John A. Bock
Funeral services for John A. Bock, 88, Lisbon, were held on Wednesday, April 30, 2003 at Gustaf Adolf Lutheran Church, Gwinner. Reverend Liz Engel officiated. Mr. Bock died Friday, April 25, 2003 at MeritCare Hospital, Fargo.
John A. Bock, son of Gust and Lettie (Martin) Bock was born on August 28, 1914 in rural Stirum, N.D. He attended school in Stirum.
On January 1, 1940, he married Cleone Daniels in Forman, N.D. John worked at the Triple A office in Forman. He started farming in 1937. He started working at Bobcat as a machine shop foreman in 1961. They moved into Gwinner in 1964. He retired in 1976. They moved to Lisbon in October 2002. John was a basketball referee in southeaster North Dakota for 33 years. He was inducted into the N.D. Officials Hall of Fame in 1975. He was a township clerk for White Stone Hill for 25 years and had served as a trustee of Gustaf Adolf Lutheran Church in Gwinner.
He is survived by his wife, Cleone Bock, Lisbon; two sons, Duane (Mary) Bock, Willmar, Minn., and Rick Bock, Fergus Falls; one daughter, Marilyn Mohn, Minneapolis; six grandchildren; and one brother, Leonard Bock, Hot Springs, Ark. He was preceded in death by one sister, Florence and one brother, Donald.
Pallbearers for the funeral were Dennis Bock, Dwight Karsten, Norval Berg, Larry Purdon, Gregory Kelsen, and Keith Mikesh. Honorary pallbearers were Stephanie Kelsen, Scott Kelsen, Darin Bock, Brian Bock, Trevor Bock, Kristin Bock, Matt Castle, and Renee Bock.
Music was provided by organist Carol Ydstie and soloist Carol Ydstie.
Interment at Gwinner Cemetery.
Armstrong Funeral Home, Lisbon, was in charge of arrangements.

Olive M. Jankowski
Funeral services for Olive M. Jankowski, 86, Enderlin, were held on Tuesday, April 29, 2003 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Enderlin. Father John Fallon officiated. Mrs. Jankowski died Saturday, April 26, 2003 at Maryhill Manor, Enderlin under Hospice care.
Olive M. Jerdee, daughter of Andrew and Ingeborg (Lerdahl) Jerdee was born on April 1, 1917 in Enderlin.She attended school in Enderlin.
On January 19, 1934, she married George Jankowski, in Enderlin. Olive worked at the Grand Cafe, Enderlin, Dry Cleaners, Enderlin, Martin’s Super Valu Enderlin, and Enderlin Rexall Drug. She was a member of Royal Neighbors of America and St. Patrick’s Altar Society. He died March 16, 1978.
She is survived by two sons, Jerome (Lana) Jankowski, Nome, and James (Paulette) Jankowski, Enderlin; four daughters, Joan Bratlie, Lisbon, Jeanette (Harold) Froemke, Kingman, Ariz., Audrey (Chris) Wegerle, Devils Lake, Juanita (Larry) Kitchen, Lisbon; 24 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren; 8 great-great-grandchildren; and one sister, Mamie Nygaard, Hillsboro. She was preceded in death by her husband, George Jankowski and one son, George Jankowski.
Pallbearers for the funeral were Robert Bratlie, Vally Grabinger, Teri Krieger, Jamie Schmidt, Katie Jankowski, Jeri Jankowski, Robbie Jankowski, James Fey II, Tim Jankowski. Honorary Pallbearers were all her other grandchildren.
Music was provided by organist Polly Lindemann and cantor Sylvia Schlagel.
Interment at St. Patrick’s Catholic Cemetery, Enderlin.

Gerald D. Thompson
Funeral services for Gerald D. “Chris” Thompson, 73, Lisbon, were held on Wednesday, April 30, 2003 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Lisbon, N.D. Reverend Norman Anderson and Reverend David Killeen officiated. Mr. Thompson died Saturday, April 26, 2003 at Lisbon Area Health Services Hospital, Lisbon.
Gerald D. Thompson, son of Adolph and Hazel (Peterson) Thompson, was born on June 7, 1929 in Lisbon. He attended school in Buttzville and Lisbon.
On January 24, 1954, he married Beverly Schiffner in Englevale. They lived in Fargo where Chris worked for Red Own Corporate until 1966 when they moved to Milnor where Chris worked at the Red Owl Store. In 1968 they moved to Lisbon where he worked at Arnie’s Red Owl. He retired in the fall of 1980. After retiring from Red Owl he assisted at Lau Motors and Rain Forest Car Wash in Lisbon.
He is survived by his wife Beverly Thompson, Lisbon; two sons, Steve (Paula) Thompson, Eden Prairie, Minn., Rick (Kari) Crookston, Minn.; three daughters, Cheryl (Mark) Kraft, Fargo, Christi Thompson, Fargo, Sandy (Jeff) Hagen, Fargo; his mother Hazel Thompson, Lisbon; eight grandchildren; two step-grandchildren; three brothers, Vernon (Lorraine) Lisbon, Georgie (Janice) Lisbon, Galeyn (Marcey) Thompson, Lisbon; four sisters, Elaine (Lynn) Melby, Fargo, DeLores Wolf, Fargo, Beverly (Ron) Vandrovec, Fargo, and Gladys (Ron) Fredrickson, Phoenix, Ariz. He was preceded in death by his father, Adolph and two brothers, Virgil and Layton.
Pallbearers for the funeral were Terry Thompson, Ryan Thompson, Dan Thompson, Mike Thompson, Jerry Thompson, and Dave Thompson.
Music was provided by organist Jan Hansen and soloist Larry Ketterling.
Interment at Oakwood Cemetery, Lisbon.

Ann Vander Maten
Funeral services for Ann Charbonneau Vander Maten, 63, Moorhead, were held on Wednesday, May 14, 2003 at the First Presbyterian Church, Moorhead. Mrs. Vander Maten died Sunday, May 11, 2003 after a long battle with ovarian cancer.
Ann Charbonneau was born January 26, 1940, the daughter of Elmo and Dorothy Charbonneau in Spencer, Iowa. She spent her younger years in Fulton, Mo. moving to Lisbon when she was twelve. She graduated from Lisbon High School in 1958, and attend the University of North Dakota. Ann then moved to Minneapolis, Minn., where she graduated from Brown Institute of Broadcasting in 1960 and began working at KLFD Radio in Litchfield.
In 1961, she married Jon Derwood Kent of Detroit lakes. Ann and her daughters moved to Moorhead in 1976, and she joined the staff at Jack Akre Interior Design. She attended Moorhead State University, earning a degree in Speech Communications and Theatre Arts in 1981. After graduating, Ann taught the first creative dramatics class for children at Trollwood’s summer theatre program and in local day cares throughout Fargo. She was married to Carl Medin from 1982-1985. It was also during this time that she joined the staff of the Fargo-Moorhead Community Theatre, creating and developing the Prairie Theatre Academy for children. This involved teaching drama classes and directing all children’s productions. Ann also developed and toured with her creation of Fourth Street players, providing an out-reach to high schools on drug and alcohol abuse. In her spare time, Ann founded and directed the Gooseberry Park Players under the Moorhead Parks and Recreation Dept. This remains a summer theatre program by children and for children. She also spent four years as an Artist in Residence for the state of North Dakota, traveling to schools throughout the state teaching creative dramatics. In 1987, Ann married John Vander Maten of Fargo She spent many years teaching creative dramatics for the Moorhead School System, and developed a spelling pilot program using drama as a teaching tool for children with learning disabilities. In 1992, Ann founded and directed the Silver Follies. This continues as a senior adult theatre group at the Fargo Moorhead Community Theatre, and performs in the surrounding areas as an out-reach program of the theatre. After 13 years at FMCT, Ann retired to join her husband in opening Vander House, a group home for adolescent boys. She also opened the Border Buddies Stamp Studio with her partner, Cheryl Toutges. However after a year, she left the store to return to being a full-time mom to the boys at Vander House. For eight years she added ten young men to her family. Ann was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Moorhead.
She is survived by her husband, four children Jamie Ann (Mike) Larson, Fargo and Jodi Jon (Peter) Evenson, Moorhead; one stepson Eric (Jennifer Spahn) Vander Maten, Omaha, Neb.; one stepdaughter Jill Christine (Brent Lamblez) Vander Maten, Dent, Minn.; and two grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Esther V. Anderson
Funeral services for Esther V. Anderson, 76, Milnor, N.D., were held on Saturday, May 10, 2003 at the Milnor Lutheran Church. Reverend Arthur Larson officiated. Mrs. Anderson died Wednesday, Mary 7, 2003 at the St. Francis Medical Center in Breckenridge, Minn.
Esther Viola Spiedel, daughter of Rienhold and Magdelina (Tiede) Spiedel was born on February 27, 1927 in Merricourt, N.D. In 1938, she moved with her family to the Milnor area where she continued her schooling.
On June 29, 1946, she married Marvin N. Anderson in Breckenridge. The couple farmed in the Milnor area, where Esther had a daycare on the farm for a number of years. In 1986 they moved into Milnor and Esther cooked for the Sargent Senior Services for 17 years. She also cleaned houses in the area for several years. Marvin died on August 3, 1992. Esther continued to live in Milnor until the time of her death. She was a member of the Milnor Lutheran Church.
She is survived by two daughters, Marlene (Orvin) Hogness, Milnor, and Cheryl (Albert) Roder, Milnor; five sons, Wayne (Margaret) Anderson, Gwinner, Warren (Barbara) Anderson, Lisbon, Mark (Gail), Wyndmere, Curt (Jean) Anderson, Milnor, and Tim (Tammy) Anderson, Walcott; 21 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren; one sister, Edna (Marquette, Rutland; two sister-in-laws, Alma Mehl, Breckenridge and Harriet Spiedel. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, five brothers, two sisters, and one granddaughter, Kelsey Anderson.
Pallbearers for the funeral were her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Music was provided by organist Carol Ydstie and soloist Bob Schutt.
Interment at Concordia Cemetery, rural Milnor.
Dahlstrom Funeral Home, Milnor, was in charge of arrangements.

William Christianson
Funeral services for William Christianson, 75, Austin, Minn., formerly Devils Lake, N.D., were held on Thursday, May 8, 2003 at St. Olaf Lutheran Church, Devils Lake. Reverend Harold Ovre officiated. Mr. Christianson died died Sunday, May 4, 2003 at his son’s home in Austin.
William Christianson, son of William and Anna (Jorgenson) Christianson was born on April 19, 1928 at Devils Lake. He was reared and educated in the Devils Lake area. He entered the U.S. Army and served his country during World War II. After his discharge, he returned to Devils Lake and worked for Soper Brothers Construction and later for Devils Lake Paint and Glass.
In 1952, he married Joyce Hoyt in Devils Lake. They established their home in Lake Wood, rural Devils Lake where they lived through the years. In 1968, Bill established Christianson Paint and Glass in Lakota which he owned and operated until his retirement.
He is survived by his wife, Joyce Christianson, Lakota; three sons, Gary (Lanette) Christianson, Austin, Minn., Paul (Dorothy) Christianson, Lisbon, Wade (Marlene) Christianson, Devils Lake; two daughters, Cindy Woolridge, Bismarck, Lynn (Mike) Didas, Auburndale, Fla.; 12 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Mavis Borstad.
Pallbearers for the funeral were Paul Christianson, Jr., Jesse Christianson, Steve Fisk, Brad Hooey, Wayne Hooey and Tom Evenrude. Honorary Pallbearers were Landis Bjornstad and all of Bill’s family and friends.
Military Honors were be accorded by the Neathery-Simensen Post #756, Devils Lake Veterans of Foreign Wars.
Interment at Devils Lake Cemetery.

Louis L. Barta
Funeral services for Louis L. Barta, 90, LaMoure, N.D., were held on Friday, May 16, 2003 at the Holy Rosary Catholic Church, LaMoure. Father Duane Coate officiated. Mr. Barta died Tuesday, May 13, 2003 at the Oakes Community Hospital in Oakes.
Louis L. Barta, son of Frank and Frances (Abraham) Barta was born on September 15, 1912 in Abie, Neb. In 1920, he moved with his family to the Verona area, where he continued his education. After his schooling, Louis farmed in the Verona area.
On July 12, 1942, he married Regina Torscher in Verona. The couple continued to farm in the area until retiring in 1975, when they moved into LaMoure. Regina died in October of 1993. Louis continued to live in LaMoure and entered the St. Rose Care Center on February 28, 2003. He was a member of the Holy Rosary Catholic Church in LaMoure. He was active in the LaMoure Senior Citizens.
He is survived by two sons, Thomas (Kathy) Barta, Jamestown and Lawrence (Janice) Barta, Sanbord, N.D.; one daughter, Virginia Barta, Bismarck; five grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, two brothers and three sisters.
Pallbearers for the funeral were Gerald Berube, Jim Marshall, Jim Fields, Joe Antoine, John Barta, and Lorn Barta.
Sue and Norm Goehring will provide special music for the service.
Interment at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Cemetery, Verona.
Dahlstrom Funeral Home, LaMoure was in charge of arrangements.
