Robert Andrew Baillie
Robert Andrew Baillie, 82, of the Leisure Village West section of Manchester Township, formerly of Wall, died Friday, Dec. 10 at Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune.

He was born in Hamilton in Ontario, Canada to parents of American heritage, Mr. Baillie came to the United States in 1944, joining the United States Navy during WWII.

Bob was a longtime resident of Jackson Township before moving to Wall Township, where he resided for 10 years. He moved to Manchester in 1994.

He was the owner of Baillie Store Design Company and was an innovator in design concepts for retail stores in the Northeast. After he retired from the display business, he and his wife developed and sold the Purr-fect Privy system for cats. He also held several other patents.

He was one of the founders of the Holbrook Little League in Jackson. He was an avid bowler, skier, and motorcycle enthusiast. He and his wife enjoyed extensive travel, particularly Florida and Vermont. He was a member of the LVW Bocce Club.

He was predeceased by his sister, Rosemarie Baillie.

He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Suzanne Mulshine Baillie, three sons, Robert A. Baillie, Jr. [Julie] Lake Como, Scott Baillie [Stacy], Jackson and Bruce Baillie, Manalapan, three step-children, Steven Flint, Wall, Robert Flint, Wall, and Linda Fisher [Kurt], Wall, four grandchildren, Kristal, Douglas, Nicole and Rachal, and three step-grandchildren, Collin Fabio, Annika Fisher and Ian Fisher.

A gathering will be held at the O’Brien Funeral Home, 505 Burnt Tavern Road, Brick, on Wednesday, Dec. 29 from 11-1 p.m. followed by a memorial service at 1 p.m.

Elbert Lawrence Schoonover
Elbert Lawrence Schoonover, Jr., “Bert”, 79, of Wall, passed away on Friday, Dec. 17 at home with his family by his side.

He was the son of Elbert Lawrence and Jessie [Bolton] Schoonover.

Born in Newark, he lived in Nutley and Sea Girt before moving to Wall 15 years ago. He graduated from Manasquan High School in 1949 and attained a Bachelor of Pharmacy at Temple University in 1954.

He served in the U.S. Army as a specialist 2 [corporal] in pharmacy and particularly enjoyed his assignment in Japan.

He co-owned and operated the former Shore Pharmacy in Brick before joining the pharmacy department of Monmouth Medical Center in Long Branch, where he became assistant director of pharmacy until his retirement.

In addition to his memberships in several professional organizations, he served as a volunteer with the Sea Girt Fire Department. He also served on the board for Allaire Estates in several capacities, including being the first president, and was also a member of his high school reunion committee for many years.

He was an avid fan of almost all sports, but especially loved watching, cheering on, discussing and quoting stats on the Yankees and Giants. A natural athlete, he played competitive team sports from childhood on, including basketball at Temple, softball and bowling. He loved swimming.

He enjoyed playing backgammon and card and board games. He was a constant reader, a brilliant solver of crossword puzzles and a quiet guy, but nonetheless possessed of a wonderfully wry, dry sense of humor. He loved good jokes and good interesting conversations. Most of all this courageous man loved and was devoted to his family and friends, who will miss him always.

Bert is survived by his companion of 26 years, Mary Lou Diecker, of Wall; his children Laura Romanelli and her husband, Jim, of Wall, Dean Schoonover, Anne Schoonover, both of Sea Girt, Karen Cunningham and her husband, Mark, of Middletown, and Jon Peter Schoonover and his wife, Leslee, of Macungie, Pa., and their mother, Jean A. Schoonover. He is survived by nine grandchildren, Lindsay, A.J., Tyler, Ingrid, Lars, Ashley, Nathan, Alana and Breanne; a cousin, E. Lawrence Brown and his wife, Mary, as well as many other cousins. Bert is also survived by Mary Lou’s family Suzanne Koegler, Andrew Koegler, John and Carolyn Blahota, Michelle, Rob, Courtney and Lindsay Mirabello, Michael, Eva, Cassandra and Alyssa Blahota.

The Orender Family Home for Funerals, Manasquan, was in charge of arrangements. Interment was in St. Catharine’s Cemetery, Sea Girt.

To support a cause that was important to Bert, in lieu of flowers the family has asked for blood or memorial donations to Central Jersey Blood Center, 494 Sycamore Ave., Shrewsbury, 07702.

Alfred Joseph Friedrich
Alfred Joseph Friedrich, 90, of Spring Lake Heights, passed away Sunday, Dec. 19 at the MediCenter, Neptune City.

Born and raised in Newark, he lived in Spring Lake Heights for the past 68 years.

He was a communicant of St. Catharine-St. Margaret Parish, Spring Lake and was an accordion player in the Happy Days String Band who recently honored him for his 15 years of membership.

He was also a longtime member of the Jersey Coast Radio Control Club.

Alfred had been employed as a diesel truck mechanic, first with International Harvester and then with Bilkay Trucking in Neptune, for 40 years and was also a member of the Teamsters Local No. 701, New Brunswick.

He was a proud U.S. Army veteran of WWII, serving as a Tech Sergeant in the 339th Infantry, 802nd Division in North Africa and Italy.

Alfred was predeceased by his beloved wife of 65 years, Anne E. Litowinsky Friedrich, in September 2009.

They had celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary, in 2008, with Dorothy Boyle Middleton as their maid of honor.

He was also predeceased by his siblings, Evelyn Metzger, and Adam and William Friedrich, and his nephew, Dennis Friedrich.

Surviving is his devoted daughter and her husband, 1968 Olympian Barbara Friedrich Parcinski and Clifford, of Spring Lake Heights, his nephews and nieces Eugene, Ronald and Jack Metzger, Kenneth, Paula, Cindy, William and Deanna Friedrich and Terese’ Christie, Thomas John and James Litowinsky and his great-niece Jacqueline Litowinsky, many other special great nieces and nephews as well as cousin Taras Hrycyshyn.

The O’Brien Funeral Home, Wall, was in charge of arrangements.

There will be a Mass of Christian Burial today, Thursday, Dec. 23 at 11 a.m. at St. Catharine’s Church, Spring Lake.

Burial was held in the parish cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to the Alfred J. Friedrich Memorial Fund, c/o O’Brien Funeral Home, 2028 Highway 35, Wall.

Dorothy H. West
Dorothy H. West of Brick Township, formerly of Belmar passed away on Dec. 21. She was 74 years old.

Dorothy was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister who cherished her family above all.

Born in Jersey City, she lived in Belmar before moving to Brick Township many years ago. She is predeceased by her husbands, the late Alvin Shinn and Maurice West, and her sister Maureen Parlatti.

She is survived by her sons David Shinn of Lake Como and Alan Shinn of Brick Township, her daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen M. and Robert Gawronski of Brick, two sisters Elaine Cronin and Claire Bagnall, 5 grandchildren, Stephanie Mohr, Katelyn West, Eternity Gawronski, Matthew Shinn, Alanah Shinn, and 2 great grandchildren, Brianna and Ryan Mohr.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Funeral Mass on Wednesday Dec. 29 at 10 a.m. at Saint Rose RC Church in Belmar. Visitation will be on Tuesday from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. at the Reilly Funeral Home, 801 D Street Belmar.Cremation will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations to St. Jude’s Children’s Research Hospital would be appreciated.

Barbara E. Eimess
Barbara E. Eimess, 76, of Brick, passed away Friday, Dec. 10 at home, surrounded by family.

She was born and raised in the Vailsburg section of Newark, and raised her family in South Plainfield. She spent her professional career as an administrative assistant to the director of benefits at Wyeth Laboratories before retiring to Greenbriar in Brick.

Barbara was very active in numerous civic organizations including Kiwanis, The Red Hat Society, The Woman’s Club of Point Pleasant and the Greenbriar Community Association. She was a parishioner at Sacred Heart in Newark, Sacred Heart in South Plainfield and then at Saint Martha’s in Point Pleasant. She volunteered at Claremont Nursing Home caring for the elderly.

Barbara laughed often and was a great friend and listener. She enjoyed going to Broadway shows and traveling. Barbara loved spending time with her best friend and sister Peggy, revered her older brother Ray and adored her younger brother Dick. She loved her daughter Tracey, who was, along with her grandchildren Jack, Casey and Connor, her greatest joys.

Barbara is predeceased by her brother Ray and sister-in-law Sharon Casey. She is survived by her daughter Tracey Jackson and son-in-law John, her three grandchildren Jack, Casey, and Connor, all of Point Pleasant Beach, a sister, Peggy and brother-in-law Lou Galipean, a brother Richard and sister- in-law Patricia Casey.

A funeral Mass will be held at St. Martha’s, Point Pleasant, at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 18.

John A. Muller Jr.
John A. Muller Jr., 83 of Manasquan, formerly of Bay Head, died Monday, Dec. 13 at Ocean Medical Center in Brick.

He was born in Linden to John Arnold, Sr. and Ethel [nee Lohr]. John’s early years were spent in many different communities including, Irvington, Millburn, Maplewood and finally Bay Head. As a youth John had many different jobs including work with the A&P and as an impressive lifeguard standing 6’4” tall.

After graduation from High School, John joined the Army and was assigned to the Quartermaster Corp and was stationed in northern Italy where he rose to the rank of Staff Sergeant. Returning from the duty, John attended Lafayette College and was a member of Alpha Omega Fraternity. In 1951, John married Dorothy Smith of Jersey City and lived in a small cape in Spring Lake Heights. In 1959 they finished their current home in Manasquan. For several years John worked with his father in New York City in a part of advertising involved with printing sales, however, John always liked to work with his hands and opened his own Custom Cabinetry Shop and later also did some general construction. He and Dot retired about 1987 and spent time in Savannah, Georgia, an area John loved and where they owned a residence and other property.

They had no children- but two dogs, Sockie and Rufus, whom they greatly loved. Dot died last year.

John is survived by his brother Paul R. Muller of Savannah, Ga. and his brothers-in-law William Smith, Lakewood, and Leonard Smith, Park Ridge.

Visitation will be today, Friday, Dec. 17, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Neary-Quinn Funeral Home, 39 South St., Manasquan. Funeral services will be held today at 3:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Cremation will be private.

Susan Smith Hawkings
Susan Smith Hawkings, 77, of Mantoloking, died Dec. 13.

A native of Long Island, she lived in New York from 1956 to 1990 and Mantoloking thereafter.

She is survived by her husband of 53 years, D. Mark Hawkings; her brother, Herbert L. Smith III; her children, David Hawkings and Parish Ryan; their spouses, Betsy and Dudley; and grandchildren Harry, Charlie and Rin.

A memorial service will be held Saturday, Dec. 18 at 11 a.m. at All Saints Church, Bay Head.

In lieu of flowers, donations to Popcorn Park Zoo, Forked River, would be appreciated.

J. Austin Thomas Sandfort
J. Austin Thomas Sandfort, 24, of Point Pleasant, passed away suddenly on Tuesday, Dec. 14.

Born, March 27, 1986 in Long Branch, Austin was a lifelong resident of Point Pleasant and 2004 graduate of Point Pleasant Borough High School.

Recently employed by Smitty’s Auto Repair, Toms River, Austin worked in the summers as a landscaper for Moniz & Brylewski Landscaping.

He loved skateboarding, biking, body boarding and hanging out with his friends.

Surviving are his beloved parents, Thomas D. and Dawnn [Converso] Sandfort, of Point Pleasant; his maternal grandmother, Vivienne Converso, of Charlotte, N.C.; his brother, Thomas Joseph Sandfort, of Point Pleasant; two sisters, Jessica Ryan Sandfort McMullen and her husband Colin, of Piscataway, and Jacquelyn Rae Sandfort, of Point Pleasant; and many dear friends.

Friends are invited to pay their respects to the family from 12 noon to 2 p.m. tomorrow, Saturday, Dec. 18, at the Pable-Evertz Funeral Home of Point Pleasant, 901 Beaver Dam Road, where at 2 p.m. a memorial service will be held.
