farm until 1962 when they moved into Finley. They owned and operated Tryg’s Tavern until retiring in 1983. Tryg died September 25, 1995. Frances continued to make her home in Finley until January 1998 when she became a resident of the Tri-County Nursing Home in Hatton.
She is survived by two sons, Thaine (Dorothy) Hanson, Finley, and Steve (Carol) Hanson, Fargo; two daughters, Bev Devlin and Becky Amundson, both of Finley; ten grandchildren; twelve great-grandchildren; one great-great granddaughter; two sisters, Doris Tveten, Hatton, and Myrtle Moen, Mayville. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Trygve Hanson; one daughter, Faye Kilgore; one grandson, Ronnie Thompson; five brothers and four sisters.
Pallbearers for the funeral were Larry Amundson, Bert Hanson, Don Kilgore, Leslie Mastrud, Cecil Sundeen, Truman Hanson, Allan Hanson and Larry Johnson. Honorary pallbearers were her grandchildren.
Music was provided by Bobbie Ostmo and organist Maribel Ostmo.
Interment at Finley Cemetery, Finley.
Quam-Plaistad-Cushman Funeral Home, Finley, N.D., was in charge of arrangements.

Mary Pederson
Funeral services for Mary Pederson, 95, Fargo, were held on Tuesday, October 2, 2001 at Wright Funeral Chapel, Moorhead. Pastor Bruce Noennig officiated. Mrs. Pederson died Friday, September 28, 2001 at Eventide Lutheran Home, Fargo.
Mary Hagen, daughter of Mads and Mina (Hensvold) Hagen, was born February 19, 1906 in Kathryn. She grew up and attended school at Valley City.
On July 14, 1924, she married Palmer C. Pederson in Pelican Rapids, Minn. where they lived before moving to a farm near Buxton, N.D. They moved to Casselton in 1952. Palmer died in 1963 and Mary moved to Eventide Lutheran Home in 1986.
She is survived by two sons, Larry (Linda) Pederson, Moorhead, and Donald (Sue) Pederson, Bellflower, Calif.; 16 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers for the funeral were Ken Habiger, Roger Hagen, Mary Kentel, Don Larsen, Ronnie Olson and Don Pederson. Honorary pallbearers were Mike Pederson and Larry A. Pederson.
Music was provided by organist Margery Possehl and soloist David Hamilton.
Interment at Bethel Lutheran Cemetery, Pelican Rapids, Minn.
Wright Funeral Home, Moorhead, was in charge of arrangements.

Alice O. (Allison) Knapp
Funeral services for Alice O. Knapp, 93, Lewistown, Mont., were held on Thursday, September 27, 2001 at Zion Lutheran Church, Lewistown. Mrs. Knapp died Sunday, September 23, 2001 at the Central Montana Medical Center, Lewistown.
Alice O. Ruud, daughter of Kristian and Mina Ruud, was born on June 21, 1908 in Lisbon. She received her education in Lisbon and then attended and graduated from Valley City State Teachers College in Valley City. She then taught elementary school in North Dakota until moving to Montana in 1941. She taught second grade at Highland Park Elementary School from 1941 until retiring in 1973.
On June 7, 1949, she married J. Ennis Allison in Lewistown. He preceded her in death in 1973.
On May 7, 1977, she married Claire Knapp in Moorhead. They made their home in Lewistown until his death in 1990. She continued to live in Lewistown until her death. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and the Sons of Norway.
She is survived by one stepson, Thomas Knapp, Apache Junction, Ariz.; one stepdaughter, Marjorie Johnson, Milnor; one brother-in-law, Ed Kraftenberg, Lewistown, Mont.; one sister-in-law, Marjorie Ruud, Lisbon; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her son, Jerome Allison, one stepdaughter, one brother, one sister and her parents.
Interment at Central Montana Memorial Gardens, Lewistown.
Cloyd Funeral Home, Lewistown, Mont., was in charge of arrangements.

Darrold B. Hahn
Funeral services for Darrold B. Hahn, 78, Enderlin, were held on Monday, October 2, 2001 at St. John Lutheran Church, Embden. Reverend John Flaa officiated. Mr. Hahn died Thursday, September 27, 2001 in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.
Darrold B. Hahn, was born on January 9, 1923 in Embden. He was raised and attended schools in the Leonard and Sheldon area. He moved to West Fargo in 1937 and worked as a carpenter. He served in the U.S. Army from 1945-1946.
On January 27, 1946, he married Lorraine E. Luther at Embden. They farmed in the Alice and Enderlin area until he retired. They remained on the farm until the present.
He is survived by his wife, Lorraine Hahn, Enderlin; one son, Ray (Joy) Hahn, Lake Park, Minn.; one daughter, Janice (Stuart) Syverson, West Fargo; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
Pallbearers for the funeral were LeRoy Otteson, Danny Luther, Gary Luther, Tim Luther, Duane Luther and Robert Lemna.
Music was provided by organist John Burnham, soloist William Schossow and accompanist Alvin Johnson.
Interment at St. John Cemetery, Embden.
West Funeral Home, West Fargo, was in charge of arrangements.

Lyle W. Mashek
Funeral services for Lyle W. Mashek, 83, rural Wyndmere, were held on Wednesday, October 3, 2001 at Wyndmere Lutheran Church, Wyndmere. Reverend Jack Carlson officiated. Mr. Mashek died Saturday, September 29, 2001 at his farm home.
Lyle Walter Mashek, son of Louis and Eva (Olson) Mashek, was born on January 5, 1918 at rural Wyndmere. He grew up on the family farm and attended school, both in West End Township, rural Wyndmere. He lived and worked on his farm all his life with the exception of when he entered the U.S. Navy as a member of America’s WWII “Greatest Generation”. He served in the Navy from 1944 to 1946 aboard the USS General Callan, a WWII Troop ship that carried thousands of men to and from the various theaters of war around the world. He joined the Callan on her maiden voyage in September 1944 and traveled to the Marianas and Marshall Islands in the Pacific. He served with his shipmaster to New Guinea, Pearl Harbor, Guam, Australia, India, Ceylon, Saipan, France, Egypt, Singapore and the Philippines. The Callan carried 2000 American Prisoners of War from Tokyo, Japan at the end of the war. Lyle was a lifetime member of the VFW Post No. 9067, McLeod. He served 25 years as the Quartermaster for the post.
On February 7, 1958, he married Sylvia Jordheim Johnson. Sylvia passed away on May 1, 1999.
He is survived by one daughter, Barbara Stokke, Aliso Viejo, Calif.; one granddaughter; two great-grandchildren; three brothers, Harold Mashek, James “Mike” (Barbara) Mashek, all of Wyndmere, and Edward (Vivian) Mashek, Fargo; two sisters, Doris (Adin) Helgeson, Bismarck, and Edith Jordheim, McLeod; four half-sisters, Carol (T.J.) Spale, Grafton, Helen (Raymond) Novotny, Lidgerwood, Beverly (Duane) Huus, Emerick, and Jeannette Froslie, Chula Vista, Calif. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Sylvia Mashek; and his half-brother, Harlan Mashek.
Military Honors will be conducted by the VFW Post No. 9067, McLeod, and the American Legion Brown-Nelson Post No. 153 “Sons of American Legion”.
Interment at Elk Creek Cemetery, rural Wyndmere.

Robert H. Fahlsing
Funeral services for Robert H. Fahlsing, 93, Midland, Mich., were held on Thursday, October 4, 2001 at Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Chapel, Midland, Mich. Reverend Ira Bush officiated. Mr. Fahlsing died Monday, October 1, 2001 at Brittany Manor, Midland.
Robert H. Fahlsing, son of the late Fred and Minnie (Waltke) Fahlsing, was born October 15, 1907 in Lisbon. He was raised and educated in Lisbon and resided in Lisbon until 1940, While in Lisbon, he farmed and also bought and sold livestock.
On November 26, 1940, he married Dorothy Weiler, also of Lisbon. They moved to Milford, Mich., where Bob worked as a house painter for a short time before moving to Midland. He worked in the Security Department at the The Dow Chemical Company, retiring in 1966 after 25 years of service. During his early retirement years, Bob did yard work for various people in the Midland area. He was a former member of the Midland Elks Club and the Midland Moose Club.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy; two sons, Robert (Ruth) Fahlsing, Midland, Mich., and Ronald (Penny) Fahlsing, Bay City, Mich.; one daughter, Phyllis (Lynn) Schultz, Sanford, Mich.; nine grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by four sisters and four brothers.
Interment at Midland Memorial Gardens, Midland.
Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Chapel, Midland, Mich., was in charge of arrangements.

Verdean Engen
Funeral services for Verdean Engen, 51, Tolna, N.D., were held on Tuesday, October 2, 2001 at the American Lutheran Church, Tolna. Mrs. Engen died Tuesday, September 25, 2001 at the Royal University Hospital in Saskatoon.
Verdean Berg, daughter of Elmer and Bernice (Styve) Berg, was born on November 15, 1949 in McVille, N.D. She grew up and was educated in McVille, graduating from McVille High School in 1967. After graduation, she worked at the Farmers and Merchants State Bank in Tolna.
On September 26, 1969 she married Randy Engen in El Paso, Tex. Verdean and Randy started the Lawrence Bay Lodge in 1971. The Lodge is a fly-in fishing and hunting camp on Reindeer Lake in Saskatchewan. Verdean and Randy have owned and operated the lodge since 1971, spending May through the end of September at the lodge and then returning to Tolna during the remaining months. Verdean was a member of the American Lutheran Church and the WELCA, also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
She is survived by her husband, Randy Engen, Tolna; one son, Phillip Engen, Tolna; one daughter, Mindy Engen, Valley City; six brothers, Norval (Judi) Berg, Gwinner, Elmer Bruce (Louise) Berg, Brodhead, Wisc., Wallace (Carol) Berg, Fargo, Frayne Berg, Lakota, Brian (Barbara) Berg, Fargo, and Randall Berg, McVille; six sisters, Eloise (Charles) Wahl, Fergus Falls, Minn., Gloria (Clayton) Brennan, West Fargo, Louise (Eugene) Workman, Fargo, Sonja (Michael) Donohue, Tolna, Norene (Douglas) Reiten, Grand Forks, and Juanita (Robert) Gutting, Mapleton, N.D.
Pallbearers for the funeral were Verdean’s brothers and honorary pallbearers were Verdean’s sisters.
Interment at the Tolna Cemetery, Tolna.

F. Douglas Fredrickson, 60, Lisbon, died Wednesday, October 10, 2001 in Lisbon Medical Center. (Armstrong, Lisbon).
