U.S., Obituary Collection, 1930-Current

Clara Camp

ALBION - Clara M. Camp, 87, of Albion died Sunday, June 28, 1998, at Wolf Memorial Good Samaritan Center in Albion.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Zion Lutheran Church in Albion. The Rev. Brian Bergum and intern Annette Minderman will officiate. Burial will be in Mount Pleasant cemetery at Petersburg with military rites by American Legion Post 334 of Petersburg.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Levander Funeral Home in Albion.

Mrs. Camp was born on April 4, 1911, on the family farm in the North Branch area east of Petersburg to Gullick and Martha (Levos) Hovelsrud. She attended District 75 School in Boone County and graduated from Elgin High School.

She entered the U.S. Army on Aug. 12, 1943, and served in France with the Women's Army Auxiliary Corps as a staff sergeant. She was honorably discharged on Jan. 19, 1946.

She married Joseph D. Camp on Dec. 31, 1946, in Madison County. They lived many places, including Petersburg, Elgin, Clay Center, Franklin and California. They lived for 26 years in Cambridge, where she worked as a clerk for the Frenchman Cambridge Irrigation District. They retired in 1977 and moved to Lincoln, where they lived for 18 years. They moved to Albion in June 1995. She entered Wolf Memorial Good Samaritan Center on May 6, 1998.

She was a member of the Sons of Norway and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Survivors include her husband.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Grand and Gordon; and one sister, Marie Mannlein.

'J.B.' Gallion

ALBION - Judson B. "J.B." Gallion, 93, of Albion died Monday, June 29, 1998, at Wolf Memorial Good Samaritan Center in Albion.

Services are pending with Levander Funeral Home in Albion.

'Skippy' Hobbs

CENTRAL CITY -- Roy Franklin "Skippy" Hobbs, 80, of Central City died Sunday, June 28, 1998, at Litzenberg Memorial County Hospital in Central City.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Thursday at the United Methodist Church in Central City. The Rev. Debra Tompsett-Welch will officiate. Burial will be in the Central City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Wednesday at Solt Funeral Home in Central City.

Mr. Hobbs was born on Oct. 22, 1917, in Merrick County to Bert and Anna (Hence) Hobbs. He grew up in Fullerton and graduated from Fullerton High School in 1935.

While in school, he shined sh's at the local barber shop and worked at the roller skating rink.

He married Hannah L. Nitzel on Dec. 24, 1938, in Central City. They lived in Central City throughout their marriage. Mr. Hobbs worked for Cold Storage and Osborne Plumbing. He retired from Osborne Plumbing in 1983. After retirement, he worked for the Republican-Nonpareil in Central City and delivered announcement cards for Solt Funeral Home.

Mr. Hobbs was a member of the United Methodist Church in Central City and served on the Central City Volunteer Fire Department for more than 40 years. He enjoyed golf, gardening and dancing.

Survivors include his wife; three grandsons; eight great-grandchildren; and one brother, Lee Hobbs of Aurora, Colo.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Sandra Warren and one sister.

Berniece Ketchum

AURORA - Berniece Irene Ketchum, 79, of Aurora died Sunday, June 28, 1998, at Memorial Hospital in Aurora.

Memorial services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Higby Mortuary in Aurora. The Rev. Peggy Michael-Rush and the officers of Aurora Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary 4993 will officiate.

There will be no visitation.

Mrs. Ketchum was born on Oct. 17, 1918, at Puyallup, Wash., to Robert and Mable (Wilcox) Anderson.

She married Bruce Ketchum on July 26, 1944, at Laguna Beach, Calif. They lived in Long Beach, Calif., until moving to Aurora in 1980.

She was a member of the Aurora VFW Auxiliary and had served as president.

Survivors include her husband; one son, Robert of Aurora; one daughter, Carol (Mrs. Dale) Saddler of Aurora; six grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by a daughter, Joyce.

William Laudenklos

ST. EDWARD - William Laudenklos, 97, of St. Edward died Sunday, June 28, 1998, at Cloverlodge Care Center in St. Edward.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist-Presbyterian Church in St. Edward. The Rev. Mike McInnis will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery at St. Edward.

Visitation will be from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at Miller-Levander Funeral Home in St. Edward.

Verna Palacz

WOOD RIVER - Verna J. Palacz, 78, of Wood River died Sunday, June 28, 1998, at the Good Samaritan Center in Wood River.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Wood River. The Revs. Ray Kosmicki and Don Larmore will officiate. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m., with the rosary at 7 p.m., Tuesday at the church.

Memorials are suggested to the church or the Wood River Rescue Squad.

Apfel Funeral Home of Wood River is in charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Palacz was born on March 3, 1920, at Rockville to Joseph and Minnie (Seifert) Young. She attended Soulville Country School and graduated from Boelus High School.

She married Edward Kucera on March 3, 1943, at Rockville. Mr. Kucera died in 1947.

She married Leonard Palacz on Sept. 19, 1949, at Rockville. The couple farmed near Elba and southwest of Farwell for 21 years. They moved to Wood River in 1971. She had answered the phone for Apfel Funeral Home in Wood River for the past 25 years.

She entered the Good Samaritan Center two weeks ago.

She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and altar society. She enjoyed sewing and cooking and had made many teddy bears for friends.

Survivors include her husband; two sons, Edward of Lakin, Kan., and Larry of Grand Island; twin daughters, Loretta (Mrs. Dennis) Fries of Cairo and Lorraine (Mrs. Benito) Gutierrez of Houston; 14 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; one brother, Edward Young of Rockville; and two sisters, Vera Stoeger and Norine Nielsen, both of Boelus.

She was preceded in death by one brother, William Young.

Fred Hatch

OROVILLE, Calif. - Fred A. Hatch, 77, of Oroville, Calif., formerly of Grand Island, died June 23, 1998, at Twin Oaks, Calif., after a long illness.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Kelly Ridge Clubhouse. The Rev. Myron Ista will officiate. Brusie Funeral Home of Chico, Calif., is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials are suggested to the Feather River Home Health Agency.

Mr. Hatch was born on May 15, 1921, at Oroville to Alva E. and Mary Inez Hatch. He attended Santa Rosa High School.

He served in the U.S. Navy.

He married Lois E. Hatch. He retired from National Distillers as a merchandiser after 44 years.

He was a member of the Painters Union and Kelly Ridge Homeowners Association. He loved to play golf and enjoyed fishing and working in his yard. In the last few years, he had spent time with his wife, mother and stepfather during their illnesses.

Survivors include one daughter, Kathy Ripp and one son, Chris Hatch of Chico, Calif.; five grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
