R. Lyle Creswell
Funeral services for R. Lyle Creswell, 64, Enderlin, were held on Monday, July 8, 2002 at First Lutheran Church, Enderlin. Reverend Leon Zavadil officiated. Mr. Creswell died Tuesday, July 2, 2002.
R. Lyle Creswell, son of Ross and Emma (Trapp) Creswell was born on September 25, 1937 in Fargo. He attended school in Enderlin. Lyle served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War and Viet Nam War.
On November 19, 1963, he married Sharon Arne in Enderlin. They lived in Harvey, where Lyle worked for the railroad. In 1974 they moved to Enderlin, where Lyle continued to work for the railroad. He was a member of the Enderlin VFW.
He is survived by one son, Craig Creswell, Enderlin; two daughters, Tracey (Daniel) Erickson, Willmar, Minn. and Alise (Dylan) Camfield, Albuquerque, N.M.; five grandchildren; and two brothers, Kenneth Creswell, Valley City, and Rodney (Monica) Creswell, Bismarck. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sharon Creswell, who died May 9, 1992.
Pallbearers for the funeral were Danny Creswell, Todd Creswell, Larry Muth, Curtis Muth, Roger Muth, and Keith Muth.
Music was provided by organist Shirley Hanson.
Interment at Enderlin Cemetery, Enderlin.
Armstrong Funeral Home, Enderlin, was in charge of arrangements.

Orley E. Peterson
Funeral services for Orley E. Peterson, 72, Lisbon, were held on Tuesday, July 9, 2002 at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Valley City. Pastor Paul Husa and Pastor Mark Ostgarden officiated. Mr. Peterson died Saturday, July 6, 2002.
Orley Emil Peterson, son of Emil and Ida (Kulsrud) Peterson was born on November 18, 1929, near Litchville. He attended grade school near Litchville. He later moved with his family to Valley City where he attended high school. He served in the National Guard from 1947 to 1948. Orley was drafted in 1951 and served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was stationed in Alaska. He was discharged in 1953. He returned to Valley City and worked for area farmers. He was a life member of the American Legion Post #60. He moved to the N.D. Veterans Home, Lisbon, on January 12, 1985.
He is survived by one sister, Myrna Botner and one brother, Herbert Peterson, both of Valley City; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and two brothers.
Interment at North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, Mandan.

Lars Hegseth
Funeral services for Lars Hegseth, 87, Wyndmere, were held on Wednesday, July 10 at United Free Lutheran Church, rural McLeod. Reverend John Abel officiated. Mr. Hegseth died July 6, 2002 at St. Catherine’s Living Center, Wahpeton.
Lars Hegseth, son of Fredrick and Annie (Sylte) Hegseth was born on December 15, 1914 at Garborg Township, rural Wyndmere. He received his formal education at rural Wyndmere.
On May 2, 1948, he married Alma Breden at the Zion Lutheran Church, rural Leonard. The couple farmed in Garborg Township, rural Wyndmere until their retirement. Alma died on December 2, 1997. He resided at St. Catherine’s Living Center since November 1999. He was an active member of United Free Lutheran Church.
He is survived by two sons, Larry Hegseth, Wyndmere and Loren (Tammy) Hegseth, Wyndmere; three daughters, Lois (David) Hoover, Cando, N.D., Lila Hegseth, Tyler, Tex., and Leanne (Bob)Osgood, Fort Worth, Tex.; 11 grandchildren; and one sister, Florence Tingum, Walcott. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Alma Hegseth, three sister, Mollie, Gina, Inga, and four brothers, Ragnvald, Andrew, Olaf and an infant, Anders.
Interment at Nordmanna Cemetery, Rural McLeod.

Leonard E. Burkland
Funeral services for Leonard E. Burkland, 87, Lakota, were held on Monday, July 8, 2002 at United Church of Christ, Lakota. Reverend Sue Mackey officiated. Mr. died Thursday, July 4, 2002 at the Lakota Good Samaritan Center.
Leonard Edwin Burkland, son of Oscar and Sara (Berg) Burkland was born on January 26, 1915 on the family farm in Wamduska Township, Nelson County, N.D. He was raised on the farm and attended township schools and McVille Public School. Following his education, he took over operation of the family farm.
On January 18, 1947 he married June L. Belyea at Bemidji, Minn. They farmed and raised their family there until 1993, when they moved to Lakota. Leonard became a resident of the Good Samaritan Center, on July 2, 2002.
He is survived by his wife, June Burkland, Lakota, four daughters, Connie (Michael) Hayden, West Fargo, Cheryl (Clinton) Hageberg, Lisbon, Sandra (Loren) Messner, Fargo, and Patricia (David) Peterson, West Fargo; eight grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one brother, Verdun (Evelyn) Burkland, Grand Forks, his mother-in-law, Lois Medaris, Fargo. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Rudolph Burkland and Milton Burkland; four sisters, Hazel Graftaas, Mayme Brackett, Lillian Espenson and infant Amy; and two grandchildren, Derrick Hayden and Kelsey Peterson.
Pallbearers for the funeral were Ronda Hageberg, Darren Hayden, Chad Hageberg, Shannon Ruen, Jason Peterson, Christopher Hayden, Jennifer Peterson, Michelle Hayden, Eric Brace, Megan Ruen and Jackson Hayden.
Music was provided by organist Ellen Pederson and soloist Jason Flom.
Interment at Lakota Cemetery.
Aaker Funeral Home, Lakota, was in charge of arrangements.

Lee Anderson
Funeral services for Lee Anderson, 19, Edgeley, were held on Wednesday, July 10, 2002 at Transfiguration Catholic Church, Edgeley. Mr. Anderson died Sunday, July 7, 2002 near Edgeley from injuries due to a car accident.
Lee Roger Anderson, son of Roger and Meleia (Carow) Anderson was born on August 25, 1982 at Jamestown Hospital, Jamestown. He graduated from Edgeley High School in 2001. He was employed at Berlin Farmers Elevator, Berlin, N.D.
He is survived by his parents, Roger and Meleia Anderson, Edgeley; one brother Alan, Edgeley; one sister Amy (Randy) Boyer, Edgeley; grandparents Cliff and Sylvia Carow, Edgeley and Mary Jane Anderson, Edgeley. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, William (Bill) Anderson.
Interment at Mount Calvary Cemetery, Edgeley.
Lisko Funeral Chapel, Edgeley, was in charge of arrangements.

Opal Horvath
A graveside service for Opal Horvath, 87, Yuma, Ariz., formerly of Enderlin, was held on Monday, July 8, 2002 at Sunset Memorial Gardens, Fargo. She died on March 28, 2002 in a Minot nursing home.

Ralph R. Mangnall
Funeral services for Ralph R. Mangnall, 74, Oakes, were held on Thursday, July 11, 2002 at Grace Lutheran Church, Oakes. Reverend Harvey Pedersen officiated. Mr. Mangnall died on Sunday, July 7, 2002.
Ralph Richard Mangnall, son of William and Carrie (Christenson) Mangnall, was born on January 9, 1928 in Mildred, Mont. At the age of 12, he moved with his family to Oakes where he has made his home, except for three years while he taught high school in the Verona area. Ralph began school in Montana and graduated from high school in Oakes. He then attended Ellendale State Normal and Industrial College and Valley City State Teachers College. He obtained a professional banking credential from the Colorado School of Banking in Boulder, Colo.
On June 4, 1950, he married Marcella Ferch in Verona. He began working for First National Bank, Oakes, in 1949 and was employed there for 43 years. He began as a teller and retired in 1993 as the senior vice president. He also served as one of the directors of the bank. He served on the boards of Oakes School, Oakes Park Board, The Good Samaritan Center, Oakes Community Hospital, Oakes Enhancement, and the Oakes Professional Group. He also served as an officer for the Oakes Centennial Association, the Alumni Association, Dickey County Historical Society, Ludden Sportsman Club, the Lions Club and Lutheran Brotherhood. He received the Outstanding Distinguished Service Award from the city of Oakes and the ND Community Leadership Award from the Greater North Dakota Association. In 1984, he was initiated into “Who’s Who in North Dakota.” In 1982, Ralph was chosen as the outstanding alumni and in 1999, he received the Outstanding Senior Citizen award for the state of North Dakota. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church, Oakes.
He is survived by his wife, Marcella Mangnall, Oakes; one son, Richard (Jacqueline) Mangnall, Jamestown; one daughter, Paula (Paul Jr.) Perez, Fargo; four grandsons; one brother, William (Mary Lou) Mangnall, Chandler, Ariz.; and two sisters, Mary Lou (Robert) Dieterich, Modesto, Calif., and Annabelle (Donald) McDowell, Fort Myers, Fla. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, George Mangnall.
Pallbearers for the funeral were Don Kapfer, Steph McLean, Paul Lindell, Brad Burris, Terry Mangnall and Marv Hein. Honorary pallbearers were Frosty Renier, Frank Larson, Ray Hankel and Ray Schnell.
Music was provided by organist Julie Mangnall and soloist Jacqueline Mangnall.
Interment at Oakes View Cemetery.

Gordon E. Stangeland
Funeral services for Gordon E. Stangeland, 74, Moorhead, Minn., were held on Thursday, July 11, 2002 at Pontoppidan Lutheran Church, Fargo. Mr. Stangeland died at his home on Sunday, July 7.
Gordon Eugene Stangeland, son of Inghart and Pearle (Olson) Stangeland, was born on November 16, 1927 in Fargo. He grew up in rural Moorhead, attending Oakmound School and Moorhead High School, graduating in 1945. Gordon joined the Navy in 1946, training at Great Lakes, Ill. and moving to New London, Conn. for submarine training. Gordon served aboard the submarine U.S.S. Ronquil as a cook with the Pacific Fleet before he was honorably discharged in 1947. He returned to the area and began working in the grain business, starting at Kragness, Minn.
On June 20, 1952, he married Berta (Bert) Olerud in Harwood. Gordon managed grain elevators in Hawley, Springfield and Fergus Falls, Minn. and Enderlin, working for 37 years before he retired. He was a member of the VFW for over 50 years, the American Legion, the Sons of Norway and both the N.D. and Minn. Grain Dealers Associations. He served on the Hawley, Minn. City Council, was a volunteer fireman in Hawley and was involved with the yearly Hawley Rodeo Committee. He was a member of Pontoppidan Lutheran Church, Fargo.
He is survived by his wife, Bert Stangeland, Moorhead; two daughters, Jane (Larry) Bratsch, New London, Minn., and Julie Speck, Richland, Wash.; two sons, Thomas (Cherrish) Stangeland, Post Falls, Idaho, and Peter (Cheri) Stangeland, Fargo; six grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; two brothers, Arlan (Ginny) Stangeland, Pelican Rapids, Minn., and Loren (Vivian) Stangeland, Richland, Wash.; and one sister, Sonja Diehl, Hillsboro. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Interment at Oakwood Cemetery, Harwood.

Alicia Morris
Funeral services for Alicia Morris, 19, Bismarck, were held on Friday, July 12, 2002 at Zion Lutheran Church, Bismarck. Reverend Dr. Bradley R. Stoltenow officiated. Miss Morris died on Sunday, July 7, 2002 in Fargo.
Alicia Morris was born on December 24, 1982 at Fargo. She was raised in Fargo and in Bismarck where she attended Wachter Middle School and graduated from Bismarck High School in 2001. She worked at Pizza Hut and Carmike Theaters. She attended NDSU.
She is survived by her mother, Mona and her fiance, Gene, Bismarck; three sisters, Kimberly (Paul) Carey, Fargo, Kari and Sarah, Bismarck; one brother, Chris, Bismarck; her fathers, Tim Morris, Fargo, and Clarence Baumgartner, West Fargo; grandparents, Ray and Melody Tangwall, Aberdeen, Barb and Duane Dahl, Watertown, Barbara Baumgartner, Linton and Bertha Morris, Fargo; great-grandparents, Crystal and Fran Meyer, Lisbon; one niece; many aunts, uncles, cousins and friends.
Interment at St. Mary’s Cemetery, Bismarck.
Eastgate Funeral Service, Bismarck, was in charge of arrangements.
