John J. Marino
Winchester, Mass. resident John J Marino, whose brother resides in Lavallette, died Thursday, June 14 in his home.

He was 68 years old.

As an entrepreneur and a father, John J. Marino approached every experience with enthusiasm and passion, whether describing a new business idea or reveling in his elder children’s accomplishments in business and his younger children’s prowess on the ski slopes, soccer fields or basketball courts.

Mr. Marino was a former state official who served as the Commissioner of Commerce and Development in the first Dukakis administration.

Mr. Marino founded and managed more than a dozen successful companies during the past 40 years, including three firms involved in various aspects of foreign exchange, equities and fixed-income trading. He was chairman and chief executive officer of Softek Partners, Inc., a company he co-founded with Alen Shapiro of Brooklyn, a consulting and system integration company, chairman of Tradeware Global, a provider of electronic trading solutions, chairman and president of Integrated Systems and Services, Inc., a provider of electrical services and chairman of Xenith, Inc., a company focused on new technology in sports helmets.

Mr. Marino was also assisting several young entrepreneurs with new business launches.

Among his career highlights, Mr. Marino invented, developed and patented Moist Mates, America’s first moist bath tissue on a roll, a business which he sold to Proctor & Gamble Company in 2001. From 1975 to 1978, Mr. Marino served as Commissioner of Commerce and Development for the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, serving as chairman of both the Massachusetts Industrial Finance Authority and the Governor’s Task Force on Capital Formation.

He also taught entrepreneurship classes at Boston College, Harvard Extension School and the University of Vermont.

Mr. Marino was an avid athlete, and a lifelong tennis player. He was one of the founding investors of the Longfellow Racquet Club in Sudbury, one of the first indoor tennis facilities in Massachusetts. In the 1970s, he was the chairman of tennis at Brae Burn Country Club, and hired its first tennis pro. Mr. Marino also started a children’s day camp there for aspiring tennis players.

Mr. Marino was born in West New York, N.J. He received a master’s degree in public administration from the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. He attended the University of Vermont on a football scholarship, and earned his bachelor of science degree in electrical engineering there. He was a proud member of the Phi Delta Theta fraternity.

Mr. Marino began his entrepreneurial career while a student at UVM with a lucrative late-night, dorm-delivered submarine sandwich business.

Mr. Marino began his career in 1960 as an engineering instructor for General Electric in Pittsfield, where he was taught the U.S. Navy on the Polaris Missile System. He then worked as a research engineer at MIT. In the mid-1960s he founded Memory Technology of Sudbury, taking the company from start-up to more than 300 employees.

Mr. Marino was married to Sharon F. Merrill, chairman and CEO of the Boston investor relations consulting firm Sharon Merrill Associates, Inc.

In addition to his wife, he leaves three daughters, Kerry Smithers, [44], Stacey, [42] and Julia, [15]; one son, Mark, [14]; and three brothers, Philip of Paramus, Vincent of Lavallette, Anthony of Gainesville, Ga., and Francis, of Port St. Lucie, Fla.

Funeral services were handled by the Costello Funeral Home, Winchester, Mass. Interment took place at Wildwood Cemetery, Winchester, Mass.

Florence Loizeaux Ritchie
Bay Head resident Florence Loizeaux Ritchie died Tuesday, June 19 in the home of her daughter in Raritan Township.

She was 82 years old.

Born in Plainfield, on May 26, 1925, she was the daughter of the late Frederick D. and Ruth Baldwin Loizeaux. She had formerly resided in Plainfield, and in Bay Head. She was a homemaker.

She was an active volunteer in the Plainfield area, moving to Bay Head on a part-time basis in 1950, and full-time in 1978. She was an avid tennis player and golfer.

She was pre-deceased by her husband, David E. Ritchie, in 1995, and by a daughter, Patricia Walker, and brother, David Loizeaux.

Surviving are a son, Peter Ritchie of Vero Beach, Fla.; a daughter, Kim Bahnsen of Raritan Township; a sister, Bernice Swain of Plainfield; and nine grandchildren.

Funeral services and interment will be private under the direction of the Holcombe-Fisher Funeral Home, Flemington.

Helena Bajor French
Point Pleasant Beach resident Helena Bajor French died Tuesday, June 12, in Meridian Nursing Home, Brick.

She was 95 years old.

She was a homemaker. She was a member of the Bayberry Garden Club, Brielle. She was a communicant of Sacred Heart Church, Bay Head, and a member of its Altar Rosary Society.

Born in Newark, she lived in Roselle before moving to Point Pleasant Beach 28 years ago.

Her husband, William French, died in 1995.

Surviving are two sons, William French of Berkeley Heights, and John French of Point Pleasant Beach; a daughter, Valerie Morales of Barnegat; four grandchildren, Ellen, Mary, Suzanne and Juliana; and six great-grandchildren, Caroline, Nicholas, Mathew, Juliana, Thaddeus and James.

The Van Hise & Callagan Funeral Home, Point Pleasant Beach, handled the arrangements. Cremation will be private.

Barbara Ann Wallace
Richmond Va. resident Barbara Ann Wallace, formerly of Bay Head, died Tuesday, June 12 in her home.

She was 56 years old.

Born in Point Pleasant, she graduated from Bay Head Grammar School and Point Pleasant Beach High School. She attended Mary Washington College of Virginia.

For the past 20 years she worked for Patient First of Richmond, prior to that, she worked for the Richmond Public Health System.

She dedicated her life to her children and was an avid animal lover and supporter of rescued animals, she leaves behind her beloved dogs Katie and Hanna.

She was predeceased by her parents; Kenneth B. and Jean S. Glass of Bay Head.

Surviving are her daughter Susan, of Richmond and a son John, of Richmond; a sister Carolyn Rock and her husband, Joe, of Houston, Texas; a brother, Kenneth and his wife, Mary, of Bay Head; a brother, Richard and his wife Debi, of Fort Lauderdale, Fla.; a brother, Russell, and his wife, Phyliss, of Berkley; an uncle and aunt, Wally and Lorraine Glass, of St Michaels, MD.; and her ex-husband, John, of Richmond; many cousins, nephews and nieces and loving friends.

Services were private.

Jason K. Cipolla
Point Pleasant resident Jason K. Cipolla died Thursday, June 14 in his home.

He was 24 years old.

Born in Point Pleasant, he lived there all his life. He graduated from Point Pleasant Beach High School in 2002, where he was a high school football standout, playing in the XXV All-Star Football Classic. His football career started with the Golden Elks Pop Warner football squads, where he excelled at every position he played, and was considered one of the top players in their history. He continued his career with the Point Pleasant Borough football high school team, where he was a leading ground gainer and a feared hitter on defense. His senior year was played for the Garnet Gulls in Point Pleasant Beach, where he received First Team All State Group One notoriety for his tenacious defensive abilities.

He was an apprentice operating engineer for two years with Operating Engineer Local Union No. 825 in Springfield, where he often worked with his dad.

Jay loved to fish with his brother Tucker. They had once worked on the fishing boat, The Dauntless, out of Point Pleasant Beach. He loved animals and little children.

Surviving are his mother and father, Thomas Cipolla of Point Pleasant; his mother, Deborah Smith of Point Pleasant; his brother, Tucker Cipolla of Jackson; and his grandfather, Joseph Smith of Florida.

The Colonial Funeral Home, Brick, handled the arrangements. Cremation will be private.

Arthur E. Brown
Point Pleasant resident Arthur E. Brown died Saturday, June 16 in Ocean Medical Center, Brick.

He was 86 years old.

Born and raised in Mahanoy City, Pa., he moved to Point Pleasant in 1958.

A World War II, United States Army Air Corps veteran, he was honorably discharged after achieving the rank of staff sergeant.

For 25 years, he was employed by Stein Pontiac-Cadillac, Asbury Park, retiring in 1984 as the parts department manager.

He was predeceased by his wife, Irene Sabol Brown; and his son-in-law, Russell Lindner.

He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Arthur E. Jr. and Jackie Brown of Wyoming, Mich.; his daughter, Joanne Lindner of Point Pleasant; three grandchildren, Eddie Brown and his wife Sara, Bill Brown and Margie Brown; and by special friends, Bet, Linda and Chelene.

The Pable-Evertz Funeral Home of Point Pleasant handled the arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, contributions made to the Deborah Hospital Foundation, P.O. Box 820, Browns Mills, NJ 08015, would be appreciated.

Michael John Ocone
Brick resident Michael John Ocone, who was born in Point Pleasant, died Tuesday, June 12 in his home.

He was 31 years old.

Michael, a senior manager, worked for PricewaterhouseCoopers, New York, for 11 years.

He was an avid fisherman and boater.

Michael enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He was a graduate of Oak Hill Academy, Christian Brothers Academy and Villanova University. Michael was a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants. He was born in Point Pleasant and raised in Wall before moving to Brick in 2000.

Michael is survived by his high school sweetheart and wife of six years, Nicole Spagnolia Ocone; his two children, Emily Rose and Nicholas Michael, all of Brick; his parents, Louis M. and Mary Louise Krah Ocone of Brick; his mother-in-law, Patricia Spagnolia of Jackson; and father-in-law, Ronald Spagnolia of Toms River.

He is also survived by a brother and sister-in-law, Anthony G. and Jill Ocone of Point Pleasant; a sister Maria L. Ocone of Point Pleasant; and two godchildren, Alex Jenkoski and Declan O’Grady. Michael will be missed by his large extended family and many great friends.

Orender Family Home For Funerals, Manasquan, handled the arrangements. Interment took place at St. Anne’s Cemetery, Wall.
