U.S., Obituary Collection, 1930-Current

Gail Harrenstein

DONIPHAN -- Gail M. Harrenstein, 75, of Doniphan died Thursday, May 6, 1999, at his home.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at First St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Hastings. The Rev. Kathleen Kasper will officiate. Burial will be in Parkview cemetery at Hastings.

Visitation will be from noon to 9 p.m. Saturday, 1 to 9 p.m. Sunday and 9 a.m. to noon Monday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home in Hastings. Further visitation will be one hour before services Monday at the church.

Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.

Mr. Harrenstein was born on March 18, 1924, on a farm south of Hastings to John B. and Ella Mae (Anderson) Harrenstein. He graduated from Hastings High School in 1942.

He married Dorothy Hobrock on March 12, 1949, in Hastings. They moved south of Doniphan in 1952. He was a lifelong area resident and farmer.

Mr. Harrenstein was a 4-H leader and an assistant baseball coach in the Doniphan area. He was a member of First St. Paul's Lutheran Church of Hastings.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Larry Harrenstein and Craig Harrenstein, both of Doniphan; two daughters, Linda Dill of Doniphan and Ann (Mrs. Jamie) Beckman of Grand Island; 14 grandchildren; and four sisters, Della (Mrs. Willard) Stein, Ruth (Mrs. Ernest) Reiner and Leah (Mrs. Don) McCrady, all of Hastings, and Leola (Mrs. Merlyn) Lay of Glenvil.

He was preceded in death by one brother, John Harrenstein.

Virginia Holmes

ANSLEY -- Virginia Holmes, 80, of Ansley died Thursday, May 6, 1999, at Sandhills Manor Nursing Home in Broken Bow.

Mrs. Holmes was cremated. An informal gathering for family and friends will be from 9:30 to 11 a.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church Fellowship Hall in Ansley.

A memorial has been established to the church.

Frank Kucera Jr.

CENTRAL CITY -- Frank Kucera Jr., 89, of Central City died on Friday, May 7, 1999, at Integrated Health Systems in Palmer.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at Solt Funeral Home in Central City. The Rev. Ken West will officiate. Burial will be in the Central City Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Memorials are suggested to the family's choice.

Mr. Kucera was born on Nov. 11, 1909, in Crete to Frank Sr. and Mary (Trousil) Kucera. He began his education in Crete and then moved with his family to Merrick County, where he attended District 26 School. He received his eighth-grade diploma in a ceremony at the Merrick County Courthouse.

After completing his education, he farmed with his father. For a year, he lived in Lincoln, where he was a bank runner. When he returned to the Archer area, he resumed farming with his father.

He married Eunice Sherwood on July 29, 1931, in Central City. Mr. Kucera farmed until 1965 and then began selling insurance for Mid Continent. He retired in 1994. Mrs. Kucera died on Sept. 12, 1991. Mr. Kucera continued to live in Central City until moving to Integrated Health Systems in Palmer in April 1999.

He played on local baseball teams as a young man. He enjoyed fishing and hunting and was a member of the United Methodist Church.

Survivors include three sons, Jim Kucera and Bill Kucera, both of Palmer, and Marvin Kucera of Mexico; 12 grandchildren; two step grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; four step great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by two grandchildren; two step grandchildren; one great-grandson; two brothers, Rudolph and Lumier Kucera; and one sister, Millie Ricks.

Doug Maw Sr.

FULLERTON -- Doug E. Maw Sr., 55, of Fullerton died Wednesday, May 5, 1999, as the result of a traffic accident near Osceola.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at Palmer Funeral Home in Fullerton. The Rev. Timothy Wagner will officiate. Burial will be in the Fullerton Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Mr. Maw was born on May 13, 1943, at North Platte to Robert and Nadine (Wilson) Maw. He grew up in Hershey, attended school in North Platte and graduated in 1962. He attended Parks Business School in Denver in 1964.

He moved to Fullerton in 1975 and served as Fullerton Hospital administrator until 1986. He returned to Fullerton in 1992.

He married Vickie Bose in April 1993 in South Dakota.

In 1995, Mr. Maw was the 76th heart transplant patient at Bryan Memorial Hospital in Lincoln.

He enjoyed fishing, boating, camping, hunting and woodworking.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Douglas Maw Jr. and David Maw, both of Central City; one daughter, Tammberley (Mrs. John) Nichols of North Platte; three stepdaughters, Laura (Mrs. Ronald) Andrews of Genoa City, Wis., Yvonne (Mrs. Mark) Russell of Fullerton and Christina (Mrs. Mark) Harreus of Federal Way, Wash.; nine grandchildren; five step grandchildren; his mother, of Hershey; and one sister, Lorene (Mrs. Mark) Crow of Hershey.

'Hank' Peters

LOUP CITY -- Hendrick "Hank" B. Peters, 78, of Loup City died Thursday, May 6, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at St. Josaphat's Catholic Church in Loup City. The Rev. Reginald A. Urban will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen cemetery at Loup City with graveside military honors by American Legion Post 48 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7027.

Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m., with a 7:30 p.m. vigil service, Sunday at the church.

Memorials are suggested to the American Legion Baseball Program.

Peters Funeral Home of Loup City is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Peters was born on March 21, 1921, at Ashton to Henry and Agatha (Tyma) Peters. He attended Ashton rural schools and St. Francis Parochial School in Ashton. He graduate from Loup City High School in 1939.

He moved to Omaha and worked at a meatpacking plant. He served in the U.S. Navy Seabees from March 1945 to July 1946.

He married Carla Wroblewski on Sept. 30, 1948, at Loup City. Mr. Peters worked at various jobs. He owned and operated Hank's Bar in Loup City and later worked for the U.S. Bureau of Reclamation.

He was a member of St. Josaphat's Catholic Church, a member and past commander of both American Legion Post 48 and VFW Post 7027.

He served on the Loup City Volunteer Fire Department for 21 years and was a former president.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Mark Peters of Grand Island and Randy Peters of Loup City; three daughters, Gwen (Mrs. Steve) McMahan and Tina Borer, both of Grand Island, and Terri (Mrs. Chris) Townsend of St. Paul; 15 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Rose Lewandowski of Loup City and Jeannie (Mrs. Ralph) Ignowski of Wichita, Kan.; and one brother, Reynold Peters of Oaks, N.D.

He was preceded in death by a sister, Carla Ann Peters; and an infant brother, Conrad Peters.

William Plock

COMSTOCK -- William B. Plock, 83, of Comstock died Friday, April 30, 1999, at St. Francis Medical Center in Grand Island.

Mr. Plock was cremated. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Douglas Grove cemetery in Comstock.

Ord Memorial Chapel is in charge of arrangements.

Memorials are suggested to the family.

Mr. Plock was born on Jan. 10, 1916, at Bennett to Albert and Ethel (Lusk) Plock.

He grew up in the Ord and Comstock areas and was educated at a country school.

He entered the U.S. Army in March 1942, was stationed overseas as a baker for an Army unit and was discharged in December 1945. After the service, he lived in Omaha and worked as a baker.

He married Phyllis May Chilewski on Sept. 18, 1948, at Council Bluffs, Iowa. The couple lived in Council Bluffs and then settled for a few years in the Comstock area, where they farmed. Mr. Plock then began a career with the Burlington Northern Railroad and worked on the railroad until his retirement. The couple lived in Comstock, Palmer and Ord. After retiring, Mr. Plock lived in Ord until moving to Comstock a few years ago.

His hobbies included fishing, hunting and gardening. He also played cribbage and cards.

Survivors include one daughter, Charlotte (Mrs. Leon) Ward of Comstock; two granddaughters; one great-grandson; five sisters, Evelyn Visek of Ord, Dorothy Granger of Comstock, Shirley Hill of Broken Bow, Thelma Harris of Burwell and Betty Hruby of Oregon; and two brothers, Don Plock of Bridgeport and Alley Plock of Oregon.

He was preceded in death by his wife; three brothers, Harry, Dorsey and Morris; and four sisters, Francis Plock, Mary Brass, Ethel Fecher and Esther Dlask.
