UMBERTO J. SPINALE, 80, of Middletown died Feb. 17 at home. Born in Boston, he lived in Brooklyn, N.Y., prior to moving to Middletown 11 years ago. He was a retired machinist for Admiral Plastics, Brooklyn, where he was employed for 20 years. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Nancy Morello Spinale of Middletown; his son and daughter-in-law, Salvatore P. and Patricia Spinale of Middletown; two brothers, John Spinale and Salvatore Spinale, both of Boston, two sisters, Maria Gianino and Zina Danielle, both of Boston; and one grandson. A funeral liturgy was offered at Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church, Boston. Entombment was at Woodlawn Cemetery, Boston.

MABEL T. SIMPLICIO, 96, of Middletown died Feb. 18 at home. Born in Italy, she lived in Red Bank prior to moving to Middletown 68 years ago. She was employed at Eisner’s Clothing Factory, Red Bank. She was a communicant of St. Anthony of Padua Roman Catholic Church, Red Bank. She was a member of the Fairview First Aid Auxiliary, Middletown. Her hobbies included crocheting, sewing and needlepoint. She was predeceased by her husband, Gabriel Simplicio. She is survived by three daughters, Teresa Simplicio and Lucille Simplicio, both Middletown, and Linda Simplicio-Dorn of Gaithersburg, Md.; and several nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. Anthony of Padua Church. Interment was at Mount Olivet Cemetery, Middletown. Memorial donations may be made to The Alzheimer’s Association, Greater N.J. Chapter, 400 Morris Ave., Suite 251, Denville 07834.

MARGARETA A. "MARGE" LAINE, 87, of Middletown, died Feb. 19 at home. Born in Chelsea-on-Hudson, N.Y., she lived in Clark prior to moving to Middletown in 1956. She was a charter member of Westminster Presbyterian Church, Middletown, where she previously served as financial secretary, church elder, clerk of session and choir member. She was predeceased by her husband, Frank Laine, in 2000; her brother, Leroy Romaine; and her sister, Ida Romaine Gates. She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Dr. James A. Laine and Alice Lee of Phoenix, Ariz.; her daughter and son-in-law, Patricia and David Brown of Middletown; four grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren. A memorial service was held at Westminster Presbyterian Church. Memorial donations may be made to Westminster Presbyterian Church, 94 Tindall Road, Middletown 07748.

CALVIN E. QUINTON, 71, of the Port Monmouth section of Middletown died Feb. 20 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Brooklyn, N.Y., he resided there prior to moving to Port Monmouth 30 years ago. He was a retired bridge attendant for Monmouth Ocean Bridge Department, where he was employed 18 years. He served with the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 2179, Middletown, and Local No. 1032 CWA. He is survived by his wife, Jean McInnes Quinton of Port Monmouth; three daughters and two sons-in-law, Jeanann and Karl Andrews of Highlands, Carolann Bryk of Wall, and Keriann and Michael Heyer of Union Beach; two brothers, Wilfred Quinton of Brooklyn, N.Y., and Raymond Quinton of Queens, N.Y.; two sisters, Dorthea Steath and Eileen Potenzone of Brooklyn; and six grandchildren. Cremation was private.

RUTH A. CHEPAUSKAS, 79, of Middletown died Feb. 21 at Meridian Health Care Center, Red Bank. Born in Scranton, Pa., she resided in Lodi before moving to Middletown six years ago. Mrs. Chepauskas was a bookkeeper at United Jersey Bank, Hackensack, for 15 years, retiring in 1982. She was predeceased by her husband, William Chepauskas, in 1984; and a sister, Dorothy Hennemouth, in 1968. She is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Linda and Charles Russo of Glen Rock, and Rosalie and Robert Spinelli of Middletown; two sons and daughters-in-law, William and Arlene Chepauskas of Frankford, and David and Denise Chepauskas of Middletown; nine grandchildren; and one great-granddaughter. A funeral service was held at King of Kings Lutheran Church, Middletown. Interment was at George Washington Memorial Park, Paramus. Memorial donations may be made to Meridian Hospice, 615 Hope Road, Eatontown 07724.

MAY B. WHITE, 75, of Middletown died Feb. 21 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in New York City, she resided in Narrowsburg, N.Y., prior to moving to Middletown four years ago. She was a clerk at The Book of the Month Club, New York City, for several years. She was predeceased by her husband, H. Lawrence; two brothers, William Parsons and John Parsons; and a sister, Mildred Kettles. She is survived by her niece and nephew, Susan and Jack Brooks of Middletown, with whom she lived; two sisters, Florence Birnbaum of Whiting, and Patricia Srom of Little Ferry; and several nieces, nephews, grand-nieces and grand-nephews.

JOHN F. ESCHBACH, 80, of Highlands died Feb. 6 at Hospice Center at Monmouth Medical Center, Long Branch. Born in Jersey City, he was a longtime resident of Highlands. He was a retired lieutenant in security at Monmouth Park Racetrack, Oceanport, for 15 years. Prior to that, he worked out of Operating Engineers Local No. 825, Newark. He served with the U.S. Army during World War II, attaining the rank of technician 5th grade, and received the Bronze Star. He is survived by his former wife, Valeria Eschbach of the Belford section of Middletown; four daughters and two sons-in-law, Patricia and James Corridon of Middletown, Joyce McElven of Howell, Carol and Tim Bingaman of Centerville, Ohio, and Peggy Eschbach of Belford; and four grandchildren.

MARCELLINE C. GRADY, 70, of Hazlet died Feb. 9 at JFK Medical Center, Edison. Born in Newark, she resided in Irvington for 48 years prior to moving to Hazlet. She was a bookkeeper at New Hope Foundation, Marlboro, for 20 years, retiring in 2001. She was an active member, Eucharistic minister, and member of the arts and environment committee at St. Benedict’s Roman Catholic Church, Holmdel. She was also coordinator of the liturgy section of Oursillo Movement of the Diocese of Trenton. She is survived by three daughters, Diane Grady of Middletown, Susan Grady of Jackson, and Casey Grady of Freehold; her son-in-law, Jeffrey Surgent of Freehold; her brother and sister-in-law, Richard and Margaret Conroy of West Orange; her sister, Patricia Stuy of Middletown; two grandchildren; and one nephew. A funeral service will be Feb. 12 at 9 a.m. at Day Funeral Home, Keyport. A funeral liturgy will follow at 10 a.m. at St. Benedict’s Roman Catholic Church, Holmdel. Interment will be at St. Joseph’s Cemetery, Keyport.

JOSEPH YOUNG JR., 74, of Kerrville, Texas, died Jan. 28 at Hilltop Village Nursing Home in Kerrville after a long battle with cancer. He was born in Newark and resided for many years in Keyport, Middletown and Brick before retiring to Texas. He worked for Gold Cooperage in Newark and was the first mate on the Atlantic Highlands party boats Happy, Vanguard, Super Cat, Sea Fox and others for many years. Joe is survived by Audrey, his wife of 45 years, and their three children, Jody R. Young of Wellington, Fla., Tracy L. Biedeger, M.D. of Boerne, Texas, and Timothy S. Young of Easton, Md., their spouses, and eight grandchildren. He is also survived by two daughters from his first marriage, Mary Alice Young of Myrtle Beach, S.C., and Betty Ann Capote of Savannah, Ga., two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, as well as his sisters, Rose of Florida, and Evelyn and Mary in New Jersey. Memorial donations may be made to Peterson Hospice in Kerrville.

MADELINE A. GEIGER, 70, of Middletown died Jan. 15 at Riverview Medical Center, Red Bank. Born in Hoboken, she resided in Middletown since 1968. She was a learning assistant in the writing lab at Brookdale Community College, Lincroft section of Middletown, for 20 years. She was a communicant of St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, New Monmouth section of Middletown. She enjoyed spending time with her family and friends. She is survived by her husband of 49 years, William Geiger of Middletown; her son and daughter-in-law, Paul and Monica Geiger of Shrewsbury; her daughter, Anne Geiger of Franklin Park; and two grandchildren. A Mass of Christian Burial was offered at St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church, New Monmouth. Burial was at Fair View Cemetery, Middletown. Memorial donations may be made to the Cancer Research and Treatment Fund Inc., 74 E. 79th St., Suite 5B, New York City, NY 10021.
