Lorraine McCandless
Belmar resident Lorraine B. McCandless died on Saturday, March 1 at the Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.

She was 79 years old.

Mrs. McCandless was a homemaker. Prior to raising her family, she worked at Prudential in Newark as a secretary. She was a member and communicant of The Church of St. Rose, Belmar, for 48 years. She was born in Newark and lived in Belmar since 1960.

She is survived by her loving husband of 54 years, Edward McCandless; two sons, James McCandless and Alan McCandless, and his wife, Karen; a daughter, Kathleen DiOrio and her husband, James; her sister, Margaret Holohan; and five grandchildren, Michael and Megan DiOrio, and Sean, Ryan and Jack McCandless. She also leaves behind many loving nieces and nephews.

Entombment was held at St. Catharine’s Cemetery, Wall.

Donations may be made in her name to St. Rose Church, 607 Seventh Ave., Belmar, 07719.

O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall, was in charge of the arrangements.

Eileen Garvey
Wall resident Eileen I. Garvey died on Wednesday, Feb. 27 at Geraldine L. Thomas Care Center in Wall.

Born in Elizabeth, she lived in Spring Lake Heights for 50 years before moving to Wall.

Mrs. Garvey was employed as a secretary at Bell Labs in Holmdel before retiring. She was a member of the Democratic Club of Spring Lake Heights, where she was also an electioneer. Eileen loved to travel and enjoyed walking the Spring Lake boardwalk and going to Pier Beach, for over 40 years.

She was predeceased by her mother, Irene Burke and her brothers, Edward, Richard and Robert Burke.

She is survived by her beloved husband, William Garvey; her son, Brian Garvey, of Shark River Hills, Neptune; her daughters, Joanne Lackett and her husband, Stephen, of Allenwood, Patricia Boguski and her husband, Bill, of Naples, Fla.; and her grandsons, Chris and Mike Lackett, who were her pride and joy.

Burial was held at St. Catharine’s Cemetery, Wall.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Geraldine Thompson Care Center, Hospital Road, P.O. Box 347, Allenwood, 08720-0347.

O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall, was in charge of the arrangements.

Stanley F. Pisiak
Spring Lake Heights and Palm City, Fla. resident Stanley F. Pisiak died on Wednesday, Feb. 27 at the Stuart, Fla. Martin Memorial Medical Center.

He was 90 years old.

Stanley was born in Kearny on July 28, 1917. As a student in Kearny High School, Stanley starred as a member of the football, baseball, soccer and basketball teams and, at least one of his high school records, still stands at Kearny High School. Prior to enlisting in the Army, Stanley was signed to a professional baseball contract with the New York Giants.

During World War II, Stanley proudly served with General Patton in the Europe theater. During this time, he was a Captain in the Fourth Armored Division and saw extensive action in France, Belgium, Luxembourg, Czechoslovakia and Germany’s Battle of the Bulge. His decorations include five battle stars for major engagements, the Presidential Unit Citation and the Bronze Star medal. His division was ultimately awarded the Presidential Unit Citation.

After the war, Stanley returned to Kearny where he was appointed executive secretary of Kearny’s Veterans Bureau. During this time, he went on to finish college at Seton Hall Law School. After graduating from law school, Stanley was employed by the Federal Bureau of Investigation in 1951, serving for 26 years and retiring as a special agent in 1977.

During his retirement years, Stanley and his family spent their time in Spring Lake Heights and various locations in Florida. He was an avid golfer and has nine hole in ones to his credit. In addition to winning many golf tournaments, his low round of 58 at the Fairway Mews Golf Club stood as the club record for many years and was finally bettered just last year.

Every person that ever knew Stanley always knew he was a man’s man.

Entombment was held at St. Catharine’s Cemetery, Wall.

Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, Manasquan, was in charge of the arrangements.

Joseph Norcia
Sea Girt resident Joseph G. Norcia died on Sunday, March 2 at the Jersey Shore University Medical Center, Neptune.

He was 96 years old.

Mr. Norcia was an attorney for the State of New Jersey Social Security Department in Montclair. After retiring he remained active as an estate attorney up until his passing.

He was very active within the Sea Girt community. Mr. Norcia received his law degree from Rutgers University in Newark. He was a communicant of St. Marks RC Church, in Sea Girt. He was a fitness enthusiast who enjoyed running marathons, and also loved classical and opera music. Born and raised in Newark he moved to Sea Girt in 1979.

He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Marie, in 2001, and by his grandson, Kenneth Stewart, in 1999.

Surviving are his daughters, Cassandra Stewart, of Nutley, and Valerie Lippolis, and her husband, John, of Edison; four grandchildren, Karen Stewart, Joseph Stewart, Jennifer Galati and her husband, Chris, and Justin Lippolis; and two great-grandchildren, Ariana and Nicolas Galati.

Visiting will be held today from 4-8 p.m.. at the O’Brien Funeral Home, Highway 35 at New Bedford Road, Wall.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be offered on Friday at 9 a.m. at St. Mark’s RC Church, in Sea Girt.

Burial will be at Glendale cemetery in Bloomfield.

Emma Morris
Brielle resident Emma Virginia Morris died on Monday, Feb. 18 at Ocean Medical Center, Brick.

Born in Newark, she lived in New Brunswick for many years before coming to Brielle 50 years ago, and had also resided in Spring Lake.

Ms. Morris was employed for 39 years with Bristol-Myers Squibb in Princeton as a medical management representative and had also worked in the public affairs department and several other departments during her career.

In her retirement she enjoyed reading and keeping active walking the Spring Lake boardwalk.

She was predeceased by her parents, F. Raymond and Bridget Moore Morris, her brothers, William and Raymond Morris, and her sister, Anna Morris.

She is survived by her sister, Veronica Schuster and her husband, Robert, of Brielle.

Visiting will be held today from 2-5 p.m. at the O’Brien Funeral Home, Highway 35 at New Bedford Road, Wall.

Mass will be held on Friday at 9:30 a.m. at St. Denis Church, Manasquan, followed by burial at Greenwood Cemetery, Brielle.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the St. Denis Church Building Fund, 90 Union Ave., Manasquan, 08736.

Dorothy Pflum Thayer
Wall resident Dorothy Pflum Thayer died on Thursday, Feb. 14 at Sunrise Assisted Living in Wall.

She was 86 years old.

Born in the Bronx, N.Y., she lived in Manchester, N.H., Freehold, Chicago, Ill., and Spring Lake before recently coming to Wall.

She was a communicant of St. Catharine’s Church in Spring Lake and had served as a church lector, CCD religious education teacher and a hospital volunteer.

She was predeceased by her husband, Walter S. Thayer, and her sister, Irene Carroll.

She is survived by her sons, W. Stephen Thayer III, of Alexandria, Va., Peter A. Thayer and his wife, Patricia, of Marietta, Ga., Robert W. Thayer, of San Jose, Calif., and Richard M. Thayer and his wife, Wendy, of Centennial, Colo., seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She also leaves her brothers, Frank Pflum MD, of Shark River Hills, William Pflum MD, of Florida, and her sister, Virginia MacDonald, of Spring Lake.

A private committal service was held at St. Catharine’s Cemetery, Wall.

O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall, was in charge of the arrangements.

Proctor Knott Ely
Chapel Hill, N.C. resident Proctor Knott Ely, formerly of Manasquan, died on Feb. 16 at Hillcrest Convalescent Center.

Mr. Ely was born in Millstone Township, on Aug. 20, 1922. Mr. Ely was a World War II veteran who served in North Africa and Italy with the Army Signal Corps.

He was a decorated sergeant including being awarded with the Purple Heart.

Mr. Ely worked for New Jersey Bell Company for 32 years.

He was a member of the Hightstown Masonic Lodge for over 50 years. He was a member of the Manasquan Elks and was chosen Elk of the Year 1990. Besides the Manasquan Elks, he was a member of the American Legion Post, Point Pleasant Beach, Point Pleasant VFW and Disabled American Veterans. One of his pride projects was the establishment of the Elks Rose Garden in Squan Plaza.

Surviving are his wife of 64 years, the former Joan Davison; a son, William Douglas Ely, Palm Bay, Fla.; a daughter, Linda Ely Mansmann, Chapel Hill, N.C.; five granddaughters; one grandson; one great-grandson; and two great-granddaughters.

Visiting will be held at Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, 39 South St., Manasquan, on Friday, Feb. 22 from 6 to 9 p.m., with a funeral service at the funeral home at 8:30 p.m.

A graveside military service will be held at East Windsor Cemetery, 790 Perrineville Road, Hightstown, on Saturday, Feb. 23 at 11 a.m.

Earl Scheuerman
Wall resident Earl “Chris” Scheuerman, formerly of Keansburg, died on Feb. 7 at Jersey Shore Medical Center, Neptune.

He was 76 years old.

Mr. Scheuerman was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Irene [nee Durkin] Scheuerman, and his siblings, Loretta, Vera, Gladys and Robert.

He is survived by his brother, Frank, and nieces, nephews, grandnieces, grandnephews and friends.

Arrangements are under the direction of McDonough Funeral Home, Manasquan.
