Ralph E. DeGrand
Funeral services for Ralph E. DeGrand, Enderlin, were held on Tuesday, January 21, 2003 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Enderlin. Reverend Mike Toomey officiated. Mr. DeGrand died on Saturday, January 18, 2003 at Lisbon Area Health Services Hospital, Lisbon.
Ralph E. DeGrand, son of Desire and Olive (Roahr) DeGrand, was born March 6, 1925 in Green Bay, Wis. He attended school in Pembina, Wis. He served in the U.S. Army from 1943-1945.
On November 15, 1946, he married Elaine Hauge in Moorhead, Minn. Ralph worked for the Soo Line Railroad for 47 years. They lived in Enderlin and Devils Lake where he also owned Elaine’s Mobile Homes. They moved to Fargo, Fordville, and returned to Enderlin where he built a motel, DeGrand’s Rooms. He retired and moved to Fargo. He became a resident of Maryhill Manor, Enderlin, in August 1997. He was a member of the American Legion, Enderlin, and the Eagles in Fargo.
He is survived by one son, Steven (Mary) DeGrand, Roch-ester, Minn.; three daughters, Sandy Daniels, Minneapolis, Susan Lee, Enderlin, and Sharon (Ron) Rusness, West Fargo; seven grandchildren; three sisters, Joyce (Ace) Bowen, Sioux Falls, S.D., Rosalie Hopp, Sioux Falls, S.D., and Charlotte (Caustron) Wantner, Chicago, Ill.; and three brothers, Wayne (Judy) Schillerstrom, Iron Mountain, Mich., Carl (Doloris Schillerstrom, Neenah, Wis., and Jerry (Pam) Schillerstrom, Sioux Falls, S.D. He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife, Elaine Degrand, who died in 1981.
Pallbearers for the funeral were Steven DeGrand, Christopher DeGrand, Brandon Lee, Derek Kjaer, Mike Crawford and Rick Lee. Honorary pallbearers were his granddaughters.
Music was provided by organist Cindy Hagel and soloist Bobby Geske.
Interment at Freeman Cemetery, McLeod.

Viola M. Schmolke
Funeral services for Viola Magdalene (Martinson) Schmolke, 76, Crosslake, Minn., were held on Thursday, January 23, 2003 at Our Lady of Grace Catholic Church, Edina, Minn. Mrs. Schmolke died on Monday, January 20, 2003 after a courageous battle with cancer.
Viola Nelson, daughter of Elida and Nels Nelson, was born in Fort Ransom. After her mother’s death she was raised by Betsey and Henry Martinson. She lived in Fort Ransom until she attended nurse’s training after high school graduation. Following nurse’s training, she lived in Minneapolis until retirement.
She is survived by her husband, Celestine Schmolke; two sons, Ronald (Becky) Schmolke and David (Julie) Schmolke; five daughters, Linda (Michael) Soukup, Laura (Frank) Ringsmuth, Rita (Tom) Savoy, Nancy (Jason) Martinez, and Donna Ramsey; 18 grandchildren; three sisters, Miriam Welken, Lillian Hilde and Doris Fugere; and one brother, Lloyd Nelson.
Washburn-McReavy Funeral Chapel, Edina, Minn., was in charge of arrangements.

Robert Kjar
Funeral services for Robert Kjar, 59, Wyndmere, were held on Tuesday, January 21, 2003 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Wyndmere. Father Len Loeger-ing officiated. Mr. Kjar died on Friday, January 17, 2003 in his home.
Robert Kjar, son of Ernest and Norine (Huseth) Kjar, was born January 15, 1944 at Missoula, Mont. He moved with his family to farm near McLeod where he attended grade school. He attended high school in Wyndmere. Robert then worked for Tready Haugen in Wyndmere before attending State School of Science, Wahpeton.
On September 23, 1967, he married Jennifer Clark in Lidgerwood. They made their home in Wyndmere. He was employed for Mel’s Electric, which later became Hendrick’s Property Management where he worked for over 30 years. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. He had also been a volunteer for the Wyndmere Fire Department.
He is survived by his wife, Jennifer Kjar, Wyndmere; two sons, Brad (Sonja) Kjar, Fargo, and Jason (Jennifer) Kjar, Mooreton; one daughter, Melissa Kjar, Wahpeton; six sisters, Karolyn Nelson, Wyndmere, Gwen (Charles) Rotenberger, Lisbon, Joy (Jim) Haberman, Barney, Deb (Doug) Heitkamp, Barney, Dee Dee (Bill) Haberman, Barney, and Diane (Mike) Westrom, Elbow Lake, Minn; one brother-in-law, Alan Clark, West Fargo; and five grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Interment at St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery, rural Wyndmere.

Monsignor Lambert V. Studzinski
Funeral services for Monsignor Lambert V. Studzinski, 87, Hankinson, were held on Friday, January 17, 2003 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, Wyndmere. Bishop Samuel J. Aquila presided and Bishop James Sullivan and attending priests were the celebrants. Msgr. Studzinski died on Sunday, January 12, 2003 at Innovis Hospital, Fargo.
Father Lambert V. Studzinski, son of Joseph and Wanda (Swiderski) Studzinski, was born April 14, 1915 in Chicago, Ill. He attended school in Chicago until the age of 15 and then moved to St. Francis, Wis., where he graduated from Pio Nono High School in 1932. He then attended St. Francis de Sales Seminary in Milwaukee, graduating in 1940. Father Studzinski was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Fargo on May 19, 1940 at Holy Redeemer Church in Milwaukee, Wis.
Father Studzinski’s pastor assignments included assistant pastor at St. Alphonsus Parish, Langdon, from 1940-1943; lieutenant and chaplain in the U.S. Navy from 1943-1946; administrator of St. Boniface, Wimbledon, from 1946-1947; pastor of Assumption, Pembina, from 1947-1952; pastor of St. Patrick, Minto, from 1952-1957; pastor of St. John the Baptist, Ardoch, N.D., from 1957-1959; pastor of St. Philip, Hankinson, from 1959-1973; pastor of Sacred Heart in Cando, from 1973-1987; and pastor of St. John the Baptist, Wyndmere, from November 1987 until his retirement in September 1994. In his retirement years, Farther Studzinski continued his pastoral duties by helping in the area parishes and serving at St. Gerard’s Nursing Home in Hankinson. In 1945, Farther Studzinski received a blessing from Pope Pius XII during a private audience with him. Father Studzinski was invested as a Monsignor on February 13, 2000.
He is survived by one brother, Glenn (who changed his last name to Studz), Mt. Horeb, Wis.; one niece; and a very special friend, Florence Dawson, Hankinson, who served as his housekeeper for 50 years.
Interment at St. John the Baptist Catholic Cemetery, rural Wyndmere.

Dorothy F. Ernst
Funeral services for Dorothy F. Ernst, 96, Fargo, were held on Tuesday, January 21, 2003 at Faith United Methodist Church, Fargo. Mrs. Ernst died on Wednesday, January 15, 2003 at Villa Maria, Fargo.
Dorothy Florence Nelson, daughter of Andrew S. and Augusta “Gustie” (Larson) Nelson, was born on January 26, 1906 in Joice, Iowa. She was the fifth of nine children. She lived on a farm near Lake Mills, Iowa until about age three. She and her family then moved to the Montpelier, N.D. area where she graduated from high school. She went to Valley City Teachers College in North Dakota and earned a teaching certificate. She taught in a one-room normal school around Marion until the school was consolidated in the late 1920s. She then managed and operated Nelson’s Beauty Shop in Enderlin.
On November 14, 1942, she married Roy Ernst at the Little Brown Church in Vale, Iowa. When Roy finished his military service, they moved to Fargo where Dorothy was a substitute teacher for years in the Fargo School System. She retired from teaching in 1971. She and Roy moved to Riverview Place, Fargo, in December 2000. They then moved to Villa Maria Nursing Home in Fargo in November 2001.
She is survived by her husband, Roy Ernst, Fargo; two sons, LeRoy (Judy) Ernst, Fargo, and David (Barb) Ernst, Lilburn, Ga.; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; four sisters, Lucille, Mae, Eva and Mildred; and four brothers, Simon, Oliver, Jimmy and Lloyd.
Interment at Riverside Cemetery, Fargo.

Laura Mae Peterson
Funeral services for Laura Mae Peterson, 98, Hunter, N.D., were held on Monday, January 20, 2003 at First Presbyterian and United Methodist Church, Hunter. Mrs. Peterson died on Friday, January 17, 2003 in MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.
Laura Mae Peterson, daughter of Albert and Margaret (Oxby) Peterson, was born on December 6, 1904 in Hunter. She attended Valley City Teacher’s College and later graduated from UND, Grand Forks. In her young adult years, she taught school at Upbridge, N.D., and at Parshall, N.D., where she was also the girls’ basketball coach.
On November 10, 1932, she married William Peterson. They farmed near Hunter. William died in 1991. She was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary for over 50 years, as well as a longtime member of the Fortieth Homemakers Club. She was a lifetime member of the United Methodist Church and United Methodist Women Circle.
She is survived by three sons, Cordell (Nancy) Peterson, El Paso, Tex., Delano (Bev) Peterson, Fargo; and Andrew (Myrene) Peterson, Enderlin; 11 grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, William Peterson; and a sister, Florence.
Interment at Hunter Cemetery, Hunter, N.D.
Baker Funeral Home, Hunter, was in charge of arrangements.

Margaret E. Tostenson
Margaret A. (Nogowski) Tostenson was born on July 19, 1936 in Forman, N.D. She attended grade school and high school there. After high school graduation, she moved to Fargo and was employed at the Bell Telephone Company.
On September 28, 1957, she married James D. Tostenson, Lisbon. They spent their honeymoon in Canada and Minnesota. They moved to Sunnyvale, Calif. in October 1957 where James accepted a position with the Lockheed Martin Missiles & Space Company. They lived in that area until 1992 when James retired, moving to Sacramento in 1993. Margaret worked for Macy’s in San Jose and transferred to Sacramento to the Downtown Mall Store where she was working until her death on December 3, 2002. She was a member of the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament and several other local organizations.
She is survived by four children, three daughters and one son, all married: Mona (George) Costa, San Jose, Calif., Gregory (Debbie) Tostenson, Cupertino, Calif.; Tina (Henry) Sancedo, Modesto, Calif.; and Rita (Ciro) Milo, Front Royal, Va.; four grandchildren and one great-grandchild; one brother, Ray Nogowski, Flint, Mich.; and one sister, Lois Archer, Rochester, Minn.
Funeral Services were held on Saturday, December 7, 2002 at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament, Sacramento, Calif.
Interment at St. Mary’s Cemetery.
Lombard and Company Funeral Directors, were in charge of the arrangements.

Elroy D. Huseby
Funeral services for Elroy D. Huseby, 43, Enderlin, were held on Saturday, January 18, 2003 at First Lutheran Church, Enderlin. Reverend Eric Ellison officiated. Mr. Huseby died Sunday, January 12, 2003 at his home.
Elroy D. Huseby, son of Arville Huseby, West Fargo and Beverly Huseby, Enderlin was born on July 20, 1959 in Breckenridge, Minn. He attended school in Enderlin. Elroy worked for Ekre House Movers for several years. He worked for Alert Construction for several years. He helped build the sunflower plant in Enderlin. He also worked for local farmers.
He is survived by one brother, Craig, Enderlin and three sisters, Denise (Donald) Jahner, Enderlin, Delaine Huseby, Federal Way, Wash. and June Huseby, Sheldon.
Pallbearers for the funeral were Kent Kemmer, Wendell Stern, Mike Verlinden, Percy Storhoff, Barry Fernow, Mike Currier, Calvin Stoffel, and Steve Bjerke.
Music was provided by organist Shirley Hanson and soloist Sylvia Schlagel.
Interment at St. Petri Cemetery, rural Nome.

James McGregor
Funeral services for James McGregor, 80, Brampton, were held on Saturday, January 18, 2003 at our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, Cogswell, N.D. Mr. McGregor died Wednesday, January 8, 2003 at his home in Brampton.
James Warren Allan McGregor, son of Eugene and Catherine (McMahon) McGregor was born on March 17, 1922 at Lisbon. He was baptized in Enderlin. He went to school in Brampton and later graduated from Cogswell High School in 1940. After receiving his education, he worked at several jobs before moving to California. While there, he worked at Edwards Air Force Base, Douglas Aircraft, the Oakland Airport and Bethlehem Steel.
On November 14, 1956, he married Ida Marie Sulze. They returned to North Dakota where Jim was employed by the Jarrett Ranch for the next 33 years. Ida died on March 29, 1965. In 1970, Jim married Minnie Bailey. After retiring from the Jarrett Ranch, Jim worked part time for Howard Huffman of Straubville, N.D. until 2000. At that time, failing health made it necessary for him to give up working. Jim was a member of Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church of Cogswell.
He is survived by his wife, Minnie McGregor, Brampton; one son, Owen McGregor, Brampton; one daughter, Marie (Tim) Ranck, Yankton, S.D.; three grandchildren; three brothers, John (Irene) McGregor, Puyallup, Wash., Gerald (Arletta) McGregor, Sisseton, and Douglas McGregor, Plymouth, Ind.; three sisters, Nita Brown, Sleepy Eye, Minn., Margaret Macilac, Neward, Ohio, Isabel (Tom) Poling, Jensen Beach, Fla. He was preceded in death by his wife, Ida, his parents, and two brothers, William and Donald McGregor.
Pallbearers for the funeral were Chris Huffman, Gerald McGregor, Mike Sheerin, Tom Ranek, Stan Schulz and Roy Hildebrandt.
Music was provided by organist Barb Hayen and soloist Ron Jarrett.
Interment at Sargent Cemetery.
Price Funeral Chapel, Britton, was in charge of arrangements.
