Elaine Margaret Sharkey
Elaine Margaret Sharkey, of Spring Lake Heights and Wall, passed away peacefully on Jan. 5. She was 85.

Born in Brooklyn, N.Y. she is a former resident of Spring Lake Heights, and resided in Brick for thirty years before spending the past three years living with her niece in Wall.

Mrs. Sharkey was a graduate of St. John’s University, in Brooklyn, where she received her Bachelor’s Degree in Business graduating with the college class of 1957. She achieved her Masters’ Degree in Education in 1961 from Hunter College in New York City. Elaine was a teacher for 50 years, beginning her career at St. Joseph’s High School, Brooklyn, before moving to New Jersey to teach at H.W. Mountz Elementary School in Spring Lake.

She taught CCD at St. Catharines R.C. Church alongside her husband. She was a member of the Third Order of Franciscans from St. Peter’s and was very involved with the Pro-Life work at St. Catharines R.C. Church. Mrs. Sharkey was a parishioner of The Church of the Epiphany, where she served the sick and homebound as a Eucharistic Minister, visited nursing homes to pray the rosary, and was a faithful adorer of the Most Blessed Sacrament.

Elaine was a devoted wife, sister, aunt, and friend to so many. She was deeply rooted in the faith, as a spiritual leader to many, and was dedicated to the Church and to her loving family. Her main goals in life were to draw others to Jesus through Mary by loving others unconditionally and leading souls to heaven.

She is preceded in death by her parents, James and Anne Farrell Callaghan, her beloved husband of 41 years, Patrick J. Sharkey in 2008, and her dear sister Therese den Hartog in 2009.

Surviving are her loving niece and nephews, Kim Aufiero and husband Raymond, Brian den Hartog and wife Mandy, and James den Hartog and wife Suzanne, cherished “LaLa” to Dean [his wife Gia and daughter Abby], Tony, James, Nikki, Philip, Eric, Rachel, Joseph, and Jude.

Arrangements were under the direction of the O’Brien Funeral Home in Wall. A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated at Church of the Epiphany in Brick. Entombment took place at St. Catharine’s Mausoleum, in Wall.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made in Elaine’s memory to Arch Bishop Fulton J. Sheen Foundation, P.O. Box 728, Peoria, IL 61652-0728

Doris Gaylord
Doris Bullock Gaylord, formerly of Manasquan, died Sunday, Dec. 11, 2011 in Normal, Ill. She was 92.

Mrs. Gaylord was born May 29, 1920 in Ottawa, Canada, a daughter of William and Margaret Young Bullock. She married George M. Gaylord on Dec. 9, 1944 at North Arlington. He died April 22, 1998.

Mrs. Gaylord formerly worked for the Parker Ins. Agency in Manasquan for 30 years prior to retirement.

She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church, Normal, Ill. where she was an ordained elder.

Her parents and a brother, John Bullock, preceded her in death.

Surviving are two sons, Bruce M. [Gail Kelly] Gaylord, Westport, Conn., and Rev. Larry [Leslie Pemble] Gaylord, Normal, Ill.; four grandchildren, Jesse [Julia] Gaylord, Cameron Gaylord, Jacob Gaylord and Larissa [Tatiana Schwartz] Hong; and a great granddaughter, Dahlia Marie Gaylord.

Arrangements were under the direction of Calvert & Metzler Funeral Homes in Normal, Ill. Her memorial service was held at the First Presbyterian Church in Normal, Ill. with her son, Rev. Larry Gaylord officiating. Internment will take place Friday, March 16 at Arlington National cemetery in Arlington, Va..

Memorials may be made to First Presbyterian Church, 2000 E. College Ave., Normal, Ill.

Philip Louis Stoll Jr
Philip Louis Stoll Jr., with family in Spring Lake Heights, passed away Wednesday, Jan. 11 at Ocean Medical Center in Brick with his family by his side. He was 66.

Philip was born on June 27, 1945.

He served in the US Army during the Vietnam War as a missile technician.

He was the owner and operator of Stoll’s Auto Body, a Freehold family business, worked with Circus High Performance Race Cars as a specialty paint and body artist. Philip also worked for Woods Auto Body until his retirement.

Philip enjoyed fishing, boating, art sketching and playing the guitar. He had a love for animals and nature.

Philip was predeceased by his parents Philip and Mary Stoll.

He is survived by his sister and her husband Patricia and Anthony Tumminia, of Spring Lake Heights; a niece Leanne Tumminia; and many friends.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Orender Family Home for Funerals in Manasquan. Burial was private.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to Popcorn Zoo Park, 124 Evergreen Avenue, Newark.

George T. Marvel
George T. Marvel, of Wall, died on Jan. 15. He was 84.

Born in New York City, he was a graduate of the Samual Gompers High School, Bronx, N.Y. Mr. Marvel proudly served with the U.S. Army Air Corp Division 89th Bomb Squadron 38th Bomber Group in occupied Japan from 1946 to 1947 during which time he received the Army of Occupation Medal - Japan, and the World War II Victory Medal.

A resident of Holmdel since 1955, before moving to Wall Township six years ago Mr. Marvel was employed by Millers Abattoir of North Bergen for twenty five years and the Bendix Corporation of Eatontown for fifteen years before retiring in 1993.

Devoted to his family he was a huge New York Giants Fan and an avid history buff.

Predeceased by his parents Oscar L. Marvel, Myrtle P. Tubbs Marvel, his step-mother Katherine Marvel, and his beloved wife of fifty two years Marilyn Marvel in 2002, Mr. Marvel is survived by his loving children Melissa Beaver and son-in-law Robert, of Wall, Richard Marvel and daughter -in-law Joyce Meeker, of Royersford, Penn., George Marvel, of Albany, N.Y.; and his sister Edith Marvel, of New York City. Mr. Marvel is also survived by his cherished grandchildren, Emily Beaver, Kristine, Steven, Lisa and Nichole Marvel, and Anthony De Zao, and his special great grandchildren Alexander and Cole Roy.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Johnson Funeral Home & Cremation Service in Wall. Visitation will be held on Thursday, Jan. 19 from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Funeral Services will also be offered on Thursday evening at 8:15 pm at the funeral home with Father Stephen Wisner officiating.

Dr. Frank Schell
Dr. Frank R. Schell, with family in Sea Girt, passed away Monday, Jan. 9 at his home with his devoted family at his side. He was 91.

He was born Dec. 26, 1920 in New York City. Frank was proud of his Hungarian heritage and his poor Ellis Island immigrant parents, Francis and Sidonia Schell.

He was educated in the public school system there and graduated from the University of Rochester in 1943. He graduated from the Long Island School of Medicine and did his rotating internship at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York.

Dr. Schell was a practicing radiologist for over 50 years at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center in Paterson, where he served as chairman of the department of radiology, president of the medical staff and chairman of the medical board.

He was a Fellow in the American College of Radiology. He served as a long time consultant with the N.J. Department of Health and Division of Environmental Protection.

He enjoyed teaching and served as a professor of radiology at Seton Hall University and the New Jersey College of Medicine. Dr. Schell was especially dedicated for decades to his students at the School of Radiologic Technology, Passaic County College.

He served continuously on numerous other committees for state and county medical societies.

He served two elected terms on the Borough of Kinnelon Council as chairman of finance, utilities, and buildings and grounds.

Dr. Schell was a parishioner of Our Lady of the Magnificat R.C. Church in Kinnelon and St. Anthony’s R.C. Church in Butler where he and Jeanne were honored and received as affiliates into the Third Order of the Friars Minor.

He will be remembered for his wonderful sense of humor, his sense of justice, honesty, love, kindness, compassion and generosity, much of which is known to God alone. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 50 years, Jeanne Schell, his two daughters Mary Martha, and Frances Ilona, and his beloved sister Elizabeth Abell.

Frank is survived by four sons and four daughters: Dr. Frank C. Schell and his wife Susan, of Cornish Flat, N.H.; John K. Schell and his wife Cindy, of Newton; Margaret Schell Bossett and her husband Henry, of Sea Girt.; Catherine Schell Caddigan and her husband Robert, of Randolph, Mass.; Barbara Schell Irven and her husband James of Sparta; James C. Schell and his wife Gail, of Honesdale, Pa.; Maria Schell Daugherty, of Meriden, N.H.; Dr. Thomas G. Schell and his wife Stephanie, of Meriden, N.H.; 24 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.

Arrangements were under the direction of the Morrison Funeral Home in Butler.

The funeral Mass was held at Saint Anthony of Padua Parish in Butler, and burial took place at Mt. Calvary cemetery in Butler.

In lieu of flowers Dr. Schell requested that donations be made to: Sisters of Charity of Saint Elizabeth, P.O. Box 476, Convent Station, St. Anthony Friary, 63 Bartholdi Avenue, Butler, or RLS Foundation, 1610 14th St. NW, Suite 300, Rochester, N.Y. 55901 in his memory.

Catherine Donnelly
Catherine Glennon Donnelly, of Spring Lake Heights, passed away on Monday, Jan. 16 at her home. She was 98.

Mrs. Donnelly was a homemaker and a grandmother. She was a member of St. Catharine’s RC Church in Spring Lake and had been a Communicant of St. Genevieve’s Parish, Elizabeth.

Born and raised in Elizabeth, Catherine had been a resident of Fairway Mews in Spring Lake Heights for the past 11 years.

Mrs. Donnelly was predeceased by her husband Francis A. Donnelly in 1966, her three children Frank and David Donnelly and Catherine Donnelly-Ferruggia, her brothers and sisters William, John, and Ruth Glennon, Margaret Stratton and Mary Reilly. Surviving are her devoted children Peter and Mary Jo Donnelly, of Spring Lake, Robert and Maureen Donnelly, of Middletown, Patricia and John Hyland, of Merrick, N.Y., her son in law Gary Feruggia, of Watchung, and daughter in law Maureen Donnelly, of Brick; her 16 grandchildren and 21 great grandchildren.

Relatives and friends are invited to call Thursday from 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. at the O’Brien Funeral Home in Wall. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday, Jan. 20 at 9:30 a.m. at St. Catharine’s RC Church in Spring Lake. Interment will take place at St. Gertrude’s cemetery in the Colonia section of Woodbridge.

Flowers graciously accepted or a donation in lieu of flowers may be made to the American Cancer Society, 801 Broad St., Shrewsbury [Envelopes at the Funeral Home].

Jean Van Wagoner Allin
Jean Van Wagoner Allin, formerly of Brielle, died on Friday, Jan. 13. She was 86.

She was born in Newark on March 13, 1925, the daughter of the late Wilbur Van Wagoner and Mary Frances Rech.

Jean graduated from Glen Ridge High School and worked at Westinghouse in Bloomfield for 15 years.

She lived in Denville for 25 years before moving to Brielle in 1985. She then relocated to Erie, Pa. in 2010 to be closer to her family.

Her most important job was that of a domestic engineer for all her married years, with love, hugs and happy memories for her family.

Jean is survived by her husband, Richard, of Erie, Pa.; a daughter Kathy Allin, of Cambridge Springs, Pa., and a son John Allin and his wife Peggy of Erie, Pa.

She is further survived by two grandchildren and one great- grandchild.

Arrangements were under the direction of Burton Westlake Funeral Home in Erie, Pa. Gone but not forgotten.

Memorials may be made to Popcorn Park Zoo, PO Box 43, Forked River or The Brielle First Aid Squad, 710 Old Bridge Road, Brielle.
