Mary T. Conkling
Four Seasons, Manasquan resident Mary T. [nee McManus] Conkling passed away Friday, Feb. 29 at Yale New Haven Hospital, New Haven, Conn.

She was 84 years old.

Mary was a loving wife to her late husband and devoted mother and grandmother. Born and raised in New York, N.Y., she lived in Manhattan and was educated at Ladycliff Academy in Highland Falls, N.Y. Prior to her marriage, Mary had been employed with the New York Law Journal and the General Motors Corp. She then came to Ridgewood and lived in Sea Girt from 1984 until moving to Four Seasons, Manasquan seven years ago.

A tremendous portion of her married life she had lived overseas, specifically in Sao Paulo, Brazil, Buenos Aires, Argentina and Antwerp, Belgium. She had a love of world travel and since the death of her husband, she continued to travel on her own well into her later years.

She was a communicant of St. Denis RC Church, Manasquan, and was a long time parishioner of St. Mark’s Church in Sea Girt. She had been a member of the Sea Girt Woman’s Club and served as a volunteer at the Breast Cancer Center at Jersey Shore Medical Center in Neptune. She was very active in her community at Four Seasons and was an avid bowler and golfer.

Mary was predeceased by her husband, John R. Conking, in June 1993, her parents, Francis and Nora Cosgrove McManus, and her brother and sister, Francis and Ann McManus.

Surviving are her devoted children, Gregory Conkling, of Jenkintown, Pa., Robert Conkling and his wife, Veronica, of Woodbridge, Va., and Ann and her husband, Dennis Walsh, of Milford, Conn.; her granddaughter Christine Conkling Walsh; and her sister, Patricia Bradford, of Cherry Hill.

Relatives and friends are invited to call tomorrow from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the O’Brien Funeral Home, Highway 35 at New Bedford Road, Wall, followed by a Mass of Christian Burial on Saturday, March 8, at 9:30 a.m. at St. Denis RC Church, 90 Union Ave., Manasquan.

Burial will be in St. Anne’s Cemetery, Wall.

In lieu of flowers the family request donations to the National Multiple Sclerosis Foundation, Mid Jersey Chapter, 246 Monmouth Road, Ocean Township, 07712, in memory of Mary.

Vincent J. Richlan
Sea Girt resident Vincent J. Richlan passed away on Sunday, Feb. 24 at Ocean Medical Center, Brick..

He was 94 years old.

Vincent was the owner and operator of Vincent Richlan Land Surveyor, Newark, for over 40 years. Born and raised in Newark, he moved to Sea Girt in 1969.

He graduated from Columbia University in 1934. He wrestled for Columbia and was a YMCA NJ State in 1940 at the 135 pound weight class. Vincent was also a district leader on the 11th Board in Newark for several years.

He loved to walk to stay fit. Vincent’s secret to life was to stay busy.

Vincent is survived by his wife, Genevieve DeMaio Richlan, Sea Girt. He is also survived by a brother, Alfred Richlan, Short Hills, and several nieces and nephews.

Interment was held at St. Anne’s Cemetery, Wall.

Helen Van Gelder
Sea Girt Estates resident Helen Gertrude Van Gelder died on Friday, Feb. 29 at Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune.

She was 80 years old.

Helen was born and raised in Philadelphia and graduated as a Registered Nurse, from the Nursing School of the University of Pennsylvania, in 1948. Helen worked the night shift on the neurosurgical ward at the Hospital of University of Pennsylvania before marrying and moving to Sea Girt in 1960, where she assisted her husband in their Real Estate Agency, Country-by-the-Sea Agency.

She moved to Sea Girt Estates in 1998, and was widowed by her husband, Jack Van Gelder, in 2000. She will be remembered as the best grandmother, ever!

Surviving are her daughter, Jacquette Williamson and son-in-law, Johnston Williamson, of Sea Girt Estates; three granddaughters, Courtney, Katelyn and Kristen; her sister, Nancy Buckley Fried, of Manhattan, N.Y.; and a niece, Alice Fiore Caruso, of Wall.

A funeral service will be held today at 10:30 a.m. at the O’Brien Funeral Home, Highway 35 at New Bedford Road, Wall.

Committal will be private at the convenience of family.

Being an avid animal lover, in lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Helen’s name to the Monmouth County S.P.C.A., 260 Wall St., Eatontown, 07724.

Richard G. Phillips
Del Ray Beach, Fla. resident Richard G. Phillips, formerly of Wall, passed away Thursday, Feb. 28.

He was 58 years old.

Richard was an equity trader for 30 years working for Prudential, Newark and Chase Manhattan Bank, in New York City.

He was a member of NOIP, National Organization of Investment Professionals. He thoroughly enjoyed coaching his two girls, Kelly and Kristin. Rick coached for North Wall Little League Softball, the Wall Wizards, and Wall Recreational Basketball for many years. He was born in Queens, N.Y. and raised on Long Island, moved to New Jersey in 1981 and then to Wall Township in 1987.

He was predeceased by his parents, George and Dorothy Phillips, and a brother, Robert. Rick is survived by his daughters, Kelly and Kristin Phillips and their mother, Ruth E. Phillips, of Wall; his sister, Susan Phillips and her children, Andrew and Sara, of Amherst, N.H.

Thomas H. Stuart Jr.
Manasquan resident Thomas H. Stuart Jr. passed away on Monday, Feb. 25 at Ocean Medical Center, Brick, with his family by his side.

He was 70 years old.

Thomas was a self-employed land surveyor. He was a land surveyor for 52 years. He started as a young man with Birdsall Engineering and Survey and was owner and operator of Thomas H. Stuart Professional Land Surveyor, Manasquan, for 27 years.

Thomas was a member of the NJ Society of Professional Land Surveyors. He was also an eight year veteran of the New Jersey Army National Guard, serving from 1955 until 1963.

Thomas was a model train enthusiast. He was born in Philadelphia and was raised in Belmar. Thomas, along with his wife, Martha Steiert Stuart, lived in Manasquan since 1963.

He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Martha Stuart, of Manasquan; two sons and a daughter-in-law, Thomas H. Stuart III, Manasquan, and Steven and his wife, Juliana J. Parry, DDS, of Barrington, Ill.; a sister, Carol Maron, Wall; a brother, Neil Stuart, Dexter, N.Y.; and several nieces and nephews.

Entombment was held at Monmouth Memorial Park, Tinton Falls.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to a charity of your choice.

Ruth C. Wilson
Brick resident Ruth Elaine Chapman Wilson, formerly of Wall Township, died on Feb. 25 at Meridian Hospice, Brick, of a stroke.

She was 89 years old.

Since 2006 she was a resident of Sunrise Assisted Living, in Brick. For nearly 60 years she was a resident of the Sea Girt Village area, of Wall Township.

Mrs. Wilson was born in Newark, on Sept. 23, 1918, and her family moved to Allenwood in 1925. Her father, Alfred C. Chapman, was mayor of Wall Township for several terms.

On Sept. 19, 1942, Mrs. Wilson married Fred W. Wilson Jr., of Point Pleasant, who died in 1999. They had two children, Fredric Woodbridge Wilson, of Cambridge, Mass., and Elaine Chapman Mazzara, of Brick.

For many years, Mrs. Wilson was an active member of the Manasquan United Methodist Church, and she always took an active role in her children’s activities, particularly Little League Baseball, Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts, and Parent-Teacher Associations.

She was an avid beachgoer and an enthusiastic bridge player, and she spent much time caring for the sick and elderly. For 25 years, Mr. and Mrs. Wilson spent winters in Punta Gorda, Fla.

The fifth of six children, Mrs. Wilson’s five brothers - Alfred, Clifford, Allen, Walter, and James Chapman - all predeceased her.

She is survived by her two children, a son-in-law, Walter J. Mazzara, and two granddaughters, Jessica Ann Mazzara, of Trenton, and Andrea Ruth Mazzara, of Boston, Mass.

No services are planned.

John Kacandes
Wall resident John T. “Pop-Pop” Kacandes died on Sunday, Feb. 10 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.

He was 87 years old.

Mr. Kacandes was a plant supervisor for Bendix Corporation, Eatontown, retiring in 1969, and worked for Shore Restaurant Equipment.

He served in the Navy during World War II in the Pacific on P.T. Boats.

He went to high school in Newark and Irvington, and attended the University of Alabama for three years, as well as Farleigh Dickinson University.

Born in Newark, he lived in Neptune before moving to Wall. He was a life resident of the Jersey Shore.

He was predeceased by his father, Thomas Kacandes, and his mother, Helen Kacandes.

He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Constance Kotas Kacandes; his two daughters, Pamela and her husband, Ivan Goldberg, Whiting, Manchester, and Denise Sullivan, Manasquan; four grandchildren, Kimberly and husband, James Rella, Stacey and husband, John Evangelho, Christopher and wife, Dina Cowen, and Travis and wife, Laura Ventimiglia; and five great-grandchildren, Courtney Rella, Nicholas Cowen, Nicole Evangelho, Katelyn Cowen and Brooke Evangelho.

Interment was held at St. Anne’s Cemetery, Wall.

Francioni, Taylor and Lopez Funeral Home, Neptune, was in charge of the arrangements.

Walter J. McNicholas
Brielle resident Walter J. McNicholas passed away Sunday, March 2 in Hackensack after a courageous battle with cancer.

He was raised in North Arlington and lived in Bergen County before moving to Brielle in 2004. Walter was a graduate of Seton Hall Law School, and was with the Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office before going into private practice in Kearny. His favorite hobbies were woodworking and sailing, his greatest joy in life was being a loving father to his son, Connor, and a wonderful husband to his wife Debbie, of 33 years.

Walter was predeceased by his parents, Walter and Elizabeth Eagan McNicholas, and a brother, James.

He is survived by his wife, Debbie Cerrachio McNicholas, and a son, Connor; brothers, Martin, of Ramsey, and Paul, of Brick; and several nieces and nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held today at 9:30 a.m. at St. Denis Church, Manasquan. Entombment will follow at St. Catherine’s Mausoleum and Cemetery, Wall.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations can be made to Kidney Cancer Association, 1988 Momentum Place Chicago, IL 60689-5319, or the Sister’s of St. Joseph Chestnut Hill, Pa.
